Jackets may be the last thing you're thinking about right now, but this cute tasseled one from Club Monaco is too different and interesting not to post — and it's a linen blend, so it would work for colder days and evenings. I like the relaxed fit and the tassels, which are kind of a cute look, so do consider this if you're a summer jacket kind of person. It comes in XS-L and is $379. To Go Or Not To Go?
Asked earlier but realized it might not have been the right place to post, so am posting again…
A loved one completed a Master’s degree at WGU (fully online and he says fully accredited, I haven’t done any personal research). Apparently he graduates in July, they mail his diploma, and he is allowed to go to a regional graduation ceremony in another state in the fall. He’s asked some of us if we wanted to go. We’re not really sure what to make of the whole thing… should we treat it like he graduated from a brick and mortar school or is this like a joke school and we should talk him out of spending the money to buy a cap and gown and travel? Is this a real thing someone puts on a resume and people hire based on or is this like tr*mp university and my loved one just got snowed?
Help!
Anonymous
Some people look down on online degrees, but plenty of people do them and put them on resumes. WGU is definitely not Trump U.

I posted before but it was caught in moderation.
A very quick Google search indicates it’s legit. That would help you make your decision.

Your loved one is proud of his accomplishment. Stop being snobby and go support him.

Absolutely go and support him and stop being so judgmental. If you thought this university wasn’t legit, you should have expressed that when he was deciding to attend, or even once he started attending, rather than diminishing his accomplishment now.
anon
You don’t have to go, but definitely don’t try to convince him not to spend the money.
anon
This. It’s clearly important to him. Go. Or don’t go if you don’t want to spend the money but don’t talk him out of it. I can’t imagine how hurtful it would be if someone tried to talk me out of celebrating my completion of a degree because it was a joke, or stupid—-*after I had completed it.*
He did this for a reason. Whether it was because he thought it would help him or it was the best option available to him at the time. Respect that.
Anon
Not to snark, but a very quick Google search indicates it’s accredited/real. Perhaps a bit of research on your end?
Anonymous
Would you go if it was at a traditional university? Honestly I wouldn’t, so I wouldn’t go to this either. Realistically I would only go to my significant other’s. I skipping my siblings’ graduations.

Recommendations for affordable non-work tops that allow coverage for br@straps (showing cle@vage is okay) that hide a tummy but won’t make a wearer look pregnant? Everything I find either wears like a tent or looks maternity!

Me too. These tops are lifesaving & my go-to’s – I size up for a casual look & normally for under suits: http://shop.nordstrom.com/s/pleione-faux-wrap-blouse-regular-petite/3507544

Those tassels would drive me crazy. I imagine they would very easily get snagged, caught on the seat of my car, caught in a door, etc. and I would shortly be missing tassels. Don’t even get me started on the many ways I could find to snag the arm ones. I am not coordinated enough for this jacket.
Anon
Same! I think it’s pretty, but I would lose tassels immediately.

shoes?
seeking shoes that are as close to effortless as possible but look nicer than flip flops. Something to throw on with jeans and a t that makes me look like an adult rather than a college kid but don’t look overly dressed when paired with jeans and a t or would be tough to walk in. do these exist?
Triangle Pose
Rothy’s The Point – knit, flats, work for wide or slim feet because they have give, washable. I have them in Orchid and bright red.
Anonymous
Yep this. I’ve worn mine every day since I got them. Work with dresses and jeans.
Two Cents
So I just bought the Rothy’s Point and really like it, but then realized that the insole is not machine washable (only the outer shoe). But the insole is of course the ones that is starting to smell. Has anyone had luck hand washing the insole?
Triangle Pose
I just threw mine in the wash together with the flats in a lingerie bag. They are fine. Air dry obvs. If you are really careful I suppose you could soak them in oxi-clean and then air dry them but that was too much work for me.
Sarabeth
In case you are still reading – I also wash my insole. It’s been fine.
BB
I just got these too. I’m kind of torn on them. They look nice, definitely have give. There’s NO support from the insole. Also, the give is making it so that my foot is sliding forward ever so slightly when I walk and my big toe is bumping up against the top. It’s kind of painful. I don’t think it’s too small of a size because it feels fine when I’m just standing there. It’s really the movement that’s the problem. They do look really nice though.
Triangle Pose
Yeah, I should had included that. I don’t need or want a lot of support in the insole. OP wants something more polished than than flip flops which also have no support. I see people paise Vionic flats all the time for their support and I just find most of their styles to be kind of matronly and I hate the thick arch support, it makes the shoes feel block-y, like I’m dragging around extra weight for nothing. I guess everyone’s feel are different.
Triangle Pose

