Wednesday’s TPS Report: Pleated Ponte Knit Sheath Dress
Nov. 2024 Update: The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is over for the year, and we don't yet know when the 2025 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale will be. The below content is about the 2010 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Nordstrom has a ton of cute dresses in the $80ish range during its anniversary sale. Today we're liking this ponte knit sheath dress from Adrianna Papell. The scooped neckline is flattering, while the pleats from the empire waist strikes us as new — it almost seems like a modern rendition of a Joan dress on Mad Men. Love. It's available in “chianti” (pictured) as well as a deep “arctic” blue. Was $118, currently marked to $78.90. Adrianna Papell Pleated Ponte Knit Sheath Dress

I’ve had this on my cart since the anniversary sale started :) Today I’m wearing a similar dress (with the stomach pleats plus pockets which I don’t think this has) from Ann Taylor Loft. This one looks much better. While this dress won’t make your stomach look flat by any means, the way that the fabric hangs conceals quite a bit and I think it’s very flattering.
I’m wearing the same dress from Ann Taylor Loft today, and I’m considering buying this. I love the color, and I like the crewneck instead of the cowl that the Ann Taylor dress has.
question re: pleats.
I have a relatively flat stomach but sometimes pleats on skirts, especially high waisted ones, make it look otherwise. I would be afraid this is dress would make for one of those times — do you find the similar pleats on your dress to contribute to this problem or are they flattering of that area?
I find the dress flattering, because the way it’s constructed makes it (to me, at least), makes it clear that the fabric is folded, not that my stomach is stretching it. I think from the front the pleats look fine, but from the side they do create a bit of volume. I counter it by layering a long-ish cardigan over the dress and cinching at my waist with a belt to show it’s the dress, not my tummy pushing the dress out.
I recently ordered a dress with a similar cut from Jones New York and it looked terrible for that reason — like I was hiding something I didn’t have to hide! Also, as SS mentioned below, the cut in the back swooped over my butt in a way that made it look twice as large as it is, and kinda dumpy. But it was a different fabric, and the pleats started a little higher, so maybe this one’s different.
I got a Calvin Klein dress like this a couple years ago at Nordstrom. That cut, including the pleats, totally makes it look like you are pg and not telling yet, and like everybody else said, does nothing good for the rear view either. Not sure how the cardigan thing would work – I did that a couple of times with my dress and it just looked like I was wearing the dress to hide the belly + a cardigan.
All of that said, I still have the dress and occasionally wear it – it is definitely on the frump end, but super comfy and easy. So if it’s raining out, I know I am not gonna see anyone except the officemates, etc, I will throw it on. Not every day can be sartorially perfect in my world! For $80, the worse that happens is it’s a little like ‘office pajamas’ – if you are lucky maybe it turns out to flatter. And if you are early pg or planning to get that way, well, it’s perfect!
I bought a CK dress this year (online) that does the same thing. I probably could have gone down a full size, but I guess when I have the time I’ll try to get it altered. I really don’t know if that will help though, because I’ve tried pulling it in at the waist and it just gapes elsewhere. It really would be a great second trimester maternity dress.
Frankly I think it might look different depending on whether you already look lean otherwise. If you look lean (face/arms especially) this dress will not make you look preggers IMO.
Thanks all! I think I may order & see. Worse comes to worse, I return it to the Nordstrom Rack near me that I now know takes returns!
Hmmm. That is the problem I have with the dress – it makes a figure that otherwise would (does) look “lean” NOT. Of course, if one is feeling less (or more) than ‘lean’ on a given day, this dress is a good, comfy solution.
@AIMS: I have a skirt with similar pleats and it really has a slimming effect (I have a tiny pooch post C section). That said, my skirt is made of “suit” fabric and not jersey. But I should think this would serve to conceal tummy faults well.
My daughter and I together picked out a purple Calvin Klein dress a few months ago that looked very similar to this. She wore it to work and people commented on how “bright” it was. Are they crazy? Or does purple just have a vibe about it?
IMO they’re cray :)
LOL – that should be crazy obviously.
wearing a purple dress today and the only thing I find bright about it are the yellow shoes and accessories I’ve paired it with.
Love it! :)
Yeah, I think people are crazy. I think dark purple is a great “neutral.”
Does she normally wear darker neutrals like black or brown? Could be it’s just a comparison… and never underestimate the power of flourescent office lighting to distort :-(
Thank you. I feel my sanity return. I’m thinking now it’s maybe because she is a redhead, and the contrast is a little striking. Beautiful, but striking. Love the thought of yellow shoes avec. And yes, she usually wears blacks and creams.
