For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional. Aaaaah – I'm in love with this wool stretch suit, which is the rare suit that is both interesting as well as totally appropriate for even the most conservative of occasions. I love the collarless blazer, which looks great cinched (it's styled with this belt), or by itself — and the pencil skirt is about as classic as it gets. Although pinstriping isn't exactly wild and crazy stuff, I'm excited to see that the blazer's lining has just a teensy bit of personality too. Lovely. The jacket (Wool Stretch Jacket) is $348, and the skirt (Wool Stretch Skirt) is $148. (Both pieces were available in sizes 0-14 yesterday, but for the skirt a lot of sizes are gone — consider calling your local store if you can't find your size online.) OK, that’s weird, since this suit jacket was mentioned in the comments this morning! (Yes, I know, Kat writes her posts in advance, so it’s just an odd coincidence).
Bewitched
Also, this seems like the perfect suit for folks (like me) who think that the quality at BR, AT and the like have gone down. Yes, likely double the price of a suit there, but $500 seems like a reasonable price point for a higher quality, investment type suit. Good choice!
bridget
My thoughts exactly! I am looking for a classic, midrange suit, and AT and BR don’t do that anymore.

Ha, I mentioned the jacket this morning! I think I’m going to have to spring for this one. I have a corporate 15% discount and a $60 gift card that I’ve been trying to find a purpose for. My last simple black skirt suit is now 9-yrs old (sigh) and though holding up well, probably ready to be replaced.
Ellen
I agree this is loveley. And your so lucky to have a discount plus a gift card. Dad took away my L&T card, but not my AMEX, so I can always say I needed it (with the manageing partner’s approval) and get a work discount. Life is VERY unfair when your own father stops you from dressing aprpriately for work. FOOEY! If I dress sloppey, there is NO way I will find a man to MARRY me. DOUBEL FOOEY!

That belt is fantastic.

Sigh. If only it wasn’t $250….

I didn’t realize it doesn’t come w/ the suit. Totally makes it. Loooove.

I. Love. This. Suit. Especially belted! *swoons*
Lingerie
Where is your favorite place to buy special lingerie? I’m just so sick of VS (I keep getting blocked from posting, not sure if it was because I was spelling out that store’s full name). I prefer to spend $100 or less on a set but am flexible. Any hidden gems?
Anondc
I recommend Anthropologie, each piece ranges from around 40-70 so which is pretty much in your price range – a little over depending on what you buy and are really beautifully designed. A lot of their pieces from legit designers like Stella McCartney and Calvin Klein or less known smaller fashion houses.
Then there are always typical department stores like Nordstrom and Lord & Taylor – Im sure they have good options there too. If you wanted to expand your budget I would definitely go with Agent Provocateur, that would be my dream go to brand if I was wealthy and not an entry level 20-something!

Journelle

Asos or Fig Leaves! Much better selection, and better quality than VS. Free or very low price shipping to the US. I buy everything from them now.

Love this suit!

I’ve tried to write a post about undergarments at least 4 times. Is it that I’m using the l-word???
Anyways, where is your favorite place to buy “special undergarments”? I’m just so sick of Victoria’s Secret. I prefer to spend $100 or less on a set but am flexible. Any hidden gems?

Journelle is nice, they’re based in NYC and offer same day courier service inthe city or pickup at their local stores.

All 4 were held by spam for some reason (not sure why — we only check spam we’re looking for something specific). I approved one and deleted the rest.

Oh, and if you’re in NYC go to La Petite Coquette on University – love their stuff; Century 21 has also had some great deals occasionally on La Perla. Online I buy a lot of my stuff from Bare Necessities, Amazon, or Nordstrom.

Kat, isn’t it nice that you could just write Coqu*tt* without the asterisks? Is there a reason that all *tt* words are moderated?

