Raise your hands if you (or perhaps someone you love, like a father/brother/husband/son) is getting raw/red hands with all of the handwashing. I tend to be ok because it's totally reflexive for me to put Curél on my hands after I wash my hands — but if that is NOT your habit, we discovered this shielding lotion a few years ago when my eldest son was having some issues with eczema, including dry skin during the winter. We could put some of this on his hands in the morning, before school, and it helped keep moisture in throughout the day — I've since introduced my father to the product and just put it out for my husband. You can get a bottle $9-$35 (with lots of options for 2+ orders) at Amazon; Walgreens and Ace Hardware also have it.

We are moving and need to rent out our home. We started before all this craziness and got lots of interest but no tenant. Now? Crickets. We already put a deposit down on the new place. WWYD?
Anonymous
I don’t think there’s enough info here to give you good answers. It sounds like you’re moving from a home that you own to a place you’re going to rent (“already put a deposit down…”). Is that the case? Is there some kind of circumstance forcing the move (new job, etc.)? Are you moving a short distance (10 min away) or a long one (out of state)?
If so, are you asking if you should NOT move? Are you asking how to get renters? Are you asking something else?
Anon
I know, I will think through and try to post again tomorrow with more detail. Thanks!!
Another anon
My lease would have been up at the end of May and the owner is selling the unit. I’ll either rent or buy, but will move either way. The owner extended the lease until the end of June, but I know that once the movement restrictions can be relaxed a bit, I will need to find a new place stat. I am sure there are many others in the same situation. Hopefully this would translate into renewed interest in your rental in a couple months, if you can wait that long?

That’s actually really helpful, thanks!

If I have to keep working here for the next few months (or longer), I’m going to need a new desk in my home office. I’d really like to spend $400 or less – where would you look for a decent desk? I just have a laptop for now, but I am looking into getting a second monitor as well. I want a computer/executive type desk. I haven’t bought anything from Ikea in a long time – are their products tolerable/usable? I’m open to suggestions as well.
jnon
i got an inexepensive desk from office depot several years ago and it has held up remarkably well- it even moved to our new home. It was very easy to put together and actually even looks good.
Rhody Lawyer
I love, love, love my Ikea desk. It has held up really well for probably 10 years, and it gets a lot of use. Here’s the link: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/p/finnvard-trestle-with-shelf-white-80150095/
It’s definitely not fancy but is a real workhorse. And I think it’s well under $100!

I have the white Hemnes desk with add-on unit from Ikea ($449, but the add-on is not necessary). It’s a great, sturdy desk. The one with 2 drawers and a cabinet on the left. I’ve had it for about 4.5 years now, and it got me through 3L year, bar prep, and work from home since 2016. It’s real wood, and is aging nicely.
The wood is pretty soft, which I found out after I wrote down every possible iteration of my eventual GPA 3L year, and when I lifted the paper realized much of what I wrote had sunk into the desk top. Whoops. You can still almost see the words…it gives the desk character.

WFH with kids -- continued, perhaps indefinitely
Schools in my state cancelled for 2 more months. I will be teaching times tables and doing math; a lot of math. Math is hands-on in our house — I wish my kids could learn from just watching Khan academy videos (but it is like gymnastics — you need to do it). Luckily they are hungry for new books. Let’s see if I can get them.

I am having such a hard time today. I’m not sure why. I’m just sad. I work in K-12 public ed. Everything is moving at warp speed and inevitably, none of it will actually be good enough for students nor parents. I work with my team to create a plan, and then a district or state decision renders that plan useless. I’m in the middle of applying for a fantastic job with another district, and that has (understandably) been delayed but it bums me out and I’m worried I will miss my chance. And then I feel guilty for being sad because my husband and I are so lucky to have salaried positions where we can work safely from home.
anonymouse
That was me yesterday. Your comments on the weekend thread actually gave me some much needed distractions, so thank you for that :)
I think it’s perfectly normal and OK to be struggling with how all the changes COVID-19 has quickly wrought in each of our lives. This is a lot of change, and is upending everyone’s version of normal. I told myself yesterday I am probably going to have down days and up days as I adapt and figure out what the new normal is. I hope you can take some comfort in that: your feelings are fine, and it’s good you have them. I hope you can also take some comfort in the fact that you aren’t alone in this sea of uncertainty.
Very virtual hugs to you. I hope you can plan something nice for yourself at the end of your work day today or spend some quality time with your spouse (and/or family at home). I hope tomorrow is a better day for you!
Elegant Giraffe
This helps. I tend to zoom in on details rather than think big picture. You’re reminding me that just because today is a down day doesn’t mean tomorrow will be also – it will be up and down. I am planning to use some of my very limited flour to make banana bread tonight which will make me happy.

