For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
We're liking this lovely purple crepe suit from Neiman Marcus. The rougher wool looks lovely against the lighter fabric on the neckline, and we like the empire waist on the dress. Call us crazy, but while we like both pieces together (very sophisticated), we also like them apart — we'd wear the shift dress with perhaps a winter white or khaki blazer, and the jacket with perhaps a white, long-sleeved, hip-length top and navy trousers. The jacket and skirt together (Tahari – Crepe Jacket & Dress) are $580 at Neiman Marcus.

Empire waist makes me afraid, but I can’t tell how bad it would be. Otherwise this is lovely! I just wish it wasn’t so expensive.

Is it possible to get some less expensive options? It seems like we’ve had $400+ suits featured for several weeks in a row.
TX1978
Last week’s suit was $129 . . .
PS : If you look at the sale section of NM’s website, a lot of really nice suits are on sale in an assortment of random sizes (many 8, 10, 12) — some of them have been featured here before so that may be of special interest to y’all :)

Anyone else think the low back of this dress is not appropriate for the office?
RoadWarriorette
I probably would not feel comfortable taking off the jacket, so the low back wouldn’t be an issue for me.
This suit it beautiful!
RoadWarriorette
This suit *is* beautiful.
That’s what I get for drooling over clothes as I type.
Mama JD
I agree that I wouldn’t take the jacket off. This is only because my office is freakin’ frigid (as cold as a meat locker) and because I try not to wear sleeveless to the office. That’s just my personal preference, but I don’t think the back is that low.
Lynette
Good grief, I was expecting to see a plunging low back. It’s fine for my office.
EG
Love this!
Jenny
I love this! Such a pretty color. I will keep my fingers crossed that it goes on sale.
Sharon
Beautiful and more office appropriate than all those LBD’s of late.
Amber
This is so beautiful! I want!
ClerkChic
Love, Love, LOVE. Now, if only they’d make it affordable!
Lynette
Beautiful cut, color and fabric. Wish my wallet could love it.
MJ
This is such a Jackie O dress. I have two similar suits from LK Bennett (UK brand) and my friends always call them my “senator’s wife” ensembles. HAHAHA.
em
Agreed – very Jackie O. Love it.
Mama JD
Absolutely frickin’ gorgeous! OMG, I think I drooled a little bit. LOL. I LOVE IT!!!! It’s just out of my price range for now. I might have to stalk this one. LOL
Deborah
I love it too- but it is too expensive- ouch

Om. Nom. Nom….Especially for redheads. My D just found a purple knit Calvin Klein shift on sale at Nordstroms for $70! Sorry I can’t find it online:).
housecounsel
Wow . . . this may be the most universally loved Corporette pick ever. I absolutely love it, too.
Liz
It is gorgeous. And I love that it’s a nice, deep purple instead of the basic black or navy. I do wish it wasn’t quite so pricey.
Faith
I guess I’m the only hater. I think it looks like something my mother would wear to a wedding, not something I’d wear to work.

you’re not alone – while the color is gorgeous, i don’t love the style (of the jacket) at all.
Mel^2
I don’t like it either, but I think this style of jacket isn’t particularly flattering on me with the boxy shoulders and unstructured style. I feel like with a pear shape, this would just draw attention to my hips instead of accentuating my waist.
Lawgirl
Loves loves loves! Fabric quality is awesome, fit is perfect. But can’t spend those kind of ducats on a suit this year :(
Amy
I vote gorgeous. Versatile and stylish.
Clerky
I think it’s gorgeous too, but I don’t see many women wearing dresses at my firm at all. Wonder why that is…
G
Probably because it can be difficult to find office-appropriate ones that fit properly (particularly under a suit jacket), and most people aren’t willing to waist a lot of time and S&H to find them. I wear dresses far less often that I would like to – because most of the ones I order end up getting returned for “fit issues.”
G
I meant “waste”. (I’m very embarassed).
Delta Sierra
:^ ) No worries, G. I try to write my comments with reasonable care, but I sure don’t proofread them the way I proof my real-world writing.

this is by far my favorite thing Corporette has ever featured. I love the color, the shape, everything. Now, were I lawyer already and not a law student, that suit would be mine.
CAP
dear lord — only available in a 4 and a 10?! what about us 6s?
though i’m almost glad it’s only available in such limited sizes, because otherwise it would be in my shopping cart already as my bank accounts cried foul
Abby
This is so gorgeous! I was going to splurge and buy it, but now size 10 is the only available size. Does this mean that it is not available in the brick and motar store either?

I grew up in a teeny-tiny town where the clothes-shopping was beyond awful, so I learned to sew when I was a teenager and made a lot of my own clothes, and learned about structure and cut and similar stuff. So, with apologies for the lecture-y tone: the dress’s low-cut back is what allows them to cut the jacket so close to the body. With the extra bulk of the fabric in a higher back, the jacket would have to fit bigger. This is also why dress-and-jacket combos usually have sleeveless dresses – too hard to make the jacket fit nicely with the sleeves’ fabric getting in the way.
This is a gorgeous suit, if you work in a chilly place and keep the jacket on all day, you have here a great day-to-evening outfit. Stick a flashy necklace in your bag, put it on for your evening out, drape the jacket elegantly over your chair, and voila, great restaurant dress.
While I’m at it, please let me register a vote for fewer clothes but better-quality ones. These days, sadly, a $150 suit just looks cheap. Anyone looking at it knows exactly what you paid for it. The cut is usually awful, and the fabric collapses after one or two cleanings/wearings.
Now here’s something I wonder if anyone out there knows about. I understand about the cheap fabric, but about the bad cut: people have been cutting suits since forever, so how hard can it be to cut even the cheap ones right? If you’re sewing thousands of copies of the same suit, does it really cost that much more to start with a decent pattern? This has annoyed me for ages, so anyone with any insight into it, thanks for sharing.

I have something just like this from Nordstrom from fifteen years ago. Very nice. I will now pull it out of the closet and wear it again!
D
Love it, especially the color. I will hope against hope to find it knocked off in a better price range soon.
Eva
Please please please post quick note if you see this go into the $300 range. Love it!
Secondhand Shopaholic
LOVE THIS DRESS! But as a shopper with a limited budget, I pick up most of my things at secondhand stores, so ever owning this ensemble is highly unlikely for me. It is very helpful for me, though, to keep up with Corporette so I can keep a hand on what’s in style.
J
I ordered this suit and it arrived yesterday. It appears to be very high quality, is more beautiful in person than online, and is extremely flattering. It appears that there are additional sizes available right now (and I have noticed that there are periodically others available too if you check back).
A
On sale if you are a lucky size 4.
SheLawyer
This is on sale now for $299, but they only have size 4 left.
