Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Aerosoles Women's Crescent Role Mary Jane PumpThis strikes us as a great classic Mary Jane for all those of us who need a strap and a sturdy heel. We like that the detailing isn't too shiny or too matte, and in general we like the comfort level of Aerosoles. This also comes in a red version, which we lurve, and a blue-on-blue version (for all those who prefer to wear navy shoes with navy suits). It's $89.50 at Endless.com, available in sizes 5.5-12. 1. I’m not a fan – just not me, I guess. I especially don’t like the crocodile print part. And I’m just not a big fan of shoes that have this much mix and match on textures and shininess, especially for work.

  2. Not usually a fan of crocodile print, but I like it here as an accent. I like Aerosoles in general, too; they just always seem to fit me well. Too bad I’ve already blown my shoe budget for the rest of the year!

I should point out that these are currently on sale at Aerosoles.com for $59.99. Sadly, I think they charge for shipping, but it’s still a better deal.

  3. Perhaps I have a lil’ too much muscle in my leg for such a shoe and it’s influenced my taste generally, but I think that while these shoes are conservative they are not particularly “professional.” Which might be a nice way of saying I don’t like ’em =)

    1. Not questioning your taste, but– “too much muscle”? Does the shape of one’s calves really influence which shoes look good? I never thought of that before.

        1. OK, then. Which styles look better/worse on muscly legs? I suppose this is all academic for me, since my calves are actually different sizes– I can’t win! But I’m still curious.

          1. It also depends on the placement of the strap. The higher straps tend to cut off the leg and make them look shorter. When I buy Mary Janes, I usually look for styles that have the strap lower on the foot, across the vamp or further down the instep area works better for me. Even better are the ones that have the strap that runs right at the beginning of the toe (and I think they look a bit more “grown up”).

I do like this shoe, but it just wouldn’t work on me.

          2. I agree with the ladies and also add the wrong round toe (and often for me almond toes are worse) make my foot stumpier, and thus my leg shorter and wider, as well as if the shoe texture is somewhat bulky (which I can’t explain but know when I see). I think the almond toes do all the bad things that round toes do, but when someone sees a round toe shoe they instinctively know it makes your leg look shorter and wider. Maybe it’s in my head.

Perhaps with different sized legs you go for a simpler shoe, whatever the look might be, but T-straps and Mary Janes that hit high (I LOVE the ones that hit closer to my toe cleavage) might shorten/widen your legs where a sleek, pointier toe may elongate and thin!

      1. Yes. The general rule with Mary Janes & other shoes with ankle straps is that they tend to make your legs look more muscular (and also shorter). Accordingly, if your legs are already muscular, you may not want to add to that appearance.
(Btw, I am not at all suggesting those with muscular legs, or whatever other kind, should ever not wear a particulat shoe, etc. Do what makes you happy, folks. You only live once.)

  4. Perhaps I have a lil’ too much muscle in my leg for such a shoe and its influenced my taste generally, but I think that while these shoes are conservative they are not particularly “professional.” Which might be a nice way of saying I don’t like ’em =)

  5. I like them. I have something similar and I usually get compliments from my co-workers, but I work in a business casual environment.

  6. C – when you post a shoe that is $30 more through sponsored links than it is elsewhere, it makes folks wonder. Maybe you could add the link to the cheaper store to the original post? No one expects you to hunt down all possible vendors that could have something cheaper, but this one is pretty obvious.

    1. Actually, I didn’t know about the Aerosoles sale price. (Amazingly, I’m not omniscient!) I found the shoe through Shopstyle, which is a site I use a lot of mornings to try to find something work-acceptable, in the price range for the day — it’s a tool that’s easy for me to use, not something I’m paid to use or even encouraged to use. Funny thing is, Shopstyle also runs on affiliate links, so it will feature a shoe that has an affiliate link over one that has a non-affiliate link (or at least feature it more prominently — not really sure how it works because, again, I have no relationship with them.)

This is where the commenters rock — if you guys see it on sale somewhere else, you’ll tell people, and if people like the shoe you’re more likely to buy it at Aerosoles than through Endless. (Meaning, I lose my cut and Endless loses the sale.) It’s a self-correcting market thing.

  7. Oh! I just noticed this in my inbox: free shipping on Aerosoles.com with promo code FS129X. Should be good through 12/25.

  8. Can someone recommend hosiery that actually lasts a decent amount of time? I’m tired of buying hose from the drug store and having it snag after one use. I’m looking for skin color and black sheer hose. Also, are you supposed to hand wash hose or is machine wash ok? Thanks!

      1. If you want them to last — always handwash & very carefully.
If you plan on machine washing, at the very least use a delicates bag & a gentle cycle.

As for brands — if you can spare the money, Wolford is amazing. Otherwise, try store like TJ Maxx or Filene’s for their stockings — they usually have nicer brands discounted for around $8-10.

And be very carefully with your nails, shoes, and anything else snaggable!

    1. Berkshire extra wear sheer — they usually last a very long time. I wash in the machine in a lingerie bag.

    2. Weirdly, it also really helps to store hose in the freezer. I know it sounds like an urban legend, but I think it knits the fibers closer together somehow, and its really extended the life of mine.

      1. I’d also like to point out the One Hanes Place website.
        http://www.onehanesplace.com/category/5000000000.html

If you like anything from L’eggs, Silk Reflections you can buy in bulk. They sells seconds, but I have bought from them for YEARS and have never, ever been able to tell what’s “wrong” with the nylons they sell.

I like Silk Reflections–they are comfy and they fit my super-long, skinny legs well.

One other tip…if you have any sort of adjustable keyboard or pull-out tray under your desk, tape over the metal fittings that protrude under your desk with packaging tape. That is my #1 “rip a giant hole” nylons killer.