Commiseration. I was already working from home for a few weeks (and am a total homebody) before this all started, and I’m still having a really hard time. I feel like the anxiety around me is palpable. I’m worried about my job, my family’s health, my parents’ retirement, my community businesses, the state economy (heavily reliant on tourism). Just so much.

Today seemed to be the day a lot of folks on my team hit some kind of a wall. Productivity’s been nil and people are signing off early. I think the reality of all this is setting in, not to mention the idea that it may go on much longer than any of us anticipated. My boss is having a rough day and told everyone, today’s goal is to be gentle with ourselves. That’s it, and that’s all. If you can’t do it today, sign off and we’ll pick it up again tomorrow. I found that comforting as there are moments when I am worried about so much all at once that it feels I will suffocate under the weight of it. But I am still here and still breathing and so there is hope. Hugs to you (and all of us).
LSC
My sister is in the same position. She and her team pulled 20 hour days to figure out how to feed kids despite school closures, and then a shelter in place order undid all that work (which is probably for the best, but still…her team is exhausted for naught!). No advice, but you’re not alone. We appreciate your efforts!

I need to replace my disintegrating discontinued yoga pants for the possibility of WFH indefinitely. They are jersey knit, slightly bootcut, low rise Victoria’s Secret yoga pants (not Pink, actual VS brand). Not shiny, mildly stretchy, plain black. (I don’t care for the kind that fit like tights.)
Any similar suggestions appreciated.

No suggestions, but these sound similar to my beloved GapFit pants that they discontinued a while back too. I don’t understand the hate for real yoga pants. Nothing against leggings, but sometimes you need a non-tights alternative!!

I’m sitting in one of these in my home office right now! The rolling one is way more comfortable than the non-rolling one (we have both) and it is also more adjustable. It’s definitely better than a regular dining chair, but it’ll be hard to say if it’s better for your back because it depends on your own physique. My back has been pretty good in it so far and it’s been 5 days for me (+2 days of not good support at my dining table).
Oh, and if it matters, they are very pretty and you can get them in a bunch of colors. We bought them based on the looks initially. We never thought we’d be needing them for weeks on end.

He has had a very hard time in school this year. He is very hyperactive, doesn’t sit still well but is improving, and is very smart/verbal. He loves anything mechanical…. let’s say she brought him to the Museum of Science and Industry and wanted to live there.

