Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. Reader A wrote to us, raving about the quality of this season's cardigans at Old Navy — she noted that there are many “normal, pretty things this season . . . some great classic pieces available, and many of them (particularly the cardigans) seemed well made.” She actually called out this sweater, but after checking Old Navy.com we had to draw your eyes to this lovely purple sweater — it's a great way to add a pop of color to an otherwise drab wardrobe. We'd wear it with gray trousers and perhaps a white bodysuit blouse beneath it, and maybe add a black and yellow accent by way of an accessory — a brooch, a scarf, a necklace. Lovely. The cardigan is available in 8 colors, regular and tall, sizes XS to XXL, and it's on sale — was $29.50, now $15. I keep reading about bodysuit blouses – they sound terribly uncomfortable. On the other hand, it would be nice not to have to worry about my shirt constantly coming untucked. Does anyone have any experience with them, or any recommendations?
Delta Sierra
You have to try them on, make sure they fit. If they’re long enough for your torso, they’re great.

I remember “body suits” from elementary school in the mumble, mumble 70s mumble mumble.
I still don’t know how the heck you conveniently go to the bathroom in those things.

I came here (from Google reader) to comment on the bodysuit thing too! I feel like it has been mentioned here repeatedly and it seems so anachronistic to me! Like, aren’t bodysuits those things I wore in high school in the early nineties? And I thought they were already out of style then …
On the other hand, I never wear blouses/buttondowns in part because of the difficulty of tucking them in — many of mine are too short to stay tucked in, and then there is the problem of creating bulk/unsightly folds and wrinkles.
Is the bodysuit really still a common thing among stylish professional women? How about a poll?
MEG
Haven’t seen them in ages. They are uncomfortable, and they’re hired to iron too.

Chadwick’s is selling them these days. I’m really tempted to get one when they have their sales.

I have a charmuse body suit blouse from Victorias secret. I love it under suits. It is so nice. You don’t have to worry about your button down shirt looking sloppy underneath your suit.

Sweater looks nice, but when I was in law school and forced to shop at Old Navy (due to poverty), I swore once I “grew up” and became an actual lawyer, I’d never shop there again. I have kept the promise to myself, except for a couple of casual maternity items (which turned out to be disposable), but if the quality has improved, perhaps I should reconsider. Especially in light of the declining quality/increasing prices of certain other stores . . . (I am talking to you J.Crew!)

I’ve found that Old Navy’s sizes have been running a bit small. Anyone have thoughts on how this sweater fits?
s-k-s
I’m a fan of Old Navy’s 100% cotton sweaters – they are as good quality as some of the more expensive brands in their family. However, their synthetic blends don’t hold up .

I can second the comment on the quality of Old Navy’s sweaters this season. I got one of those cardi-coats you see in all the commercials. Yes its an acrylic blend, but is very soft and not scratchy and the quality of the detail in the knit is shockingly nice for just $20. I was very impressed. Only possible problem is that the snaps seem like they may need reinforcing down the line, but if it only lasts a season for $20 I still feel like that was a win.

I am not ashamed to admit that I wear Old Navy to work.
Sharon
I’d love to hear how people would style this for different offices. For a business casual atmosphere — I see a cream colored tank or fitted tee, great herringbone tweed pants that pick up a thin line of the purple, earrings that echo the purple and brown, and some chunky brown boots. For a more formal atmosphere — I see a white charmeuse blouse underneath, a slim black long pencil skirt with classic slingbacks, and pearls. Loads of pearls.

I love Old Navy for work! Lots of pieces that work well to blend in with the higher quality stuff. And since some posters point out that because of the price, it’s not a huge deal if it doesn’t last more than this season.
Sharon – great outfit ideas! Lovely! I agree, these kind of sweaters can be pulled in so many directions. I’d even wear this with jeans and tank on one of our rare office jeans days, or with a more casual skirt on the weekend.

