NOLA
So glad you’re back! I went to classes this morning, got out, and there were no comments in my inbox! Serious withdrawal.
Eying some Ivanka Trump shoes on 6PM but shouldn’t. Found some boots that might work for half of last year’s price and ordered them. We’ll see if they fit my calves!
Sydney Bristow
I think I have a problem. It’s been a very long day without this place!
Good luck on the boots. I’ve officially given up on finding any for myself. I found a pair last year that fit but looked horrible on me.
NOLA
I got them last night. They are the same Ros Hommerson boots I ordered from WideWidths last year except that a) they were half the price; and b) they’re leather, not suede. They have a cuff at the top that can go over the knee, but I’m not interested in that, so if I keep them, I’ll take them to a cobbler and have it tacked down so it doesn’t stick out or flap. They’re tighter on my right leg then on my left. Supposed to be 17 in but barely zip over my 16 1/2 in calves. I think I’ll keep them. Still deciding! When I tried them on last night, I was just out of the shower after working out so I was way too hot for boots. I’ll put them on again when I’m more comfortable.
Niktaw
I ordered Tulip at a great price a while ago. In my opinion, it is not a wide calf boot. Certainly was not wide enough for me.

So glad we’re back! I miss you guys!

Scientists for regulatory/environmental law?
Career related TJ: I’m a recent PhD and my specialization is environmental chemistry. I am currently looking into various career options. I know alot of the ladies here are lawyers. I was wondering whether environmental law firms hire scientists in any capacity or role? I ask because I know that there are scientists hired to assist in the patent process–(someone who works in the pharmaceutical industry told me this), so is there an equivalent for those in the regulatory/environmental law field?
law
Yes – we hire tons of consultants. Look for consulting firms that do environmental remediation, hydrodynamic modeling, geochemistry etc.
SH
Also firms that do FDA/life sciences (think Agricultural, Chemical, etc.) work have scientists on staff to help with cases.
KDN
Certainly also would be very marketable as a patent agent, but you would have to take the patent bar. I wouldn’t think it would be terribly hard for someone used to being a student.
Annie
I work as an environmental consultant, and we get hired by law firms quite often for litigation/remediation/class action lawsuit type cases. A lot of people serve as expert witnesses as well. Here’s a list of the ENR Top list of environmental consulting firms. One with a practice area of litigation support might be what you’re looking for.

Wannabe Runner
My DH is also in chemistry, working in environmental science. He has worked at an environmental lab, and in state government. Your state agencies probably have tons of environmental analysis positions that require science backgrounds.
chambray blazer
I work in a very casual (jeans/tshirts) office but lusted after and bought a chambray blazer early spring… and then basically never wore it, and now its past the season I think. It either seemed too formal or I just didn’t know what to wear with it. Ideas on how to style it for future?
Anonymous
I have one and I wear it all the time in the summer. I throw it over bright colored dresses, silk shirts tucked into skinny black pants, tee shirts with black or colorful pencil skirts.
Basically any outfit that is not jeans.
Samantha
…And in unrelated news, law and professional firms across the country reported an unusual spike in their productivity levels.
;) Just kidding! Glad the site is back!
NbyNW
Too funny!
Houston Attny
At least at my firm, that’s the truth! Glad the site is back up.