I’ve been totally isolated at home (no trips out, not even a trip to the grocery store) for 12 days now, as have my mid-60s parents who live 45 minutes away. After we hit 14 days, they want me to visit them for a couple days. They would come and pick me up so I would not have to take any public transit (I do not have a car). I want to visit them, too; I live alone and it would lift all of our spirits, especially since they can no longer see my nephews who they usually watch, since they might be carriers.
But a small part of me is still terrified that there is a lot unknown about this virus and if I somehow gave it to them I’d never forgive myself. At the same time, the social distancing takes a severe toll and I don’t see how we can go on for months like this.
If you were me, would you visit them?
Elegant Giraffe
I would meet them for a walk and keep my distance.
anon
I’m taking this very seriously, and I would be comfortable going since both sides have socially isolated for the full two weeks (otherwise I would not). I would probably stay for the longer term with them.
Anon
+1. Same. If you have been 100% isolated — no trips to the store or Starbucks etc. If you’re really nervous about it (and I get it) — then you could do another wk to get it to 21 days and in that last 7 days do nothing — don’t pick up mail or packages or walk around your building. But honestly IDK if that’s even necessary. I think at 14 you are over 95%+ confidence — bc it’s a bell curve with most people showing symptoms in 3-5 days and 14 gives you 2 standard deviations from that.
Anon
The thing is though that 50% of younger people are asymptomatic. So it’s entirely possible OP is positive without knowing it. I would probably do 21-28 days to be safe.
Anon
Yes, after 14 days of true quarantine, I would.
Ness
No, I am in the same situation with my parents and the whole family agree not to see each other.
We call everyday, we do skype, my siblings send videos of the children, but, in their best interest we are not meeting. I know it is hard but it is the best for them.
Try to do activities (as cooking) that you can do with the phone speaker at the same time that them.
This is my 11th day confined.
Anon
+1. It’s really hard but it’s for the best.
AIMS
Can I ask why? Not trying to be snarky, just curious. If everyone is totally in isolation, and the only travel involved is their car, what is the danger? I mean I get it if you said ‘wait 21 days to be really sure” but I am just surprised it wouldn’t be better for everyone to be together under these circumstances.
Anon
Here’s how I view it – there is the risk of possible exposure from the UPS guy or from taking walks outside (assuming that the OP hasn’t literally been living in a bunker), but more than that, I think it’s the most responsible choice to adhere to the guidelines of shelter in place and avoid all non-essential travel, which is also meant to decrease risk of ordinary things like car accidents or a slip and fall on the parents’ stoop which would require medical care. A little paranoid? Maybe, but these are uncertain times, they won’t last forever, and I also find that getting more permissive and granting yourself exceptions tends to beget more exceptions (“I’m already getting groceries so I may as well go to Starbucks…”).
tl;dr: The risk definitely sounds low, but it isn’t zero and the safest choice is to stay home.
AIMS
Thanks! I appreciate your perspective!
Anonymous
If I were you, yes, I would go. Absolutely.
I would say, Listen to the part of you that is “wisely cautious and careful,” not the part of you that is “terrified.”
Coach Laura
I’d say go for it if you’ve been quarantined for 14+ days. I think you can help them and vice versa – cooking, ordering groceries, handling medical emergencies.
cbackson
Given that you’ve all been in full for-real isolation, I would be comfortable going see them. The mental health impacts of this level of isolation are real, and by banding together while continuing to isolate as a group, you may make it possible for all of you to maintain that level of protective isolation for longer. I’d consider staying with them long-term, personally.
Anon
I’ve been in isolation for less than a week, and I am 99% sure I’m going slowly crazy. If it was me, I would move in with them for the duration. I think that this is going to cause serious and potentially irreparable psychological harm to some people who are isolated alone for weeks on end.
Anon
I swear I’m not trying to be snarky, but maybe I am because today is just such a crap day, but I’m so surprised to see how risk averse everyone is when three weeks ago the prevailing opinion here was that everything was overblown and any type of preparation, even just asking about it, was overkill. I guess it’s heartening to see that those people have either changed their minds or gone away.
Anon
That feels like it was YEARS ago to me. Things have changed so damn quickly.
Cat
I still think stockpiling months’ worth of stuff is insanity, and the frequency of the question got people tired of hearing about it. You can be both cautious about the virus itself AND willing to live with your normal supply of food in the house.
Anon
I tried to go shopping with a normal grocery list this weekend, and almost nothing on my list was available. The grocery stores said it was due to distribution issues. I now wish I had stocked up a bit more the last time I was at Costco.
Anon
No one here said they were stockpiling “months” of food. I said I was stocking up in case we had to go one month without going to the store – we live in a semirural area where stores are already out of a lot of things and a couple of smaller markets have shut down due to either running out of things or not having workers to run the store, so I stand by my choice. Cat, maybe you are one of the people who shouted down anyone who was expressing concern a few weeks ago, albeit under an “anon” tag. You could just say you were wrong, instead of doubling down on being a jerk and insisting that belittling people is okay because you happen to find their behavior irrational – regardless of their personal circumstances. Today is always a good day to admit you learned something an extend grace to others instead of insisting that your jerkiness was justified. But hey – do you.
Anon
Yep. I was told I was a moron for canceling a late February trip to Vegas and for stocking up a bit so I could only go to the store once every week or 10 days. Now look — all of you are doing the same. Maybe don’t be so quick to be naysayers when there are others who have been following the news on an issue 6 weeks before you started.
Anonymous
Uh, some of us only ever go to the store once a week! That’s not a novel concept.
anon
Well 3 weeks ago the situation was entirely different. Stop trying to make people feel bad for changing their minds in light of new information — self-righteousness isn’t a good look on anyone.
Anon
Neither is hypocrisy.
anon
It’s not hypocrisy, it’s learning and growth.
Anon
Sure, but people were awfully mean before and I guess I don’t care that now you’ve changed your mind. You were a jerk.
anon
This is why no one is taking social distancing seriously. Because you’re all @$$holes to each other and it makes it really hard to care about what happens to you.
Anon
Has anyone experienced these symptoms? Want to be extra careful about necessarily burdening local healthcare, but Dr. Google is not helpful:
pain/lump-like feeling in back of right-side of throat (occasionally on the other side)
followed by sharp pain in left chest/ribcage that then travels to the other side
Does this even make sense? IDK
AIMS
No, but is your doctor doing virtual appointments? Mine is and this seems like a good question to ask remotely if that’s an option. Some insurance companies also have a nurse line for stuff like this. I try to stay away from Dr Google but this doesn’t seem like a silly question to ask a doctor.

