This is ok, but I find most Evan-Picone dresses look the same, and most look like they should be worth $50, not $99 (or even $85).
Va Gal
I agree. I have had a couple of Evan Picone items, and neither held up very well at all.
AIMS
To me Evan Picone says “Clearance Rack” @ TJ Maxx/Marshall’s.
Even if I liked the dress better, I couldn’t bring myself to pay this much for it. I am all for spending this or more for a dress but not on this kind of dress.
Also, for some reason, I seriously dislike this shade of blue. Nothing against it for other people, but it literally makes my eyes ache.
jcb
It’s Cubs blue! Don’t like the dress that much though, looks like a cheap rendition of the Suzy Chin dress that was so commented upon here a while back.
Also – PSA – ruelala.com is having a Chanel boutique with some a-maz-ing skirt suits. I am not letting myself buy any since they will not fit my current measurements, but would love to live vicariously. Also, there is a Johnston & Murphy shoe boutique. Doesn’t have the mary janes featured on here recently but there are a few nice styles, about half off.
SJ
I like this a lot, but I’m concerned about the fabric being too clingy for work. Has anyone seen it in person?
zee
Yes. It’s pretty clingy and cheap-feeling. The proportions were weird too. The great concept gets lost in the execution. Unfortunately, I returned it.

Legally Blonde
Sorry–the half finished “L” above was me. Accidently hit enter.
I have this dress. I should have returned it. I also love the concept, but the proportions are, I agree, weird. I did make it somewhat better by having it hemmed to knee length (it naturally hit at mid-calf). I only wear it places where I need to be conservative but not really stylish.
lawyer
I love the sleeves and length, but I will not buy a dry-clean item for under $150. (Although the poly/spandex blend makes me think it would do all right on the delicate cycle and hung to dry.)
lawyer
Also, the review on the website cracks me up – “I bought this in blue to wear to work (and patriotic-themed parties) .” How many of those does your average bear have to attend?
surrounded by lawyers
Maybe she has a patriotic-themed job and these are work functions? (I live in DC and can think of a number of possibilities…)
Bonnie
I laughed at that too. It made me think of all the tourists in DC sporting Old Navy 4th of July tees on the 4th.
surrounded by lawyers
Wonk that I am, let me add that sometimes you also need a “partisan” outfit in this town. You know, for watching election returns at a bar, etc. Another reason one may need a bright blue–or bright red–dress.
Donkey or elephant accessories optional…
Kimberly
Hahaha! That was me, who posted the review about “the patriotic-themed parties”. I actually bought it because this shade of blue looks lovely on me, and though the fabric is rather thin, I think the dress looks pretty good. I can see why some would find it too clingy or thin, though. I’ve gone back and forth over whether I really need to wear a slip under it. For me, many dresses just don’t fit right on my upper half, but this was a good find for my particular hourglass shape.
And yes, I do have to attend a red-white-and-blue-dress theme party at Philly’s Constitution Center this Friday, so it’ll come in handy for that. :)
s-p-s
Just last night, I took into account similar considerations (although in a sunk-costs context) when debating whether to keep a dryclean-only skirt that was too long and that has never quite felt right…thinking about the cost of future drycleanings and the cost of tailoring (and knowing that the pattern still wouldn’t feel quite right) decided that it wasn’t worth keeping…off to charity!
MelD
You probably wouldn’t even need to bother with delicate. I wash poly/spandex stuff in a regular cycle all the time and they’re no worse for the wear. It seems weird to me that you’d get “dry clean only” tags for clothing made from the same blends as gym clothes.
Experienced
Here here for your fabric/dry cleaning rule. My favorite dresses this summer are 2 from Banana that can be washed. They’ve washed very nicely. It’s a huge savings and convenience.

