For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
Oooh – the Nordstrom Half-Yearly sale has just started! I'll be poking through the sale selection and picking out some favorites — but in the meantime, this lovely deconstructed suit from Akris is among the new markdowns. I like the I like the patterned tricot, and I always think piping in the front of pants adds more polish.
(This pretty blue blazer is also part of the sale, but be warned — the matching dress has a slit to mid-thigh, which for me makes it a no. You will also be shocked to discover that this lobster bolero is among the new markdowns, which I think is only showing up in my “recommended for you” items because Kate and I had a fun WTF exchange about it.)
The blazer is $774, and the pants are $297, both marked down 40%.

I just had an interesting conversation with a coworker and I’m curious what you intelligent ladies think. So we were talking about American Idol and one of the contestants (who I’m not going to name so his internet fans don’t come fight us here) was removed from the show, near the end, because a picture of him surfaced sitting w/ someone with a KKK hat/mask on.
I thought Idol did the right thing just booting him off and not giving him a further platform. My coworker agreed that he should face consequences but thought it would be a better punishment to be voted off by the viewers in the next round.
However, there is no guarantee America would do that and there are probably some racists that would vote for him just to make a point. Coworker thinks just kicking him off lets his supporters blame the liberal media instead of the kid facing his consequences of going from highly popular to not.
So, for the purposes of this discussion let’s not debate whether the offense was one that deserves punishment or not. Let’s assume it is. Is the harsher punishment just booting him off the show or him getting voted off (assuming America did that) the next round?
anonymous
I wouldn’t trust America to vote him off. I think it was right to boot him off the show.
Anonymous
Obviously, they had to kick him off.
(Also, am I the only one that didn’t realize that this show was still on or that people still bothered to vote for things like this?)
Anon
Ha! I don’t vote. I watch (more like listen to) it (and The Voice) on demand via Hulu while I’m on the treadmill or doing monotonous work like filing emails or doing a doc review. It’s background music for me essentially.

I think the flaw in the logic is to assume that there is any procedure that his supporters find acceptable. Whether the producers boot him off the show or the viewers vote him off, it will be decried as cancel culture either way.
Anon
OP here – excellent point!
anon
Kicking off the show more immediately stops his free publicity (though he’ll get 15 more minutes while the news cycle reports him being removed). Keeping him on the show to let the voting viewers allows him to continue in the lime light.
Removing someone from a show may have more negative consequences to their professional or other aspirations than getting voted off a show.

I think that we live in an environment where people are for whatever the “other side” is against and spite motivates so much behavior. I would think there is a better than average chance he wins the whole thing (look at what happened with Morgan Wallen).

+1. I’m not familiar with this situation, but I could easily see such “voting” going viral on OAN etc. with him winning and becoming a white supremacist pop star with a brand built on victimhood.
Anon
I had to laugh at the people defending him because he was just 12 years old in the photo. Isn’t he 14 on the show? So, it was two years ago.
Anon
Are we still pretending that votes for reality show contestants are actually counted? That’s a farce. Of course you yank them immediately.

I find it incredibly refreshing that I hadn’t heard about this at all until reading it from you just now.
Anon
I’m glad it didn’t get him a bunch of mainstream publicity.

In the same vein I am wondering what Bravo will do with Kam Wescott who was openly racist toward new cast member Dr. Tiffany Moon, during dining, doubling down at the reunion, and tripling down on Twitter after the reunion was aired. It was obvious enough that Bravo had to issue a statement that they don’t support racism and that they do support the AAPI community.
Do they keep Kam on because she represents the reality of a large segment of white elites in Dallas? Or do you stop giving her any airtime at all?
(The racist things she did – compared chicken feet dim sum to dog food (unfavorably); told Dr Moon she was being racist for impersonating her own mom with a Chinese accent; accused Dr Moon of being racist against white people. Her husband and her husband’s brother booth took to Twitter to try to get her fired, one comparing Dr Moon to Hitler)
I thought Kam Wescott should have gotten the boot that day, but I’m sure Bravo is sitting back trying to figure out how they can maximize ratings.

Has anyone done Fraxel? I have a friend with gorgeous skin who swears by it and another beauty person in my life who said it can be very risky. I feel like we have talked about botox a lot here but I cant recall any Fraxel discussions. Of course, I may have just missed them. In any case, would love to hear some unbiased thoughts.

you may already have done this, but check out the real self s*te. It looks like 64% of people thought it was “worth it” which doesn’t seem super high to me. you can sort by similar procedures and see their reviews, too.

Are you talking about a full laser resurfacing? I haven’t done it to my whole face but a plastic surgeon who basically botched a mole removal leaving a scar offered it to me on the scar area, gratis. It did nothing. My scar looked a lot like an acne scar, and honestly it still does.
I have had candela v beam laser treatments for broken capillaries and redness, and that works, but for me with very fair and thin skin, there is a lot of down time due to bruising – upwards of three weeks. It’s hard to cover and basically not worth it for me to do further treatments.