Anon
Do you think you could put your own insole (with more support) into the Rothy?
BB
I am wavering on the using my own insole path…maybe? The shoes are very “shallow” in height though, so you can only get away with so much. Also, you might have to order a larger size to accommodate and then the proportions might be too thrown off.
Triangle Pose
Yes, I think you could put your old insole inside Rothy’s just take out their insoles. They stretch so I don’t think the shallowness is that limiting unless you’re going way thicker than the insoles I see from Dr. Scholl’s etc.

Maybe something like these slip on converse. They have an elastic back so you never tie the shoe laces they just slip on.

making older friends
Where does a 30something woman go to make older friends? Have had wonderful friendships with women twice my age in previous cities and am trying to find such connections in a new place. Wanting to meet women who are active and to socialize with, whether at their home relaxing or to go to see a show with or something, not looking for becoming a volunteer caregiver or something of that capacity.

Depends on where you live. I’m in a small Great Plains City and didn’t have any luck with Meetup. I’m not interested in YA novels, Christian romances or cat mysteries, and the two New to our City groups turned out to be a place to meet 40-something singles. *sigh*

friend tree
Friends of friends, which isn’t super-helpful in a new location. But it’s how I got my (IMHO awesome) group right now – I went to law school with one, and all the other people have branched off from there, including one that I work with (same location, but not group) and see more often than the original friend who made the introduction.
So, see if your friends are willing to cross-pollinate their friend groups. Or, if you are new to location, see if your network (facebook, family) have any blind friend-dates they can set you up on.

Depends on if you are religious. But some of my closest oldest friends are people I met at our synagogue. They say places of worship are one of the last truly intergenerational meeting spots.

Check out your local library for their programs and meetups. Mine has some adult book clubs, seminars, and events and I’ve found them to be fairly intergenerational. One of my best friends is 10 years older and we met at a random library demonstration from the local astronomy club. (Which I’m not interested in, but wanted to look at Saturn’s rings at least once in my life.)

