We've mentioned this tote before, but it's worth featuring again today because it's a lightweight summer classic! This bag — which comes in three sizes — also gives you the perfect way to look put-together on your commute. It's available in this bright shade of pink but also a more sedate black, grey, and brown, in addition to purple and navy. We're picturing the large, but medium and small versions are also available. They're $185-$245 at Nordstrom. Longchamp ‘Le Pliage Neo' Tote For a lower-priced option, check out these nylon totes from Lipault Paris at Zappos — several colors, one print, and two sizes, and they're $75-$85. Is it better to steam or iron silk?
Anon
Steam
Anonymous
If you press it, make sure you use the silk setting (a cooler setting) and/or a pressing cloth.
If you care. I mostly just do the shirt inside out with the setting just high enough to get steam.
But the steam works pretty great too.
Anon
Be careful with steam, I have gotten waterspots on silk with my steamer.
Ow, my most of me!
I worked out for the first time today in over 2 years. I charged right into it with one of those intense barre method classes. I can already tell that I will probably not be able to move, walk, or lift anything tomorrow. Is there anything I can do now, or am I just doomed? We stretched at the end of the class, but somehow I’m not thinking it’s going to do a whole lot.
Anonymous
Have a bath with epsom salts, apply heat or ice as applicable to your worst spots, Advil. Gentle stretching tomorrow when you’re in pain.
Meg Murry
+1 to ibuprofen with dinner tonight and breakfast tomorrow (and continue to take it with meals as often as the bottle allows)
try to do some gentle stretching again before bed, and plan to require some serious stretching tomorrow before you get out of bed (don’t be surprised if you almost fall on your face when you try to stand up from the bed). But the good news is you’ll probably sleep like a rock! Whenever I work out during the day after a long hiatus, I fall asleep so much easier – too bad I can’t seem to make myself keep it up.
Plan your outfit for tomorrow around comfortable supportive shoes, and consider wearing something loose fitting in case you need to stretch more in the privacy of your office or a single occupant bathroom.
Emmer
Foam roller. It will hurt while you do it, but in an oh-so-satisfying way.
JJ
Foam rollers are the devil. And amazing.
Also, I find that when I’m the most sore, a long walk at a leisurely pace helps a ton.
heddie
Foam roller and a walk with help with the lactic acid buildup, do both!
Blonde Lawyer
If you are into supplements, BCAA. It comes in powder or pill form. I think it is sold at GNC and a lot of health food stores.
Catlady
Agree with this, plus fish oil and a tonnnn of water.
Anonymous
I find a laid back workout like barre or yoga is my “I’m sore” workout, but I’m more of the crossfit/running type, so maybe a gentle walk will help you.
Anon
+1 yoga and barre are my light workouts. The days where I’m sore and tired but feel like I should do something I do those.
Anonymama
These are hilarious responses. I’m sure they’re true but in context they are so shady! Like, I can only picture the mean antagonist character from a teen sports movie saying this to the poor nebbish newbie.
Ow, my most of me!
Hah, seriously! I was just asking how to prevent muscle soreness, not expecting multiple comments telling me how pathetic and weak I am. Though, lets be real, I am pretty weak. And hey, I learned a new word “nebbish”.
Thank you to the person who recommended the Epsom salt bath. I did that and feel mostly fine today. :)
Anon
If it makes you feel any better, I doubt these women are doing the exercises correctly. Maybe they got a bad instructor and had poor form.
Anonymous
You don’t go to the right barre if it’s your laid-back workout.
Anonymous
nor the right yoga…
Anonymous
+1 barre and yoga sessions vary typically from studio to studio. I’ve been to some that were very tough. I find some of these responses to be patronizing.
Anonymous
I mean, I read this and think, “gosh it’s good you didn’t get a real workout!” – I like yoga, not so much barre but I have gone, and while I gave barre my best shot it is just not. that. challenging. Yoga can be challenging, but I have only been sore from it on the rare occassion…
Anonymous
Go for a walk tonight. In my experience, it helps your body flush out the lactic acid faster if you keep up light movement than if you collapse into a heap on the couch, which is always what I *want* to do.
Congrats on kicking butt at your workout!

