Let me start by saying that I hate crossbody bags. They remind me of my middle school years in Ohio, when I would get all dressed up to go out, and then throw my fluorescent ski jacket on top of my dress, and then throw my black crossbody bag on top of that. (As I'd head out the door, I might pause to add more hairspray to my teased bangs. Ah, memories.) But — that said — I know that the crossbody bag is hot again, and hey, for some people this uber-functional look has never gone out of style. So if you happen to be looking for a crossbody bag, this is a pretty darned cute one from Cole Haan. I particularly love the peacock blue (pictured) but it also comes in black, dark mocha, a light purple “dusk,”, “palomino snake” (white), and “stone snake.” Zappos has the bag on sale today — it was $228, but is now marked to $182.40. I sadly can’t wear cross body bags because my boobs already hurt my back enough as it is, so when I do my back is screaming at the end of the day.
Threadjack for advice:
I’m having a hard time picking a gift for a friend. She told me about my dream job opening, let me use her name in my cover letter, and took the resume and cover letter to her boss to put on her desk which I have no doubt resulted in me getting the dream job. I am late in giving the thank-you, I should have done it right after the help rather than after I got the job, but I procrastinated. What should I get for her? Some details (hopefully not to detailed) about her: she is an attorney, she owns her own home, has an awesome dog, is a beer and wine connoisseur, and a fiction writer. She’s also a wonderful person who I am truly grateful to. Any ideas?

I find them to be painful as well- usually right in that neck/upper back area where the strap rests. When I wear a regular shoulder bag I don’t have that problem at all.
I think taking your friend out to lunch/dinner (perhaps dinner at a place that offers wine or beer tastings) would be a fine gift. My expectation on this sort of thing is that if I do something for a friend now, they’ll do me a similar favor in the future. We shouldn’t have to give a friend a gift every time she helps us out.
Elle21
I agree – treating her the next time you go out would be completely appropriate. Dinner and a concert/theater/other event etc…

I had a friend do something similar for me, and I got her the Sephora Women’s Perfume Sampler. It comes in a set of 10 or so popular perfumes, small size, and a coupon that can be exchanged for any 1 of those 10 full-size perfumes. I think this is a nice gift because it allows the recipient to choose the perfume she likes. If she doesn’t like perfumes, she can exchange for anything from Sephora.
Ruby
I wouldn’t expect a thank-you for something like this. But if you want to show gratitude, invite her out for dinner to celebrate your first paycheck?

I want to take this opportunity to thank the computer gods for ctrl + Z. I just accidentally “selected all” (ctrl + A) on a 22 page document that I’ve been working on for 2 weeks and hit “backspace.” Freak.out. I quickly hit ctrl + Z , and all was restored. PHEW!

I use that shortcut so much that sometimes things happen in my life (off-computer) and I instantly think about pressing those buttons to try to get a do-over…

I also have a threadjack. I’m getting married at the end of October and will leaving immediately for my honeymoon in London. I will be gone from the end of October through the first week of November. I’ve been to London in the summer a couple of times, but never in the fall. Any advice on what type of coat to pack? Will it be cold enough for a full length wool coat or will a trench coat with a wool zip out liner be sufficient? Thanks ladies!
Always a NYer
Congrats on getting married, you will have so much fun in London! A classic trench with a wool zip out liner should be good if you layer it over a cardigan or sweater. Don’t forget some fun scarves, gloves, and a fun hat =) Also remember some warm tights if you bring dresses or skirts as the wind can get fierce.
Em
This is exactly what I wore when I went to London in November two years ago and it was perfect. I wore dresses or leggings/sweaters every day and was always warm enough. I always layered two pairs of tights with dresses. You can always remove the trench, lining or sweater if you get warm.
Kanye East
This is my uniform for London in Oct/Nov, too.

Congrats on mawwiage!
I spent about four months in London from September through December of 2009 and the one thing I remember was that it was not as cold as I expected it to be. I wore long-sleeve thin cashmere sweaters and a trench on top. Didn’t really need gloves/hats till about mid-November. I like wearing scarves, so I wore those a lot. Definitely no need for a full wool coat.

