12/25/21 Update: The Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale has started — see our sale roundups and reader favorites included in the sale! Also, sign up for our newsletter to stay on top of all the great sales!
The below content is about the 2010 Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale.
Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Happy Monday! For today’s splurge we thought we’d swing by the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale and see what sort of splurgey deals could be found — and sure enough, there are quite a few high end pieces marked down, including this lovely Zac Posen sweater (which has a matching dress).
Both the sweater and the dress feature sheer cutouts lined in hot pink — which, for the dress, can be a bit much (some of those dip pretty low in the front!) However, for the cardigan — nice!
Love the hip-length sweater, the details around the pockets, and the intriguing way the sweater creates a waist and flattering V shape with the black trim.
Was $850, now $509 at Nordstrom. Zac Posen Belted Intarsia Cardigan

Love the style of the dress and sweater, despise those crazy cut-outs.

This is very Deanna Troy to me.

Hee, now that you’ve pointed it out, I can’t unsee it.

HA! Cheers to the TNG reference. “Make it so, Number One.”

Yes!!
This is just meh to me – I would pick it up if it were Zac Posen for Target @ $20.

Can’t understand what is being shown. Is this a three piece outfit? A two piece outfit? One piece? Regardless, I think that an expensive highly styled cardigan sits in my closet unworn moreso than any other item.
Jay
I don’t understand what this is either. I think the cardigan is shown over the matching dress, but the picture is not very helpful. Not that it matters–I think it looks kind of like a bathrobe.

Gap/Banana/ON give and get is here!
Does anyone have any recommendations of which of their (many) skinny jeans one should choose?
Anonymous
I have Gap Always Skinny. I love them, they are super comfortable, and I get tons of compliments on them. Highly recommend.
anon
I also love the always skinny. I like them better than any of the designer skinny jeans I have. If you order on line, they come in a shorter ankle length which is great for me (I’m 5’4″.) All the washes are good, but I like the dark blue classic wash the best.
K
I second the Always Skinny. I have both the dark wash & stone wash and get compliments on them all the time.
Also, I recently bought a pair of denim leggings (aka “jeggings”) from the Gap and LOVE them. They are so comfortable and flattering and look great with both high heels & boots. It took me a while to get over the idea of wearing a “jegging” (the name makes me cringe) but I am so glad I did. I want to live in those suckers now!
chis
Same – the ON jegging converted me from a hater to a “wear so often i had to buy multiples”
FLLAW
ON “Diva” jeans are great! I buy the darker wash and they are so affordable. I get compliments on them all the time and no one would even guess that they are ON.

I hate Banana skinnies because they have no stretch. Stretch is key in my book.

thanks everyone!

I like the matching dress more than the cardi.

Threadjack (sorry so early): For all of you Big Law Corporettes, do you have any suggestions for a gift for a female attorney who just made partner?
Anonymous
What’s your budget? An engraved paperweight would be very nice and professional. If she’s a close friend, earrings or a bracelet.
anon
If you know that she drinks alcohol, then maybe a really nice bottle of champagne. I’ve done that a few times and it is usually really well-received. If you aren’t sure whether she drinks, then I wouldn’t go this route, though. If you know her well, then you could take her out to a nice restaurant to celebrate. I don’t know about earrings/bracelet suggestion – to me, the level of jewelry appropriate to commemorate a partnership promotion is pretty high, really more the kind of thing to come from a husband/BF.
ahem
I think this cardigan looks like the equivalent to a cheesy car with flames on the side with those arm cutouts. I’d pass if it was $30.

Agree! This is so not chic….

Question about where people belt their dresses, cardigans, etc.
I always belt everything at my natural waist. I’ve been seeing more and more people, though, with belts around what I would say is their lower ribcage, just under their bust. It looks fine from the front, but I think it looks a little strange from the back. Then, I just read in Lucky magazine that this is where you SHOULD belt your sweaters, jackets, and dresses – right under the bust, because that is actually the narrowest part of your torso. On me that’s not true – I am curvy and have a small waist compared to how wide my shoulders are and how big my hips are. I tried it this morning and on me – since I am short-waisted anyway – it looked odd. Where does everyone else put their belts? At your waist or your “high waist”?
Another Sarah
I always thought your natural waist was the narrowest part of your torso. I have a longer torso, so mine is more mid-way between the bottom of my bra and the top of a swimsuit bottom. I mean yeah, it’s higher than the “waist” of my pants (which hit me around my hips, right where my belly button is). If I were to wear a belt over a sweater, it would be at the narrowest part of my waist, not down by my belly-button. It woudn’t stay closed otherwise…
Did “high-waist” pants exist before “low-waist” pants existed? Or in he era before “low-rise” anything, did all pants and skirts come up to your natural waist? I remember when I first went suit shopping with my mom in jr. high, I complained about the suit pants being up so high and my mom said, “Sarah, that’s how it’s always been.” Meh?
K
I have a long torso and I belt a lot of cardigans/dresses/etc. It looks most flattering on me if I belt the narrowest part of my body, which is about halfway between the waist of my pants & my bust. I have also always considered the narrowest part of your body to be your “natural waist” as well.
I say to just go with what looks best on you, personally. Every woman’s body is different.
MelD
I have a long waist and will only belt higher up if I’m wearing a cardigan over a dress with an empire waist. Otherwise it just looks ridiculous to belt that high when my torso is so long. For me, the belt usually goes about 1-2″ above my belly button while most of my pants tend to fall about 1-2″ below.
I had a teacher in HS who always did the belting you mentioned. She had a short torso and large chest and looked like she had no waist whatsoever. The look created an unattractive looking uniboob. I can’t imagine that is a look that works for anyone!
Anonymous Poser
With my large bust, I would look like a cartoon character if I put a belt on right under my bust.
kellyn
Agreed, same here.
I just wish there was a nice way to explain to my mother and all her friends that belting at your hips when you’ve got a large bust (or even a small one), and any semblance of a pooch is disastrous. Move the belt up, mom!

Threadjack: I have a very long body. As a result, I often have trouble getting blouses that don’t come out of my skirt when I lean over or stretch for something. I am also very petite, and am only a 34A.
Is there anywhere I can find a supply of silk blouses that are extra long? All of the blouses I have found are meant for tiny women or 15 year old girls. I would prefer 100% silk with pastel colors, but will settle for a silk mix.
dd
don’t know the answer to that one, but if you find something, let us know!
Lawdy
I have a tall-sized silk blend top from Banana Republic that has lower armholes and a longer length so that it doesn’t come untucked. I wore it the other day and it felt *great* to have something fit so nicely. I wish everything came with a “tall” option. You can try Gap and BR, look under their women’s tall sizes to see if they have anything in silk or a blend. I bought mine more than a year ago but perhaps they still have something similar?
