woman wears white and black PJs with a floral print; the PJs have a reversed print on the collar, pocket, and cuffs of the shorts so there are white flowers on a black/navy background

Which are your favorite pajamas in the summer months, readers (if there is a difference)? My son was really tickled with the matching PJs I bought around the holidays, so I'm pondering buying some of these cute short ones from Kate Spade.

I love the floral print — I think the detail where the print is reversed is clever! The PJs are getting rave reviews at Nordstrom.

The pictured PJs are $78, available in XS-XL sizes, at Nordstrom. They come in seven different prints. (If you're hunting for bigger sizes, reader favorite Moonlight PJs come in plus sizes and have matching short jams.)

Some of the other favorite PJs readers have mentioned in previous discussions are these….

  1. I always see the best travel advice here. Any thoughts on a trip to Olympia national park/Port Angeles/Victoria BC? How should we split the time if we have about 1.5 weeks total? We’d be driving up from Portland for a baby moon (I’ll be 28 weeks). We like light hiking, views, good food, and generally just relaxing. I was thinking of just picking say 2 places to stay (e.g. 3 nights in Olympic national park, 6 in Victoria) but then wasn’t sure if we should try to do a few days in Tofino or something like that.

    1. I’ve done the road trip from the Bay Area to Portland to Seattle to Victoria to Banff/Lake Louise. It was so wonderful. We did a car ferry between Seattle and Victoria, and again from Victoria to Vancouver. I’d see if you can stretch to get over to Banff. It’s one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. We took the day trip out to the Athabasca glacier & that was a great way to spend a day. It was in the middle of summer and freezing of course, but I’m so glad we went.

      1. PS I think 6 nights in Victoria is A LOT unless you decide to explore more of Vancouver Island, and even then I’m not sure you want to be based in Victoria to do that.

    2. Quick ideas around Victoria… don’t laugh but Miniature World is surprisingly good. Everyone I’ve sent there has really liked it. Also, Hatley Castle is the x-men school if that’s your thing. Highly recommend the tour as the castle is in large part a monument to passive aggressive bickering.

    3. I agree that 6 days in Victoria is too many. It’s a pretty sleepy city. Tofino is beautiful and worth the visit. Another option is the San Juan islands. You can catch a ferry in Anacortes. I visited San Juan Island, one of the larger islands, last summer and it was great for relaxing, light hiking and there were some good restaurants in town.

    4. Love that area! Highly recommend staying at Domaine Madeleine in Port Angeles. The view from our room was beyond stunning.

  2. Have been struggling with hunger after dinner despite having eaten a good dinner. Does anyone deal with this? What are some good evening snacks that will keep you full until breakfast? All that seems to work is an apple but I am getting incredibly sick of them.

    1. add peanut butter to your apple? there’s one TikToker I follow who makes a nighttime snack with greek yogurt, jello pudding, and berries. i like warm desserts at night so I’d probably go for oatmeal mixed with hot cocoa if i was physically hungry.

    2. Ice cream, berries and yogurt, cereal, cottage cheese, peanut butter crackers.

    3. I love a spoonful of peanut butter for this. Also like hard boiled eggs with some sort of fat (avocado or cheese is my preference).

      Could you eat dinner later?

    4. Depends on whether you’re at a weight you want to be at or not. If you’re trying to lose weight, are your calories too low?

I find fat satiating, as do many people, so in your shoes I’d make sure I had a good amount of healthy fat with dinner (olive oil, avocado, nuts etc) and actually skip the snack. I alllways want a snack after dinner, especially a sweet one, and for me it’s more of a habit than actual hunger, so I just had to learn not to give into it.

      1. That was my first thought. Try drinking a full glass of water or herbal tea. If you’re still hungry twenty minutes later then add more protein and healthy fat to your dinner.

Are you eating a high fiber dinner? Mild gas can feel like hunger. Peppermint tea helps de-gas your system.

    5. Yes, I just don’t eat anything. It felt like I was missing out on dessert for a couple days but now I don’t think about it.

    6. How much are you eating throughout the day? If you’re eating only a light breakfast and a small lunch, you’re likely to be hungry after dinner.

    7. After dinner snacking is my downfall, I always gain a ton of weight when I get into the habit of letting myself eat after dinner and it is SO HARD to stop. If you want some snack ideas that aren’t terrible: air popped popcorn with olive oil drizzle, carrots and hummus, I forget the brand but there’s a chocolate cup that is labeled as keto friendly. If you want to avoid snacking, drink more water or a nice smelling tea, brush your teeth, go to bed earlier.

    8. How healthy is the rest of your eating during the day and are you have any medical issues? I thought I was late-night binging because of stress or aging or something, but I worked with a dietician and she pointed out that frequent diarrhea following colon surgery a year or so ago was preventing me from absorbing the nutrients I needed and I was also low on protein in my diet. Resetting gut health flora and switching up diet stopped the diarrhea and instantly curbed the pre-bed cravings for all things salty (chips, cheese, etc.) I literally have no evening cravings anymore. It’s like a light switch was flipped off.

