For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
I am always drawn to a suit with a wide, unusual neckline like this one — even though they often fall into the “desk to dinner” category rather than, say, an “interview or court appearance” kind of thing.
(I'm still drooling over this 2017 version from Theory, to be honest — you can find a ton of versions of it at Poshmark if you're hunting, or this knit version at Theory's outlet.)
Today's gorgeous suit is from Carolina Herrera — I love the loose fit, the slight peplum hem, and the matching straight-legged pants. Love.
The blazer is $2,190, and the pants are $990.

My gratitude journal entry for the day: at an meeting with federal agencies in the PNW about science and tech topics, the senior man leading the meeting basically just introduced the young, female, SME, and then stepped back to take notes and run Teams for her. And I didn’t even notice at the time, but his follow-up notes showed the Q&A was almost entirely women talking, even though attendance was roughly balanced.
Slowly some of the sexist norms are changing!

I love square neck anything and would ordinarily be drooling over this suit but suits just don’t feel like reality to me anymore.
I was on a call yesterday with a group of industry leaders talking about an upcoming conference that used to be in person that is now virtual for the second year in a row. At least half of my industry colleagues said they think it will be years (not year) before we go back to in-person conferences. That is the only place I really wore suits any more, for presenting at conferences. :/
Hildy J.
I literally just thought to myself, $3,000 for a suit, Lordy.
Anon
I feel like my industry will be back early 2022 (January conferences are big things for two overlapping orgs). And in fancy places that are so hard-hit that they will view it as a charitable contribution (Vegas, y’all!). FWIW, I will be there with them. BUT none of my suits fit –surely I can lose 10 pounds in 10 months (you’d think, but 5 of that was gained in 2021 when my goal was to lose the 5 pounds I’d gained in 2020). UGH!
Anon
What does it say about us that (in my city, at least, and my state) I was a Day 1 essential worker, allowed to leave my house during last spring’s lockdown and physically be at work, and yet am in the “all others” at the bottom of the list to get vaccinated?
For the next pandemic, can we sort of match-up essential workers who we expect / need to be / demand to be out and about with who get actually protected? Or do a bit better?
There is so much nonsense that I am starting to think that CT has it right — KISS and vaccinate by age. The cutting in line by categories (that are similar to other categories (e.g., day care workers who have been working all this time not getting vaccinated vs teachers who have been working remotely who are prioritized). Everything is political.
Anon
I feel you. I’m high risk but my illness is unusual and not on the Official List of high risk conditions for my state, so I’m SOL until my age group is called.
Anonymous
Same – but not for lack of worry about severity. It’s just a rare condition we have bad data on.
PolyD
I don’t normally advocate trying to game COVID appointments (and I don’t really consider what I am going to say to be “gaming”) but could you select one of the listed high risk conditions that is similar to what you have? When you get the official call and they ask if you have that condition, you could truthfully say, My condition is not listed, it is similar to this listed condition and puts me at high risk for COVID complications.
I mean, it’s a new disease so they’re not going to be able to list every condition that puts one at higher risk for severe COVID. I don’t think the goal of the list is to exclude people who are genuinely at risk but their disease is too rare to make the official list.
Anon
+1. Also, I’m not sure how much “screening” they’re doing to prove that people really have the conditions. At least in my area, it sounds like the honor system. I don’t think doctors are taking time to write notes for everyone.
Anonymous
I’m Anonymous at 3:16 and I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that. Not only could it hurt me if the state decides to crack down on fraud, I want to respect the system that’s in place because while imperfect, it does seem to be designed with at least some equity in mind.
Anon
The state will not be cracking down on fraud. It’s your call. The kind of fraud I imagine would be actionable would be a worker taking pallets of vaccines and selling them on the black market or something like that. Not a high-risk person whose condition can’t be neatly entered into one of the existing categories.
Anon
“When you get the official call . . .” LOL. This is not a thing in my state. That call is NOT coming for months, even for those in their eighties and nineties. The only way to get an appointment is to spend literally hours a day online (yeah, the 90 year olds tend to excel at this) or waiting on hold online to learn there are no available appointments. Wash, rinse, repeat. I have managed to get appointments for 4 at risk individuals since the vaccines were released, but literally none has been a result of the so-called registry in which everyone enrolled on the first day.
Anon
Anon at 3:07, apologies if you’ve already done this, but if you haven’t, it’s worth talking with your doc. My state also has an official list of highest risk conditions, but there’s an additional category of “your doc thinks Covid will kill you or get scary close to killing you.”