Water, stretching, warm bath
Not That Anne, The Other Anne
I agree with everyone about the stretching and walking and relaxing. And it may not be just tomorrow that your everything hurts, so even if you feel awesome tomorrow, don’t forget to keep working on stretching and walking. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness always hits me the second day after a really significant workout.

I love my Longchamp and it’s still going strong after years, but after a few months of wear the corners were totally busted. I’ll never spend that much on a nylon bag ever again.
Bonnie
Longchamp will repair the corners for free.
searching for bags....
I’ve always disliked these bags.
If you’re in college, and Daddy’s paying…. this is the kind of bag you carry.
Just not a great, adult bag, with really poor structure of course.
Anonymous
I had this bag in law school and it was perfect because my laptop and casebooks gave it structure. I paid for it myself (the girls who had Daddy paying weren’t wasting their time on a $150 tote).
I still use it as day tote when I travel because it takes up no space in my suitcase (I prefer to bring a larger structured bag as my “personal item” but that’s too much to carry around everywhere once I check into the hotel), its lightweight when I’m sightseeing all day, and it will hold a water bottle and umbrella with room to throw in any small purchases.
All that is to say, I think the blanket judgment against them is a little silly because they do have uses other than for the privileged undergrad set (who again, would actually consider this beneath them). But agree that it’s not a work bag either, and especially not the solid hot pink.
Bonnie
+1. I have several Longchamp bags that I bought myself. I have much nicer bags but frequently reach for a Longchamp, esp. a crossbody, because they’re incredibly lightweight yet durable. I already use a purse organizer so I can switch bags so the lack of structure is not an issue.
Anon
+1. I’ve only bought them in Paris (where they are cheaper), but they are great for the foldability alone (I walk to work, so I can throw stuff in there in the morning but fold it up and shove in my backpack if I have to consolidate. Maybe not the best “work” bag, but it is a workhorse, at least for me.

Does anyone want to do some vicarious shopping for me? I need some new tops and ideally want to pay $40 or less per top.
My “uniform” is skirt, top, and cardigan so short sleeve, cap sleeves, or sleeveless is fine. I don’t really like those flutter sleeves.
I need a size 18 or 20 (XXL) and my chest doesn’t like tops with buttons. I just ordered a ton of options from Boden. Thanks!

Have you checked out Nordstrom Rack? Here are a couple that I like, in either XL (18) or XXL (20)

Posting from my phone, so not easily able to post links, but you may want to check Macys. I recently got some printed sleeveless tops from Kasper and Nine West.
anonymous
just got a shirt called the Drapey Hi-Lo Top from Loft. Comes in a XXL and is flowy, so that might work. I completely love it, it’s the perfect summer shirt.
Lishan
Front Room might work if you’re busty enough that you’re having problems with tops with buttons! They go up to size XL, but specifically say:
“Someone wearing size 18 to 20 with big boobs may be able to size down and wear our XL, especially straight and hourglass shapes.”
Their short-sleeved shirts and sleeveless shirts are currently on sale for between $35 and $58, with most of them under $50. If that sounds like it might work for you, but you’re worried about fit, I’d recommend dropping them an email to ask about sizing. FWIW, I wear a Small in the wine knot front top and a Medium in the silk v-neck shell, and I’d say right now I’m probably about a size 12. I’ve never worn a Small in anything in my life.

Sorry I got back to this so late. Thanks for the suggestions! I had no idea Loft went to XXL now. Checking all these out.
ORD
So I ordered these pants and they are tight around the ankle. http://www.brooksbrothers.com/Petite-Lucia-Fit-Wool-Trousers/PT00054,default,pd.html
I’m used to wider trousers and not sure about these. They’re kind of early-90s, kind of skinny. Maybe I could hem them to ankle length and wear them with flats. I don’t know what to do with these pants. Now that I have them, I see how photoshopped the hem is on the web page. Anyone else have them?