  3. How can you tell if the area you live in is LCOL or HCOL? Are these defined anywhere? My Google search is failing me

    1. I don’t think there are formal definitions. I sort of think of LCOL as being places where you can buy a decent single family home for under $500k, medium to HCOL is $500k-$1M and very HCOL above $1M.

      1. I agree this is a good general guide. However, to the OP, it is so hard to flat out give parameters because of the nuances. For me, by this guide I’d be in a LCOL area, however, our property taxes are astronomical, so in reality I’d say we are in a MCOL area. To put it in perspective, the taxes on my basic 1400 sq ft house are more expensive than a $1mm lake house in the state my parents live.

  4. Do you have certain behavior or struggles that clue you in to the fact that you need something in particular? For example, I know in the fall I am going to struggle with tasks like planning/making dinner and I’m also going to start drinking a ton more – so I have a reminder in my phone that that behavior probably means I need to use my happy light.

(With my kids, if my 9yo is being unreasonable and shouty then 90% of the time he is hangry.)

Or like that meme where if you hate everybody go to bed, if you think everybody hates you eat something, and (third thing i can’t remember).

      1. I didn’t know that meme, thank you! Although for me, it’s if I hate everybody, eat something. When you look up hangry in the dictionary, they have my picture.

      2. Haha. I usually say that if I hate myself/everyone, then it’s bedtime! (For me this usually happens in the evening.)

    1. If I’m craving juice or sugar then I’m dehydrated. If I’m emotional and catastrophizing then I need better quality sleep.

      1. If I’m feeling off (or tired or just like it’s Hard to Do Everything) then it’s usually my Vitamin D.

  5. I bought myself a several Soma pajama shorts sets from Poshmark recently and it highly recommend. I feel much cuter in the evenings.

  6. Can someone explain teeth grills to me? What is the purpose? What are the hygiene considerations? TIA.

    1. Are you considering getting a grill, or do you just want to look down on people who have them?

They’re like earrings. No one needs them. Some people think they’re nice looking.

    2. If there are no hygiene considerations for invisalign, I don’t see why there would be with teeth grills?

      1. Not criticizing grills (which I am wholly unqualified to discuss), but Invisalign definitely has hygiene issues. My sister had Invisalign and was obsessed with keeping her teeth clean to avoid staining. That said, it did the job for her.

    3. I did a quick google, since I’d not heard of this thing at all. Baffling style choice to me, but so are chunky loafers and nap dresses, so to each their own. The dentistry pages I saw pointed out serious issues with bacterial growth, misaligned teeth and trouble biting.

    4. How have so many of you never heard of these before?? If you didn’t live through the 1980s, presumably you lived through the 2000s?

      1. A lot of people are “narrow” in the media they consume and style trends they follow. Just saying

  7. Reporting back on Sezane tops. Thought I’d try Sezane after seeing it on Extra Petite and wanting to try it since petite options are so limited. Total wipe out. I’m small framed (0P for BR and AT), but larger bust and my shoulders aren’t narrow. But it was really cut for someone much larger than me. Shoulders and upper sleeves were too prominent and the neckline way too low. I do typically stick with petite sized clothes and will go back to it. Not petite friendly. I look like a kid wearing her mom’s clothes.

    1. Thanks for the update! I used to follow Jean’s blog closely and have learned so much from her about petite fit and tailoring. Disappointing to catch up on her Sezane reviews and see a ton of tops and dresses that just don’t fit her well. She seems to be really trying to make it work, a ton of ” not terribly long”, “a little loose”, “chest is roomy but..” descriptions. Makes me wonder if she gets a commission or if she really wants to find new petite friendly brands? Not ragging on Jean. But like girl you taught me to recognize good fit!

  8. low stakes question, but does anyone have a good method for keeping a number of tissues in your car that doesn’t involve giving up one of your cupholders with a circular tissue box? i feel like Kleenex used to make puffy full-size tissue containers but can’t find them anywhere.

    1. They discontinued the puffy car packs. Purse packs are the best substitute I can find.

    2. I am glamorous and just keep a full size box on my passenger seat. And yes I am turning into my parents.

  9. Where would you shop for a dress for your own 40th birthday cocktail party. Size 18, I wear a lot of nap dresses but specifically want sexy and not something a toddler could also wear for this occasion, $300 or less, don’t want to rent.

      1. The dress in the first link in the blue colorway is amazing. I would buy it in a heartbeat if I had anywhere to wear it.

      1. Yikes…. it looks like she is wearing a bathing suit bikini top! A little risky depending on your skin tone.

  10. Has anyone been to Rio recently? I’ve heard it’s the Paris of the South…

    1. Where did you hear that? Was the person on drugs? It absolutely is not. Absurd. Maybe BA deserves that title.

    2. I was scared off by the state department warnings on crime although it’ s probably safer than philly right now.

    3. I am Brazilian and went to Rio in February. I loved it, but it is no Paris, not even close. The historical part in Rio is great, but the beaches in the Northeast (Jericoacoara etc.) are much better, less polluted.

        1. Sadly, no, because it is super expensive for Brazilians (it is not that expensive for Americans and Europeans). But a work colleague went and loved it. I would love to go one day, it is so beautiful!