*snort* my DF and I toyed with the idea of having our ceremony section start with “mawwiage… mawwiage is what bwings us here togewwer today… mawwiage… that bwessed awwaingement… that dweam wiffin a dweam… ”

Thanks ladies! A lined trench it is!

You will not need a lined wool trench, seriously. London is Just. Not. That. Cold. Temperatures aren’t typically below freezing, and you’re talking low 40s-50s when you’re planning on visiting. A regular trench, nice scarf, and some mid-weight sweaters should be all you need. You will be dying if you try to walk around in a lined wool trenchcoat. I can’t even imagine.
anon
This. I was there for four months last year (Sept thru Dec). It was not as cold as I thought it would be. There was some freak snowstorms in December, but even then I was comfy in a knee-length wool coat with a good hat, scarf, and gloves. For most of the fall, my lightweight trench (over normal work clothes, all suits) was plenty warm.
Nonny
Hey, we are going to be in London at the same time! There should be a Corporette Secret Sign so we can look out for each other (in a city of some 8 million people….yes, I know).
I would also add a good umbrella to your packing list for that time of year. Have fun! I know I am pretty excited – I can only imagine how excited you must be going there for your honeymoon!

Ladies I have a somewhat odd threadjack. Has anyone ever tried combining two foundation colors into one bottle?
I have pale skin with pink undertones and freckles. Its impossible to find a color that looks right on me. I finally found two foundations that if I combine the colors it looks right. I’m hoping to just combine them into one separate bottle (they’re both currently in squeeze type bottles) because I would like to use sponges to apply them and right now I have to use my hands since I have to mix the colors together before application. I know there are so many concerns with how to handle makeup so you don’t have weird bacteria and I just wasn’t sure if there were concerns that I should take into account.
Has anyone tried this to any success or failure?
Makeup Junkie
This is why I cried tears when Prescriptives shut up shop. I can’t ever find a liquid foundation match with my skin either, so I generally use mineral powder which is nice, but kind of messy.
I’ve never considered decanting both foundation shades into a new bottle; what a great idea! I just put a blob of each on the back of my hand and mix it up fresh each day with my foundation brush. Your way sounds much more efficient so thanks for the idea.
Em
I would only do it if they were the same brand and formulation. Otherwise some of the ingredients might interact with each other and cause them to separate or spoil more quickly. You could always mix up smaller batches (enough for a week or two) to test it out.
tinted
I used to be in between colors and it made me crazy until someone at the Laura Mercier counter shared with me a brilliant trick… take the foundation that is a tad too light and then add just a tad of tinted moisterizer to it that is way too dark. It’s amazing. I’m not sure how this would work if you mixed brands though.
Akon
I do something like this:
1) acquire one of those small tubs/containers that they sell for air travel
2) mix in two foundations (I use two brands)
3) add in moisturizer and sunscreen to lighten it up.
I have never found a tinted moisturizer that I liked. This way I get to control both the color and the opaqueness. I make enough to last me a couple of weeks, clean it out and start all over. It’s especially great now that we are transitioning seasons and I don’t have to buy make-up.

