Early morning TJ – has anyone ever transitioned from law to another career? I’ve been barely keeping my legal career afloat since graduating in 2009 (t50 school, top 1/3, journal but not LR… ok stats but not outstanding), working for a solo, some contract attorney work, and now a full time staff attorney gig that’s basically doc review with benefits but no upward mobility. I keep trying to get jobs where I can use my brain and be challenged and learn and practice law (firms, govt. work, companies, even quasi-legal stuff like compliance) and have been searching for awhile with no luck. I’ve gotten a few interviews, but lost them all to candidates from biglaw.
I’m in my early 30s, in a relationship (so can’t pick up and leave for a different city), and have a ton of law school loans. Can I really switch careers at this point? Going back to my pre-law school career is not really an option, since it’s NYC-focused and I’m not in NYC.
Anon
Have you tried consulting? I know some consulting firms recruit people with top law degrees…it’s a tough job but could be a bridge to somethign in business
Op
Who saw 50 Shades of Grey? It was apparently a huge success but nobody I know saw it. And the reviews just make it seem terrible. Is it basically portraying r a p e as love? Apparently she says no and he forces her. How is this movie making so much money????
Anonymous
So, there’s a lot of critique of how their relationship works but I think saying it’s a movie about rape is an overstatement. It’s making money for the same reason the book did- it taps into desires and fantasies a lot of women have.
Ellen
Yay! Pricey Monday’s! I love Pricey Monday’s and this OSCAR DE LA RENTA outfit. It is VERY styleish, Kat, and I am glad you are publicizeing it b/c Oscar died last October and I was VERY sad about that. Good for you, Kat for being a dear and not forgeting about him. He dressed alot of star’s and even some President’s wive’s in DC, like Jackie O’Nassis! YAY JACKIE!
As for the OP, I did NOT see the movie, yet, and will see it with Myrna. Personaly, I do NOT like a man takeing to much charge over me sexueally. I had enough of that with Sheketovits, putting his winkie where it did NOT belong. I think you ladie’s know what I am talkeing about. Suffice it to say that he liked me b/c of my ampel tuchus, but that was NOT an excuse for him to be useing it for his fantasie’s. FOOEY! BTW, today, I slipped twice and landed on my Ampel TUCHUS. Now that is what it is therefore, to cushon our bodie’s when we fall on the ice. NOT for Sheketovit’s fantasies and his pencil winkie. DOUBEL FOOEY.
BTW, another lead goe’s down the toielet. Donald came over this weekend, and it seem’s he is MORE interested in Myrna then me. He told Myrna that he was NOT dateing anyone and would she be availeabel for him. What a looser! Myrna told him to get lost and I told him to leave my apartement after I found out he was sniffeing around Myrna! TRIPEL FOOEY! Do men have any sense at all? Or are they just led around by their winkie’s, and expect us to just let anything they want happen? NO WAY HOZE!
I think we women have to stand up for what is RIGHT, and that means NOT letting men do whatever they want. Dad had alot of fun with women behind the IRON CURTAIN, but he ALWAYS treated them with respect, meaneing that they were NOT unhappy after they had sex or whatever. He said they alway’s told him he could come back and he gave them gift’s also. So I do NOT know about the 50 shade’s of Gray guy, but who care’s if he gave cheep gifts, a woman’s pride is more important then a $3 box of Chocolate from CVS. That is what Sheketovits got me. FOOEY!

