My son has very sensitive hearing, so I’ve been down a million rabbitholes for what the best earplugs are — people rave about these hi-fidelity earplugs.
If you’re bothered by noise or have a ton of concerts to go to, these are apparently the best you can buy. I like that they come with a little carrying case, also, as well as multiple sizes of plastic for a perfect, and comfortable, fit.
They’re $24, at Amazon. Vibes High Fidelity Concert Earplugs

Must-dos in Tulsa? An attorney in my firm will be there later this week and will have most or all of Friday and Friday evening free. She’ll be at an airport hotel but can get to the downtown or wherever is recommended by Lyft. Recs for good veg/pescatarian-friendly restaurants? Museums or other sites? Friendly bars for a middle-age solo woman traveler?
Thanks.
Anon
If she has time, it’s an easy drive to the Mercantile!
Jules
I’m not sure that’s her cup of tea, but maybe – I’ll pass it along. Thanks!
Ellen
There is a great restaurant there called Fleming’s. It is a high-class chain just like Morton’s or Ruth’s Chris is in the East. If you must, I think you can get Salmon and other seafood and veggies there, if you are not a steak lover, but I would go for the Rib-Eye, b/c I LOVE Steak! YAY!!!
As far as things to do, I don’t recall much there, other than the food. I ate at some other places, which were very good, but I forgot the names of those places. FOOEY!
Sunflower
Philbrook Museum is lovely.
Sunflower
And the main museum (there’s also a satellite downtown) is open until 9:00 p.m. on Friday.
Anon
The Philbrook Museum is great. There’s a massive free park called the Gathering Place if she likes to walk/be outdoors. There are also Route 66 attractions nearby if she’s into that.
Jules
Thanks for these suggestions!
Seattle question
I will be in Seattle for business during the last week of September. What are the evening temperatures at that time of year? I’m planning on bringing jeans and flats for casual wear, since I’ll have the evenings to myself – but what to wear on top? Will it be cool enough to wear a light merino turtleneck? Or will I be better off in a T-shirt? Thanks!
Anon
I think you’re going to have to check the weather before you go and pack based on that.
GCG
A merino turtleneck is probably too much. T-shirt is likely better for that time of year but you might still want a light jacket or cardigan or something.
Anon
A t-shirt at night in Seattle in late September? I’d be freezing.
SeattleLayers
Key to Seattle (and PNW) comfort is layers. For day I would do a shirt topped with cardigan or light pullover and also a light rain jacket/windbreaker. Seattle is surrounded by water so it can get drafty. Night time the turtleneck plus hooded light jacket should be fine (in case of sprinkling).

Love these!! I did some damage to my ears in my youth and decided not to risk further damage and bought these. I wore them to a concert on their maiden voyage and it was the first concert ever for me with no issues. The music sounded great — just not quite so “up to 11” as most concerts are — and could hear people talking easily. In fact, during the concert when normally you have to scream at the people next to you and they still can’t hear you, I could hear the people next to me easily and even at a normal/non-screaming volume. One small con is that I put them in before the concert and found it a smidge weird when I was talking. Luckily they are really easy to take out and put in, so I took them out and popped them back in when the music started. I appreciated the different sizes, too, and not have to guess when ordering if my ear canals were smaller or average or larger! Seriously, can’t recommend enough for a not expensive product. (One more thing if it matters, they are really small and the little stem is clear, so you can’t really see them in. When I took them out, some people were surprised I had them in. I would wear neon orange ones because I don’t care but if it’s something that matters to you, it’s a plus.)

I would love to get some higher-quality (aka not disposable) earplugs but I’m not sure if they would be suitable for me. I normally wear earplugs for sleeping to block snoring noise. Would these help for that? They seem designed to let voices and speaking through… Also, with the orange earplugs, I can wear them for a couple weeks before they lose their “spring” and I need to replace with a fresh pair. Would the same be true of these types of more permanent earplugs? Finally, would they be comfortable for sleeping or does the stem stick out a lot? Thank you!
nutella
No, these are not for sleeping. They are a hard plastic inside- so the stem sticks out and if you slept on your side, I don’t think the inner plastic bulb would be comfortable on your ears. And correct, they are not no-noise earplugs, they are designed for you to hear and to hear clearly – just not SO INTENSE! I don’t sleep with a snorer, but I would stick with your disposable orange foamy ones unless someone else has a better recommendation.
May
A very gentle word of caution here; I used the orange foamy noise cancelling earplugs to sleep next to a snorer. I’ve even used them at work, and they are quite effective. They also seem quite safe and easy to remove.
I was a little over-enthusiastic with them and pushed them really far in. That’s wasn’t smart; unbeknownst to me, I’d had some hardened wax in one ear which then got pushed against my eardrum, was formally diagnosed as ‘impacted’ and needed to be syringed out.
Minor inconvenience only; just saying, use them, put them in, by all means, but don’t go overboard when pushing them in place!
Good luck!