What would you wear for a Skype interview in an already casual field?
The people I’m interviewing with are dressed just like anyone else on this site – athleisure, “nicer” sweatpants, etc – and working from home from their bedrooms in small apartments or the basement/den etc based on the backgrounds I can see. Lighting is not always the best and there’s generally a bit more chaos than most interviews. My field wasn’t that formal in the first place anyways.
I’ve been like . . brushing my hair and wearing a solid colored top. This probably helps because no one can see my gesturing, and only really see my head and shoulders. Sometimes makeup, and I do make sure there’s a decent background / lighting.
Anonymous
It sounds like you’ve already got this solved in a way that works for your industry. I would be shocked if what you wear while interviewing over Skype with people who are calling in from their basements or bedrooms has any impact at all on the hiring decisions, unless you’re wearing wildly unsuitable clothing, like a tube top or something. Carry on, and good luck with the interviews. Good to hear they’re still interviewing and hiring.

I know this has been talked about a lot, but did anybody find anything amazing on TV over the weekend? We have been watching the new version of The War of the Worlds on EPIX on Amazon (and OMG when we started watching a few weeks ago we didn’t realize we would be watching it from for-reals the end of the world!), and I discovered another EPIX show called Slow Burn, about the Watergate scandal. Each episode focuses on one fairly obscure character. The first one is about Martha Mitchell and holy cow even though I was in high school at the time and was vaguely aware of her story, it blew me away. Highly recommend.
Also followed my own advice and watched Galaxy Quest for the gazilionth time. Never gets old.
Anybody else have any gems to share?

So some of this is from pre-Coronavirus but the recommendations still stand:
– Anyone who loved Game of Thrones should watch Black Sails, available on Starz or Hulu. Have no idea how I missed that when it was airing (except, you know, Starz) but it is Game of Thrones with pirates. There are a lot of naked people and lots of violence so if GoT was not for you this will not be for you either. But I absolutely fell in love with the show.
– The HBO documentary on the McDonalds Monopoly game scam is pure gold. Could not get enough. Also on HBO, highly recommended, is The Outsider. An amazing cast and they do a great job of spinning out the story.
– We always love Cutthroat Kitchen (Hulu) but binge-watching it this weekend was a good escape.
– Season 3 of Westworld on HBO is airing. That and Better Call Saul are giving me life on Sunday nights right now.
I watched Backdraft last night, why I don’t know, I hadn’t seen it in 20+ years. That movie still holds up.
What not to watch, for us: Any of the pandemic or disaster movies (including Cloverfield). My son started watching Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (man I hate Guy Fieri but the food looks good) and we had to turn it off as seeing restaurants that we cannot go to, and that may not exist after this, was super-depressing. We agreed no travel/exploration shows in general right now.

