I've gone back and forth on posting these earrings because there are some negative reviews on the Urban Outfitters site — but ultimately I still think these are too good of a deal to pass up. These same earrings are still priced at $95-$100 on other websites, but are marked to $50 on the UO site. Now, maybe that's because they're too subtle and not “blingy” enough for the UO audience — but then, isn't that perfect for the office? Does anyone have recommendations for summer-weight quilts or comforters? I’ve been not seriously looking at Target, but nothing is really jumping out at me. I’d prefer washable (I have a cat), and something that feels heavy, i.e. a quilt instead of a fleece, if that makes sense.
cfm
Homegoods is the best place for this if you have it near you
NOLA
Yeah or find out which TJ Maxx or Marshall’s in your area has the most household goods. Usually it’s just one or two that carry a significant amount of bedding. I got my quilt at TJ Maxx and it’s just what you describe.

We have a Pottery Barn quilt that I love. It’s been close to 2 years and multiple washings and it looks good as new. There’s a few on sale now on their website for around $100-150 (or if you have a PB outlet, check there – they sometimes have great deals).
My mom is a bit obsessed with the whole Shabby Chic look and she bought their quilt from their Target line and while its soft and lovely, it looks very faded after about the same time period. I seriously love the look/feel of Anthro quilts but they just don’t last long (esp. with a cat). The PB quilt is pretty perfect for summer and spring/fall. In the winter, we break out the down comforter and fold the quilt at the bottom of the bed for a pretty look.
January
+1 to PB quilts. I’ve had a couple since graduating from college and they are a very nice weight for summer (and you can adjust year-round with a heavier blanket underneath, too!)
Bluejay
Look for down blankets (or synthetic down blankets) rather than a comforter. They’re very lightweight. I got mine at JC Penney; it’s not the world’s greatest, but it does the trick. You can find a wider range of higher-quality ones at stores like Bed Bath Beyond.
rosie
Do you have an Ikea near you? I have a light weight comforter from Ikea that I just put in a duvet cover (also from Ikea–I really like their patterns). I just switch it out for my down comforter in the winter. If you go, they typically have all their comforters out with a tag about what materials they are and what temperatures they are for, so it’s easy to figure out what they have. I generally find the bedding at Ikea to be good quality and reasonably priced.
a.k.
I got a duvet cover from Ikea that has some texture to it – it’s thicker than just one piece of fabric on the top side – and finally figured out that just using that, without anything in the cover, is the right weight. It’s about the equivalent of 3 sheets, so it’s substantial but not suffocating in the summer.
JessBee
We have a summer-weight comforter from Ikea to put in our duvet cover (from somewhere else…Macy’s maybe?). We still find it awfully warm sometimes, but I think it’s us, not the comforter! It’s a great solution, and lets us change up the appearance whenever we want. Okay…it lets *me* change up the appearance whenever *I* want. I’d faint if DH ever looked around the room and said “Do you think this color is getting boring?” :)
rosie
The last time we were in Ikea, I asked DH what he thought about getting a new duvet cover, and he didn’t understand why. In theory, I would like to change up the appearance whenever I want (and I’ve had this one since 2007!), but I guess in practice, inertia happens. It’s actually been too warm for us as well right now with the 100+ temps, but usually it works well.
Seattleite
Last night, when I was replacing the duvet cover half-plastered because it hadn’t been dry yet when I left for my boozy afternoon with friends, I SO wished I had an extra. You wouldn’t think a 2 layer piece of cotton would take 3 dryer cycles, but it did…
Freyja
for online, try Domestications. Some (a lot) is achingly old fashioned, but I got a great summer quilt that lasted a number of years for maybe $70, washed many times.
Also, Garnet Hill, if you don’t mind a higher price tag.
SoCal Gal
Second Garnet Hill. I got a really nice lightweight quilt there and it’s held up quite well.
r
Check out the duvets at Ikea. I have one of the faux-down ones (feels just like down, but w/out the allergies). They have them in a variety of weights. Mine works in both summer and winter, but depending on where you live, you may need a summer one and a winter one.
PharmaGirl
I use a coverlet for the summer… bought it at HomeGoods. I was there today and saw loads of them in the bedding section.
NOLA
Oh, and you might want to look at matelasse coverlets. Some of them have beautiful patterns and they are generally lighter weight than a quilt.
IMMJ
I like matelasse for summer – it’s got enough weight that it feels like something but it’s not too warm. We got ours at Lands’ End. Here’s a link to what they currently have. http://tinyurl.com/chkf35p
Research, Not Law
I like these as well. I’d also check JC Penny. It’s been a while since I bought a coverlet, but the cotton blanket that I bought there for summer is fantastic.

