Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. icon iconReader E writes in to suggest this lovely sweater from White House Black Market — she notes:
The price does not reveal the quality…good workmanship, roomy, long sleeves, a pinch of real wool, and enough hook/eye closures to avoid gaping in the bust. I plan on wearing it with solid blacks, greys, reds in my fall/winter wardrobe as well as with tailored dark jeans and maybe black booties on weekends or casual office days. Can be worn now to combat ac if left open. The collar isn't too big so as to be overwhelming and should also accommodate turtlenecks in winter. Sizing runs true for this brand's cut. The hooks/eyes bring in the middle so there is a very slight, but welcome, cinched waist effect. This seems to fit in with my multi purpose purchase mindset and gives me the look of a ‘vest' or layered look without the added bulk or LLBean/outdoorsy vest appearance.
It looks lovely! It's $98 at White House|Black Market. 1. If I worked in a more creative field or some sort of sales, I could totally see this. being good.

  2. Definitely cute, but not for the workplace (unless as K mentioned above, you’re in a creative field). I love the collar. It’s not a piece I’d get a lot of wear out of though because the design would probably drive my eyes crazy. LOL. Cute though.

  3. And what is it with the stupid ways that “they” have models pose these days? (I know I sound like an old crank.) I’m not referring to just this particular picture, though it’s particularly egregious.

Models seem to have a limited number of expressions: “Give it to me, baby,” “I’m a little girl without the confidence to stand up straight despite this $1000 suit,” or “I’m just coming off a particularly intense heroin trip.” So annoying. Or maybe I just need to calm down for the day and switch to decaf.

    1. Heh heh heh. I’m with you. I’d like to see the clothes, thank you. I’m not some perv.

    2. I couldn’t agree more! It drives me bananas! You don’t suit up to stand like a schlump in the corner…models look like the just fell out of the dryer…you can’t get a good idea of how the clothing looks.

    3. Seems like ad folks are trying to tell consumers fashion is not about the clothes, but teh moddles.

Incidentally, what’s the deal with White House Black Market? I’ve never set foot in one and always thought of it as a cheap, low-quality mall store, but it’s getting a lot of play here (and elsewhere) lately. Anyone actually shop there?

  4. It sounds like the suggester’s office is much more casual than mine! Wouldn’t fit in at my office (fairly broad range of business casual biglaw) not because of the pattern, but because the different-colored arms make it look too outdoorsy. Cute though.

  5. The pattern is just way too loud for me, in or out of the office.

I think the model’s rather desperate message is a sort of trying-but-failing-to-look-like-jailbait. That said, she has a very pretty face.

  6. Cute for weekend and for a more casual office. I think that the collar would get in my way though.

  7. This is some sort of hideous pop-art/80’s throwback. Any bold pattern on my chest and abdomen is a terrible idea, and it’s not like I am huge or anything. I give this a huge FAIL!

  8. I’m with MJ, this is awful and reminds me of a sweater I had when I was in junior high, in the 80s.

  9. Don’t like this one.The pattern seems really throwback- and not in a cute classic, vintage way- it’s a little like 80s upchuck. And the styling looks awkward; when I first looked at the photo, I thought I was looking at a vest, not a sweater because of the way the neck is shaped and how the front doesn’t form well around the model.

I agree with the previous posts; it really isn’t professional for most offices, (save for the casual ones). But even if it was- I wouldn’t wear it.

  10. I wouldn’t feel comfortable in a pattern that loud or a collar that bold, and I think it would be a little much for my workplace. However, I think that on the right person, in (as others have said) a more creative field, it could be very cute.

  11. In general, I don’t care for sweaters where the body is one color and the sleeves are solid — with the exception of argyle. Talbots periodically brings out sweaters that have paisley on the body and solid on the sleeves and I think it looks so much older than a sweater that is paisley overall. I mean, granted, it’s Talbots in the first place, but you know what I mean. Anyone else have this observation?