Is mesh ever work appropriate? Discuss
Clementine
Assuming work= professional office environment: yes, in shoes.
Daisy
Yes. I saw a KILLER dress once that was sheath, black up to just under the collar bone and then above that up to a crew neck + short sleeves was black mesh. Closet goals. This chick totally rocked & styled it appropriately (mid-height pumps, tailored jacket, great accessories) in the one-rung-under-business-formal office environment we worked in.
Daisy
FWIW, the mesh on the dress I saw was much finer, closer to a sheer panel than the mesh linked in the dress below.
anonymous
I can totally imagine wearing mesh in my business casual (very casual) environment. Like, maybe a cool structured blazer with small mesh inserts, strategically placed so you saw shirt and not skin through the mesh. Now I want to go shopping.

Hannah’s yellow mesh shirt from Season 2 of Girls ruined me for mesh forever (not that I was a big fan to start with).
recommendations?
I have a mesh top that I wear. It’s opaque and therefore not obvious that it’s mesh, and I usually wear it under a jacket.
recommendations?
There are several layers of mesh, hence why it’s opaque.

That sounds like a super cool shirt- link?

Here’s the link. It’s a different pattern that isn’t shown here.

Any plus sized ladies with brick and mortar shopping recommendations in the SF Bay Area? I’m willing to drive a bit. I am looking for high-end if possible work separates. I’m willing and able to spend, but I’m sick of mail order. I need to see and feel and try on. Thanks in advance!
Anon
Talbots in Walnut Creek has a big Women’s section with a delightful staff.
Anonymous
I’m in the same boat and have no good suggestions. You might try the Nordstrom in downtown SF – and even call a personal shopper in advance and give them specific criteria. Even point to things on the website? The best luck I’ve ever had was at a Nordstrom in suburban Chicago – they had an amazing plus size selection.
I have not had any luck with the Talbots in Walnut Creek, which seems to be designed for older ladies, not for career clothes, but I adore the Talbots women’s lines in general.
Meg
Nordstrom in suburban Chicago is the best-but sadly not helpful in SFO. Personally, I do a lot of online shopping.
TackyB
I haven’t had luck with the Walnut Creek Talbot’s, but I have had luck with the downtown SF Macy’s with a personal shopper appointment.
recommendations?
for a steamer for my silk and wool clothes?
Anon
Jiffy Steamer J-2000 residential series 1400 watt. I bought it four years ago on Amazon after messing around with small travel sized steamers and I will never go back. This is the big floor standing model. Worth every penny
Elizabeth
I have the Lucia pants and I love them. I’m tall and I didn’t hem them at all…I wear them with flats and they scrunch a little. I love the slim legs and no pockets, plus the fabric is divine.
Ellen
Yay, Elizabeth, I am not that tall, but I also had a positive expeince with Lucia Pant’s, even with my larger tuchus. They are well worth the money, but I have to carry a handbag b/c there are NO pocket’s to put my key’s or iphone. I recomend these to the HIVE.
Myrna also has a nice pair of pant’s and she has a very FLAT tuchus. She is very busy at work, and has some summer asociate’s working for her at work who she said want to sleep with her. Can you imagine her sleepeing with college kid’s? FOOEY!

Hair question – I am in my early 30s but have a good amount of grey hair due to genetics (my family gets grays in the teens). I usually dye it but want to know if it would be better if I stopped. I work for a conservative engineering firm and our clients are also conservatives and looking older could mean that I will be taken more seriously. Any opinions?

Go for it! Make it your signature style, be polished and professional in other aspects of your appearance, and own it!
Helene
This bag is called “Le Pliage” not “Le Pilage”, and it’s called this way because you can fold it.
It’s great when you want a bag that weighs less than leather.