Thinking of going to New Orleans for 2 days (weekdays) in early/mid Dec. when it’s all decorated for Christmas (which I imagine happens after Thanksgiving at the latest). Must dos? I’m not a party person, much more of a walk around — look at pretty buildings, go into shops, when I get tired get a coffee and a baked good and sit — type of person. Which is why my feeling is it may be better to do a 2 day trip on the weekday than be there over a Friday/Sat night. Hotel recs? I’m happier with larger luxury hotels — not B&Bs or apt rentals.
Anon
100% stay at The Roosevelt. It is stunning normally, but during Christmas, it’s just beyond gorgeous! It’s probably THE most popular lobby in the city. You can g**gle the following events and try to time your trip:
– Luna Fete
– Free Christmas Concerts in St. Louis Cathedral
– Celebration in the Oaks (I would think a week night would be less crowded).
– Preservation Resource Center Holiday Home Tour (SO! Fun to peek inside some of the fancy Uptown homes)
Alternatively, the Windsor Court also does a nice, but subdued holiday display and their Christmas high tea is lovely. Enjoy your trip!
Gail the Goldfish
+1 to the Roosevelt for decorations. I was there the week after Thanksgiving one time and the lobby is gorgeous (it was also surprisingly cheap)
SC
Anon @4:18 has great recs. I’ll add, if you go in very early December, the Algiers bonfire. (I’d probably go the weekend of Luna Fete and the Holiday Home Tour though.)
I’d say 50% stay at the Roosevelt, 50% stay at the Ritz. Last year, the Ritz lobby was honestly even more stunning than the Roosevelt, and it’s less crowded. Also, if you go on a weekend, the Roosevelt has teddy bear teas, so the lobby gets mobbed with families.
It’s not specifically Christmas, but the sculpture garden in City Park is my new must-do activity. They expanded it this year, and it is stunning. You can check it out before it closes, eat dinner, and go to Christmas in the Oaks. Also not specifically Christmas, but getting a drink in the French 75 bar is great (if you drink alcohol).
Anon
SC are you me?! (Anon at 4:18) I love the French 75 bar! ;) I haven’t been to the expanded sculpture garden, so I’ll have to check it out!
Also, OP, if you do the sculpture garden and Celebration in the Oaks, there are a bunch of nearby places for dinner, but Ralph’s on the Park is right across the street and is a classic.

Anyone else hate coffee dates? Nothing kills any spark of romance for me like sitting down in a brightly lit cafe for an informational interview. Feels inappropriately alcohol focused to be like “but no srsly though can we do a bar” but ughhhh.
Anon
YES. Also lunch or a walk in the park, or any of those. Rarely lead to anything. I don’t even drink much on a regular basis but something about meeting in a dimly lit bar for a drink feels more “date-like” to me.

Aunt Jamesina
Ugh, I forgot about this blog. Her coffee date post isn’t too bad (although I would absolutely HATE if somebody asked me on an “adventure” date, not because I don’t otherwise engage in those activities, but because first dates make me nervous and an adventure date would feel overwhelming on top of it PLUS I like to actually talk on a first date), but her posts are very know-it-all and absolutist. Take a look at her post on dressing as microaggressions for Halloween.
Anonymous
Wow! You weren’t kidding. The superiority is absolutely painful to wade through on some of those posts.
anon
Ditto. I’m NOT nervous about first dates but please don’t ask me on some date that you think is a fun adventure. Ask me to get a drink. In a bar, or dimly lit restaurant bar. Not coffee, not juice, not whatever the cheaper alternative to a drink is. Preferably not dinner, to be honest. I usually know within the first 30 seconds if there is no chance or maybe a chance for a second date. I’d rather it be a one-hour ordeal to verify that versus a two-hour nightmare.
Flats Only
Yeah – ouch! I only skimmed the one post, but my god she sounds so obnoxious.
Never too many shoes...
I just hate read that blog for half an hour. That girl is insufferable. She actually used the term “kiss rape”. Ewww.
Anon
What’s your point? Are you arguing that non-consensual kissing isn’t sexual assault?
Anon
Yeah I don’t really understand the criticism of this. Her friend was forcibly kissed when she told the guy to stop. It isn’t rape but it is sexual assault and certainly seems worth complaining about publicly.
Anon
I had all my first dates at bars. Or really restaurants that had bars, so the bar part of the restaurant.
Anonymous
Update: the coffee shop he wanted to go to was closed, so we are getting wine
January
Hey, that’s a win! Cheers!
Anon
What are non-drinkers supposed to do? Or even light drinkers? When I was doing online dating seriously, I was meeting guys at least twice a week. I don’t want to drink alcohol that much.
Anon
Dinner date. Art museum.

Anyone have experience with underwear from Muji or Everlane? Thoughts? TIA!
ER
I’m a big fan of Everlane’s. It’s very thin, so I have almost no VPL. Does not ride up. Much better than Gap Body (my previous regular-wear underwear).