BDSM
It’s frustrating since it’s written by and read by and watched by primarily those without any experience in BDSM or kink and it is without a doubt rape. Everyone I know who practices and is knowledgeable about BDSM finds the whole thing abhorrent, myself included. It doesn’t even seem to acknowledge trust or consent, just a rich white man using his power and status to get what he wants… forcefully.
Anonymous
Honestly, the intercourse didn’t bother me all that much (I don’t know anything about BDSM) but, it seemed mostly consensual in the movie (though I don’t think that’s the case in the books? I don’ know, I haven’t read them).
The biggest ick thing of the movie to me is that he’s clearly an abusive controlling creep. He follows her around, “saves” her from drinks out with her friends, gets super possessive when she mentions seeing male friends but has no problem with going to see former lovers, then buys off his bad behavior with pretty toys, etc.
Bonnie
This is the book I hated the most from my book club. None of the se*ual activity seemed forced but the control in her personal life was creepy.
Op
Doesn’t she say no though? How does this reconcile with the yes means yes idea?
Anonymous
Have you read the book? Or seen the movie? What gives you the idea she says no? She doesn’t. The issue is that he bullies and manipulates her into doing something she wouldn’t have chosen for herself. Not that she says no and he says ok rape time.
Katie
“Bullies and manipulates her into doing something she wouldn’t have chosen for herself” sounds like coercion to me.
Op
Yeah, exactly. No, I haven’t read the book, like I said, but I have read a good number of reviews of it, and a lot of them are pretty harsh. I just don’t see how women are justifying paying to see that kind of thing.
Bonnie
It’s been a long time since I’ve read it but I don’t even remember him manipulating her into any activity. It was more that she agreed to just a se*ual relationship even though she wanted more. As far as I recall all of the activity was consensual and some of it initiated by her. I think the book was utter trash but I was offended by the controlling nature of the personal relationship than anything regarding se*ual activity. I wouldn’t rely on anyone’s editorial to form your own views.
Anonymous
I mean, if you want to judge women for not having perfectly politically correct sexual tastes, go for it. I think it’s pretty exciting to see some real money behind pandering to what a pretty large bunch of women are turned on by. If you want to stick your head in the sand and pretend to be bewildered by the fact that clearly lots of women find it hot, by all means do so.
cbackson
The s*x is very clearly consensual in the movie (I haven’t read the books). Much of the rest of the relationship is, in my opinion, predatory, but she enthusiastically consents to the s*x. The coercion is around the more hardcore BDSM aspects of the relationship.
Also, I found the movie incredibly boring, during the non-creepy parts.
Anonattorney
@cbackson – the book is incredibly boring! And not even really that scandalous. I really don’t understand all the uproar about this book and movie. The bdsm is pretty tame; everything is very consensual — they are negotiating a contract, for god’s sake; and it pretty much follows every formulaic romance novel I’ve ever read. Man is wealthy, rich, aloof, and troubled. Young woman meets him and he becomes intrigued. She is instantly attracted to him because he is oh-so confident and in control. But, she also starts to strip away some of his walls and eccentricities . . .
No, it’s not a feminist manifesto. But it’s not a book that promotes violence against women, rape, or even drastically unhealthy relationships. It’s just a dumb, poorly written grocery store novel that got way more play than it deserved.
cbackson
Anonymous: I actually think the relationship is pretty significantly unhealthy, but ultimately, I don’t think the relationship or the BDSM is what attracts women to this book. FSOG is just the latest in a long line of what I often refer to as fantasies of economic rescue – billionaire swoops in and plucks a seemingly ordinary woman out of her life, taking her off to a land where she doesn’t have to worry about anything anymore, including, most significantly, money. That’s why there’s almost always a bit about him buying her clothes, shoes, cars, etc. Ultimately, it’s not about Christian Grey’s whips and chains; it’s about his Amex card.
It’s actually interesting to me that, although Twilight is (justly) criticized, in Twilight it is the heroine’s desire (s*xual and romantic) for the hero that drives the narrative, while in FSOG, it’s the hero’s desire for the heroine that is portrayed as this uncontrollable force. Twilight is a much more interesting book for precisely that reason, IMO.

I am an attorney looking for a job in a tech start up, and want to know if any ‘rettes have done this. If you live in the DC area, and are open to speaking with me in person, I would love to take you out for coffee.
L in DC
Have you tried talking to attorneys who represent start-ups/emerging companies in the DC area? They see a lot of these companies and tend to have a good idea of what companies are going to do well. They’ll also know which companies are a point where they’re ready to hire someone in-house and they can make introductions/get your resume into the right hands if they like you and think that you could be a good fit. That’s how I’d find a tech start-up job as an attorney…

Here’s a fun one. I need gift ideas for my soon-to-be 16-year-old nephew. He loves trivia and is the president of his Latin club. I tend to do well with infographic books or anything filled with facts, but I feel like I’ve exhausted that category. Any other ideas?
Katie
What’s your price range? If he has a favorite Latin author, you could give a Loeb Classical Library volume (little red books, published by Harvard). They have the Latin text on one side and the English translation on the facing page. Or, if money is no object, the Oxford Latin Dictionary is gorgeous and amazing
LA anon
Around $50.
Sonnet
This is a great idea. Each Loeb costs about $25, so you could do a nice two-volume pair. My suggestions would be either the set of Ovid’s Metamorphoses or the set of Virgil (which includes Aeneid as well as the Eclogues and Georgics). I would have loved to have received something like this when I was 16!
Katie
Second the recs for both Ovid and Virgil! Signed, a Latin geek

Does he know about QI? I don’t know how widely watched it is outside of the UK. At that age I’d have loved the various QI Books of General Ignorance and a DVD box set. They give you so much trivia!