It’s all about not buying clothes – one group is about wearing the same six pieces of clothing for a month, and the other is about not buying anything new for a year.
Anon
This is awesome.
Chicago K
Interesting. I must admit, I don’t have the largest wardrobe ever. I feel like wearing the same things every week or every other week really wears them out faster though. I have quite a few shirts from BR from last fall that already look faded and pilled. Maybe quality just isn’t the same anymore…I’ve been trying to buy more Brooks Brothers stuff as I here the quality is good.
FYI – they still have 50% off sales going on! I picked up a bunch of sweaters there the other day. :)
A
I have that same problem with BR shirts and resolved not to buy any more shirts or sweaters from them.
L
I am sure I could do the not-buying thing for a year. Maybe I will try it for a couple of months and see how it goes! :)
I couldn’t wear just six items though, I would get baby spitup on all of them and have to go naked as I was washing them!
Anon
Yeah I’d need to exempt work-out clothing as I typically exercise twice a day (and can’t really think of any places where a jiu jitsu uniform would be appropriate attire other than on the mat!). But otherwise, I like it :) I feel like I always reach for the same things in my closet anyway…
Shayna
It definitely made me feel better about wearing the same black pencil skirt more than once a week! I also feel like I wear the same things over and over… and it’s ok! (what a revelation!)
Anon
Shayna, it’s totally ok – I only own 4 work skirts (and 3 pairs of pants). They get a LOT of use :)
Shayna
:-) this morning I actually was standing in my closet thinking, I like this skirt, I like wearing it, I’m ok with wearing it a lot… and yet I feel like that’s wrong somehoww – what a relief to know I’m not alone – and, as said above with a big sigh of relief, “it’s ok!”
AN
Shayna , no one remembers….they’re usually too busy obsessing about their own clothes:)

I recently bought the pattern for the Uniform Project dress (http://www.theuniformproject.com/) , which is along the same lines. This girl wore the same dress every day for a year and accessorized it with things she owned and donated items. I have a HUGE casual wardrobe, full of things I rarely wear or things that are hard to mix and match, so I’m looking forward to adventurous accessorizing on my own time with this new project. It’s obviously not something I’ll wear for work, but my work wardrobe is kind of along the same lines. I’m a summer intern and have 10-12 pieces on the more formal end of business casual that I mix and match – I can get about a month’s worth of unique outfits from those things and can accessorize and feel that I have sufficient variation without having to go shop for more stuff.
Forestgirl
That’s a really amazing video and a great concept, but watching the video it’s clear that her wardrobe was definitely not limited–she wore TONS of different pieces. Really cool to watch, though.
J
oh totally, but she limited it to things she already owned or things that were donated to her – she didn’t buy anything. that’s how i’m treating the whole project – i’m going to use the dress as a vehicle for my fabric problem and to try and integrate some of my more difficult casual pieces into a more regular rotation.
Little Lurker
The Uniform Project wasn’t a “fashion diet” or just a publicity stunt; it was a charity event to raise money and awareness among well-off fashionistas about how priviledged a problem “what do I wear?” is.
All of the items featured were donated to her and often auctioned off for the charity as well.
While I appreciate the cleansing nature of the Six Items project, a fried pointed out that it really resembles a bulimic approach to fashion. It’s much more healthy to have a solid wardrobe of some 20 pieces and find ways to get creative with those rather than have only 6 options and then feel guilty for buying a new pair of pajamas.
Still, I’m glad that the minimalist approach is gaining traction. :)
caesia
I own this in a different color from a previous season and I love it. It is not clingy, not too low cut (no cami required!) and looks great alone or with a blazer/cardi. It does not wrinkle. It’s long enough to be work appropriate. The fabric is substantial enough for winter wear but also a good buffer against my heavily air conditioned office in the summer (I wouldn’t wear it in a heat wave though). It says dry clean, but I wash it on cold/gentle and hang to dry with no problems. It’s really perfect. I’ve been thinking about picking up another color or two since I’ve been so happy with this dress.
75
I think this dress is washable.
I often try to picture – what would a person look like walking into my conference room wearing thus and such item? I mean, not a client, but another attorney. This item – with all of the ruching – would look out of place on the back of an attorney walking into my conference room, any age. It would not look like business clothing, but rather would look almost like party clothes. A jacket would not change that – it is more about the cut of the skirt. My office is in the building of a major bank. Maybe that colors my thinking. The setting does relate to what you look good in. I am actually wearing a dress today in that shade of blue. It is very simple, no ruching, narrow skirt with a couple of pleats that does not swing or sway when I walk.
On the other hand, I do agree with the Macy’s ad that says this dress is office attire. I just don’t think it it is clothing for an attorney.
E
I think these are good comments, one consideration is if you are pear shaped, a straight shift can look atrocious (speaking from personal experience) and something with a little more swing to the skirt can be very flattering. I think this dress may do that for me. I don’t see anything unprofessional about it — if someone walked in to my office with a typically professional manner, in this dress, I wouldn’t think twice. If she was posing like the model, not so much….though I do like a happy model.