I also had some good luck with a quilt from Kohl’s. Lovely butter yellow. Makes me happy every time I see it!

I just wanted to offer a ringing endorsement of our very own resident jewelry designer extraordinaire, Kanye East. Last week, I purchased a lovely gold and silver necklace from her. We corresponded on Etsy before my purchase, because I was concerned I might have an allergic reaction to the necklace, and also because I wanted a slight modification to the necklace. She told me she wasn’t aware of the metal in the necklace causing problems, and so I placed the order. I received the lovely necklace in record time, with the requested modification (at no extra charge, I might add, and with a special discount for readers of this site), and it was so pretty I took off the necklace I was wearing and put it on immediately. And of course, as luck would have it, within 3 hours I had a big green circle around my neck. Buyer beware, right? So I emailed Kanye asking her if she had any suggestions on preventing this problem, and she immediately offered to exchange the chain for me to a metal that I knew I was not allergic to. She would totally have been within her rights not to exchange the necklace – I knew I was taking a risk when I bought it – but she was so nice and she even said she felt badly that I reacted to the chain and didn’t let me pay for her shipping costs to send me the new one. I’m thrilled that I’ll get to keep wearing my pretty new necklace. Thanks, Kanye!
TL;DR: Kanye East is the awesomest and you should all buy her jewelry right now.

I also just received my custom-made and custom designed necklace from Kanye. It was based off a coffee break item from here that I liked several weeks (or months now maybe) back that she and I worked on over a period of time, with her suggesting several beads and chains to put together a beautiful, fun, bright red statement necklace. Her prices are reasonable, she ships promptly and her work is lovely.
Haven’t worn it enough times to comment on quality or anything….but its aesthetically one of the most beautiful pieces of jewelry I’ve ever owned. Bit thumbs up.
Yay!

I totally agree! I ordered a necklace from her for my colleague’s birthday with a slight modification and she still got it out that day. It was beautiful and perfect for the birthday.

Similar in style, I just bought these in the “lilac” color: http://www.anthropologie.com/anthro/product/741809.jsp?color=055