Ah, that makes sense! There’s a redhead in my office who frequently wears purple, and despite the frequency the effect is still striking.
I can see this. I am also a redhead and no matter how dark a shade a pick, purple does not look like a neutral on me. Too much contrast. I love to wear it, though.
They’re crazy (or jealous that they cannot pull off purple:)
I have been considering buying this dress for ages, but wish it came in more colors. I like the colors they have but I can’t pull off ‘chianti’ and already have a blue sheath dress.
This looks nice at first glance, but dresses with this cut sometimes make my butt look huge. Really cute though and nice color
I LOVE this. I keep feeling my keyboard wanting to type N-O-R-D……
Ditto. Must resist…..
This. =) No more shopping this month!
Sorry to go OT so early, but I have a question for you guys about super bright colors at work. I recently bought a shell that is just about the brightest yellow I’ve ever seen. I love how happy the color is! Today I put it together with an icy gray skirt and navy cardigan and I’m really loving the combo, but do you think such a bright/statement color is inappropriate for the office?
Not in my office. I am still mad that I spilled something black on the sleeve of my bright yellow J.Crew cardigan from last season. This year’s yellow just doesn’t compare!
M–Is it the 3/4 sleeve v-neck cardigan they made last year, with silk plackets down the button panel? (I think they called it “ethereal”?) If so, condolences. I have that one too–got it in bright yellow on impulse–and I would be crushed if anything happened to it!
BTW I think it’s totally appropriate. I often wear it over a navy dress or with gray.
No, I think that it can be great paired with neutrals like you have done. My “uniform” is gray or black pants or skirt, bright shell or top, neutral jacket or cardigan. I think your outfit sounds divine!
Not at all! I think the color is perfectly appropriate assuming everything else about it is!
Agree! As long as it doesn’t also have a super low neckline or light up, you’re good!
totally fine – the office doesn’t have to be all navy and black.
Fine and sounds adorable! I love bright yellow with a slightly lighter grey; that’s been one of my favorite combos of late.
I always get so happy to see folks in bright colors in the office. Rock it!
Me too =)
I’m in DC, land of the black and gray, and I wear really bright colors several times a week. I’m from the west coast where bright colors are so much more acceptable, but I refuse to wear neutral colors that just make me feel drab and blah. I’m wearing a bright orange/red blouse today, and I have lots of bright sweaters and blazers that I wear and always get compliments on. As long as you pair it with neutrals and don’t have more than one really bright color on, you’re fine.
I’m in DC too and do the same thing. I now have a collection of bright shells and other work appropriate shirts that I wear with neutral colored pants and skirts.
I think this sounds perfectly appropriate! And perfectly cute.
On the topic of how fabulous yellow is, I found this adorable Kate Spade laptop bag last night. Love!!! http://www.zappos.com/kate-spade-tompkins-square-billie-citronella?zlfid=111
Love! Although it really bothers me that they don’t put feet on the bottom. For $375, I want tiny metal feet that probably cost like $2.
That fits a laptop, really?
Based on the dimensions it would fit a small to medium laptop. Probably not one of those 17-inch screen, 10 lbs monsters though….
It just seems like it wouldn’t fit much else! But it is super cute – I will have to find out what size my Macbook is when I get home tonight.
I have a couple yellow tops that I love and wear often. I even pair them with bright blue. I think so long as the top itself is office-appropriate the color doesn’t matter. It’s fine to look feminine and bright.
I love a pop of color against a mostly neutral background. I think its a great combo.
Sounds good to me. Many people steer clear of yellow but in small doses (or large if you’re brave) it looks happy and welcoming! Go for it. Your other colours sound sober enough that you can ‘afford’ to have a yellow splash.
Love love love this dress. Gorgeous! I’m resisting the Nordstrom sale though…
:(
Love this dress and love Nordstrom sale. J Crew also has good sale!
Banana Republic is having another 40% off day (+ free shipping for orders > $50). I used one of the following codes (can’t remember which), but feel free to try the other:
D6B8LKJZVV33
BZBZ43Y7LT1L
Here is another code (please reply and let people know if you use it) – LZWR9P4K8NYY
Just used to get a suit (I need tall sizes and have to order online) – thanks!
You can also get free shipping at Banana Republic if your purchase is over $50 with the code: BRFREE50. It works with the 40% off discoutn code as well.
Isn’t J.Crew’s sale “Final Sale”? I hate final sale anything.
If you buy something final sale and end up not liking it, you can almost always sell it in a consignment shop (or ebay) and make your money back.