Any attorneys out there working in house for a start-up in the DC area? I am contemplating looking for a position at a start-up and would love to pick your brain about how to go about my job search.
SH
I don’t work for a start-up per se, but I was one of the first 6 employees at my company, which is a US subsidiary of an international company, so it definitely acts/acted like a start-up. I’d be happy to chat if you think this is similar enough to glean some information from. You can email me at medicaldevicehelp@gmail.com (not my actual email address, but the one I get all our industry news with, so I do check it).
Generally, make sure you have a good appetite for risk and that you’re comfortable doing (almost) everything you need to in order to move the business forward.

Any advice for buying sneakers that aren’t running shoes? I’ve been taking a variety of exercise classes lately (yay classpass!) and I definitely need new shoes. I think some type of cross trainers would be best since I’m doing a lot of side to side movements in some of the classes, not just forward movement. I have various foot issues (flat feet, overpronation) and therefore would prefer a store that has foot specialists. Unfortunately, it seems like most of those stores in my area only sell running shoes. Does anyone have recommendations for specific shoes, specific stores (Atlanta or national chains) or advice on what to look for? Thanks!
Anon
Anecdata, but I also have flat feet and overpronation, and I wear Brooks Pureflow 3 for everything (running, cross training, etc). They’ve served me very, very well.
mascot
Have you looked at Road Runner Sports online? They sell cross-training shoes and some descriptors on their site. I’d probably also look at the brands you use for running shoes and see if they have cross trainers. My husband has flat feet with overpronation and runs in Brooks or Adidas.
You might also want to call Big Peach and Phidippides and see if they have recommendations. They cater to runners, but likely get lots of requests from runners who cross-train.
Anon
We’ve always had a great experience at the Big Peach in Midtown.
Anonymous
I have the same issues and got both cross-trainers and running shoes at NewBalance in Buckhead. The salesperson was very knowledgeable and helpful. I’m a NewBalance convert as of a few years ago. So much less pain. But my suggestion won’t help if you need to look across various brands.

moving cross-country - wisdom?
Seeking this group’s shared wisdom re: moving cross-country for a job. For many reasons – better pay, better hours, big career boost – I’m close to accepting a position 3 time zones away from home. Early 30s, no kids, SO willing to relocate and take a chance at finding a job in new place.
Questions include, am I crazy? tips on becoming a first-time landlord for the condo I own? how do I maintain personal/professional relationships, knowing that I probably want to return to Current Place in several years? how do I help SO search for a position using current contacts in New Place? has anyone balanced frequent (1 week every 5-6 weeks, for example) trips home (working remotely as permitted by New Employer) when the trips are a flight instead of a drive?
roses
Haven’t done this myself, but 1) no, not crazy at all, people do this all the time, and 2) if you are moving far away I’d consider outsourcing your landlord duties to a management company. Reasonably priced ones charge about 10% of the rent as a fee, but it’s worth it to avoid the headache of being a landlord from far away.
BelleB
I moved in with my SO and rented out my condo. Even though we’re still in the same city (Chicago) I still outsourced landlord duties to a management company because I don’t have the time or interest to deal with it. It was a fantastic decision. They handle everything – showing the unit, collecting rent, maintenance requests, etc.
CountC
I outsourced the rental of my home to a realtor/PM and then was transitioned to a PM company. Same situation, they charge 10% of the rent as their fee, which is industry standard as far as I can tell. I love my house so much that I needed to distance myself from it and not be a crazy landlord. It has been well worth the money.

Reposting from yesterday to get some more responses: Does anyone have a Rebecca Minkoff MAB bag where the base of the handles have held up for over a year? I have the saffiano leather version and the very thin leather at all four handle bases cracked within the first 2 months just from normal use so I am not happy with it. Then again, I love the style and I received it as a gift, so I would like to replace it with the same design if possible. Maybe the smooth leather version doesn’t have this problem? Thanks.
Anonny
Smooth leather one had the problem for me – toast after 2-3 months.
Bonnie
I have a soft leather one that has been going strong for 2 years.
Anonymous
I’ve had a smooth leather one for about 6 months now, and no cracking (knock on wood). I give some pretty serious workouts, too; lots of work travel; stuffing it with redwells, binders, and laptops to the point that I actually bruised myself carrying it (oops). It’s still my favorite bag.
But, I’ve heard lots of complaints about this bag not holding up, so maybe mine will die, too, or maybe there are just a lot of lemons. Did you buy the bag at Nordstrom? If so, take it back. They should give you a brand new one.