Thread Hijack –
Looking for advice on MBA programs. There are several programs in my area that range between $50,000 and $100,000. The $100,000 program being a well known (across the globe) highly reputable, top ranked school. The $50,000 option being a small local private school that anyone outside of this town has probably never heard of, but people in this town say good things about.
Any one have opinions on if they more expensive top ranked options are really worth it? I have 10 years post grad experience, so I am somewhat established in my career, but would like to move up (and not just to middle management, to doing jobs at a higher level and a higher payscale).
I would be paying for the $100,000 option with a ton of loans. the $50,000 option I would be able to afford out of pocket with probably less than $10,000 in loans. Since I am 30, I want to start a family soon and don’t know that all these loans are the best option for me. But on the other hand, I want to get a better and higher paying job.
Opinions, experiences? Thanks!
Shayna
I did the less expensive option – not as well known but it was a 2 minute drive instead of an hour and a half each way — I don’t know what the difference would have been at an expensive program, but I think you get out of it what you put into it – if you make an effort to talk to your classmates you will make connections, if you make an effort to be in every class, participate in discussions, and talk to your professors, you will get a great education out of it. I have zero regrets, and zero loans.
Leah
I agree with Shayna. I did the less expensive/smaller school option for my MBA.
E
Are you planning to stay in your location for the longterm? If you think that as part of getting a higher paying job, you would want to move out of the area, the better known school may be worth it to you. If, on the otherhand, you are commited to your locale and the smaller program has a good local reputation, than the savings may be worth it.
Also, not to be a downer, but have you seriously considered how getting that higher level job will jibe with starting a family? I’m almost embarrassed to bring this up because it sounds very antiwoman, antiwork, but have you considered your priorities might change with the addition of a kid or two? I speak from personal experience, as I have devoted the last 10 years of my life to training for my profession, have spent countless hours in the workplace. 18 months ago, I had a child and it changed my priorities instantly. I’m now looking for jobs that allow me not to spend hours and hours at work. I think it would be a shame to spend 100,000 on school, be deeply in debt, and miserable at work away from your kids. Maybe paying for a degree from a smaller school will give you more flexibility in the future, especially if you are staying in your same area.
Anon
Along the same lines, also consider the time factor of repaying loans w/r/t how soon you want to start a family. I’m 30 and would like to finish paying off my law school loans before we have kids, which means another 3-4 years of payments (I’m in house and happy as a clam but it meant a paycut when I left biglaw). I definitely wish I’d applied for scholarships/grants, plead my case with the fin aid office, etc., to reduce that burden in advance. If I had no loans, I’d definitely have kids earlier.
Karen
I second the opinion that whether you want to stay in the region matters a lot in your decision. I went to a well-ranked law school out of state, and upon returning home have found that the local private option would probably have been just as good for me in terms of career opportunities here. I think if I move out of state I’ll be better off with my bigger-name school though. Either way the program was the better fit for me and I’m glad I made the choice I did, but it has definitely given me a better appreciation for local connections.
Anon
E- I have considered this actually. And I too feel a bit “anti-woman.”
The thing is, since I am in a fairly large city, when I tell people about the small private school they always say, “Oh yeah, that’s great. But since we have X here that is top ranked why aren’t you looking at that?” I don’t want to say, “Because I want to have a baby upon graduation and having $100,000 of student loans and becoming an investment banker to pay them off doesn’t seem like it will work with that plan.”
I do want to stay in this area, but it may be a bit different as my area has the small school and the top ranked option here?
@Shayna – you make great points.
Thanks everyone. It’s good to see noone is totally taken aback by my considering a less expensive school. So many people online are in the opinion of, “There is no point in business school if it’s not top ranked.”
surrounded by lawyers
One more: I used to teach at a well-respected but not top-ranked business school, and I want to second the consideration of where you want to live long-term. Faculty, peer, and *especially* alum contacts are very valuable from a local school if you plan to stay around. There’s a lot of loyalty and pride, and alums now established in the area are eager to help new grads just as they were once helped themselves.
Anon
This Anon was me, the OP.

