I can’t remember who it was who described dedicating bits of her run to people but I did it tonight:
– deconstructed fish pie
– raspberry ripple ice cream
– people who only run when they’re being chased
– little shorts
– shopping in H&M

Tell me more about deconstructed fish pie. That sounds like something I could get on board with!
LilyStudent
Potato wedges, a mornay sauce, peas, and a piece of white fish (you could use salmon or even prawns if you had them in). I don’t eat enough potato for it to be worth actually having potatoes in, so this is an almost entirely freezer/ store cupboard dish that feels really indulgent.

Oh man. I totally missed this morning’s discussion.
SF!
Hive, I just booked a 1.5 week trip to San Francisco to visit friends and interview for a job. I’ve only been to the area once, for one day, so I’m excited to explore! Where should I go? What should I do? All that’s on the agenda so far is a 2-day trip to Napa & Sonoma with a friend. I love good food/drinks, hiking, art/architecture, and meeting interesting people. Since I’m considering moving out to SF I want to get a feel for what it’s like to actually live there. I also want to relax a bit (I’m in BigLaw and it’s been incredibly rough lately). My friends will be working during the week, so I’ll be on my own during the weekdays. For context I’m single, early 30’s. Open to any and all suggestions! TIA :)
Orangerie
I’d recommend checking out the Marina/Cow Hollow area one day – I’m partial since I live there but it really is the best neighborhood. Both Union St. and Chestnut St. have a ton of shops and brunching options. You can also visit the Palace of Fine Arts while you’re there.
Also in the same neighborhood, but strictly weekend activities: the Fort Mason farmer’s market on Sunday mornings and Off the Grid food truck picnic (Friday evenings in Fort Mason and Sunday afternoons in the Presidio [the latter is much better than the former]).
You could head to the financial district and check out the Ferry Building farmer’s market if you can handle large crowds. Tuesday or Thursday is probably the best for this activity as there’s less people, but I think a larger amount of vendors show up for the Saturday market.
Hayes Valley and Russian Hill also have cute shopping areas you can wander through. If you’re in the Russian Hill area and feel like being touristy, you can walk down the curvy part of Lombard Street.
A fun outdoor activity if you’re up for it is renting a bike and exploring the Marina Green/Crissy Field going towards the Golden Gate Bridge. If you have access to a car, I highly recommend doing a hike in Mount Tamalpais State Park… parking is super easy if you go during the week.
Golden Gate Park is a bit of a trek from most neighborhoods, so I would recommend taking a cab if you want to go. The park is beautiful and there’s some great museums inside (De Young & Cal Academy of Sciences are my favorite, there’s also the Conservatory of Flowers).
As for dinner, there’s so many wonderful restaurants here. Honestly I’d try to avoid the downtown/Union Sq neighborhood and try somewhere in the Marina, Russian/Nob Hill, SOMA or the Mission. A few of my favorite restaurants are: Seven Hills, Baker & Banker, A16, Zero Zero, Nopa, Frascati, Wayfare Tavern, Cotogna, Umami (different from Umami Burger, but that place is also good), RN74, Terzo, Mamacita, and Locanda. Would definitely recommend making advance reservations at pretty much all of those places.
Have fun!
anon
Get the uber app for your phone if you don’t have it – much easier to take around SF than cabs.
Alice
These are great recommendations.
If you do go to Golden Gate Park and don’t feel like paying a ton for the De Young, it’s still free to go inside and go up the tower, which has a great view of the city.
And you can always take BART to the East Bay and spend some time checking out Berkeley, Oakland, etc. Don’t have time to write up recommendations but if you move to SF there’s a chance you’ll meet lots of people who live in that neck of the woods.
Orangerie
One more thing: if you like architecture, spend a couple hours walking around Pacific Heights (specifically Broadway between Divisadero & Lyon – “Billionaire’s Row”) admiring the pretty houses.

I definitely recommend the Museum of Modern Art if you like art.

I don’t but have been eyeing it so I’d love to hear reviews as well. It looks like it’s a little short in front and I’m wondering how the torso length is to tuck it in.