During a routine appointment, I was celebrating not being in the highest priority group, and my doc told me, actually, I was, under that last category. I wouldn’t have thought to call and ask, but I’m glad I know. I really, really wish my health was such that I wasn’t in that group, though.
Anon
Thanks. I wrote to my doc through their message portal asking to be considered high risk, and she sent me back a form letter about the covid priority list, which I already knew. Very frustrating. So I made an appointment with her, which feels wasteful and like unnecessary but I’m hoping she will actually listen to me if I see her face to face.
PolyD
If your doctor isn’t being helpful, I would absolutely self-report myself as being in one of the risk categories. If you are screened, you can be truthful with the screener that your condition isn’t on the official list, but it does likely raise your risk. To the best of your knowledge, you should be in a prioritized group.
I wouldn’t call that fraud at all, I would call it interpretation. But then I filled out a low level security clearance form wrong and had to correct several things that came up during my interview with the FBI and nothing bad happened so maybe my risk tolerance for something like this is a little higher.
Anon
I think it is so hard to weight risks that aren’t age-related. Like a neighboring state is vaccinating all smokers. I don’t smoke today. Maybe I should start?
Anon
I’ve considered gaining weight! I’m overweight but not BMI of 40
Anon
I’m trying to lose weight and am 10 pounds heavier for it — I may be there before my age group gets there ;(
Anon
I know you’re joking. I’m not surprised there’s resentment towards smokers for getting ahead for something that’s “their fault”, but they really are at very high risk.
Anon
I get that, but I still feel like if should be age-qualified. Like if you are currently vaccinating 65+ (our state right now), maybe let in smokers if they are 50+ (but not a 20 YO smoker who has only smoked a little while)? It makes as much sense as a smoker who has smoked for a day (potentially me).
My husband is overweight, over 50 and smokes the occasional cigar (which we disclose to our life insurance people under “tobacco use”). Is he a smoker?
Anon
In my opinion, he’s a smoker
Anonymous
Same for both me and my husband. He has a severe immune system condition but because it isn’t tied to an organ transplant it’s like it doesn’t exist. I’m at a high risk for stroke following past brain hemorrhages even though I’m only 47. Same. Meanwhile, a healthy and younger friend from college went to another state and was vaccinated because she is a sales person calling on docs (99% by phone) and has lived her best life the whole year eating in restaurants, doing air travel for vacations, hosting parties, etc. I try to remind myself she’ll be less of a spreader. I don’t mind waiting behind seniors or others with medical conditions. But some of this seems just so unfair when the stakes are so different.
Anon
My 30 year old cousin was living abroad, came home, immediately got a job teaching in a private religious school, and got vaccinated in January. To be fair, she would have gotten vaccinated quickly in the country she was living in because it’s the country with the best vaccination system. But it’s still surprising how quickly she was able to get it.
Anon
My teenage daughter has two friends who have received the vaccine – one for working part time in the grocery store (and she quit the day after her first shot) and the second one ??? no idea why. I do know her grandparents are wealthy and politically connected.
Anonymous
Yeah, it’s really inequitable and we’re allowed to be mad about that. I have changed my opinion of a LOT of people and will be ending relationships over this. I don’t have time to be friends with people who are selfish liars and who put others at risk so they don’t have to be alone for even part of the time.
joan wilder
Exactly this. I rationally understand why and, as said this morning, perfect is the enemy of the good but emotionally I am mad. My mother finally got an appointment but her 24/7 live-in carer was in a “rules” grey zone and couldn’t get vaccinated (though she had to take parent to the appointment). Now the carer finally has one this week (hooray) and because my parent is not well enough to be left alone, she has to be taken back out and along with the carer when she gets vaccinated. This system is so aggravating.
Dallas Anon
my rare condition isn’t on the official list either but my specialist who is associated with a hospital system just put me on the hospital’s list and I was vaccinated less than a month later. can your specialist do something like that?
Anon
If you have a condition that makes you vulnerable and it’s not on the “official list”, get a doctor’s note and sign up for a vaccine. If you’re an actual essential worker (lots of day to day close contact with non household members) and don’t qualify on the official list, get a doctor’s note. I promise you, the vaccinators are not looking that hard at how you’re qualified and they’re not going to question a doctor’s note. They really don’t care, they are volunteers largely, or nurses who are already tired. Just find a way to get your vaccine. In Texas, they are using the honor system of self-reported vulnerability to covid. I have certain health factors that put me in the early vaccination category (just over the 30 bmi that qualifies – so slightly overweight not obese – and a severe but currently well managed lung disease), and not a single soul asked me for proof of being in the vaccination categories.