The size chart says I’m a 4… does anyone know if a 6 will be OK?
I have a similiar dress in the same brand in a 6 and it doesn’t seem that large compared to other sixes, if that helps…
I’m a size 4, and whether a size 6 would work depends on your bust size, I think. I find that this brand is generous in the bust, and a size 6 would be really baggy for me on top.
Pretty dress! I actually bought this in the arctic blue a few days ago. Just waiting for my Nordie’s sale order to get to me….
Me too!
Tracking showed mine is on the truck and out for delivery.
If I circle our reception area one more time, I think the receptionist is going to think I’m stalking her. :)
ooh that’s gorgeous

Love that one and Kat’s pick today. Also LOVE the Mad Men reference – so excited for the new season to start Sunday. I would KILL for Joan Holloway’s wardrobe (and for Christina Hendricks’s body to wear it on).
I HAVE that kind of body and it’s a pain to dress. Really.
This is a sweet little dress, very young-girlish. I had exactly this dress when I was in middle school. Not since high school have I worn anything of this type, which I associate with flattering a 13 year old figure. I would not even consider it. Very retro, very childish.
75, I love how we can always rely on you to bring the crazy.
+1 Great wording, anon!
75, I’d be fascinated to know where you went to high school.
I suspect that with my gray hair and “breeder’s hips” this will not look childish on me.
75, I always appreciate your comments because, although I honestly never agree with you, your wordsmithing and imagery is delightful. And I’m actually curious: what *do* you like? Do you wear a very small range of clothes?
This is a great office basic, but it seems like some variation of this dress (knee length sheath, cap sleeve) is posted once a week. A little variation would be nice.
I don’t see how this is a sheath (which the online dictionary defines as a “close-fitting dress”).
Well, thank GAWD you looked it up in the online dictionary.
Pray tell, how is this NOT a sheath, almighty one?
A sheath falls straight down. It is not cinched at the waist, with pleats therefrom.
I agree that some version of a dress is featured once a week, but complaining about that would be like complaining about office skirts not having enough diversity. They’re office clothes highlighted for being well-made, attractive & appropriate — there’s only so much diversity that they can encompass.
I think LL answered your question, but really, was all that snark necessary? English is not my first language so I looked it up — sue me.
Anon – part of the joy of this site is that women are able to ask questions and get answers from other women with a certain level of maturity not found at most fashion blogs. Please refrain from name calling and hostile sarcasm in the future – it’s not welcome on this site.
The name of this dress includes the word “sheath .” :-)
Oh, but it’s wrong! Kinda (almost) like calling the suit of the week a “suit” is stretching the definition :)
Maybe, but it may explain why Anon used the term. :-)
i’m convinced that designers use words like “sheath” not really to describe what one might think of as a sheath, but when they’re tired of using the word “dress”. while i personally wouldn’t classify this as a sheath, i can’t think of a good term more specific than “dress”.
Love this dress and love the color, but I doubt this will be a good fit for me.
Has anyone tried on either of these Nordstrom dresses, which are also part of the Anniversary Sale? I bought them a few days ago online, as I haven’t had the chance to make it to the store yet. Any thoughts on fit?

I actually bought the petite version of the Calvin Klein dress last weekend and love it. It’s very flattering; cut on the smaller side (but I’m small, so that works for me). My only complaint is that it’s a little shorter on me than I might have liked (and I’m 5′, so that’s really saying something) — it comes to about 2″ above the knee for me — but it’s completely work-appropriate, and looks tidy and nice without being frumpy. I think you’ll like it!
I LOVE these and am SO SAD I am on a shopping ban and cannot have them. So glad to see dresses with sleeves are coming back in style!
Good to know, thanks!
And to Anon, a mouse — I really admire your restraint. I have often told myself I should be on a shopping ban. I think I might to do it AFTER the anniversary sale. :)
I love how we all adore the same dresses! Trying to decide whether to buy them…glad for the feedback on the petite size, as I was wavering between regular vs. petite.
I just blew my entire shopping budget for the summer on a purse (which I love). At the very least I cannot shop again until the new purse smell wears off (although I made an exception for the Barrie Pace blowout).
I’ve been having a general frustration with dresses lately. For some reason I can never find any work appropriate dresses that look good on me. I have a small bust and wider hips, and most work dresses are sheaths and don’t do my figure any favors. I wear skirts pretty much every day, but I’ve been very frustrated with all of my most recent dress purchases, all of which have been returned. I would love to throw on a dress and be done with it, but I’m not having luck finding one that works. I don’t have an odd size either (I’m a size 4). Curious if anyone else out there wears a lot of skirts but not dresses.