I don’t have that particular item, but I have almost everything else they make and have been really impressed with the quality, esp for the price points. Overall, the line runs a little large & slightly boxy. I wouldn’t hesitate to try it if you like the look of it. Fast shipping. (I’ve never returned anything so not sure how they are with those)
glass ceiling
My boyfriend, who is two years older than me, just got a job in my industry, in a very similar role, with the same title. He has five years of mostly unrelated experience in the Army, whereas I have about five years of experience in this field. I negotiated my pay and have received decent raises, and while I never thought I made the top pay of what people with similar jobs do, I felt comfortable with what I receive.
Well – my boyfriend has been offered FIFTY percent more than what I make. If I stay with my company, I don’t see myself making this much for another five plus years. I know what he makes has nothing to do with me, but it’s making me feel really bad. About myself and my company. About the fact that he’s a man and earning so much more. Have any of you dealt with similar dynamics?
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul
I’m no help but this kind of stuff frustrates me to no end. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this!

Yes. Look for new jobs right now and negotiate. It’s going to make you feel bad if you do nothing about it.
Anon in NYC
In a previous job I learned that I was making about 30k less than a man with my same job title who had 1 more year of experience than I did, and roughly 20k less than a different man with the same amount of experience and the same job title. It was awful, and I felt terrible about myself, my co-workers, and my boss. It was a strong motivating factor for me in deciding what my next career step would be. When I went back to law school and started thinking about biglaw, one of the things that attracted me was lockstep compensation because I never wanted to feel like that again.
I would say that time helps, but I was angry up until the day I left. You should think about using this as an opportunity to do more research and negotiate with your current employer.
black ballet flats
While not in your same position, I did use my “anger” that I found myself when trying to negotiate my raise. I work in gov’t, so the asking-for-raise isn’t quite the same as with priv. sector. That being said, I did a lot of national research, comparing salaries & job descriptions for current job listings in my industry. I matched job descriptions as closely as I could to my own, and then adjusted the hiring range for cost of living as compared to mine.
I was just baffled when I found that there are jurisdictions paying, on average, 60-110% more than what I currently make.
In the end, I got 7.5%, but there may be more wiggle toward the first of the year. Let’s hope so.
I hear your frustration, and I wish that it weren’t this way at all.
Ellen
This can be frustrating, but think of the bright side. At least between the 2 of you, if you get MARRIED, you will have alot more income then you would have alone. I had this issue b/f I got to be a partner. Even tho I was dateing a drunk, he was an acountant and made alot more money then I did. But I had to dump him b/c he was drunk all the time, vomitted on my floor and left his soiled underwear for me to clean. FOOEY ON THAT!
So I dumped him and made partner, and am makeing alot more money, thank’s to Dad negoteiating it for me, but it STILL would be better if I were MARRIED to a guy so we would have 2 income’s as long as I worked, but once I had a baby, I would RETIRE to a life in Chapaqua with Rosa. YAY!!!!
pregomama
If it helps, I’m good friends with the hiring manager on a team that had openings. All started at the same budget. The guy she hired asked for a salary in her budget, and that’s what he got. One woman came in with more experience and asked for more, and she got it. The other two hires were all young women and came in from consulting and asked for about 1.4 of the budget. They all got it. The hiring manager eliminated the last opening to make room for all the extra salary.
Just saying…in a new role, if the person hiring is desperate to fill/ wants you bad enough, they’ll pay whatever you want.

Does it look bad to wear tan shoes that are a few shades lighter than my skin? If’ I’m going to wear something brown or tan colored, do I need to make sure it can pass for nude for me?
Pink NYC
No and No. Nothing HAS to pass as nude for you (unless you’re trying to wear a bra or cami that blends so that your white bra doesn’t show under your white T-shirt–learned that the hard way)
BB
Agree. I’m wearing shoes a few shades lighter than my skin now. I just like that they match any non-black/gray/brown/navy colors I’m wearing. Don’t care about them matching my skin. :)
Mpls
I believe the “nude-for-me” trend is about lengthening the leg line by not have the visual disturbance of a different color that pulls the eye towards the feet.
If you have no interest in participating that trend, or if that is not your intent with your shoe choice, you can do whatever the heck you’d like :)
hoola hoopa
No, but I usually treat it as a color rather than nude in those situations.