Thank you to Senior Attorney for that satisficers vs maximizers link earlier! I had never seen those decision-making styles distilled quite that way and it’s exactly at the heart of my frustration with DH (and his with me) for furnishing our house. I am a total satisficer — this looks good enough, meets our criteria, let’s buy it and be done with this step. He is a complete maximizer and wants to be absolutely sure that he has surveyed the entire landscape and is getting the best deal. The one time he tried to stop the search early, the purchase turned out to be not quite right so he is loathe to do that again. Now accepting any suggestions for how to triage this and work together. (I will admit that his selections are better than mine, but probably not better enough to justify the time and effort in my view.)
Anon
i am a maximizer – how do i learn how to be more satisfied with my decisions?
Anonymous
I was a maximizer that became a satisfies her. What worked for me was a life changing situation tied to a family members health that’s ongoing. That has a way of really shaking out your priorities, and it turned out the perfect light fixture wasn’t it.

This is so true.
Senior Attorney
Ha! Isn’t that a fun concept?
Maybe just leave it to him but see if you can get him to agree to firm deadlines? I feel like that would be the best of all worlds if you are happy with what he picks!
Anon at 3:19 — I can’t put my hands on it right now but I feel like there is research that shows as long as a choice is not a flat-out mistake, people tend to like them more as time goes on. Also, the MOST IMPORTANT THING is to shop shopping once you’ve made a choice! At least, that’s true for me.
This article has some helpful hints down toward the bottom: https://avoidaclaim.com/2017/wellness-balance-are-you-a-maximizer-or-a-satisficer/

My husband and I are satisficers/maximizers on different things, thankfully. I needed to know that I had the perfect three-row vehicle for our family’s needs. (Spoiler: It’s a minivan). He needs to have perfect house fixtures, and will build something himself rather than settle. In each case, the maximizer goes through his or her massive research process, then shows the other the final three or four choices. Maybe your husband can present you with a few options on the major home furnishings (e.g. couch, dining room table) while you pick out the suitable items in the minor categories (e.g. entry hall table, book shelves)?
Anonymous
OMG. Do you live with my husband? Does he have secret second family?
We have had the same AWFUL bar stools for 5 years because the three different ones i have ordered / brought home were not good enough. and yet – does he go shopping???
I admit that none of the ones i picked were awesome – but as least they weren’t objectively uncomfortable (too high for current counter)

Retirement gift ideas for dad? I was going to get him an experience gift, but I can’t do that right now with Covid. I can’t think of an equally nice “item” gift. He doesn’t drink alcohol. I feel bad that his retirement ended up being so anti-climatic after 28 years at the same company…no work party, no family party…so I want to get him something nice to open. All I can think of is a watch.
Anon
I’ll add what his gift was supposed to be…he is an amazing piano player in his personal time, so I was going to purchase time for him in a recording studio, which he would have loved. I’m going to do that another time.
BB
So this might be kind of a random thought, but as a mini gift if he’s into building things, there’s a really cool looking Lego piano set that creates a working grand piano with real moving keys, hammers and everything.
Anonymous
Can you get him a cameo with a favorite artist? Or is there a way to do a virtual event with a musician he admires? I work in performing arts and people are getting very creative trying to make money right now.
Anon
I’d give him the recording time with a small physical gift.
Also, do you know that this is even something he would have expected gifts and a party for? I think most new retirees just take a vacation – no cake or party wanted or expected.
Anon
I can’t give him the recording time because the studios in his area aren’t accepting that right now.
Vicky Austin
Could you frame a favorite or special piece of music? Or several, one each for you/the other members of your immediate family? I’ve thought of doing this for my dad – framed copies of the songs my sisters and I chose to dance with him to at our weddings, plus a song that’s special to him and my mom. It’s something to open, and can also serve as a reminder of the experience gift that is hopefully coming sooner rather than later.