Has anyone done meal replacement shakes?
I have a few friends who sell Isagenix, and it seems incredibly expensive. Is there a GNC version that is as good?
I have found with working full time (plus) and 2 elementary aged kids, I just don’t have it in me to do the cooking and shopping it takes to lose the last 10 lbs I have to lose. When I cut carbs out completely, I lose the weight but I am CRABBY and I can’t maintain it. I am not kidding myself, I don’t think I’ll be able to keep using shakes forever either but wondering if it will help.
I work out 2-3 times a week (combo of running, Core Power, and Orange Theory).
Any ideas?
Smoothie packs
Here’s my idea: smoothie packs
On a weekend, buy several bags of frozen fruit (I like berries), a few bunches of bananas, a few giant clamshells of spinach, and quart-size Ziploc freezer bags. Also buy your favorite brand of protein powder.
Put the following into each Ziploc bag: 1 cup frozen berries, anywhere from 1/2 to a whole banana broken into inch-size chunks, and 2 cups of spinach. Seal (remove the air) and freeze.
When you need a quick meal, add the contents of one Ziploc, a serving of protein powder, and about 16oz of water to a blender. Optional: a tablespoon of chia seeds, a tablespoon of nut butter, cinnamon, etc. Blend. Drink.
Making the packets will take you less than 30 minutes to make about 3 weeks worth. MUCH healthier than pre-made meal replacements shakes.
Meg Murry
FYI, if you don’t have a super powerful blender, you get way better results if you blend just the greens and a liquid (water, milk, whatever you prefer) first, and only add the berries and banana once the spinach is completely blended. And I hate to say Daphne Oz/Dr. Oz are right, but their suggestion of adding psyllium husk to smoothies does help thicken them up and add a good dose of fiber to keep you feeling fuller – it’s not a placebo effect for me, I can tell which days I’ve added it and which days I’ve forgotten.
Another trick: 2 teaspoons of almond butter plus a cup of water is the same nutritional content than the brand of almond milk I was buying, similar taste, and cost effective, plus it doesn’t go bad if I don’t use it immediately on opening.
But to answer the original question – I like making smoothies too, but I hate cleaning up the blender and cups and overall general mess I make with them. It also doesn’t work well in my time schedule – I can’t make them in the morning unless I give them to my kids too, who make a mess, and I’m not hauling a blender to work to make them at lunch (and I don’t think my coworkers would appreciate it).
I’ve used Slim Fast during the worst of my crunch times at work as a “well, at least it’s a better choice than fast food” option. I didn’t lose weight (probably because it didn’t stick with me all that well and I over ate the next meal) but at least I didn’t gain weight from having food from the drive through 2-3 times a day which would have been the alternative.
The other thing I’ve done with moderate success when I’m disciplined is to pack smaller lunches, and then have baby carrots and plain oatmeal on hand. That way, if I’m actually hungry, I can snack on those – and if I’m not hungry enough to eat carrots or oatmeal, I’m probably not really hungry, I’m probably just bored or only a tiny bit hungry. And along the same lines as mentioned above, if I can be disciplined enough to drink fiber (either psyllium husk in Emergency-C or the Metamucil with psyllium husk, because I am turning into my grandmother) about an hour before lunchtime, I usually am more satisfied with my smaller lunch.

I am in the middle of trying Isagenix right now. I am not crazy about it and it is very expensive. For regular protein shakes, I like the Syntha 6 brand at vitamin shoppe or Amazon.

10 pounds? Enjoy them. And set an example for your kids that doesn’t include dubious meal replacements.
Excel Geek
You’re so totally right on the example for the kids. I needed to hear that, thanks.

Although, if you want to have healthy smoothies made from real foods, I think that’s fine. We do a lot of spinach/greek yogurt/frozen fruit smoothies for breakfast in our house. Sometimes we use whey protein powder. The kid thinks they are delicious. I’ve thought about bringing them as part of lunch some days.
hoola hoopa
I replaced typical snacks with soy milk. After looking at nutrition facts and cost, I decided that soy milk was pretty much just as good as a ‘protein shake’.
A working mom of three with zero time, and I’ve had luck paying the extra for the ready-t0-eat veggies (baby carrots, snap peas, broccoli florets). I bring that, a rinsed can of beans (seriously… but it’s cheap, easy, and nutritious), and soy milk. I usually eat over time, which helps level things out.

If you’re open to spending the money on Isagenix, are there any options in your city for fresh-made meals that you just heat up in the microwave? My not-all-that-health-conscious city has three different companies offering meals that run about $7-9 for a well-portioned meal of protein and veggies (and some grains depending on the dish). I love being able to just grab one out of the fridge and have my meal ready in 2 minutes, and the food is actually better than what I would cook for myself in a time pinch and living alone and not wanting to put the effort into sides and lots of dirty dishes.
Just an idea. If you happen to be in Texas, I can recommend some specific places :)
padi
I tried the 100% Food meal replacements. The 600 calorie bottle was a little too much for me to drink for a meal. The taste is okay, not unlike crunchy pancake batter. I felt full and not tempted to snack all afternoon.
Meg Murry
I tried these once and really didn’t like it. The seeds were just not my thing.
On the other hand, it kind of worked the same way as I mentioned above – if I wasn’t hungry enough to drink that, I guess I’m just not hungry. That worked for a day or two, and then I gave up after a few sips and threw the rest out, then went out and bought some real food.

I have not had meal replacement shakes for losing weight intentionally… I’ve only drank Ensure shakes when I had oral surgery and basically couldn’t eat anything else – or attempts to eat other things were just taking so much time that I just gave up and drank a shake. They were gross and I lost 8 pounds in a week.. Each meal was either a full shake, or half a shake and a small cup of soft food (typically a yogurt or even mashed potatoes…). I did not snack. I had 1 egg custard for breakfast (which is 1 egg, steamed Chinese style). Can’t say this was a healthy way to lose weight though. Interestingly now that I’m eating normally again I’ve kept it off (no snacking, smaller portioned meals 3 times a day, nothing but water after 8pm).
KateMiddletown
I do the soy chocolate WF brand or Plant Fusion vanilla with some PB2 powder if I’m making it a meal replacement.

Just bought this suit today, by coincidence! It is truly fabulous on. Go for it!
BTW, there’s a matching pant, too.