I just got an invitation to an annual work event and the dress code is specified as “snappy summer casual”. I have no clue what this means. I’ve attended in previous years and the dress code seemed to be firmly business casual so I really don’t know what to make of this. Help?
emeralds
Nicer casual dress with a cardigan or blazer would be my pick.
black ballet flats
I think of preppy summer when I hear those words together…Bright colors, classic pieces. Maybe a bright print a-line or pencil skirt with coordinating top/cardi/wrap & flats or cute sandals? Sleeveless dress (not strappy sundress, though). Slim cropped pants & flats with blouse & casual blazer?
mascot
This is my definition as well. I live in the south though so maybe it is a regional thing.
tesyaa
I would boycott any event with that dress code. OK, not necessarily, but it’s really silly sounding.
Mpls
It also defeats the purpose of having a dress code, which is to put everyone on the same page as to the formality of dress.
When someone starts getting “creative” they have missed the point of having the code in the first place, because they have now made it HARDER to figure out. Because while the concept is clear to the host/hostess, everyone else is trying really hard to read their mind and interpret it.
Wildkitten
Flats: https://corporette.com/2014/08/05/interview-flats/
Wildkitten
I think it just means business casual.
Duchess
Sounds Southern to me… We used the phrase snappy casual for sorority rush. Then, it just basically meant wear cute clothes than are nicer than what you’d usually wear. So instead of jeans, I wore black pants (it was the early 2000s!) and I think a sparkly top. In your case, I’d do a seersucker dress or something Vineyard Vines-y, but no cleavage, work appropriate hemlines, etc.
black ballet flats
I’m at the point of needing to replace my black (and my brown) flats. I have been subsisting on various pairs of t a r g e t flats for several years, and getting surprisingly good wear out of them (about a year–can’t complain when they’re on sale for $5 like the blue Ona flats I just scored today). I don’t have a lot of money to spend, so this is actually going to be a save-for-it purchase. I am ready to move up in the world of flats to something higher quality & more professional look.
I don’t live in a big market, so finding brick & mortar is difficult, we do have basics like Rack Room & belk/jcp. No D S W or similar. I tend to do most of my shopping online and just pray for good size/fit so I don’t have to return. That being said, free returns are critical.
I have pretty normal feet. Somewhat fallen arches, but not pronating. I wear a 5.5-6. I am looking for something that is basic/classic, but not plain. Modest decoration is ok (bow, cap toe, folded leather, etc..no studs, contrasting colors, etc.). I don’t like super-pointy, but I could be convinced. I work in business-casual, so in fall through spring, I anticipate I’d wear these a few times a week (alternate between other color flats, too, but overall flats are kind of my go-to shoe during the work week)
My biggest feature I want is comfort. I would like full-grain leather, not patent. Suede or nubuck are ok, but less desirable. Ideally, I’d like to spend under $75, and that’s really pushing it.
What are your own personal favorites that would fit this bill, and/or what strikes you that would meet these criteria?
tesyaa
I have been shopping for flats this summer. Do you want really flat ballet-type flats with a very thin sole and no heel whatsoever, or something more substantial? If you want flat flats, I don’t think that the more expensive versions are worth it in terms of looks and durability (this is just my opinion – others may differ – but truly flat flats are not meant to have a very long life span). If you want something more substantial, consider Clark’s and maybe Rockport. You should be able to find something in your price range on sale.
Wildkitten
I ordered some tieks and am hoping they turn out to be durable flats.
black ballet flats
Either–and I don’t even mind a very small wedge, considering I’m only 5’2″, also.
I appreciate your thought about thin sole / substantial leather not being a great combination for longevity and durability–that makes a lot of sense.
I will check out the Clarks & rockports, but my experience with them, is that sometimes they tend toward frumpy and less polished? Maybe I just haven’t found the right ones yet.
tesyaa
Yes, I agree that they’re on the frumpy side and that’s why I buy semi-disposable flats. However, I work in a business casual office that tends towards the more casual side.
tesyaa
I didn’t mean to suggest you should wear frumpy shoes; just acknowledging many of Clarks and Rockport styles are a bit frumpy, but certainly not all of them. I think you could find something cute from those brands if you want a shoe with a bit of structure.
lawsuited
I wear the Michael Kors Fulton flats to and from work during the week and think they are flat flats but have more cushioning and comfort than some other flat flats but are not frumpy looking (I can’t bring myself to buy Clarks). They are over $75 though.
Wildkitten
Both this s!te and cap hill style did posts on black flats this week.