Hi!
I actually live in Moscow and it’s such a great place. If you are here in summer – so over the next few months – spend time around Patriach Ponds. There are heaps of good restaurants there – I particularly like Uilliams. If you are looking for an experience and have the $$, try White Rabbit. It has spectular views over Moscow. I also really like 1862 Visota.
Have fun!
speed of completion question
When accomplishing a task much quicker than standard, do you share that? For example, if it took 2 years to earn your bachelor’s degree rather than the standard 4, would you share that or would that make it look like you must have gone to a cracker jack school? If something is known for taking a specific amount of time and you can do it significantly quicker, does sharing that indicate you are awesome or does it imply that the thing really wasn’t that tough in the first place?
C
I think it depends somewhat on your accomplishments while you were there. If, for example, you were able to complete a four-year degree in half the time while maintaining a stellar GPA, completing relevant internships, and participating in valuable professional organizations, I’d emphasize those accomplishments as a way of further highlighting your overall achievement of having completed your degree very quickly. However, if you completed a four-year degree in two years by doing the bare minimum in coursework, squeaking by on a passable GPA, and ignoring opportunities to gain professional skills and experience, I don’t think your speed alone is impressive enough to mention.
blueberries
I graduated in 3 years from a top school and I don’t mention it (I’m now 10 years out–maybe I mentioned it the first few years?). I don’t think it’s that impressive; I could have spent 4 years in an awesome place, but instead spent 3 and that fourth year as a 1L somewhere less pleasant.
Anonymous
It seems here that it implies you think you’re better than those who did it in four years. Most of the people you are talking to did it in four years, so I would be careful about being condescending.
anon
If a person is able to accomplish something unusual, why is it bragging for this to be shared? Shouldn’t people be able to accomplish huge goals and talk about them without being accused of bragging or looking down on someone else?
Anonymous
I think it may be a question of whether or not it is a huge goal — is finishing college in half the time something to strive for? Is there something to be said for completing it in four years and having a traditional experience? What’s the context? If it’s in a job interview, I think you may risk making yourself seem unlikable.
Anonymous
Exactly– they DID something unusual, but they didn’t necessarily “accomplish” something. And the attempt to make it sound like a big goal makes it sound like everyone should have tried that, and it risks rubbing people the wrong way.
It’s not the same as diminishing an accomplishment like a law degree or running a marathon, which are universally recognized as difficult achievements. Graduating college in two years is not widely recognized as a goal, and some people wanted to spend four years immersed in that unique and temporary culture and will not understand– you risk making them feel like they shouldn’t have done that.
Anonymous
Plus even if they don’t feel bad, they may think that you’re socially stunted for having accelerated it. Not that you are, but I’ve definitely faced that assumption.
Anon
What’s your purpose? For a resume or something? I don’t think it will be all that impressive. In fact, I think AAM has answered questions about this exact scenario before. It’s probably something employers aren’t going to care too much about.
Mpls
And wouldn’t it be self-evident from your graduation dates? Unless there’s some extra-special or extra-ordinary reason (super efficient, came in with AP grades/PSEO), I don’t know that it’s really a talking point, and I would say it’s only really a talking point for your first job or two after graduation. After that…does it really matter?
Include it.
This employer would be interested! We get so.many.applicants. (hundreds?) from ivy and quasi-ivy league schools for a single job posting at our well-known financial/i-banking firm.
It makes you stand out, implies you have your $hit together, and says you’re driven (all that assuming your GPA is respectable, too). Make it a bullet, maybe the last one, under the degree/degree description on your resume.
Anonymous
I think it largely depends on the type of job you are seeking, because I want to see someone who used college to get involved in leadership opportunities on campus, student organizations, etc., and I can’t see that growth and development in someone who was only there for two years. But I am looking for someone with people skills and personal interactions in addition to academic qualifications, and some employers may not find that important.
Jo March
+1 to it depending on the type of job
One of my friends completed her undergrad in 3 years for financial reasons and has framed it as having the determination and drive to do what she needed to do and being able to make difficult decisions/prioritize effectively.
SC
I think you can address in a cover letter or interview (whichever is more appropriate, based on the answers) why you were driven to graduate in 2 years and the valuable experience you gained by entering the work force earlier or whatever you did next. That could help boost an impression that you’re motivated and have your sh*t together and reassure someone who’s worried you weren’t more involved in campus life.
Anonymous
Eh, I know a lot of people who could have graduated earlier but ended up sticking around for further research/education opportunities, etc. I don’t think it means much.
SW
I finished my bachelor’s in three years. I have mentioned it depending on the circumstances, along with the fact that I was younger than average when I started college, but only in an attempt to offset the fact that my grades were terrible.
nutella
Only in professional circumstances. I finished undergrad in three years and worked fulltime my senior year so I will mention it in a job interview because it is an extra year of work experience I had that you wouldn’t quite understand if you read my graduation date – I wasn’t allowed to ‘walk’ at graduation with the previous class, so my graduation date was somewhere in the middle of the two classes and then I ‘walked’ with my class year. Other than that, I don’t really bring it up socially unless someone asks about something Senior year that I missed because I was working fulltime in another city.
Pen and Pencil
I graduated in three years (and for all the nay-sayers I had an excellent GPA. more internships than anyone else I knew, etc etc). I did not mention it on my resume. It isn’t that important, and in the first couple of interviews after college it came out naturally in interviews when asked about my college experience/how I got my first job. Honestly, I actively avoided talking about it because it is hard to talk about it without coming off like I am bragging, and in a world when a lot of people and a lot of people’s kids aren’t finishing college in the usual 4 years, I didn’t want to risk putting anyone off.
Graduating early wasn’t what was impressive about my college years. The internships, club leadership positions, and the GPA IN ADDITION to the fact that I was taking 18-21 hours most semesters is what is impressive. So If they asked me what one of my strong attributes is, I could say thriving under pressure from multiple projects and give that as an example, but I wouldn’t highlight it on it’s own.
Yes, this
I agree with this. I took 4 years to graduate instead of 3 but completed 3 distinct majors in those 4 years. My GPA was 3.94. I’ve never highlighted this but yes to thriving under pressure, time management, etc.