I’ve learned to love crossbody bags; they’re just more comfortable for traipsing around the city during the weekends.
On a random note for you tall Corporettes: I was at Ann Taylor yesterday and noticed that all the skirts and suit jackets I tried on were too long for me and I’m not that short.
BMBG
That’s classic Ann Taylor. I’m 5’3″ and I have to get their petite pants hemmed, even if I want to wear them with heels. Whaaaa?
Erin
I know, right? But on the bright side, that means all of my AT pants get made into cuffed hems, which I love.
Bunkster
I have to say I like cross-body bags. When I started working in downtown Boston, I got one – in basic black. It works great on the T because I can move fast and it doesn’t get in my way or the way of other passengers. And it has front pockets for my phone and T pass.
I’m not carrying it right now, though, because you all have inspired me to add a pop of color. I have a beautiful new red suede bag for now, but I’ll probably switch back to the boring black when the weather gets colder.
bizzy
If anyone could recommend a nice, functional midsized crossbody bag suitable for leisure travel, I would really appreciate it! I am visiting NYC this fall, so I’m looking for something practical that won’t mark me out as a tourist — it should be dark or black, right? I’m looking for something big enough to fit a paperback book, my wallet, and a small few odds and ends, but not big enough that I turn into the family pack horse each day!
Bunkster
Endless looks like it has a lot of options. This one looks nice and it got good reviews: http://www.endless.com/The-SAK-104118-Iris-Cross-Body/dp/B002E1AYZE/ref=sr_1_98/?cAsin=B002E1AYUO&fromPage=search&qid=1316720686907&sr=1-98&asins=&asinTitle=The%20SAK%20Iris%20Cross-Body&contextTitle=search%20results&page=1&size=100&node=2054587011&nodes=2054587011&sort=price&colors=519114011
I think the Etienne Aigner and HIDESIGN ones look good and reasonably priced, too
Anonymous
Unless I missed something during the 3 years I lived in New York, a light-colored or bright-colored bag will not mark you as a tourist. I probably would only think “tourist” for items like fanny packs, money belts, and other items sold at travel stores and designed to scare people into purchasing stuff they don’t need. Wear what you feel good in, don’t stop in the middle of the sidewalk, and enjoy your trip!
Ru
Dahling, while black is ALWAYS appropriate in NYC, most of the women (at least across my commute) have brightly colored bags. So go forth and buy a bag you love, whatever color it may be.

Channeling the Countess?
Anti-theft purses
Not needed for NYC, but since this is a purse for travel post, I thought I should mention it.
I just discovered anti-theft purses at Corporate Travel Safety and I am in love – you can get them cheaper at other sites, but they have the best reviews and descriptions. Let me repeat, I live in NYC and you do NOT need this steel reinforced anti-slashed stuff, but I travel to less safe places and these are great — I grew up in Mexico City and know when you can get away with any purse and when a bit of extra protection is advisable. These are not the cutest, but they really seem to work for their purpose.
kz
I bought a tumi cross-body bag for my trip to London this summer that was the perfect size. I’m blanking on the name, but it will probably be obvious to you which one I mean–not too big, not too small, a couple of pockets. Basically perfect. A little more than I wanted to spend on my travel purse, but worth it.
And mine’s teal (because that was the color on sale). I carry it around new york sometimes. You don’t need a dark color to not scream tourist. I know people are tourists when they stop right in front of me in the middle of the sidewalk and debate where they’re going as I’m trying to get to work. Walk briskly, don’t walk in a line 4 people across, and if you must stop, please step to the side. Then we won’t mistake you for a tourist.
PacSafe
I bought a PacSafe Metro crossbody bag for a trip to China in July based on a recommendation here (from the ‘rette who was about to go to South America for a year) and a comment here that backpacks were not appropriate (can’t recall from whom). If you want a crossbody bag, this one is great. It has incredible safety functions. I bought the 200 I think (medium) and it held a lot but then got very heavy and bothered my back. Also, it rubbed against my clothes on my abdomen and pilled them. In short, I prefer to stick with my Coach leather backpack and sling it over my frontside in crowds. PacSafe also makes backpacks, and we bought one for my fiancé. After one day, we switched and I wore the backpack. It was much more comfortable than the Metro, but it was so secure (all closures double close) that it was not nearly as convenient for me to quickly pull out items when entering museums, metro gates etc.
Jay
I love this bag http://www1.bloomingdales.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=514213&PseudoCat=se-xx-xx-xx.esn_results . I bought it several years ago while traveling through Europe. I live in NY and still use it frequently. It has really stood up to frequent use and the occasional overpacking!
Govvie
Ha, Kat, we must be in the same age group, because that is exactly how I feel about cross-body bags and exactly why! I keep looking at them anyway, but don’t think I’ll be pulling the trigger.