Pretty!
Here’s a semi-relevant threadjack — for those of you with weak earlobes, where do you look for very lightweight earrings? Any favorite brands that are lightweight?
My lobes aren’t strong enough to support a heavy earring – they’ve already stretched a great deal since I got them pierced as a kid. Since I have no desire to look like I’ve gauged them, I only wear extremely light earrings. Something that dangles a bit looks best with my face shape (or I would just go with small studs, all the time). Would love some recommendations!
MissJackson
This isn’t what you asked, but have you tried any of the products that you stick on the back of your ear to help support the stretched hole? I have the same issue, and haven’t tried them myself, but have heard some good reviews. I think that they are called ear lifts or something like that.
Someone else on this site recently mentioned that you can also have your doctor stitch your hole partially closed. I don’t know anything about that, but I’m intrigued and maybe the original poster can fill us both in.
Z.
I use these little clear stickers that I find in horrible mail-order magazines that my mom swears by (like Harriet Carter), but they really help me keep earrings in my ear. Thanks to a botched re-piercing when I was in middle school, each ear now has 2 holes that have now melded together to keep me from wearing even posts. But with the round mesh stickers, I can wear almost any kind of earrings. Still stick mostly to posts, but at least now they don’t start to flop over or (worse yet) fall through my piercing.
Hel-lo
Have you tried small hoops? I wear smalls silver hoops fairly frequently and love them.
oclg
I have had some success replacing the backs of studs with backs that have those clear plastic disks on them. I think they help redistribute the weight. I have semi-weak earlobes so ymmv.
mamabear
I have a slightly stretched piercing on one side (thank you, 1980s heavy hoop earrings) so I’m really careful about heavy earrings, too.
First of all, this is your excuse to only wear fine jewelry, which is almost always smaller and lighter than costume.
I would look for post earrings with omega backs, which are a post plus a hinged upside-down-U closure thingy on the back side. They are a hybrid between a clip-on and a regular post, and take a lot of the weight off the piercing. If you google “omega back earring” you’ll see what I’m talking about.
I also like to dangle things from huggie hoops. The hoops are secure and flush against the earlobe, so you won’t accidentally hook your finger through the hoop and give your piercing a tug when you’re fussing with your hair. Your jeweler, or even you with the help of a bead shop, can create some little rings with various things dangling from them (pearls, charms, tiny stones) that you slip onto the hoop. Very pretty, gives a dangly look, but tends to be much less swingy and therefore pulling than a regular dangle earring.
mamabear
Uh, that’s less pulling, and I’m not sure how else to describe it. :)
Darby
i really like stella & dot earrings — they are big, dangly & very lightweight. highly recommend.
Research, Not Law
Agree with small hoops for daily wear and fine jewelry.
gov anon
I know a lot of people don’t care for home party type brands, but check Lia Sophia. The earrings, even the dangly ones, are very light weight.
Late Bird
I don’t have a recommendation for a particular brand, but I tend to shop for earrings in-person, b-c I want to make sure the weight is minimal. I usually go to Macy’s and test how heavy they swing against the carton. I’ve even picked up some a lot of earrings on the clearance rack that way. I found my favorite (but now lost) pair of Lauren by Ralph Lauren earrings there.