Something to think about — one great solution to being a professional who actually spends time with young children, I think, comes from being a superstar. If you have very strong credentials and have proven yourself to be a valuable employee, you can often negotiate for and even create a family friendly position where none previously existed. I did this at my work, as did my friend, who is the first part-time partner at a particular major law firm. Having the sparkly resume certainly helped both of us. Food for thought.
anon - chi
True – but it’s nearly impossible to know in advance whether you will be the next superstar. I remember my law school telling us during orientation that nearly everyone in our class came from the top 10% of their college class, and probably all of those people would expect to be in the top 10% of our law school class as well. Needless to say, the vast majority of those people would be seriously disappointed when grades came out.
MelD
Since you’re more established in your profession, I assume you have contacts in jobs you’d like to have once you complete your MBA. I’d ask them what they think about the two choices and whether going to the cheaper school might lessen your chances of moving into those positions. They can also take into account your background/work experience and whether that may be able to make up for any lack of prestige.
It would be a shame to go to the expensive school only to find out when you graduate that the same employers would have been happy to take you with the lesser degree. My cousin chose a less expensive route and I don’t think it could have gone any better for him.
Brittany
I really love this color, but the fact that people automatically said the fabric looks cheap turned me off. The sleeves and length look appropriate for work. Plus, I like dresses with longer sleeves because for some reason my office insists on creating an icy tundra inside during the summer. Oh well.
Makeup Junkie
very sexy! But, I agree that Evan Picone is kind of low-quality, unless it’s improved over the last few years.
Clerky
I bought a Ralph Lauren dress in the same color and same fabric, and ended up returning it. There’s something about this color that ends up looking cheap, unless it’s in a high fabric quality. I do love royal blue so I would love to find a really nice dress in this color that didn’t give off the cheap vibe.
Ru
Blue is a hard color, isn’t it? Odd, especially considering what a common favorite it is. I *love* blue, in all of its shades but with certain fabrics, the blue sometimes looks awful. I have lots of blue clothes and I had to search a lot to find blues that I love and feel are worth paying for. I’m still looking for that deeply saturated rich royal blue dress/top/sweater. One day, I shall be victorious! =)
Clerky
Ru – I bought a gorgeous royal blue cotton bateau neck shirt from the Gap a few months ago (it was featured here on a Friday). I love it and always get compliments on it when I wear it. I doubt it is in stock anymore but if it is, grab it up.
RR
LOVE that Gap shirt. Deeply love. There’s something about a perfect Gap t-shirt – the cotton is amazing, and the color is divine. My favorite Corporette-inspired purchase ever.
Legally Brunette
I have it too. Isn’t it the best? So comfortable and the color is stunning.