I appreciate the functionality and sleek look of a slim cross-body, but will be skipping this trend. The front part of the strap inevitably nestles itself in unless I am wearing something very structured on top, creating a Chest Crevasse that is wildly unflattering on me.
I'm an idiot
Regular commenter …anon for this. I missed a crucial detail (think 10-K filing or court filing) and found my own error yesterday. Told my boss. I have major egg on my face, made my boss look bad, have to be publicly identified as the idiot who made the mistake. I’m somewhat senior in my org. Am hoping not to be fired, demoted etc., etc.
I’m asking for prayers for a positive (or not negative) outcome from any and all denominations and good thoughts sent out into the universe from anyone so inclined.
JJ
Good luck! I’ve never met a lawyer (or business-person, for that matter) who had been working for at least a few years and had never made a mistake like this. I’ve been there, too. It sucks and it consumes your life for a while, but everything will go on.
Not to out myself, but my employer recently had something *very* embarrassing come to light on a nationwide website(s) and while I was not involved with the “mistake,” I’m very good friends with the people that were. They were miserable for a week or so and I know they worried about their jobs and how their actions affected the perception of our employer, but it’s been a few months now and people don’t give it a second thought. I’ll be thinking of you, but remember – this too shall pass.

Ugh, so sorry. Mistakes happen, even to people who are generally really careful and conscientious. We have all been there, and it really is the worst feeling in the world. It will pass! You will be fine. Good thoughts coming your way.
Lydia
Sorry, that sucks. Everyone has been there. I know saying that won’t make you feel any better though. Positive thoughts your way!
You might feel better
This happened to a litigation associate at my former firm who missed a motion to compel deadline. It might help you to feel better if you do some research about what the worst thing is that can happen, what the options are to file late or correct the situation etc.
WME
I usually try to think through the worst case scenario and realize that I could survive it, even if it would be tough. Like, “Even if I lose my job, I’ll still be healthy and have my family and friends, I’ll have time to write a book, etc.” Usually, it turns out better than the worst case scenario, but convincing myself that I’m strong enough to deal really helps.
Herbie

On a non-Ellen note, I had serious VPL yesterday at work; didn’t notice until I got home.
Need to go buy some relatively inexpensive black slacks this weekend as a stopgap. I’m probably just going to hit up Express and go two sizes up from “normal”, but suggestions under $75 are welcome (the cheaper the better).
Maddie Ross
Love the gap perfect trousers. I have black and navy. I do tend to wear thongs or boyshorts with all my pants, so I can’t speak to the VPL tendencies, but I’ve been happy with these pants. They also fit comfortably over my (ample) derriere, so you’ll probably be safe.
Argie
Ditto, except for my recommendation is the Premium Pant Modern Boot Cut. The Perfect Trousers felt like the rise wasn’t high enough and cut kind of funny. The dressing room attendant and I both noted on it. But – Gap has several cuts in their dressier pant selection (which are a poly-blend, be warned) in several dark neutral colors – and at about $50 ish, I think.
Sydney Bristow
Third this rec. I like the modern bootcut ones so much that I have them in both black and gray.
Bunkster
I originally bought the curvy and then I lost some weight so now I have several pairs of the Perfect Trousers. They’re awesome. I even bought the premium pants in the True Straight (I think that’s the name) for my mom. She’s a size 4 petite. She loves them.

Love the gaps! Seriously, comfiest trouser. I like the Perfect Trouser, but I think it depends on body type more than anything else.

Macy’s is having a big sale this weekend. I can usually find a basic suit or two there for under $100 (once got a basic black suit for $34). Be sure to get there in the morning, the best deals are “door busters” that end at 1pm or so.
kz
New York and Company is my standard “need cheap pants now” option. They’re always having coupons and sales, and they’re perfectly fine. Not great, not award winning, but fine.
kz
and if you have a Limited near you, try them. I haven’t been in a while since they don’t have one in nyc (sad, they should really fix that), but I used to like them for decent, not-too-expensive pants. You can sometimes find their pants at Marshall’s and TJ Maxx.
Legally Yours
Nordstroms has the Halogen Taylor fit pant on sale for $49. Bought them in black, gray and tan. http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/halogen-taylor-trousers/3230018?origin=category&resultback=986