Dress Help
Hi ladies, I’m going to a c* cktail party at a CLE that my firm is hosting in a few weeks and trying to figure out what to wear ahead of the game so I’m not frantically trying on clothes right before. I’ve been told it is business casual with men wearing blazers, no tie.
I plan to wear a nice sheath dress. My main question is do you think I need to wear a jacket / blazer to fit in or would I be ok with a nice sweater? Option 1: the dress I’d like to wear is sleeveless and the only non-suit jacket I have that remotely goes with it doesn’t look all that great, so I’d prefer to to wear a sweater. Option 2: I can switch to another dress that said jacket would go better with, but the dress is linen and I don’t really want to be wrinkled. Option 3: I can wear a suiting dress with sleeves and avoid the sweater / blazer issue entirely, but the suiting dress is more of a winter dress.
Short version: do you ladies think I need a jacket when the men are wearing blazers, or is a sweater over a sheath dress fine when it is a professional c* cktail party?
Former MidLevel
I think that sweaters are fine as a general matter. You just don’t want a super-casual one – e.g., really chunky knit or really loose and sloppy.
TCFKAG
Alternative three, do you have a coordinating wrap or scarf that you could use to dress up the sheath dress and make it more c**ktail appropriate?
I like when I see this on people at this type of event and always thing “I should try that” and it seems like it would be perfect for your situation.
Otherwise, I think the sweater is fine. I also think the sleeved suiting dress is fine if its indoors at a hotel, since those are freezing all the time anyways. I’d be worried about wearing linen all day and then going to an event.
NOLA
A wrap definitely makes an outfit look a bit more dressy than a cardigan.
GW
I think a little sweater is perfectly appropriate (and actually better than a wrap, which to me seems more for a “real” cocktail party, not a work-related one). I often wear a fine gauge knit cardigan in place of a jacket/blazer. As long as it’s relatively slim-fitting, I think it looks professional but a little more approachable than a jacket/blazer.
MaggieLizer
This is a know your office/event kind of question. It’s summer, so chances are pretty good that people will dress more on the casual side of business casual and your sheath dress + cardigan will be perfect. But if all the other women in your firm are wearing jackets, or if all the men are wearing suits, I would probably wear a jacket too.
Dress Help
Thanks ladies – I’m glad to know sheath & cardigan is likely appropriate. I like the wrap idea and will have to try that out if not this time certainly at another event. This event is heavily male and men aren’t wearing suits, so that’s why I’m trying to figure out the approximate female counterpoint to tie-less & blazer & professional party. Men have it so easy.
Abigail Joan
Beautiful and just the right amount of sparkle. I think you’re on to something as to why the earrings aren’t flying out the doors at Urban Outfitters!
No Problem
Is it possible to own too many of the same type of clothing? I ask because I’m eyeing a white lace top at BR (30% off sale through tonight), but I keep telling myself that I already own three white short sleeved shirts. But at the same time…not really. One of them is a basic v-neck tshirt that I wear as a layer under things during cooler months, but only occassionally on its own during the summer. Another one is scoop necked with an embellishment on the neckline but I don’t wear it that much because it’s sort of eh. The third has a great embellishment down the front and looks great under a suit jacket, but alas I do not wear suit jackets often and the underarms are a bit too discolored to wear it on its own.
This is a long winded way of saying that yes, I should probably get the shirt from BR, and ditch at least one of the embellished shirts. But I suppose my question is, does anybody else find that you keep buying the same item over and over again so that suddenly you own, say, four black sweaters, or not buy something you really could use because the items you have in your closet really shouldn’t be there to begin with?
Kontraktor
I don’t mind buying items of the same general type so long as they are sufficiently different/offer qualities that make the pieces unique compared to the others. Your situation sounds totally fine- sure, your shirts are white, but they have different necklines, embellishments, are made of different fabric, etc. Now, if you were going to buy a white shirt that was almost identical to 10 other identical ones you already had and it wasn’t going to offer anything different, I’d tell you to hold off. But buying pieces that are of one type but quite different from one another is what helps not only to preserve the wearability of our clothes (if you are wearing the same single X thing all the time it’s going to wear out faster than if you have a couple instances of that item and rotate), but also to make our wardrobes versatile and unique.
Former MidLevel
Agreed.
Godzilla
Yes, because I need things in ALL THE COLORS. But also, I think you should get rid of BOTH of the embellished shirts because you don’t need to wear anything that makes you feel “eh” and who needs clothes with discolored underarms? Although, that last shirt, you can treat it with baking soda and/or vinegar to get rid of the stains (not bleach, tho). In conclusion, get the new shirt.
No Problem
Thanks everyone for supporting my online shopping problem ;). I pulled the trigger, also picking up a sleeveless white tank with a bit of lace on the front, a black embellished open cardigan, and a bright yellow skirt. I’m hoping they will go together for a cute outfit!
I will definitely be getting rid of the white shirt that is very eh, and will try to treat the underarms of the other one with baking soda (thanks, Godzilla).
Godzilla

It’s Monday, the least I can do is provide good reasons for enabling.
Merabella
Godzilla, this made me feel better. I also need things in ALL THE COLORS! I find something I like, and I buy it in every color. There are dresses and shirts that I love so much, that when they die I’m contemplating taking them to a tailor to have them use those pieces as patterns to make me new clothes in ALL THE COLORS!
Herbie
I’m this way, too. And even worse, if I find something I really love, I’ll buy multiple in the same color to stock up so when one wears out, I have more. … … … I had to wonder there for a second whether I have a problem, but then I decided that this is just really smart shopping. :)
anon
I believe that I own six black cardigans. But one is short sleeved, one is boyfriend style, one hits at the hip, etc. And I wear them all, frequently. A black cardigan isn’t just a black cardigan, just like your white shirts aren’t just white shirts.
That being said, my mom has an entire separate drawer for her white tees, because those things attract stains like it’s their job.