SO and I started watching The Stranger on Netflix and got into it almost immediately; it’s a suspense/thriller with a lot of plot threads and a cliffhanger at the end of each episode that made us watch three in a row. (There are a total of 8, I think.)
My 25-y-o and I are watching Hunters on Amazon; it’s a story of a group of self-appointed Nazi hunters in the 1970s; it’s graphic-novel inspired but the produciton values are great and the cast is amazing (especially Al Pacino). It can e pretty violent, though, if that’s an issue for anyone.
Coach Laura
Working from home, I got an agonizing backache last week. At work I have a standing desk and usually alternated 30 minutes standing, 30 minutes sitting. Standing desks are $200+ and I didn’t want to spend that for something (that we hope is) temporary. I ordered a $36 standing desk called an UPdesk by Wallnature from amazon. It is amazingly good quality – not pressboard and not plywood, it’s like layers of veneer glued together so it looks like solid wood and it’s very stable. Hubby is also working at home (and also has a standing desk at work) so we are alternating use of it because it’s portable and adjustable for 5’3″ me and 6’1″ him. This was a real win this Monday.

I’m getting nervous about some of the news coverage today that Trump is considering loosening social distancing restrictions to lessen the economic impact of coronavirus, against warnings of his federal health officials. If this path of loosened restrictions is pursued, it could happen anytime after March 30th. Some sources are saying that after this time, young, healthy people (not clearly defined) would be encouraged to go back to work as normal. Other ideas are also being discussed. I am a young, healthy person. But I also have asthma and am newly pregnant. I just needed a place to vent a bit of this anxiety. I guess all I can do is wait and see, hope that “young and healthy person” will not include people with underlying conditions if we do loosen restrictions, or that I can somehow get a doctor’s note…
Anonymous
As a mother of 3, are school aged kids “young and healthy”?
I know people have it worse. I really do. But WFH with a 2, 4 and 7 y/o is…f*cking hard.
Anon
Yes. People under 20 are the least likely to die from this, and I for one hope that daycares and K-12 school resume normal operations before most other workplaces. I can’t functionally work from home with a 1 and 3 year old. I just can’t.
Anon
Each state is doing their own thing. As the cases go up I doubt this will happen, especially as those Spring Breakers start getting sick.
Anon
I agree with you that this is a bad idea. But “young, healthy people” clearly means people w/o chronic conditions that make you at risk for COVID-19 complications. I’m sure if you have asthma you won’t be expected to return to work.
Monday
I actually have a couple of coworkers who have publicly shared their heightened risk factors (and probably more who haven’t), and nobody has been allowed to stay home. One of them asked for a doctor’s note for being on immune suppressant drugs, and was denied the note. I don’t think we can necessarily assume anything, unfortunately.

Honestly, I don’t think it would happen even if he ordered it. So many states and cities have already imposed bands that are gonna to last long past April 1 and I don’t see that changing. We would just end up with a patchwork of different restrictions across the country

Which is already what we have.

I’m in a shelter in place area (Bay Area) and I’d like to spend some of this time planting my spring/summer garden. I saved some dried green bean pods from last summer so I will plant those as seeds, but I’d like some tomato, cucumber, and herb starts. Where can I order little plants without venturing out?
Anon
Burpee(.com) sells veggie seedlings!
Horse Crazy
I’d check with your local garden stores. I’m also in the Bay Area, and the little garden store near us is taking phone orders and doing curbside pickup.
Anon
I would also post this to Nextdoor. I bet there are neighbors/people in the area who have extra seeds (….I have hundreds, but am in Boston) and would love to share (without any contact).

+1 to the idea of checking local sources. I just bought some herb starts off of Etsy (of all places) from a farmer who lives less than an hour from me. Bonus, the plants are already adjusted to my climate and are known to produce well in my area. Now I just need to figure out where to buy a shovel to get the grass out of my flowerbeds…

Thanks everyone. Good idea to look on Nextdoor. One suggestion there was that a local hardware store has some. I called them and they’re out but will have more Thursday and are willing to do a curbside pickup order for me!
Interesting times we live in!