thanks for the cap hill pointer–I did see this page’s roundup of flats earlier this week.

I own them in black leather, black patent, and nude-for-me patent. I wear them year round, and they last a long time. I like them so much that I’ve been wearing this style for about 4 years now (when one pair wears out, I re-buy).
LVJG
I love these shoes, but I have found that I need to 1/2 size up.
Duchess
Sam Edelman Felicia for a true flat or Noah for a small hidden wedge. These are all I wear to work, and they are incredibly comfortable. I’d say the Felicias are a little bit more polished looking than the Noahs. The Noahs seem to have too much leather across the vamp (at least for my feet), so they end up looking slightly loose. Still totally appropriate in my humble opinion, but the Felicias are just a little neater.
black ballet flats
WOW! thanks for these. And the ivanka trump ones too–I did look at those, and they’re pretty darling.
Thanks for all the responses!

I’m a big fan of Born flats for comfort, which are regularly available on Zappos. I have a suede pair that is holding up really well. I usually have to order a size down in Born. I also really like Frye Carson ballet flats for a well-made basic flat. They run over $100, but I’ve found them on deep discount at Nordstrom Rack and Amazon. I have them in two colors and love them.
hoola hoopa
Look at Clarks on zappos. They do a lot of “comfort” shoes that look it, but they also have professional flats that fit the bill, particularly on sale.
Sigh, this is for Black ballet flats, above.
Anon for this
I’m in a bit of a job predicament and would love the hive’s input: recently, a former boss who has just joined a new company offer me a job. I have great respect for my former boss and consider him a friend and a mentor. The work with the new company would be slightly different than what I do now but much more exciting. The pay, on an hourly basis, would also be a pretty significant bump from my pay. The only problem is, the position would start on a contract basis (1099) with a high probability (but no guarantee) of becoming permanent soon.
I’m generally happy at my current job. The pay is decent and stable. I’m well-liked by everyone and have a pretty good prospect at moving up the ladder in the future. But lately, I’m being increasingly assigned to projects that do not align with my interest or background, which makes me question my future with this company.
If the position with the new company was offered as a permanent position rather that contract, I would have no hesitation at all. But as a contract position, it raises several concerns: (1) there’s no guaranteed hours so if work is light, my pay will be light, and (2) there is no guarantee of the job becoming permanent (my former boss says he hopes it will be permanent soon once people work with me and see my work product). I’m mostly bothered by #2 since #1 is bearable is it is only temporary. I’m really excited about this opportunity but am really anxious about moving from a permanent position to a contract one. Thoughts?
Wildkitten
Is the pay increase still substantial if you are paying your own payroll taxes w/o benefits, under 1099?
Celia
Contract/1099 basis vs. payroll: usually figure in at least 30% to cover benefits like health insurance, payroll taxes and holidays. You would only bill straight hours, no OT. If you aren’t working, you’re not billing (like Labor Day). If the new position is still more *after* taking no benefits into consideration, then go for it.
As a 1099 contractor, you’d be able to write off your auto expenses, cell phone (100% as long as you have a land-line at home, otherwise you have to calculate work vs. personal use), supplies, health insurance for the self-employed, and your share of the payroll tax. Like a business.
It depends on what you’re comfortable with.