UK ladies: what should we get friends for a wedding gift? They live in London (not sure where). Ottolenghi or River Cafe gift card? Something else?
LondonLeisureYear
That sounds great to me! If you want other restaurant ideas I could give them but those are solid.
Depending on how much you want to gift – someone gave us for a wedding gift a nights stay at a hotel for a in the Cotswolds which we really enjoyed.
Anonymous
I have no experience with London specifically, but I think a restaurant card is much safer than a hotel gift card. Even if the restaurant isn’t a favorite, I’ll try any place once and if it’s well-regarded I’m unlikely to hate it. But a getaway – even one that’s solely on the weekend – can be really tough to schedule and I’m not sure I’d want to use precious time except at a hotel and destination of my choosing.
MJO
I’m older, and I’ve made younger friends both through a triathlon training group and through church. And thank you for realizing that it can be kind of fun to befriend people of different ages.

This obviously was supposed to be a response to “making older friends”. Guess the fact that I screwed it up is not a good advertisement for making older friends….
Emergency Prep?
I know this has been talked about before here, but I’m wondering if recent events have changed anyone’s perspective. How much emergency planning to you do? And what emergencies do you prepare for?
I live in an area with hurricanes, so a lot of my disaster preparedness is focused on sheltering comfortably in place for a couple of days. And, since I often wear heels, I keep sneakers in my office and my car in case I have to evacuate on foot because of severe weather, a mass shooting, etc.
SC
I live in an area with hurricanes, and we do some preparation for sheltering in place and evacuating. In June and July, before the major storms are likely to hit, we:
– make sure we know where utility shut-offs are
– find flashlights and replace batteries
– group flashlights, batteries, candles, and matches in one place (and restock if necessary)
– buy a case of water
– make sure the fire extinguisher is charged and accessible
– hire someone to cut back trees and clean gutters
– write down a quick packing list
– put important paperwork in a waterproof, portable safe
– buy some canned food (but not enough for 3-7 days–we would buy more if a storm were on its way)
In August and September, we keep the cars at least half-full with gas, keep some cash on hand, and make sure prescriptions are filled.
Marshmallow
We had a previous horrific experience in a natural disaster so I think about this a lot. We live in a high rise now, though, so we don’t have a lot of prep to do to our actual living space. I keep lots of candles and matches around and always have a case or two of water. I also recently bought a hand-crank radio/phone charger. I genuinely like canned soup so we always have a lot of cans around but if there is a storm in the forecast I buy extra canned goods and snacks. Oh, and we keep our cat carriers easily accessible so that if we ever need to evacuate in a fire or gas leak (it has happened) we can quickly grab the carriers, stuff the kitties in, and get out fast.