Definitely envious of your finds! If I ever find something as amazing as your shirts sound, I’ll definitely post it here =)

Anyone have any luck at the Nordstrom sale? I met with a stylist there, but came home with the same stuff I always do on my own, an assortment of tops, no pants and no real outfits. Argh. I might take some of the stuff back but I know the stylist did spend time with me so I don’t want to deprive her of her commission (assuming there is one). I just wasn’t wowed by the quality or selection. I guess the real fall merchandise will come in later. I got a couple of ruffle front tops (similar to Ann Taylor I already have), one Classiques silk top, one drapey cardigan, one Halogen cardigan. I really wanted a suit but nothing fit right. She showed me a lot that wasn’t on sale, even though I told her I was there for the sale, so that kind of frustrated me. I did love the $200 (not on sale) jeans she picked out for me, didn’t get them, but may still do so.
What did you get at the sale?
Legally Brunette
I haven’t been to the store yet, but I purchased two dresses online. They haven’t come in yet so I can’t say whether I like them, but I’m hopeful. I sent around the links in yesterday’s post I believe.
I also bought a really great black CE wool suit during the presale. My go to brand at Nordstrom is CE, I have never bought anything else except a few cheaper tops from the Halogen line.
Sorry that you didn’t find any complete outfits. The quality of personal shoppers varies so drastically that I’m not surprised that you weren’t thrilled with the woman you had. Perhaps you can sign up with someone else? Also, if you return the clothes they will lose their commission, but if you don’t like what you bought that certainly shouldn’t stop you from sending it back.
MelD
I got a few things in the Halogen area, which isn’t where I normally shop, but I wanted the cardigan posted here on Friday (got it in the light green) and some basic black pants.
JLaw
Ha, I bought too much at the sale! But, I worked there for 7 years (not in retail), so my style has kind of been defined by Nordstrom and I’m generally hard pressed not to find things I like there. I got the two grey dresses people posted on here, the sweater Kat posted, another cardigan, a tweed skirt and a black blazer. I did, however, enlist an old friend to hook me up with a discount though, so I got everything pretty much 50% off original price. You never really get over the loss of your Nordstrom discount . . . . Justifying all my purchases on the clerkship I’m starting in a month!
AN
I spent way too much as well:( But I got a lovely Missoni top at 1/3 it’s price so that makes me feel better when I consider the stuff that needs to go back.
AN
I mean “its price”.