Mixed Race Characters?
My kiddo is half Asian half white and is getting to a stage where he likes to imagine himself being the character in the show/movie/book. However, we are struggling to find a show/movie/book that has someone that looks like him. Obviously, lots of mainstream media content has a white protagonist. I was also able to find books with black and latino characters doing cool things. But the Asian kids in those seem to be an afterthought and are never part of the spotlight. Not to mention I have not found anything with a mixed race character that looks like him…
I know it may not be a big deal and we can explain all that to him but it would be good to have one character that is cool and that he can say I look like that person.

Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell
Always Be My Maybe (Netflix)
anne-on
Park is VERY fetishized by Eleanor in the book, in a way it makes sense (midwest, 1980s, etc.) but it wouldn’t be my first choice and I’m disappointed the author hasn’t really been open to feedback about it.
Also I wouldn’t show/give either of those to a young kid, definitely PG-13 content.
Finding Ohana is on Netflix and VERY good, all the main characters are Pacific Islanders, and it is big on embracing your ethnicity/background.
Would he be into Anime? Or K-pop? I’d also maybe look into the Studio Ghibli movies if you haven’t seen them yet.
Anonymous
Rufio from the movie Hook? He was awesome. There was also a movie I forget the name of that featured an Asian tween girl who was into geocaching and lived in Hawaii I think? Only saw the first few minutes but it looked cool. Good luck, I hope you find some great stuff for him!

Finding Ohana! I suggested it above – very good and coming to accept your background is a major theme of the movie.

Anon
Maybe post on the moms site tomorrow. I know it skews younger but this sort of question gets good answers there.
Anon
there are definitely Disney Channel original movies with Asian kids as main characters. Back in the day, one of my favorite shows was Shelby Woo on Nickelodeon which featured an Asian girl. In the Babysitters Club one of the characters is Asian, though a boy might not be as interested in those books
Anonymous
I think there are books out there that you can order, customized with your kid as the main character – am I imagining this? E.g., it’s about them with their name and illustration. When I was little, one of my most treasured gifts was a storybook about me written and illustrated by my artistic uncle. I don’t have that kind of talent, but I’d be happy to buy a child a customized book! Of course there is the bigger issue of representation in books at large, but at least for your purposes OP, maybe a custom book would be fun to explore.
Panda Bear
Ugh, my comment got eaten. I was thinking about options for ordering him a customized book, where he is the main character (am I imagining this? I think it exists). When I was little, my uncle wrote an illustrated a story book featuring me, and it was a treasured possession. I don’t have that talent, but it would fun to order a book like that.

Dragonwings by Laurence Yep? I mean, it’s been at least two decades since I read it but it stuck with me as the few books with a Chinese American male protagonist. Book is set in the late 1890s/early 1900s. It is specifically about Chinese American experience and it was also published before 1980 but maybe somewhere to start or look at Laurence Yep’s backlist?
I also recently came across Tu Books publishing of Lee & Low Books, a publisher dedicated to diverse characters for childrens books, so possibly another place to explore.

Check the measurements for each item and note what the site says about the item’s fit. Their sizing is not entirely consistent but there is good information about it. (e.g, I wanted 2 sweaters, one said it runs large, and I compared measurements and they were substantially different between them, so specific to the item)
I have just purchased one sweater. It is great quality but it turns out the neckline is wrong on me. I am returning. I had some issues with shipping and the automated return process but got great assistance from.customer service each time. I will try again in the future.

I got a long sleeve knit shirt from there a little over a year ago that is super cute, but that stretched out considerably after only a couple of wears. I probably wouldn’t buy anything knit from them again.

Love their silk dresses and shirts.

This does have some serious Dynasty vibes…