Need to pick the hive mind. Let’s say you would like to work for a particular organization, and always keep an eye on their job postings. Something opens up, but it’s at a higher level than you’d normally apply for. You could MAYBE make a case for being qualified for this position (slightly less experience than the minimum stated requirement in the posting, but I am guessing the typical applicant for this job has a LOT more experience). If you applied for the post, and didn’t get very far, would you lose credibility if you then later applied for more junior positions in the same organization? Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Diana Barry
Apply!!!!!!
I don’t think the screening people would hold it against you – since it sounds like Organization is your dream Organization.
Zelda
Definitely apply! I got my current job with 2 years less experience than they wanted. This is (supposedly) one of the reasons why men are promoted more quickly than women, because they are more likely to apply to stretch jobs while women are more likely to only apply if they meet all/most of the qualifications. Assuming that you are reasonably within the ballpark of the necessary qualifications, if anything, you would gain credibility as someone who is looking to advance, increase her responsibility, etc.
mascot
Apply. Job posting are part absolute requirements and part wish list.
GIlda
Not at all.
I think there is absolutely zero downside to applying for jobs like that. At worst, its a chance to get your name and resume in front of people that you want to work with.
I applied for a SUPER COMPETITIVE JOB with my dream org. I didn’t get it but they really liked me so when the director of the business group needed an assistant they called and offered that job (I was 25.) It was a fantastic opportunity. The director was awesome to work for, totally took me under her wing and has been a huge advocate in my career. In fact, I now have a much better career than the cohort of people who got the job I originally applied for. The director has since become a true friend and mentor. You never know what is going to happen. Apply!
I will also recommend saying in someway why this org/job is your dream org/job. Agencies want people who want to work for that group and will be willing to dig in. I currently work for an odd branch of a fancy org. I will definitely hire people who are have good but not great credentials but express genuine enthusiasm for working on my odd-ball portfolio rather than someone who has rockstar credentials but is not as clearly passionate.
Good luck.
Anon
Do not use the phrase “dream job” in your interview or cover letter unless you can prove that truthfully, you were writing, “I want to be a [role] at [organization]” on your “What i want to be when i grow up” poster in 2nd grade.
I run product development for a software company. When someone tells me an opening is their “dream job” what they really mean is “this sounds like a great fit for my talent and where I am looking to go next with my career, with a company I believe in, and a manager/corporate philosophy around hours worked and PTO that will make my currently miserable life a lot more manageable.” I’d much rather hear the latter, because I *know* you didn’t graduate college figuring out how to get This Exact Job from day 1.
Bar examinee
Looking for some support and advice. I am taking the bar exam next week. It is my second bar–I passed the first time, but then moved to a different state–so I know I should not be this nervous, but I have had much less time to study because I have been working full time. I was given permission to take some time off to study but every time my work email pings I get a surge of anxiety that someone is going to ask me to do something, and it’s hard to then re-focus on preparing for the test. I just cannot wait for this to be over.
Claire M
Can you study without looking at your work email? Maybe try to set aside a three hour block to study, then take a break and check email for 10 minutes, then go back to studying for another block of time?
You’ve passed the exam once – you have a leg up on everyone else! Remember that it’s a minimum competency exam. Good luck!!
tesyaa
Agree, if possible turn off your phone/work email or at least change your notifications settings.
Anon Bar Exam Panic
I’m in a similar boat! If your employer gave you time off to study, then try not to worry about it. They know you are studying and if it was an emergency, you would probably get a phone call instead of an e-mail. That being said, everything you’re feeling now is totally normal! Everyone, including myself, panics two weeks before the exam and doesn’t know how they will pass. If you’re too anxious and not being productive, take a break! Do some yoga, have some tea, watch a show, etc. Studying when you are not productive can backfire. You’ ll just become exhausted and lose focus. Try to relax and be positive. Also, most people taking the exam in February are probably working full or part time so that may help with any curve on the exam. Good luck and I’m sure we will both pass!
snack bars
What’s your favorite healthy real food snack bar and why? Kind, Lara, Luna, Cliff…
I like Kind for when I want interesting flavors, but Lara seems to be the healthiest and the most filling.
Bars
ProBars. I’ll have a ProBar Base when I need a complete meal replacement (b/c 20g of protein) and a ProBar Meal if I’m getting additional protein elsewhere (they average 8-11g of protein). All ProBars are vegan, dairy-free, certified organic, certified non-GMO, and many are also gluten free. I don’t have any food restrictions (I’m not vegan, I eat dairy, gluten, etc) but to me, these are a good combination of high-quality ingredients and good flavor. They are pricey, but routinely 2 for $4 at Whole Foods.

