I would not call myself an athlete by any stretch of the imagination (and “be strong” is a constant goal in progress, with lots of room for improvement), but I do try to exercise pretty often. I would have said that I vastly prefer home exercise/exercise for convenience, and so in the past this has mostly meant walking, running (C25K!), and a long while ago, exercise DVDs — all stuff I would have thought was inexpensive/sunk costs kind of stuff. (In terms of what exercise I do — as I get older I find I need cardio to keep the crazies away, strength training to actually lose weight, and I'm just recently starting to get into yoga for self-care/relaxation/stretching for my tight hips, particularly after so many readers recommended yoga as their “mental quiet time” when we discussed just that a few weeks ago.) {related: how to fit lunch workouts into your workday} Anyway: I was a bit surprised to realize that I actually spend a fair amount on fitness currently! I keep starting and stopping membership things like Faster Way to Fat Loss and Street Parking, and streaming fitness options like Beachbody, Gaia, Booya, and more. Just today I paid for a yearly subscription to DownDog, and I'm on month two of Les Mills On Demand. (Lots of these have been recommended by readers; huge thanks!) I don't have an active gym membership at the moment, but I'll occasionally hit a class with a friend, or if I see a Groupon-type sale on a local gym I'll try it out to see if it's convenient enough to make it part of my regular routine. I even have a “wishlist” of things to try next that I've heard great things about, including subscriptions to BBG, Aaptiv, and maybe a workout program or two from Fitness Blender. For equipment I've written before about my favorite home weights, and for exercise clothes I tend to buy a lot of stuff from Zella and Old Navy. {related: what are your health and fitness routines?} So I'm curious — how much do you spend on fitness, from gym memberships to home exercise equipment to workout digs? For those of you who need carrots to help you work out, do you occasionally splurge on fitness items to coerce yourself into exercising regularly? What has been the best money you've spent — and what has been the worst? Psst: Looking for great workout shorts? I spend $80 a month for a 9 Round membership. I absolutely love the workouts and usually get 3-4 a week in( (30 minutes, HIIT workouts). I also walk and do a bit of yoga on my own. My son takes karate at $150 a month unlimited classes. My husband works out for free with a local group of guys who have formed a bootcamp style fitness group. Most of my workout wear comes from Old Navy, with the exception of sneakers which are replaced every 6 months or so.
I spend $100 a week on private Pilates or Gyrotonic sessions and $39 a month for my Peloton membership. I bought the bike over 2 years ago and am close to 400 rides. They have a lot of other great content too. My office has a gym that is free once you pay a $30 initiation fee. I used to also pay a trainer $100 per session, but I stopped that a few months ago.
I spend around $350 a month on fitness, sometimes more depending on new products or programs that have come out that month. Most of this expense is for my gym membership, but I find the extra money to be worth it as it leads to better equipment, facility and staff. I also have a Crossfit membership that I use on occasion (less these days, I may be cutting this one) and I pay monthly for access to a swimming pool. All of this is easily worth it in my eyes as it keeps my happy and healthy!
I run with my dog on T & R (free); hike on Sa & Su (free); and practice hot yoga on M, W, F, Sa, & Su ($169/month). I am slowly upgrading my workout wardrobe and allowing myself to purchase 1 item (running shoes, top/bottom, yoga mat) each month ($100-$200/month). I also go on a surf or yoga retreat every year for NYE ($2,000). I would love to be able to horseback ride and play tennis and golf again, but it’s just not in the budget right now in my HCOL area.
I spend about $40 a month for unlimited classes at my local park district in a major metropolitan area (so that is very inexpensive). Check out your local park district, parks and rec, etc. I feel like ppl just automatically default to a gym and don’t think of this option, when they frequently have great classes for a great price.
There’s a gym at my work for $10/month which I use during winter or on rainy days, but otherwise I workout by walking/running in my neighborhood, which is free.
3-4 pairs of shoes per year at around $100/each.
My FitBit was a Christmas gift.
And I wear cheap workout clothing – tanks from Old Navy and capris/shorts from ODODOS on Amazon. I love Zella leggings but I’ve found them on Poshmark for $25-30.
$99/mo for my local Y (which has childcare!)
$22/mo for my MTRNL yoga memership, which I have been horrible at actually using.
I used to spend about $150/mo on crossfit, but now that i have this baby I just go to the Y.