Hi twin! I’m also a 4 on bottom and a 2 on top, so finding dresses is a neverending source of frustration, plus frankly the self esteem damage coming from every dressmaker in the world thinking that my boobs should be bigger than they are given my hip size. ARGH. I have yet to find a dress I can wear to work.
After finding no dresses at the Nordstrom anniversary sale that fit, I finally bit the bullet and signed up for a personal shopper. Considering the amount of money I spend at that store, and the little time I have, I probably should have done this years ago. I explained my dress problem in my first call with the PS, and she was like, that’s what our tailors are for. We’ll see. I will report back, appointment is 7/31.
You can solve this problem with VS – the bras that are guaranteed to give you a 2 cup size increase! When you have larger hips / small bust this VS effect just looks balanced, not huge. (But when colleagues see you at the gym in your work-out bra – it is pretty clear that your office look is enhanced)!
Is this meant to be a joke?
Because I really hope the solution to “I can’t find flattering dresses for my figure” isn’t “buy a padded bra!”
Agreed. That’s a really insensitive comment. There’s nothing wrong with me and my small bust. If someone wants to wear two cup sizes of padding, good for them. I’m honestly glad there are options to suit everyone’s preferences. But for me, the idea that I have to wear a very padded bra in order to get dressed in the morning is just as offensive as I would imagine it is for a plus sized woman to be told to lose weight in order to wear cuter clothes.
I also refuse to shop at VS. I worked there in college and object to their business practices. Their bras are cheaply made, and I also object to spending money at a company designed to make me feel inadequate, where most of the bras don’t come in my sizes, and the ones that do have tons of padding, because again, if I have my small bust, I must want to bump it up to attempt to appear to be a “good” size. I’d much rather spend my money at Lula Lu or Nordstrom, where I feel good shopping.
Clothes should match our bodies. Our bodies shouldn’t have to change to match clothes. The problem is with the manufacturers and the media, not me.
If you heard a noise, SF Bay Associate, it was me cheering :) Great comment!
Agree with SF Bay Associate. If women want to wear padded bras of course that’s fine, but no one should feel like they have to in order to look attractive or to fit into normal clothing.
As another small busted one, I have that VS bra. It’s definitely quite padded but there’s no way that the bra gives you a 2 cup increase. I’m a 32B and with the bra on, I am maaaaybe a 32C (but even that is doubtful). Still, I end up wearing that bra quite often because it’s the most padded one I have.
Wow- a lot of false assumptions there. I am about 2 sizes smaller up top but still wear a D cup. I can think of some words to describe how I might look going up to a DDD, but “balanced” would not be one of them.
To Not a Fan, I find the best sheath dresses for me are often the ones that have a belt or some detailing in the midsection to highlight my small waist. I also have a long torso, so getting the widest area to fall in the right place on my hips can be a problem.
We really are twins! I’m a size 2 on top, size 4 on bottom as well, and to boot, I’m also from the SF Bay Area. :) I’m now on the east coast though….
I too spend waaaaaaay too much money at Nordstrom, so I probably should sign up a personal shopper as well. It’s a free service, right? Please report back on your experience, I would love to hear. I had one personal shopper experience at Lord & Taylor that was really bad (she put me in all of these very fuddy duddy clothes), so I’ve been hesitant to sign up again.
So no good dress at the Nordstrom sale, huh? I bought a few dresses online but I’ve been so swamped at work that I haven’t made it to the store yet.
Did you ever try this dress in the store? It’s not part of the Anniversary sale but I found it surprisingly flattering for my pearish shape. The ruffles add some weight to the bust area, and I need all the help that I can get in that dept. I’m waiting for it to go on sale:
http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3031938/0~2376780~6009391~6014865~6014868?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6014868&P=1
Nothing flattered me at the sale, unfortunately. I’ll definitely try this one on though, and then also stalk it until a sale! We really are twins :). Thanks!
+1 for 2 up top, 4 bottom, and in SF Bay area. :)
Absolutely! I almost always wear a skirt/top/jacket or cardi combo. It’s very hard for me to find dresses and have sewn the wrap part shut on wrap dresses whose fabric I”ve adored. Seems like so many of the dresses just don’t flatter me right now and I cannot wear sheaths. IMO, skirts lend to many more combinations and variety … on the bright side.
Have you tried tailoring? I don’t mean to be insenstive but that’s my solution & it’s an easy enough, simple & inexpensive fix.
I also recommend talbots dresses for the smaller on top folks, a lot of them are more suited to the small on top shape and don’t even need to be taken in.
