Halogen ‘Night Shift’ Sheath DressOur daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We love this lightweight sheath dress. The color of the gray feels more spring than fall to us, and the flower applique on the belt helps that impression. (We're guessing the belt can be removed pretty easily if you don't like the look, although you might try to save the flower to wear as a brooch.)  We'd wear it with a structured jacket or, perhaps, a cardigan (the yellow cashmere one from Banana Republic that we featured week or so ago, for example). It's $118 at Nordstrom (which just began a shoe clearance, incidentally). 1. love this, though not the belt. I’d wear it with either a skinny black belt or a wide belt in a color (red, or maybe the purple one featured yesterday). A very well cut sheath dress!

  2. Love it! I think it would look great with a yellow belt for spring. I’d do a skinny belt, but that’s just my preference based on what looks good on me. But weren’t there some recent comments about the questionable quality of Halogen clothing?

    1. I think both Halogen and Semantiks (Nordstrom’s other store line) are way overpriced for their quality. I would rank them far below Banana Republic/J. Crew/Ann Taylor in quality.

I do like their styling and fit though – if you have a Nordstrom’s Rack around you, I’ve got some great bargains on both brands there, with most pieces being under $50.

  3. I LOVE this dress, but am I the only one who looks bad in belts? It seems impossible to find a sheath dress that doesn’t have a belt. Belts cinch my waist, which is good, but make my hips look bigger by comparison, which is not so good.

Sadie – Halogen quality is ok. It’s definitely not as good as the Classiques Entier brand at Nordstrom. My sense is that the price will go down eventually, but it’s a bit high right now considering the quality.

    1. v neck AND cap sleeves! love it. so much better if you want to take off your blazer or cardigan

  4. I love this and can never pass up a well made sheath dress – they’re really versatile (think of all the different things you can do and create different outfits: belts, brooches, necklaces, cardigans, blazers, etc)! Great pick!

  5. I don’t like a sheath dress, but a beltless sheath dress is better than one with a belt. To me, this dress looks cheap (and is). There is simply not enough fabric in it for a daytime dress. What happens when you sit down? Or when you reach up? Buying a dress that does not look quite right and relying on a jacket to (partly) cover it up is not a good idea.

    1. That’s interesting, Anne. I find that, as long as the length is appropriate to begin with, dresses behave in a manner comparable to skirts, at least on me. When I sit down, I comport myself as I do in a skirt. I wear sleeveless shells under suits from time to time, and in those instances rely on a suit jacket to cover my arms. Hence, I have found well-crafted sheath dresses a pleasant addition to the work wardrobe.

    2. Whether it looks cheap or not is hard to judge online, and considering the answer to your questions is probably “the dress appears an inch or so shorter than when you are standing perfectly still” — I see no need to sound the alarms. This is why people do the “sit test” and touch the fabric before cutting off the tags… I think were it up to you, we’d all be sporting the New Look at work :)

and it’s not that the dress doesn’t “look quite right” and therefore needs to be hidden by a layer… it’s that in most offices, sleeveless is not an option because of both temperature and appropriateness. It’s hard to find dresses with sleeves to begin with, and they are less versatile — many more outfit possibilities than you’d have with a dress that already has sleeves.

Great neckline on this one, too – no worries when bending over, and it highlights the collarbone perfectly!