TJ Maxx or Nordstrom Rack. TJ Maxx ususally has the basic pants from the Limited for $16.99 I think. I’ve gotten a few pairs there in the past. Quality is very good for the price.
Erin
I fourth the rec for Gap Perfect Trousers, but I’d actually suggest you go for some of the $98 wool-blend pants from Ann Taylor. They have sales and coupons all the time so I am sure you can get them for $75, and they are so much nicer than the Gap ones – lined, wool, last for ages. My favorites are the “curvy” ones.
LadyEnginerd
I fifth the Gap recommendation. Due to the crawling around on the floor fixing things nature of my job, the fact that they are machine washable makes my life so much easier.
Anonymous
Thanks, I’ll look into those. I too crawl and fix for a living.
Little Lurker
Thanks, all!
Sounds like I’m going to check out Gap, Nordie’s and Ann Taylor. Glad I asked.
AT
Late to the game, agree on both the Gap and Halogen suggestions, but you might also check Target. I just bought their Fit 4 (?I think it was 4? the midwaist curvy ones) bootcut pants and for 27.99 they are great. Not sure how long-lasting/durable they’ll be, but they are very comfortable, machine washable, and flattering to my pear-shape in a way that’s comparable to the others mentioned.
Chini
I don’t like the look of the pictured bag, although I love crossbody bags in general–and the Cole Haan crossbody I bought this summer in particular. I like the security against purse snatchers, and I like having my hands free. I always have to hold on to shoulder bags, which is a hassle when my hands are full with dog leash, umbrella, coffee, etc on my walking commute.
The key to no shoulder pain is to not weigh the bag down too much (smaller is better than full-on messenger bag), and to pad where the strap rests. I usually carry a scarf for this purpose.
Ebro fin
Do only I have this problem? I am very flat chested, and cross body bags move around in some very uncomfortable ways. I’ve been assuming that happened because, well, there was nothing in the way to stop it?
Ebro fin
I am clearly procrastinating a “one pager” I am supposed to be writing. It’s Thursday, I’m tired, it’s date night, it’s so humid my hair is a freak show. Sigh.
Humidity and Hair
Allow me to help you procrastinate.
How do ‘rettes with curly hair keep it straight and smooth after a blowout?
I can blowdry my curly hair very straight and smooth. But bythe end of the workday, it looks messy. And if I go outside in the evening, when the air is moist where I live, it becomes both messier and also frizzy. Why doesn’t this happen to Catherine Middleton or Michele Bachmann or Nancy Pelosi? They are outside in all kinds of weather, yet their hair remains perfect.
How do people deal with this?
Erin
It sounds like you’re not using hairspray? The answer is hairspray. Lots of it. (Speaking as a curly-haired woman living in what feels like the most humid place on Earth.)
Humidity and Hair
Which one? Does that mean I shouldn’t rummy fingers through my hair all day?
I usually use Sebastien Shaper Plus, which does nothing. Today, I tried Alterna Bamboo, which worked better until I destroyed it by finger combing my hair.
Erin
Yeah, definitely don’t touch your hair – that makes it frizz. I like Garnier Fructis hairspray, but it’s quite stiff – might be too much if you’re wearing your hair down and straight. Have you checked out naturallycurly dot com? The ladies there usually have lots of advice.
stc
I used to use the Oribe anti-humidity spray and liked that. Plus hairspray. Then I moved some place really dry. It’s great on my hair, crappy on my skin and lips.
Ms. No Name.
I won a big Motion this week, which made me feel justified in booking a last minute vacation to the beach. While it will probably be rainy and not completely sunny, I’m hoping for a least a few hours by the pool/beach.
Problem is: I can’t find a last minute swimsuit as it is September, and I can’t fit into my old swimsuit, which I didn’t use all summer (I blame this on the fiancee moving in and too many meals together!). I’m desperate for recommendations of places any of you ladies think may still have suits? I’m in NYC and we leave Saturday.
FWIW, I tried Old Navy, Target (Atlantic Terminal) and H & M. My work is close to Century 21 and soho.
Bunkster
Try Land’s End Canvas. Is there a Sears near you? They carry Land’s End and Land’s End Canvas.
Ms. No Name.
There is a Sears! Thanks for the suggestion. It’s one of those stores I forget about for some reason.
I guess I can always buy a suit on the island, but starting off vacation with shopping seems like work. Probably because I spend too much time online shopping while working and now I associate the two.;)
kz
I’m pretty sure Macy’s keeps swimsuits in stock year round. Ask one of the salespeople, though, because I can never find things in that store and I think it moves depending on the season. They definitely have them in midwinter when people are fleeing new york for warm vacations, but I bet they have some now, too.
NYCAssociate
Try Town Shop on the Upper West Side at Broadway between 81 and 82.