These are so pretty! This is so painful though because I’m officially on a shopping ban (for everything but essentials) until the end of September…
I know other ladies in the hive have been on shopping bans before. What do you do to stem the addiction? (Yes I’m a self-diagnosed shopaholic who is already feeling the pain even though it’s only been 2 days…)
Equity's Darling
I’ve been limiting my shopping the past month or so, and I found that re-organizing my closet really helped, because I really realized that I have a lot of clothing, and more so, that I don’t have space for more clothing.
I also found other things to do during lunch/after work/on the weekend, because I’m most likely to shop when I’m bored.
And I ordered a new credit card again (just the card itself, didn’t open a new account), so now I don’t know the number off by heart, which makes on-line shopping much harder.
MissJackson
And delete all of your “saved” credit card info from your online retailer accounts! That makes pushing the button way too easy.
Godzilla
When I went on a shopping ban, I did other things so that I wouldn’t have time to think about shopping, ie, got a life. I went to the gym, hung out with my friends, cooked, cleaned, all kinds of grownup things. I got so used to not shopping that I found it annoying when I actually NEEDED to buy things. I also set up filters for all my store/deal emails so I wouldn’t feel tempted to spave (spend money to save money, so terrible). I used to buy something at least 2-3/week, so believe me, it can be done.
Nancy P
I look at my checking account and credit card account daily and pat myself on the back for having so few expenditures.
Hel-lo
This. I kept a keen eye on my finances. I left my credit cards on the other side of my office, so entering my credit card info meant I had to get up and walk across the room. (Delete the pre-stored credit card info.)
Ever week, balance your checkbook the old fashioned way, with adding and subtracting. Keep your receipts and total them up, and subtract from the balance. It gives you intimate knowledge of your spending, in a way you don’t usually have using plastic instead of cash.
CKB
Thanks to online banking I transfer the cash out of my bank account to my credit card as soon as possible after making a purchase. That way I never forget what I’ve spent.
I also have a separate bank account for spending money. It really helps me stay on track because I can see at a glance how much ‘fun money’ I have left, and I know any purchases I’ve made on my credit card have already been paid.
Batgirl
Oh, I can’t wait to see the responses to this. Also a shopaholic! I have tried more an $x per month approach, though.
Kontraktor
I wouldn’t consider myself shopping obsessed, but I’ve half heartedly thought about setting up a tumblr or blog where I post a different outfit, once a day, with the goal to wear everything in my closet at least once. And see how long it takes to wear everything. Another variant is wearing something different for X days in a row (maybe 100? that’s only about 3 months) with only things in my closet. Maybe try something like this? It could be fun to have a blog/daily update thing to keep your mind off buying new stuff, help you to streamline your wardrobe and figure out what you’re missing in a more targeted manner (so future shopping after the ban is more focussed), and also help you learn to be creative with what you have already (so you switch to a mindset of using what you have rather than always getting something new).
TO lawyer
this is a fabulous idea! I think it’s more the knowing that I can’t shop is what’s bothering me rather than the fact that I actually need new things. My closet is bursting at the seams and I have a few new pieces still hanging with the tags. (please don’t judge me – I know I don’t need new clothes but for some reason pretty clothes always get the best of me…)
Something else that I’m hoping is going to help is that my boyfriend is also on the same shopping ban which we’re planning on breaking in NYC. Still – all the pretty clothes and accessories on this site are going to drive me nuts. (not that I’m going to stop…)
Kontraktor
I totally think a blog/creative challenge to wear everything in your closet or a new outfit every day until your ban is over could help channel the urges to shop. I find for me, sometimes buying new things is less because I need them, but more because I like the hunt, I like new things in general, and I like the creative challenge of finding that *one perfect piece* that will fill a wardrobe hole. It sounds like you might be the same. Perhaps if you commit to making new outfits with what you have, you’ll still feel creative and like you’re doing something different (especially if you focus on trying some new outfits out with the tagged things you’ve not worn before). Then maybe the lack of shopping won’t be so bad.
The Slapdash Sewist
Spend your time learning how to sew? You won’t want to shop again after that, I promise. Though sewing involves its own shopping problems…(too much fabric, ahem).
CKB
Yes! When I am on a spending freeze and want something new I sew. Just check my ‘to sew’ list & go from there. Helps with fitting issues as well because I can make the bottom 2 sizes bigger if I need to. The only way I’ll ever have a sheath dress that fits is if I sew it myself.
Merabella
When I was on a shopping ban, I got the same high from pinning things on pinterest. It also made me more creative when putting outfits together with the stuff I already had. Try doing a 30 for 30 deal where you take 30 pieces from your wardrobe and try to make 30 days of outfits from it. I found when I took myself off the shopping ban I didn’t really want to buy anything new because I had found so many new outfits from what I already had.