Me too! I missed my ladies! I texted my husband: “C—ette is down, I have to do work!”
SV in House
Hi all. I was just laid off and find myself having to think about things that I haven’t considered for ages — new computer, resume, etc. A younger colleague laughed when I said my personal email was with Yahoo because she thought that only her mom still used Yahoo. Easy combinations of my name on gmail are not available. Any thoughts on which other service to use? I have never lost a job before and am overwhelmed by it all.
Anon
I would use your name plus a few random numbers on gmail. Good luck with your search!
Susie
I think a yahoo account is more professional than a gmail account with numbers in it.
LH
Meh, I use numbers for gmail because all logical combinations of my first name + absurdly common last (married) name were taken when I tried to get it a couple years ago. If you have a reasonably common first & last name and are trying to sign up now its hard not to use numbers. I don’t think its immature or unprofessional to have numbers in your email address. But I agree with others who said that an alumni email is the most professional thing you can use- that’s what I used for my job hunt a few years ago.
SV in house, sorry you lost your job & good luck w/ the search!
Brant
email suggestions: First_Last@, First.Last@, First.I.Last@, FLast@, FILast@, FLast##@
Sydney Bristow
These are all great suggestions. I’m so sorry you lost your job. Good luck with the search!
Gail the Goldfish
Dots in gmail addresses actually don’t matter, so if anyone has a combination of your name, adding a dot won’t help. I don’t know about underscores, though.
What about outlook email? They’ve been advertising that lately as an alternative to gmail (due to privacy concerns) and I assume most names haven’t been taken yet.
Gail the Goldfish
(I’ve never actually used outlook mail, as opposed to just office outlook, so I have no idea how it is. I just saw a commercial yesterday and thought of it)
R
You can also try LastFirst@ or LastF@ or LastFI@. Don’t give up on gmail.
Agreed with everyone else that I would judge (unfairly or not) someone with a yahoo or hotmail personal email on a resume. Also something like xfinity – are you really incapable of signing up for a free one on your own? Apple is a maybe, and colleges (or personal domains) are okay.
I say this as someone who has two gmail, one yahoo, and one hotmail. I use my FLast@gmail for all “real” correspondence and use the others for various junk mail.
Ellen
Hug’s to you. You will do OK if you keep your chin up! You should try the hotmail website, I think now called MSN.com b/c not that many peeople use it.
I think there was a probelem with this websight today. I could NOT get on and the manageing partner wanted to know why I was swareing at his PC! I told him it was b/c the key’s were all sticky. FOOEY b/c he like’s to drink coffee with SUGAR, and his sticky fingers are all over the key’s!
Mom called and told me that dad was still mad at me and will NOT be calling me until I set up a date with Sam. I told her that Sam’s nose pickeing was gross and I could NOT beleive that his car radio was full of booger’s! I said Dad did NOT have to talk to me as LONG AS HE PAID ALL OF MY BILLS. I know he like’s to talk to me b/c I have a law degree and can tell him all about my court apearance’s! He will call soon I am sure. I was in court today and the judge asked me if I wanted to meet his nephew, who is a busnessman in Queen’s. I said mabye (but I ask the HIVE why not), b/c all of the loosers I am dateing do NOT want to get married and his nephew does. He is 36 year’s old and has his OWN small busness.
The danger I see is that if it does NOT work out, the judge will get mad and I will NOT win all of my cases any more. I am worried about that. On the other hand, if it DOES work out, I can get MARRIED and get $50,000 from Grandma Leyeh! YAY!!!! I have to decide quick–is there any CONCENSUS in the HIVE about this? I will follow your advise… but HELP b/c I am goeing back into court on Thursday!!!! FOOEY!!!!
Bonnie
What’s wrong with yahoo? I don’t consider it outdated like AOL. Am I just old?
Brant
Not old, but….I don’t know. I’m in my 30s and I do still have a yahoo account…but it’s for junk mail only. I’ve been on gmail since 2005 (or whenever you still needed an “invite”)
Cimorene
Yahoo email does seem old to me. Definitely not modern or savvy. Sorry Marissa.
Hollis
LOL!
Susie
I’m 31 and work in a SV tech co, and I use yahoo. I briefly used juno when I first got email but yahoo has been my primary email forever.
Susie
I should clarify SV tech co that is not Yahoo!
Samantha
So sorry to hear about your job loss. First, its okay to have a yahoo email account (AOL, or Comcast, on the other hand…). It’s more important that your email address looks professional and has some or all of your entire name as opposed to cutiepie1992 at a gmail address.
If one of your names (first or last) can be shortened, try for a gmail address with that version, or including a middle name or initial. But you may be fine with the address you have. What your colleague did was rude, and moreover she is also wrong – a lot of younger folks have yahoo accounts as well (definitely as a secondary if not primary account).
Second, how long has it been since you got laid off? If it just happened this week, my unsolicited advice is to take a few days to sit back and take stock. It is a huge and shocking life event, don’t feel like you have to rush and get an email address or laptop or whatever. Take some time to yourself and to relax and think about your options, because this is just one small setback in a decades-long professional career.
CA lawyer
Some universities have free alumni accounts that might look good, for example @alumni.greatuniversity.edu. I wouldn’t apply to younger, trendier companies with a Yahoo email address quite yet (maybe the current CEO will make it cool again). Best wishes!
Susie
Neither my undergrad nor law school has free alumni emails. My masters program doesn’t even have email for current students.
k-padi
I’m so sorry! That sucks.
Take care of yourself first. If your severance package includes benefits, get all your medical, dental, and vision appointments scheduled. If you think you can, take a vacation. Everyone told me to do that but I was so stressed that I wouldn’t have enjoyed it. Otherwise, do what I did when I got laid off: schedule drinks with friends and lay around in pajamas for 2 weeks.
Other than that, activate your network now. Let people know that you are on the market and looking. Don’t forget us Bay Area women, either! We are part of your network too!
Susie
I got an email today from a recruiter regarding a tech transactions in house position in SF, 8-15 years experience. Not a personal connection, not sure how I got on this list or how reputable it is (Solutus Legal Search) but happy to forward if you’re interested.