Sporting goods stores will still carry swimsuits (though they’ll be sporty ones) – think Clark’s, Sports Authority, Modell’s.

Guiltiest of the Guilty: Jersey Shore. Dance Moms (though I sometimes want to jump into the television and intervene. seriously, I don’t understand these people).
Somewhat less embarrassing: Project Runway, Shows Where People Get Murdered And It’s Conveniently Solved In 45 Minutes or Fewer. (Various flavors of Criminal Minds, NCIS, CSI, etc).
Shows I don’t watch: Big Bang Theory, because it reminds me too much of the people at work.
Ms. No Name.
I recently started finding new shows, including: Drop Dead Diva and United States of Tara. No one knows I watch Switched at Birth, which I balance out with Teen Mom (which is really, really terrible I know).
Sydney Bristow
I watch Switched at Birth too. I think its really good!
I haven’t had a chance to watch any shows since the new seasons started. I’m planning to check out Ringer (her wardrobe looks great in the previews), Terra Nova, and The New Girl.

I watched Suits all summer, even though I am a lawyer and should know better.
And, I am ashamed to admit, even anonymously, The Bachelor/Bachelorette. (Though obviously that is not new.)
Now that that’s off my chest…
Bunkster
I want to check out the new Prime Suspect, which is on tonight. And I’ll check out Pan Am, when it debuts on Sunday. I may even check out Hart of Dixie, because I love Rachel Bilson and the guy who played Jason Street on Friday Night Lights. Ringer with Sarah Michelle Gellar was disappointing.
I still love Glee, even though the storylines aren’t consistent. And I love Gossip Girl, mostly for Chuck, Blair, and the fashion. I’m mourning Friday Night Lights, which is why I’m in the market for a new show.

I’m continuing with Vampire Diaries for their third season (I swear it’s good. Seriously) and Nikita when it starts back up tomorrow. So yes, my two fall shows are on a channel designed for teenage girls.
And I’ll watch Big Bang Theory online (it airs same time as Vampire Diaries and I don’t have dvr). I watched New Girl, with Zooey Daschenal (sp?) on Tuesday. It had potential. I may give it another few weeks and see how I feel about it. And I agree with Bunkster, Ringer was disappointing (but can we talk about how Sarah Michelle Gellar hasn’t aged a day in the decade since Buffy ended?)

I miss Hellcats and love love love Gossip Girl!

I watched the new Prime Suspect last night and, though not in love with it, will definitely be DVR’ing the season. I just have to try not to compare it to the original, and I think I can thoroughly enjoy it for what it is.

Castle (not new, but definitely a fave. LOVE Nathan Fillion!), Bones ( continuing fun – when it comes back for its short, 13-episode season). Will try to keep up with Ringer and Revenge. Supernatural, when its back. Doctor Who for a few more episodes until the season is over.
Kady
ah, a fellow browncoat.
MeliaraofTlanth
I really need to watch Castle, because Nathan Fillion is awesome (oh, firefly…)
Did you see doctor who won’t be back until late 2012 after this season ends? I’m going to have withdrawal.
Kady
I was pleasantly surprised by Reven8e (see what I did there?). I liked Emily Van Camp in Brothers and Sisters, which I’m sad is cancelled this season. Grey’s was always my go to weekday pleasure, but it’s kinda jumped the shark recently. I’m most excited about Walking Dead, which comes back in October.
Kady
Oh, and I’m totally watching American Horror Story, just for Tami Taylor : )
Niko
Is there a Bay Area/SF Corporette meet up? I just got a job out there and would love to find some other gals. Am I too late?
SF Bay Associate
Niko, it’s tomorrow! Reposado in Palo Alto, 1pm. See you there!
Niko
Augh, no fair! I won’t be able to make it. :(

Anyone getting that annoying pop-up window with the glittery girl that forces you to go to the survey page? It’s really getting to be a nuisance.
GRA
YES!!!
Herbie
I’ve seen it, but just clicked the close button and it went away. Is there one that you can’t close without clicking through?