Interim position
I posted recently about having to confirm interest in a job I interviewed for but was not sure about because they seemed reluctant to allow a mix of remote work and in office presence. I got great advice from the posters here–I just wrote back and said “yes I’m interested”. Well, today I was offered the job by email, the strange thing is they ask for confirmation that I am accepting the position by email. I say strange because for all jobs I have had no one has ever asked me to accept a position by email which does not list anything including start date, salary i.e. not even a contract in writing. Even though this is a temporary contract of a few months I plan on asking for clarification on certain aspects of the job e.g. salary and to clarify whether the hybrid remote work + in office presence is possible. I am not sure how to word an email to negotiate any of this, and I am not even sure email is the best way to communicate. I have always done this sort of thing by video call since I interviewed for my last two jobs from a distance. Should I try and draft an email to ask these questions or should I ask them for a video-call, there are more specific details I need on how the work will be done, what equipment will be used etc before committing to anything. Advice?
Cat
Yikes!
I would write back and say “before we get to formal acceptance, there are some details outstanding, such as proposed compensation, location, start date/term, etc. Could we arrange a call to go through these?”

Interim position
OP here: Thanks for this. Another poster here had suggested staying in an AirBNB temporarily for the portion of the work that requires physical presence and ask to work remotely for the report writing, data analysis part of the work. I had already looked at costs for approximately a month at the work location and it is equivalent to a month’s rent for my current apartment or more. I have not negotiated a remote work contract before so would appreciate insight from those who have. Should I ask if they can pay or advance funds for this sort of thing? Or should I negotiate the salary only and assume the costs of such a stay provided the rest of the work is remote? Making regular trips to check in at the office once a week as I initially thought would be expensive–it requires booking train tickets for that particular route costs can be high (I am in Europe)
Anonymous
Idk why you think this job is an option. Very clearly it is not for you?
Anon
+1 I think OP is going to burn a bridge here because from her original post it sounds like they were very clear about it not being remote and she seems very clear about not being able to work in person.
Anonymous
“Hi! Please let me know when you’re available for a call to discuss.”
OP
A friend of mine had this happen with a pretty reputable law firm as well. She just said “pending confirmation of X terms in the offer letter, I am excited to accept the offer.” Apparently, they needed the *conditional* acceptance part to start running the background check and putting together the formal offer letter.
If you haven’t discussed the actual terms of comp/benefits/start date, I would suggest having the call and then memorializing the call with the email response above. Either way, you want to make sure you actual get a written offer letter.
anonshmanon
Something this can also happen in government. To get you the official offer, they need to jump through hoops, so they want your informal (unenforceable) promise that you will accept the offer before they start on the process. However, the cases I know set up a phone call and share salary and benefits before asking your acceptance.
Anon
The script from the first commentor is good but I remember you writing about this job and want to reflect back on what you wrote then. Isn’t the job in a different location – and you didn’t want to move there? You were feeling pressure to accept because of networking reasons, not for the job itself? My impression from the info you have given is this might be a shady and/or toxic situation. Give yourself the permission to not accept bad jobs.
Anon
I don’t recall there being anything to indicate shady or toxic, it’s just not located where OP lives and OP is not moving.
Cat
Yeah I remember that too. It seems like a bizarre hiring process to me and I think that’s why many of us said “indicate you’re still interested” – because there wasn’t a clear line in the sand about whether remote work for part of it would truly be unacceptable.
If that’s the case after this conversation I don’t think bowing out graciously is a reputation ruiner…
Cassandra
It would take me about 20 minutes to sew the slit in that skirt together at the top so that it’s just a little five inch slit at the hem. I am sure any competent seamstress could do the same.
Anonymous
Even though it is made of cashmere? The dress as presented looks insane with the staid (but lovely) blazer.
Anonymous
I see now that the dress is wool crepe, just the jacket is cashmere.
Anonymous
It appears to be a cutout, not merely a slit. Wouldn’t there be pulling on the fabric in a way that would affect fit?
Anon
+1 I don’t think you could sew up that slit and still be able to walk.
Anonymous
I’m not OP but a fellow sewer and it does not appear to be a cut out, just a normal slit. Given this is a high end garment it probably has large seam allowances too which would make the alteration even simpler.
Anonymous
I think a back slit would be better on this dress, and there is a seam that could be opened to make a slit.
Anonymous
I didn’t realize Akris Punto had started making garments with polyester, shame. Price doesn’t even mean quality anymore.
Anon
I know Akris is kind of the be all and end all for high end workwear but I find this suit aggressively ugly. The color, the fit and length of the blazer, the patch pockets, the leg pleating. It’s hideous. I wouldn’t consider this at any price point.
Anon
Concur. It’s not even flattering on the model.