Suggestions for a gift for my principal?
I’m finishing my articles in about 6 weeks, and usually the articling students at my firm give a gift to their principal. It’s an odd relationship, not really mentor-mentee, though he has been an involved principal (which isn’t usually common at national firms). He’s really nice, but I don’t know much about his interests, and he’s the same age as my father. Other students have given a nice bottle of scotch, nice pens, etc. which all seem fine, but I thought I’d see if there were any other recommendations. I think he’s been a good principal- broadly interested in my learning, making sure I’m treated well, gives me interesting work when he thinks I’ll enjoy it, etc.

What are your thoughts on a tan-ish suit (I wouldn’t say it’s khaki, but not brown either). I’m talking about the warm sienna color j crew does in its 120s wool. It’s on sale right now so I could get two pieces of the suit for just over 200. But I look at the suit as a whole and just get a picture of the 1970’s – it looks like its begging for a shirt with wide lapels worn over the jacket. Does anyone else think this about tan suits, or are they a totally normal thing that people wear and I’m nuts?
Bonus points – does anyone know if people (acceptably) wear suits of this color in DC?

I have a three-piece suit in that color (suit, pants, jacket). I find the bottoms to be very versatile as summer bottoms and the full-suit helpful in the summer in a formal office when you want to look suited up but really don’t want to wear grey or black. Also good for summer business formal events.
Anyway, I’m a fan.

Do you think it only works for summer? Or maybe into fall with jewel-toned tops? I don’t want to buy it now and have to wait a year to wear it, I’m not a patient person!

TJ! for the 2nd time, I ‘ve applied for the wrong job. I am 10 yrs out of law school & apparently get lost in the maze of corporate HR websites where there are multiple atty positions posted (uh in my defense, I tend to be trolling those sites late at night, with a li’l beverage at hand, oops). I always think that I apply for the most appropriate senior position, but when I get a call for a screening interview, it turns out they are interviewing me for a more junior position. The last time this happened, I said I was not interested in the more junior one, and that was the end of that. Now I wonder if it makes more sense to just get through the process and get invited (HOPEFULLY) to the on site interview & then ask the potential supervisor if I mightn’t be a better fit for the more sr position? And yeah, maybe apply to these things sober & awake…
Anon
If this has happened more than once, are you sure that your experience is not closer to what they are looking for as the more junior position, rather than the more senior one?
PBJ
Maybe! Although it has happened twice. Both times to mega multinational companies – & the person doing the screening is an HR-bot. I am overthinking this, certainly for the most recent one, I applied for the wrong job. Not sure what I can do other than maybe apply for the right one.
New TJ: Forester (pre 2009 of course) or Outback (pre 2010- am just old skool) ?
TCFKAG
Pre-2010 Outback (I hate the re-design on the Outback) over the pre-2009 Forester (though I like the post-2009 Forester, so there’s that.)
TCFKAG
I feel I should elaborate. The post-2010 Outback is just too big for our needs (that thing is a tank) though it drives pretty well, we test drove it. We love the pre-2010 look of the wagon Outbacks, but its hard to pay what they’re reselling for right now.
On the other hand, I actually prefer the look of the post-2009 redesigned Forester because it looks more SUV-ey and less…I don’t know…weird? I just was never in love stylistically with the pre-2009 design. We drove the Forester and really like it and it has tons of room.
Um…can you tell my husband has been in the market for a car for 4eva and has wobbled back and forth between almost every mid-sized crossover wagon, hatchback, smallish SUV on the market?
rosie
It’s ok TCFKAG, we can have opposite Outback/Forester feelings. Can we agree that the Impreza WRX is awesome, though?
FP Angie
Please let me know what your husband decides! We’re in the market for something similar…
Scully
TCFKAG, have you thought about the new Crosstrek? It’s basically a taller Imprezza hatchback.
rosie
I can comment on the Subie t/j. Do you not like how big the new ones are? Because I thought I wouldn’t, but I test drove a 2010 Outback and it was awesome, plus it got good gas mileage for its size.
I do like the look of the pre-2010s, though. I like look of the new Outback, but I don’t like the Forester. I used to have a 2006 Forester (picked over the Outback based on price), and it was a great car, too. If you’re talking about pre-2010, I think the Forester is more SUV-looking and the Outback is more wagon-looking, so it depends on what you’re going for. One thing to keep in mind is that there is a lot more leg room in the newer designs, so my SO (over 6′) is much more comfortable in our new Outback, which was disappointing, because he’d been wanting to get an older Outback as a second car (in his dream color), but the seat just doesn’t go back far enough to be comfortable. I think the older Forester design may have more leg room than the older Outback, if that is a concern for you.
Kontraktor
This is what I was thinking. I’ve routinely applied for positions at Level X and then during the screening/first rounds, find out I am being interviewed for position at Level X-1 because that is where it seems like my experience is better suited. Bots also only do so good a job and may be screening on key words or phrases, not necessarily years of experience. It’s hard to know.
Plus, in this economy, it really seems like so many jobs are taking ridiculously overqualified people. I got through a few rounds of interviews at a (large, multinational, etc.) corporation for a position that required less than 5 years experience and I was ultimately rejected for somebody with 20+ years (and was also the youngest candidate by 20+ years…).
But, if you really think you’re applying to the wrong jobs, maybe try to really read things carefully before applying? Or maybe send the post to a friend who can use fresh eyes to do a spot check and read it over for you/see if it’s the right one?
CountC
I would submit this to Ask a Manager and see what she has to say. I am inclined to second Kontraktor – you may well have applied to the correct one, but they have so many overqualified people they decided you were more suited to the other one. Not sure if or how often this really happens, but it definitely seems possible to me.
OP here
You guise, I figured it out! Drunk girl FTW! This is a new one for me-they added a NEW position today that has the amt of experience that the position I applied for had, and downgraded the exp. level on the one I applied for last week. I feel better now!
Thanks for all the Subie wisdom- yes, I hate how big the new ones are & the outback is basically unrecognizable. Probably go with a 2007 forester… or keep my old car in case I don’t get a new job.