I’m not sure where they range on the health scale, but other than Kind bars, I also like the Fiber One Oats and Caramel and Oats and Peanut Butter bars and the Nature Valley Sweet and Salty Nut bar.
I’m on a high fiber diet right now so I have the Fiber One bars everyday. They’re really tasty.

Recruitment help
I am a first year MBA and really, really struggling with recruiting. I had a lot of great first round on campus interviews, but nothing has come of any of them. The feedback I’ve gotten has been fairly unhelpful i.e. “you were good, but others had more/better experience.” I go to a T25 school but with very limited work experience. I’ve been focused on consulting and LDPs, I think I would also be happy with finance or ops. I just can’t seem to break in anywhere. If anyone has advice or experience dealing with this, I’d love to hear it.
MJ
I was younger when I went to b-school and sometimes, as a younger candidate, you just can’t stack up against older candidates, especially for management jobs. I would (1) do some video interviews to make sure that you are not interviewing badly; (2) start sourcing your own jobs through networking so that you aren’t competing against your (older, more experienced) classmates. Consulting generally doesn’t care if you’re younger, so the age thing is a red flag for me–you may not be doing case interviews the right way (just a conjecture!). I would definitely sit down with your CDO and figure out how to rejigger your jobsearch. Alumni are definitely the answer. They will pull for you.

How limited is your work experience? Recruiting is going to be difficult if you have anything fewer than 2-3 years of experience. Agree with MJ on the consulting – they don’t care about how much experience you have, but you are probably need to improve on case interviews. LDPs are going to be difficult because plenty of experienced people want those, the interviewers are going to ask a lot of experience questions (when did you lead a team etc.), and it’s going to be difficult for you to compete. You may want to look into smaller, less well-known companies and consulting firms.

Advise appreciated:
A few months ago, I was promoted to lead a small team. For the most part, things are going well. However, one attorney is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. He cherry-picks his work within the team, refuses to report to me and reports only to partners instead, does not follow instructions as a principle (as in “Please send to A for approval before sending to B”) etc. So basically, he is ignoring my position. I have already addressed this with the partner, who decided we need to keep this attorney no matter what as he has a very specialized area of expertise. Unfortunately, this was communicated (not by me). I have also spoken to the colleague himself at length about his expectations, my expectations and how we can work together. All to no avail.
Today, for example, a client requested that this particular attorney participates in a 1 day off-site meeting about 2 ½ hours away. I presented this to him as an opportunity to build a great personal relationship with the client. However, he told me flat out that he refuses to travel. When the partner asked him 5 minutes later (independent of me), he happily accepted.
This is becoming oh-so tiresome. I would be glad to let him go or to assign him to another team, but this option is not available. Any advise on how to end this would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like he didn’t want to do it and doesn’t really respect your authority, but it’s different when a partner asks him and he probably interpreted it as he had to. Maybe it would help to be more collaborative with this partner in front of him – so if he declines something and accepts it a second later, point it out in front of him and the partner. If he doesn’t follow the outlined chain of whatever he’s supposed to do, make sure you are pointing this out to both him and the partner. Usually the chain of approvals is there for a reason and the person who has set it up would like to know if it is not followed.
A second thing is to make sure you are straightforward. This is maybe not applicable to your situation, but something like, “Hey, if you go to this meeting you would have a great opportunity to build a personal relationship with the client” is a lot of cheesy mumbo jumbo. “Hey, the client has requested you at this offsite meeting. Are you able to make it?” is better and a realistic view of the situation.

This sounds really annoying. It sounds like the partner is not only not willing to fire this guy, but also is unwilling to get in the middle of your disputes, is that right? Otherwise, I don’t see why the partner can’t say to him, listen, this is the chain of command, I don’t want to see these emails directly from you, etc. Maybe you can have another conversation with the partner, to see if he or she is willing to back you up that far. If it’s indeed the case that the partner is unwilling to intervene or enforce your position, I’m not sure there’s much you can do other than let it go. I hope others have better advice.

Do you get to review him? It might be helpful to remind of this, if you will be doing so. It sounds like there’s nothing to be lost by being direct that his behavior is disrespectful and you believe he is wasting resources with his refusal to be managed.

