Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We're loving this sophisticated sheath dress from Tory Burch, available for presale at Nordstrom's. We love the shape — the slight flaring at the knees is sure to be flattering, and the folds at the neck give it a more unusual, lux look than your regular v-neck or scoop neck. It's $395 at Nordstrom. 1. Okay, I just realized after going to the Nordstrom site and zooming in on the photo that the model is wearing gold shoes; till doing that, I had been thinking she was wearing beige/nude (maybe beige/nude patent) heels with a black dress, which raises a question I have had (and I think I may know the answer to . . . .): when, if ever, is it appropriate to wear nude shoes with black? Stay with me here. There is a partner at my firm who always wears nude sling backs (with pantyhose) with a certain black skirt suit she wears. I have seen her possessing and wearing black heels, so I am not sure what is up. It’s not a look I hate but it intrigues me. In my head, I equate it with Suzanne Somers, who I remember reading circa 1990 liked to wear nude heels with everything to “make her legs look longer.” And indeed, she did always seem to sport nude heels in the 1990s no matter what color she was wearing (she may still be up to this: http://www.contactmusic.com/news.nsf/story/somers-encourages-applegate-to-take-time-with-cancer-treatment_1077064).

Anyhow, when I saw this pic this morning on Corporette, I thought the model was wearing a black dress with nude shoes, which raises the questions: would anyone do that? If so, when?

The dress seems cute, by the way. I have such a hard time seeing detail in black clothes on the Internet that I always buy them in person.

    1. I recently purchased a lovely shift dress from Bluesuits. I am currently in transition but needed a dress that looked great and presented a professional image. It’s great for the summer and I can wear it year round with a jacket or sweater. It’s the one on the left in a navy pinstripe and knee length. I received many compliments on it. It was a great investment.

  2. dress is nice!

AC, I like nude heels with black (though not with hose – I don’t think I even own any hose anymore). I think it can be a fresher look than the usual black/black, which sometimes can look a little too formal or matchy, depending on the occassion.

    1. Funny, I actually noticed a woman in my office last week wearing a black dress with nude heels and I really liked her look. I remembered the fact about nude shoes making your legs look longer–hers looked pretty long so maybe it’s true!

    2. This dress is very pretty, but I feel like I’d like it better in a color. It seems like the nice detailing is lost in the black.

I’m not particularly a fan of black heels with black suits/dresses. I feel like it’s possible to have too much black and prefer another color shoes to add contrast. Beige/nude is a nice way to give a black suit a more summery look.

  3. Zoikes! Just what I need to make one (already largish) breast look bigger than the other.

  4. I love nude heels with dark dresses! I have an eggplant dress that just begs for my nude heels.

But I do think nude heels need to be retired when the rest of the warmer-weather clothes get stored. Am I the only one who feels that way?

  5. Tory Burch’s dresses usually fit really well.

And absolutely yes, nude heels with a black skirt, but retired when the weather requires leg coverage – be it tights, hose or trousers.

  6. A very tasteful girlfriend’s even more tasteful and stylish mother,
North Shore Chicago, told me the rule “shoes darker than hemline” back in the 80s. I have found it tends to make very balanced-looking ensembles. One didn’t wear black hemlines in nude heel weather in her day, so that wasn’t an issue.

I am tall, so I prefer the smaller feet of a darker shoe to the longer leg, anyway.
Bright colored shoes–red!—with black are nice….

  7. I’m thinking about wearing nude heels with a black sheath and jacket combo tomorrow, but wondering if it will make me feel, well, nude. I have to speak in front of a bunch of people and it’s probably not the time to try out new fashion trends.

Love the dress. Love Tory Burch. Also love Mr. housecounsel, who will probably divorce me if I spend another dime on clothing.