I have a random question, and I was hoping that you ladies might be able to provide some feedback. I made my bi-annual visit to the dentist yesterday and found out that my nighttime teeth grinding has escalated to the point where I need a night guard. The dentist was more than happy to suggest a set of nightguards by Invisalign that retail for $515 (and can be purchased through her office of course), but that is just not in my budget. Can anyone offer a suggestion for a brand that has provided them with some results? I am looking for something I might be able to find in-store (Target, etc.) or online.
Thanks!
Chicago K
While I didn’t take their advice, I’ve had several dentists suggest I buy a nightguard from Walgreens and never even suggested a more expensive option. I don’t grind my teeth, but I clench my jaw and it causes pain into my ears.
I decided I would just live with it and try to destress. But I can’t imagine a $500 option would be worth it!!! It’s just a peice of plastic and I would imagine you would want to throw it out on occasion due to bacteria. Try the cheaper one and see before you invest in the brand name!
anone
I would see if there is a cheaper option that you could try first, but keep in mind that even the $500 option is still cheaper than surgery. I have known a number of people with this problem who eventually had to have jaw surgery for TMJ.
EG
I have the same problem, and I buy this DenTek guard at drugstore.com.
http://www.drugstore.com/products/prod.asp?pid=187616&catid=1152&trx=PLST-0-CAT&trxp1=1152&trxp2=187616&trxp3=1&trxp4=0&btrx=BUY-PLST-0-CAT
The package says they last for 6 months, but I don’t use them that long. You can clean it buy rinsing it well and / or soaking it in a bit of mouthwash. I’ve used other guards from the drugstore, this one is the best for me–least intrusive and the way it is structured, fit is not a problem.
Legally Brunette
I have a grinding problem as well and finally purchased a custom made night guard from my dentist last year. It’s made a HUGE difference and because it’s custom made, it’s extremely comfortable wearing. In fact, I feel more comfortable wearing it than without!
I realize that $500 is a lot of money, but think seriously about getting one . I have heard through friends that the cheap ones you get at the drugstore are not very comfortable to wear. No point in buying a cheap one if you’re not going to wear it on a daily basis.
Also, my nightguard was covered by insurance, so I didn’t pay for much out of pocket.
Anon
I purchased one through my dentist as well and only have one thing to add–make sure you store it in a safe place if you have pets! The dentist’s office warned me that they’re a favorite chew toy among dogs, and I thought I would avoid that. Oops! It turns out that I pop it out in my sleep sometimes, and the dog always manages to find it. That’s a really expensive chew toy.
Experienced
Ugh, I’ve been struggling with the same. My dentist recommended the $500 device, but on the heals of $10k worth of dental work over 2 yrs (don’t ask), I’m disinclined to have to spend anything. My dentist advises that the over-the-counter devices can actually make the grinding and other conditions requiring the moutguard WORSE. I’ll likely buy the $500 piece, but not for a while. I’m trying to do some other things like no caffeine in the afternoon and relaxation techniques. My insurance won’t cover any of the implement.
EE
I too used to grind my teeth, and started to chip my front teeth from the grinding. My husband was in dental school at that stage and made me a cheap mouthguard to protect my teeth from further damage. However, that did nothing to relieve the grinding, which was very hard on my TMJ. I reached a point where the muscles connecting my jaw to my skull were so tense and knotted that I was unable to open my jaw (it was rather scary). I ended up having to see a specialist and getting the expensive mouthguard. It was totally worth it. The expensive mouthguard will be fitted to your teeth and bite to minimize grinding. My insurance paid for most of the mouthguard; I’d look into whether yours would as well.
Sarah
I bought the expensive nightguard (I think my insurance covered some of it). Apparently, I grind my teeth REALLY REALLY hard because I cracked it–the first night I had it–into two pieces. I haven’t used it since because I’m afraid the little piece is going to pop off and I’ll choke to death in my sleep. Sigh. I still haven’t figured out my next step but I’ve been googling biofeedback methods of dealing with grinding.
Sharon
I continue to wonder – are those of you who work in really conservative offices or settings with conservative dress codes (no peep-toes, restrained jewelry, etc.) the same people who wear this stuff to the office? Because I continue to think that these kinds of dresses are very young-looking, and are cute for those in creative fields, but I don’t envision them at the same offices where people are wearing conservative suits. These dresses still say either “after work” or casual to me.
Anon, a mouse!
I would wear this style to the office, but in a heavier fabric and a higher neck.

The Super 120s and crepe are catalog only, but sometimes the Super 120s line shows up in top stores. If anyone tries on any of these dresses, please report back!
Legally Brunette
I really like that first dress and it seems like it would be flattering on the pear shapes among us.
I’m not a fan of that last one though. I can clearly see the model’s armpit, which is not a pretty look.

If the first dress had 2-3 inches higher neckline and a 2-3 inches longer skirt, it would be my ideal dress.
SF Bay Associate
Potentially agreed about the neckline of #1, but I suspect the hemline will be fine, as there is no way my legs are as long as the model’s, and there should be some ability to let out the hem. J.Crew’s customer service also has all the measurements of the clothes, so if interested, one could call and get the shoulder to hem measurement in a given size.

Finally, a more figure-friendly dress!

I bought this dress at the beginning of the year in purple and I LOVE it. I honestly don’t know where all this negative feedback is coming from. It’s very flattering, the perfect weight and length (although it does require a cami) and I receive at least one compliment every single time I wear it.