No advice. But virtual hugs. Have been there and I did end changing jobs (which in the long term was better for me).
Maybe some advice: don’t lose your temper.

I’ve totally dealt with this. If he doesn’t respect you, meet with him and ask him to do stuff, and then cc the partner on the follow-up “just wanted to clarify our meeting” email. Similarly, for requests such as the offsite meeting, start cc’ing. If he doesn’t respect you alone, he likely will respect you when the partner is on the email string.
I would not call him out on contradictory behavior in front of the partner. Then it just looks like you are fighting and can’t get along. Just be professional and ignore how unprofessional he’s being.
Pink
Is this where the cc can be used to your advantage? ie. cc the partner on all communications and if said partner asks why, you can say, it’s to keep partner in loop, or to make clear that it’s a request from the partner and the person can’t tell you one thing and then respond differently to the partner.

I’d love some advice on this work issue, as I’m not sure if I’m being oversensitive or really have an issue I need to address. I apologize for the length!
For background, an area of my responsibility was unofficially “taken” from me by a coworker whose role changed recently (such that it sort of made sense that he would possibly take this responsibility from me). For several days before I mentioned this to my boss, I thought Boss had supported this taking–turns out he wasn’t aware and supports me in continuing to do this work (which I really enjoy).
During those few days when I thought I no longer had this responsibility, my coworker began work on a big document related to this area of responsibility. Coworker kept ownership of this document before submitting it, asking me for some high-level input along the way. He then sent it to Boss for final review. The next day, Boss and Coworker both went on vacation. I was tasked (by Coworker) with accepting Boss’s final changes and submitting the document while both were on vacation.
Boss then emailed me with corrections, noting that he was dismayed at how many corrections needed to be made, and telling me he thought I had reviewed it and that we could discuss it when he returned. He emailed this to me at midnight on his vacation, which means he was dealing with this and thinking it was my fault and probably feeling resentful. I did respond with a short and professional (not defensive–really) email thanking him for reviewing and saying that I had not reviewed it and that I would have been happy to, had I been asked.
Boss is now back and seems to have moved on–he hasn’t mentioned it. This situation still bothers me a lot. I want to reiterate to Boss that not only did I not have anything to do with the messy document, I would have been happy to own the document had Coworker not attempted to usurp my area of responsibility.
I’m not sure if I’m just annoyed and want to complain, or if I really should address this with Boss to make sure he is very clear that this wasn’t my shoddy work.
Thoughts? Do I let it drop or have a chat with my boss?
Bonnie
If you do address it, I would focus on the future and not on this particular incident. You could approach Boss to make sure who is tasked with area X for future projects so there is no confusion about who should be involved in the projects. It would be a good time for you to state that you want to be the lead for whatever reason.

I will be doing a press conference tomorrow for a huge case that my firm just won. We recently started our firm, and this is the first big win and a great opportunity to get some exposure. This is also my first time in talking with the media. Tips on what to wear/colors and patterns to avoid? I also intend to get my nails done-is there a color I should have them painted/avoid having them painted? Finally, for my hair, should it be partially pulled back or is down okay?
FWIW: I’m 30, and 4 years in to my career, and I look fairly young. So, I want to look as competent and trustworthy as possible. Thanks!

I have given more press conferences than I would like in the last few years. First and foremost, wear something you feel comfortable in. Navy looks better than black, charcoal looks better than a pale grey. Wear a bright but not neon solid or incredibly subtle pattern underneath it. Don’t have your nails be too shiny – a neutral, more matte color plays better, but that’s a small worry. Down is okay as long as it’s immaculately styled. Look at your interviewers, not the cameras – the camera person will shoot you correctly!
Congrats on the big win!

Putting on my big girl pants and going to see an OB/GYN instead of my PCP. I thought there was a recent thread on gynecologists in Manhattan but the search function doesn’t work from my office computer. Can someone point me in the right direction? Any new recommendations are welcome as well. I also just moved so don’t have internet at home either…
Much appreciated.

Why? Are you TTC? I’ve made the reverse switch (from OB/GYN to PCP) as I’ve “grown up.”

I’ve been wearing Clinique makeup for the past couple of years for no real reason. I just walked up to a random counter in a department store and bought some makeup. Before then, I had really never worn makeup before, but I feel like I shouldn’t go to work bare faced. At this price point, is there a meaningful difference in quality between different brands of makeup?
Wildkitten
Go to Sephora and try different things – talk to them about what you want. They don’t get a commission and carry a lot of different brands.