I agree with those advising you to try different name combinations on gmail. Personally I use FirstInitialLast with no periods. While gmail isn’t inherently any more professional than Yahoo, the service and functionality are better imo. I’ve also heard gmail is more secure, but I’m not a techie so I could be wrong.

Thanks all, I was just laid off yesterday, so I am still reeling.

I think it’s a little silly that people would judge you for this, but I agree there are people who do.
I think whatever internet provider you have will probably give you an email account NAME@provider.com? I just got comcast xfinity and it comes with an email address. I didn’t realize this until I signed up for online bill pay and streaming tv shows…when I created the login, I noticed the account also comes with an email box. now comcast spams me every day in the box they made for me.
It will probably also be nice for you to have a separate “box” for personal and job search related emails. I wish I was able to have that during my job search.

Sorry about the job. Good luck finding a new one.
Not to pass judgment on using a yahoo mail, but I was recently hiring for an IT position, and I took note of the mail addresses used by the applicants. It didn’t influence the decision at all, but I definitely noticed. But then, I’m of a generation and in a field where it is not unusual to purchase a relevant domainname to use for mail adresses. My SO calls it snobby. And it probably is. But there it is.
I would probably go with the outlook mail suggested by others if I didn’t have a personal domain.
Coach Laura
I read a recent article (not sure where – Fortune mag perhaps) that said specificaly that Yahoo emails were the kiss of death. I’m not sure that’s true but it only takes one HR recruiter that screens for yahoo to have your resume/application end up in the trash. If gmail doesn’t work, you could set up an email with your last name as a domain name and have emails autoforwarded to your yahoo account. Try: jennifer @ rodgers dot com or michelle @ kumarhouse dot com as examples.
SV in House – hang in there. I’ve been laid off and it’s not fun but you will get through it.
EM
Zoho is free. I think the domain name is fairly innocuous, but if someone recognizes it, it’s a free suite of productivity apps, so it’s professional in nature. It also has great CRM and other features, which made aid you in networking.
Blonde Lawyer
For those of you still on hotmail you can create a free alias account on Outlook.com (the new hotmail) and use both from your new outlook account. I really like the new outlook and I think @outlook.com sounds professional. Most names are still available.
Hollis
SV in house – i’m not sure if you are still reading this, but seriously, this too will pass. I was laid off and landed at a better place and you will too. I think what would help would be to set-up coffees and lunches with everyone you can possibly think of, and just see where it goes. Also check out indeed.com. If you are getting several weeks of severance, can you ask your company to allow you to “work” for those weeks instead so you can look for a job at work? That worked well for me, even though it was somewhat painful to see my colleagues everyday (it was probably more awkward for them actually).
SoCalAtty
Just checking in – I spent last Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday morning with my grandpa, and then went to Denver to teach my classes, and did a big hike with friends on Saturday (Greys/Torreys Peak). I just talked to my Uncle who is actually doing a really good job of keeping me updated, and grandpa has almost stopped swallowing – so the nurses say it could be a matter of days. I have a ticket to get back up there Friday night, but if I don’t make it that’s ok. We talked weeks ago and there isn’t anything “unfinished” so I’m just going up to be there.
Logical me recognizes that this is ok, it is the natural progression of things, he’s 89 blah blah….but the 10 year old at the pumpkin patch inside me is throwing an aboslutely hysterial fit.

Give the 10 year old some safe space to throw the hysterical fit; your logical side will kick in when you need it. No matter how much you prepare for it coming, it’s still going to hard and that’s ok. I’m sorry.

Thanks guys, info filed Silvercurls. I did the therapy thing after my mom & grandma, so I’ve got the tools, and I know enough to not beat myself up about it too much.
It helps just knowing you all are out there and other people have been through it too.

Hi, hive! Starting my first Biglaw job in a few days and was wondering if anyone had any advice on stuff they wish they would have done differently at the beginning of their career or would advise baby sharks to keep in mind. From college and law school and earlier jobs, I can definitely think of instances where lack of research/consideration led to me being pigeonholed/committed to something that wasn’t a great fit, and I’d love to avoid that here in my big girl job.