Anyone have a source for a RED, structured sweater jacket? Something more structured than a cardi? Even though the fashion mags are alternating between the outfits with purple and those with red/grey/black/white, not finding much red in the stores. Happy first weekend of fall gals –

Found this (http://www.dillards.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=301&langId=-1&storeId=301&productId=502075909&N=1590640+2010165&searchUrl=%2Fendeca%2FEndecaStartServlet%3FN%3D1590640%2B2010165&R=03054986) in an ad in the November issure of Glamour. Might not work for you if you’re not into the trendy aspect of the jacket, but just thought I’d put it out there.

Actually, I DO like it – the Parisian, feminine aspect of it. i will have to try and find it for a try on. Thanks!

Check out Talbots – they have a lot of red items in their fall catalogs. I like this sweater, although I haven’t seen it in person: http://www1.talbots.com/online/browse/product_details.jsp?id=prdi23156&rootCategory=cat70008&catId=cat80002&sortKey=Default§ion=Regular&conceptIdUnderSale=

Red is really hard and can look old-lady, IMO. Have you tried finding something more of a brick color?
dr
Sharon – haven’t found anything in brick, maroon, burgundy…nothing but the “berries” – thanks, will keep looking. FYI, there’s lots more true red running around here in Texas, but from my time in the mid-atlantic, I know it’s not too favoured elsewhere. I was walking across a grocery store’s parking lot and a little 3 year old girl, stopped, pointed, and said (in a happy, surprised tone), “Look, Mommy! Red shoes!”
LPC
I love that sweater. But I am a big fan of cardigans.

Old Navy was a lifesaver for me as far as work pants while I was transitioning up and down from two pregnancies. I got a few inexpensive basics – brown, navy, black pants in bigger sizes and wore them during and after pregnancy until my regular clothes fit again.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’ve been shopping around at Old Navy – they’ve really upped their game lately, when the more “upscale” stores have let the quality of their clothes dwindle. And for $20, you really can’t go wrong, even if the clothes don’t hold up for more than a season. (I will say, though, that I bought a cardigan sweater at Old Navy when I was finishing up my 3L, which wasn’t yesterday- and it’s still hanging in my closet, just as wearable as it was the day I bought it. Sometimes you just get lucky!)
peg
I just don’t buy the comments about the improved quality at Old Navy. I actually think that their quality has been on the decline lately and would not shop their for work unless I truly only wanted to wear an item ONE time and then demote it to pajama status. Seriously, the stuff just doesn’t look good once its been washed.
em
I don’t understand the comments about Old Navy’s quality, especially the “so what if it only lasts a season it’s $20” comments. I used to buy nearly all my clothes there all through late high school and college (I’m a 2L now) and with the exception of a sweater that has shrunk too much and a pair of slacks, probably purchased in 2002 or so, that became too threadbare, everything has lasted. I like to shop more at Banana now, and I think I’ve outgrown a lot of the more trendy stuff they have at Old Navy, but I still think you can’t beat Old Navy for basics like this, or cute simple items you want to get in several colors. For example, I bought three different colored flyaway cardigans at ON back in January and they are still as bright and new-looking as ever. I take care of my clothes no matter where they are from – maybe that’s the difference?
kb
I completely agree with em. Old Navy’s more trendy items will fall apart rather quickly, but their basics will last quite a while, and when mixed with more expensive items are not readily identifiable. Last week I wore an Old Navy cardigan belted over an Oscar de la Renta shift dress and got a lot of compliments. I’ve only had the cardigan for a year, but other Old Navy basics in my closet seem to be wearing fairly well.

I love ON’s cable knit sweaters this season. They are super comfortable and come in a lot of fun colors. I bought quite a few v-necks and zip sweater hoodies (to wear around the house). Such a good deal for the price. I find they run true to size. I’m also a huge fan of ON’s exercise/yoga clothes and tank tops. I hit up ON for all my basics. I’m just so OVER paying top dollar at jcrew, etc. when the quality is just not there anymore.
Oh and as for bodysuits… check out victoria’s secret if you are interested in one. They have a nice collared shirt bodysuit that really looks great. The length is a tad short for me but if they made it in a tall I would buy a ton more. I love how the shirt stays perfectly in place and it gives you a nice, slim silhouette too.