        1. Completely agree re: Silk Reflections. I buy them from this website in packs of four, have also never been able to tell what makes them “slightly imperfect”, and they last a lot longer than more expensive brands I’ve tried.

Also, if you are super pale like me, Silk Reflections in Travel Buff is a great pale that won’t make your legs look white.

I wash them in a delicates bag on my normal wash cycle with the rest of my clothes and then hang them up to dry. Every now and then, they’ll still get caught on something through the delicates bag (velcro, most often), but it doesn’t happen very often. And I don’t really have the patience for handwashing :)

      2. I’ve heard this freezer idea before, but never tried it. Good to know that it works. So, hosiery summary: spend a little more on the brands mentioned above, but stock up when they are on sale; be careful not to snag them whilst handling them; hand-wash them (machine washing is death to hose, although I never tried a lingerie bag). In my hose-wearing days (where I live now is too hot for them) sometimes I’d wash just the feet.

    3. Hue – for both tights and hose.

You can find them in mid-market department stores (I specifically went to my local Macy’s so I could touch the samples and see the color out of the packaged. I have bought the tights at Loehmann’s/TJMaxx etc. I machine wash in a delicates bag alongside my other laundry and hang to dry. I remove my rings before putting them on which helps me a lot…

  9. I’ve got more shoes from Ferragamo than Aerosoles but I confess to thinking that Aerosoles style is pretty damn good and were I in a shoe acquiring mode, especially if I still lived in a city and walked to work, I’d probably have more pairs than I do. Not these exactly, maybe, but some of the other ones. And you can’t even compare the comfort to standard women’s work/dress shoes.

  10. These are hideous and not at all fashionable. I would secretly mock an attorney wearing Mary Janes with a skirt suit in court.

    1. Wow really, that’s cruel. I’ve met a few women who have such narrow heels that they must have a strap for the shoe to stay on. Not everyone is blessed with a foot that is easy to fit.

    2. I would secretly mock an attorney I thought was more focused on the subtle footwear choices of other attorneys than on the important issues before the court.

  11. Ladies,

Can anyone recommend where I can buy a long gold or silver necklace, the kind that everyone seems to be wearing nowadays over turtlenecks or blouses? The ones I have seen look kind of cheap. I don’t want to spend a fortune either, but surely there must be some stores that carry this type of necklace aside from Forever 21! Thanks!

    1. The Limited has some pretty good trendy/interesting pieces, and they’re in the $20-35 range. Plus, usually they have a b2g1 or b1g1 sale going on.

  12. on hose – I used to buy all the time from onehanesplace, but got annoyed by their balky website and bad customer service. but admittedly, that was probably more than 5 years ago before “business casual” and no one wore hose anymore (at least not as much in the South in the summer – I still wear hose or tights in the winter). hopefully, they have better support now.

on jewelry, I’ve actually found some fun long necklaces at H&M and Old Navy that I don’t think look too cheap (the H&M ones probably look better than the Old Navy ones though). I layer them and wear several at a time. and scour the sale tables at Macy’s, Nordstrom’s, etc. – I’ve found a couple there as well.

  13. I love these and just bought them. I find that the mary jane strap lets me wear a higher heel than that with which I would normally be comfortable. I’ve worn mary janes with pants and with skirts and there may be secret mocking going on, but there are also lots of compliments.

    1. I don’t think you should worry about looking unprofessional or too casual (especially with pants). But I wouldn’t wear something like this on a big day or job interview.

Maybe it’s just me — but I always think of chunky mary janes as less formal than most work appropriate shoes because they remind me of children’s shoes & shoes girls wore in catholic school. That said, I don’t think most people in a professional setting spend a lot of time looking at each other’s shoes & as long as you’re not wearing clear lucite heels or something similarly out there, you’ll be ok!

  14. I don’t like these AT ALL! Not even under pants. Sorry, C. For some reason, they look matronly and school-marmish too me, especially the heel (ick). I have several wider heels that are WAYYyy more stylin’. (Marc Jacobs).

  15. I love these shoes! Wish I’d known about them on Black Fri or Cyber Monday so I could’ve bought them then on discount!

  16. Hate the heels! I have chunky heels that I wear to work, and in my opinion, these are just dowdy.

    1. Hrrm. Maybe I’m just in an overly analytical mind today, but what makes these particular heels dowdy? I’ll admit that they may be too casual for some workplaces, but compared to many chunky heels I think they’re nicely tapered and rather stylish. What sort of chunky heels do you wear to work? Links would be much appreciated! :-)

      1. Can’t find the link as it’s been a year, but bought a pair of black patent 3″ Ferragamos for work in 2008 Nov/Dec (they were in stores as late as April 09) with a fabric bow. They are comfy + stylish + chunky heels – and I’ve lived in them all year. Perfect for skirts & pants.

  17. Agree with the last few posters – the chunky heel makes these look too dowdy for the office. I could rock the chunky heel as an angsty, rebellious teenager, but they seem inappropriate for the workplace.

  18. I can’t decide if they are old-lady dowdy, Docmartinesque, or little girlish. For one or more of those reasons, I don’t like them.

    1. Totally agree… I think they are a cross between old-lady-dowdy and little-school-girl.

  19. Wow, there’s some pretty “spirited” comments surrounding a run-of-the-mill posting about a sensible shoe.

  20. Ok I bought these shoes in the burgandy. THEY ARE SO COMFORTABLE! I think I will wear them with pants/jeans-not skirts, as they are a bit heavy to wear with a skirt. BUT-I will wear them outside of the office more than to the office! I love them!

  21. I have these shoes and love them. I wear them with my little black dress but I wouldn’t wear them to work.
