Suit of the Week: Armani Collezioni

Armani Featherweight Wool SuitFor busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. We're still working on our Nordstrom sale roundup, but in the meantime… I fell in love with this dress and blazer combo when I first saw it a week or so ago — it looks so classic, yet feminine. Love. The jacket (Armani Collezioni Two Button Featherweight Wool Jacket) is $1245, the pants (Armani Collezioni Straight Leg Featherweight Wool Pants) is $595, and the dress (Armani Collezioni Featherweight Wool Dress) is $995. On the more affordable side of things, here's another lightweight wool navy suit: blazer, pants, and sheath dress. Similarly, here's a plus size version: blazer, pants, and pencil skirt. 1. Given the fashion industry’s habits, there probably is some Photoshopping involved, but I think you make a good point about being bowlegged. I have pretty hearty upper thighs and still have a thigh gap because I’m bowlegged. It’s such a ridiculous concept that doesn’t even mean anything.

      1. Not the same and not appropriate.

Other posters were commenting on the ridiculous photo shopping (appropriate), not the model’s body or facial features (inappropriate).

  1. I’m trying to avoid paying for professional photographs for our Christmas cards. Is there a way for us to take a family picture (on our nice DSLR) and then pay someone just to make it look better in Photoshop with lighting and brightness, etc? I was thinking maybe Task Rabbit. Does anybody have any suggestions? Especially if you have a specific person who has done this for you in the past.

    1. Have you considered using Lightroom and perhaps doing it yourself? It’s a similar Adobe product, but I think it’s a bit easier for a layperson to tinker around and adjust images (coming from someone who knows very little about how to use Lightroom and absolutely nothing about Photoshop).

    2. I think if you google Rembrandt lighting (2 sources) you can get some beautiful results on your own.

Also, going with a black and white picture what is closely cropped to the faces can often be beautiful (shutterfly gives you this option and also some “soft filter” effects).

You may not need a pro, just a well-composed shot.

      1. Thanks for the suggestions, but this is really something I’d rather outsource. I am so not confident in my abilities that I always freeze when it comes to doing it myself.

    3. I’m sure there is a way to get someone to do that, but have you considered just hiring an inexpensive photographer? There are tons of people trying to break into the business who would be happy to take your family photos for $50 or so, assuming you live in a metro area. Try posting on Craigslist. You’ll get a better photo, and many of them.

    4. Have you considered just sending out a snapshot? Or are you in fact a Kardashian?

    5. There is really no way to make a bad picture look like a good picture by editing it.

        1. Which is one but not the only reason why paying someone to Photoshop will probably end up costing you nearly as much as a simple shoot. Unless you’re getting an art undergrad to do it. But agreed, a bad picture will still look bad.

    6. You can’t make a bad picture good but you can make a good picture better or great!

I did this a few years ago with someone from a blog I used to read…she was breaking into the photography business and offered editing services for $10/photo for basic retouching. I’m sure someone who knows how to open Photoshop app can do it in 10 minutes, but I wanted to outsource it and frankly for the price it was exactly what I wanted. It took my favorite wedding picture from good to awesome.

So sorry, I can’t help you with a current recommendation but yes, this is something you can do. If you do find someone current that you can recommend, please do post.

    7. I can do it if you like. I’m between jobs right now. I’m an amateur but spent 3 years in photo school so I know a thing or two about photoshop. Email me if you like and we can discuss: bunnihaidar (at) gmail (dot) com.
However, I agree with those who said that photoshop will not make a bad picture into a good picture. I can do colour correction, contrast, but things like getting the lighting and depth of field you want are better done in camera.

  2. This is gorgeous, though I wonder how the dress would lay on my hips. The cheaper version just isn’t the same!

    1. I think that there is some crazy photoshopping going on in that pants picture.

p.s., I love the other dress (there is another featherweight wool dress shown on the dress link) sooo much better.

    2. Yay! I love Armani!

As for the OP, if you have either hip’s or a tuchus (a shelf, dad says) this will fit fine. He probabley does not know for sure, but Dad always says that dresses and pant’s fit me fine b/c of my big tuchus (a/k/a “shelf”). He seems to have forgotten that my tuchus is now the same size as Rosa — almost– but still, I do NOT have the same tuchus I had when I was dateing Alan. Alan for some reason always liked my tuchus, so I never even tried to loose weight back there, but now that I am doeing 10000+ steps / day, Alan would probabley not even recognize my tuchus, if I EVER agreed to let him see it — which I would NOT. FOOEY on him! No man will see my tuchus without a VERY serious relationship. Not Noah, David or anyone! DOUBEL FOOEY on men that want my tuchus without the rest of me! FOOEY!

  3. Jacket and dress are gorgeous. Can’t tell if I like the pants because of the crazy photoshop job. Although, looking at the dress photo, maybe she is that bow-legged and it’s not really photoshopped at all…

  4. OK — trying again:

Can anyone recommend a slip that works with the Gemma dress? It is clingy to tights and yet all of the slips I’m seeing seem to be too short (so cling factor exists below the slip). Is there something you could post a link for that works for you with this dress? Thanks!

  5. Kat the link for the Kate Spade sale isn’t working – it’s giving me an error 404