I’ve gotten a fair number of dresses tailored, and then end up with arm holes that cut into my shoulders because of how much fabric had be taken in from the sides. so sad. tailoring is an option, but not always successful and it can be hard to figure out what can be tailored easily and what can’t.
I believe Nordstrom offers free tailoring on full-priced items. It shouldn’t be too complicated to take in the bust.
I’m another 2 on top and 4 on bottom. I like the fit of this year’s J. Crew Emmaleigh dresses (their propensity to wrinkle is another issue–I’d avoid the cotton, but I like my Super 120s wool in black). I order them in a 2 and they fit perfect on top and have just enough room to graze over my hips. Depending on your height, they may come up a bit short when you sit, but I fix this by pulling it as snugly down as I can when I sit (while smoothing it so the back slits don’t lay funny and wrinkle). I also keep my legs under the keyboard tray/desk and at lunch the table + my napkin, so it’s not really a problem other than that I get cold. The length is fine when standing.
Here’s the Super 120s dress: http://www.jcrew.com/AST/Browse/WomenBrowse/Women_Shop_By_Category/suiting/super120s/PRDOVR~24155/24155.jsp
I should add–my backside that is the primary reason I have to size up on bottom, and mine are not tight in the back at all. I think they must have padded panties or a g-force fan on the model to get that bootylicious look because the dress is not cut like that.
Pear shaped 2/4 on top and 6 on bottom here. I have found that I can only wear 3 types of dresses to work –
1. wrap dresses (sized up to fit my hips, then tightened up top with the wrap belt);
2. empire waist shift-like dresses (I have this in purple: http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3015709/0~2376780~6009391~6016489~6016492~6016495?mediumthumbnail=Y&origin=category&searchtype=&pbo=6016495&P=1);
3. or polyester blend shift-like dresses like the JCPenney one featured on here a few weeks ago.
The Papell dress above might worked for pear shaped girls because of the pleating at the empire waist. I would love to be able to wear a regular shift dress like the Banana Republic one featured a few days ago, but that is not possible without major ($50 and up) tailoring.
Another pear shaped gal here. Interesting to read your post. True wrap dresses usually don’t work on me because they are always too big in the bust area (the faux wrap dresses fit much better for some reason). And empire waist dresses aren’t my thing either because I have a small waist and love to emphasize it.
I wear both true and faux wrap dresses, depending on the brand/designer. I also like to show off my waist, and to do so in empire-waist dresses, I make sure the top is fitted and the empire waist doesn’t start too high (the few empire waist dresses I have have fitted bodices and almost tulip like skirts, if that makes any sense).
You could also try dresses with full/a-line skirts – you can buy to fit the top half and because of the fullness in the bottom it should fit well without having to size up, and will still show off a small waist. I tend to stay away from them because I feel too 50s house-wife in them, but some ladies can pull them off well.

2L, thanks for the great suggestions! I, too, am now in love with the Maggy London dress. I’m pear-shaped and have difficulty finding skirts that look good on me (my waist is not defined enough, I think) – but I think I can pull of a wrap / faux-wrap dress pretty nicely. Have never bought a dress online (am I the only one that is not on the boat for online shopping for clothes??) but this one might be my starting point! =) (Btw, Banana comes out with some awesome dresses, appropriate for the office, so if I find something online I’ll keep you posted)
I LOVE the Maggy London. I usually don’t like empire waists–I think sometimes they look too “bun in the oven.” But that is PERFECT. Very sleek and looks like the type of dress you could wear almost anywhere. Nice pick!
i agree – love that dress! has anyone bought it? i tried some dresses from that designer before and was less than impressed with the quality.
I have it and love it, and think the quality is great (especially since I got it off Ebay for $30) :)
I have the same problem. However, try the Banana dress if you have an opportunity. It suprisingly worked for me.
Is this site loading painfully, painfully slowly and with lots of errors for anyone else today?
Great dress! I like its simplicity and the pleating. I have one similar to that from Calvin Klein – another great place to find dresses for work. It also looks like it’s the perfect length and goes all the way to the knees! Of course, I’m rather tall, so it might not end up fitting quite like that on me.
Also – check out Nordstrom’s Rack for some great sales right now. Found a sheath dress this weekend!
I wish I had the same luck with Calvin Klein work dresses. I love them and own quite a few, but they always shrink about six inches when I sit down. I’m not sure what it is about the tailoring that does this, but it’s so frustrating!
Came across this gorgeous Maggy London cocktail dress online last night…

Absolutely stunning! Does anyone own this? Can you wear a strapless bra with it?
I absolutely love this dress.