Annie’s annuals! They take web and phone orders.

I posted in the morning thread saying I live alone and have been seeing local family (300 yrs away) and that none of us have been seeing other people so we have considered ourselves kind of a slightly disparate household unit. I’m in the UK where the rules have just changed to explicitly say you must not see family members you don’t live with. Which means as long as those rules stand I can’t see them at all or be in a room with another human.
It just seems bizarre that I could move in with them – which would put us all at a higher risk of catching something – but that I can’t stay living separately but see them for a couple of hours a week. They may well invite me to move in with them, but losing the routine I’ve built up over the last couple of weeks might well be worse for my mental health than not seeing them. Why is it so difficult to do the right thing?

300 yards away. Not years. Clearly. D’oh.
Ses
I like it as years. You and your time-traveling visits to your family in 1720.
I would probably continue the visits only if it was the only contact I was having (so, working remotely, no members of either family going anywhere but to buy groceries ) .
Will work for books
Can anyone suggest some kind of ebook library service? I have a bunch of books I want to read at my local library as ebooks but there are huge numbers of holds on them. I don’t want to use amazon. Is there another service out there?
Anon
Have you tried just putting holds on the library ones? I sometimes go from #100 to #1 in just a few weeks. And if you always have the maximum (10?) holds placed, you should pretty much always have something coming up.
Will work for books
It’s estimating a ten week wait on one title I want hahaha. Hopefully this will be over by then (don’t crush my dreams). Honestly I mostly read popular garbage and that kind of stuff has a lot of holds. I have added my holds to the list.
I’ve looked into scribd for now.
Anon
YMMV, but it always wildly overestimates the wait times for me. If it says 10 weeks, it will be 1-2 weeks usually.
Anon
I have also fond the wait times to actually be shorter than initially predicted.
I think the holds assumes everyone in the queue will check the book out for the full standard time (time = # on waitlist * 2 weeks / # of copies the library system has). In reality some people will suspend their hold or take themselves out of the queue or just finish earlier and return the book.
Also try looking for different versions of the same book. I once bypassed a long waitlist but checking out the “movie” cover version of the ebook (idk why that even matters since it’s an ebook anyway but my library seems to list them separately at least some of the time).
Bookish
Scrib’d is an option — I don’t personally use it but I have a friend who loves it. Their tagline is that they want to be “the Netflix of reading,” which sounds like it matches what you’re looking for. I think they have a special right now too.
Personally, I have cards at like 6 different libraries, and I read across a lot of different genres, so I rely on that. May be worth checking to see if your local library has any inter-local agreements with other library systems in the area: if they do, then you can use their ebook systems as well. (I joke that one of my hobbies is collecting library cards.)
Work for books
Omg I love that you have 6 library cards. Amazing

I really like Scribd and it’s free for 30 days right now.
Anyone tried Seedlip?
Has anyone tried the Seedlip distilled spirits? I’m trying to cut down on my wine-drinking now that I’m stuck at home, and the flavors sound delicious. I feel a little ridiculous paying $30 for a bottle of… what? Spices? I guess there’s a fancy process to make a distilled non-alcoholic spirit? Is this really better than just making sparkling water or buying fancy balsamic vinegar to make a happy hour treat with food instead? I’m going to dig through the mocktail threads we’ve had, but wanted to see if anyone had tried that brand/could recommend a mixer that’s not just straight sugar.

Yes, I have it & really like it. I have the Spice one. Tastes good mixed with soda or tonic.
There is something fancy feeling about it when you only want to dole it out by the oz.

Ya girl just blow dried her hair AND put on a bit of makeup. What is this, the oscars?

Ha! Well I bet you look fabulous :)

I haven’t been on corporette for a while. Why is everyone posting with some version of “Anon”? It’s hard to follow the conversations. And if you lost with a fake name you are *already* “Anon”…..no?