  11. Bay Area ladies – Do you know anyone who has used the CalHFA grant program for Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) construction? It’s a grant that will give you $40K to spend on specific ADU-related items. We’re already under contract on a modular, financing everything ourselves, and this would certainly help with permit fees etc. We are considering applying but the terms of the contract seem muddy. I would love to get a perspective from someone who’s looked at this and what you ultimately decided to do and if the program worked as you expected. Thank you! Links below.

    1. I can’t help, unfortunately, but I have some relatives that have built one, so I will ask them about it. They put one in their yard, and in one case it is for their elderly parents, and in the other, for their post-college kids still establishing themselves. These things are truly a miracle for providing affordable housing for extended families, if you are lucky enough to have the land to make it work. One relative who already built one, may build a 2nd one for the other side of the family’s elderly father. These wonderfully accessible homes are more spacious that I expected, handicapped accessible, and so thoughtfully designed, and amazingly affordable for what they are. Honestly, as a single person, I would love to have such a mini “house”.

      Good luck with your project!

    2. The LA Times did a multi-part series on ADUs and new developments around them within the past month. The series is called “you do ADU”. Part 2 is specifically on financing: https://www.latimes.com/business/real-estate/newsletter/2023-04-05/how-to-finance-and-pay-for-adu-you-do-adu . Excerpt from that article bbelow.

If you need help figuring out your options, there are multiple places to turn. A good starting point is the website of a nonprofit housing advocacy group such as the Casita Coalition, which offers a comprehensive guide to ADU financing. There are also counselors certified by the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development and groups like Long Beach-based HPP Cares that offer advice on how to pay for an ADU.

  12. elderly father of a mom friend (you know a woman who I now consider a friend but whom the connection is our kids were friends) and I plan to go to the funeral service. Do non family members/ not very close friends go to cemetery after?

    1. They’ll probably tell you at the service, but if there’s a separate graveside, that’s usually just family, in my experience.

    2. This varies, but non-family and people who aren’t very close to the family don’t feel compelled to go to the cemetery in my area (I’m in the south). Sometimes they will come, and that is nice, but everyone understands if they’re not there because it’s a bit of a more intimate ceremony.

      1. This is my experience as well. It’s not expected from those who are not family or close friends, but viewed as a kindness regardless.

  13. I was scared off by the state department warnings on crime although it’ s probably safer than philly right now.

  14. Whyyyy do the streaming services make it so hard to figure out when/where you signed up? Have a Hulu sub but no idea where I’m paying for it or what email it’s linked to. Have a Peacock sub I should probably cancel but haven’t seen any of those bills either. I feel like they’re hiding somewhere on my Amazon account maybe?

    1. I have never heard of this being a problem. All the streaming services I subscribe to a very visible on my credit card bills.

      1. Agreed. The only one that’s a little weird for me is Hulu, because I got that as an add-on with my Spotify Premium membership.

      2. Yes, exactly. I do get some channels through Amazon when they have good deals, but they’re right there under Amazon channels, very easy to manage. And you definitely can’t get Peacock or Hulu from Amazon. If you can’t figure out the email or credit card you signed up under, you have too many!

      3. The problem is you can subscribe in many areas. iTunes via your phone, Amazon, etc. and the charges can show up under the parent company you subscribed with.

    2. If you have Xfinity, you might have Peacock as a free add-on. I canceled Xfinity when I moved and still am getting Peacock. I don’t know how often they check to see if the Xfinity account is still active.

    3. Peacock is free if you have certain cable services (including Xfinity) so maybe you aren’t paying for it? Hulu is also free through my phone plan.

    4. POssibly through your phone plan? I know some Verizon plans come with Hulu/Disney+

  15. Two questions:

    1) Has anyone been to Morocco? We’re considering a trip with our tweenage children in December. Would love thoughts.
    2) I am looking for shorts that fit a small waist and large hips/thighs. Probably size 16. I feel like there are a ton of options for jeans for a pronounced curve, but I’m not seeing much for shorts.

    1. Columbia makes shorts that comfortably fit my curvy size 14 pear body. I’ve had good luck with their Performance Fishing Gear line (they just look like athletic shorts) as well as their hiking shorts. Eddie Bauer hiking shorts fit me nicely, too. Vanity sizing has me in a 12 or L in both brands, although I’m firmly in a 14/33 in most other brands.

    2. 1) I’ve been twice and I love it. First time in the north at Easter visiting Tetouan and Chefchaouen doing a bit of hiking in the Riff area. Chefchaouen is super beautiful and I remember eating the best “pastela” of my life. The second time at New Year’s I went from Marrakech to Ouarzate to spend a few days in the desert (incredible to wake up on New Year’s Day in the middle of the desert) and from there to the Atlas to climb a Jebel to end up in Esaouira (super pretty coastal town).
The first time I was in a large group and the second time in a small one, mostly women (but one man). We had our guide and our driver and zero problems. Only be carefull choosing the accomodation.
      2) I assume you are not asking about wearing shorts in Morocco. Don’t, the people were nice, but showing a little of skin might mean at the very least getting a marriage proposal.

    3. Universal Standard has always been great for my pronounced curves, and they have shorts now!