Bunkster
My guess is that Katie was prepared to expose some sordid details and Tom gave in.
SF Bay Associate
Speculation is that she wasn’t fighting over money (already determined in the ironclad prenup) but custody. If they went to court, she would have to say why she was fighting over custody i.e. because of whackadoo Scientology, and she’d have to explain how and why she thought it was so whackadoo. Tom & his cult really, really didn’t want Katie airing Scientology’s many items of dirty laundry in court, so he acquiesed to her custody demands to block her threat of going public.
KPG
I am shocked! I like Bunkster’s theory on the sordid details. I am a little unnaturally obsessed with reading about how Katie Holmes plotted her escape.
FP Angie
I’m thinking an ironclad, surrounded by a force field, protected by a moat with sharks (with lasers!) prenup was involved, too.
TCFKAG
I second the ironclad pre-nup theory. Only way I can imagine such a quick settlement.
Kanye East
Forget sticking originals in a vault; I want a moat of be-lasered sharks in my office. I will accept no substitutes!
Fiona
My guess is that she was already pregnant with (Chris Klein’s baby) Suri, and she insisted that custody issues be put in their fake relationship contract before she agreed to go through with it.
Hel-lo
Agreed, Fiona! It may have been threatening to expose Scientology, but it also may have been threatening to expose Tom’s homosexuality and the entire marriage as a sham.
Also, I wouldn’t be surprised for a second if they had it all worked out before they even filed.
Ada Doom Starkadder
Nothing to fight for if there were no real feelings involved. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference!
I think it’s the threat of beard-exposing that insured good behavior from Tom, rather than the Scientology expose– Paul Haggis already got that one covered.

feel like cringe-ing?

I got to 50 seconds. I’d rather watch my parents do that.
Lourine
I was very happy for Suri. Where did this name come from? Now that Tom is single again, I may give him a buzz and offer to get together.
mamabear
are you a dude, Lourine?

Through a combination of many unfortunate accidents, the sisal rug in my kitchen is looking pretty dang bad. The problem is that gunk gets stuck in between the woven threads, if you know what I mean. It’s impossible to get it out. Does anyone have any ideas? Do you think a carpet-cleaning service would be able to help? Do dry cleaners do that type of thing?
It’s a really nice rug, so I’m hoping not to have to replace it!
