Something on your mind? Chat about it here. I've seen this blouse on a zillion bloggers, so I broke down and bought it — quality is about what you'd expect for a $27 blouse, but I like it. It's big and drapey, but fluid so it feels more flattering. I plan to wear it with leggings and skinny jeans on the weekend. It's available in a ton of colors and prints, sizes XS-XL, for $27 (it'll go back up to $42 after this weekend!). (I'm also keeping this top in the dark green — so so pretty! — but the regular, at least on my 5'4″ frame, is super, super long, so it's also a weekend top.) Reposting from this morning (I think I got to the morning thread too late):
I’m looking for pretty tops to wear under suits. The ideal top is made out of a natural woven fabric, not jersey or knits, and is not clingy. No buttons. Muted colors (although prints are good too). Short sleeves would be dreamy. Oh, and I’m plus-sized (in the 22 range) – so the Ravello top from Boden won’t work. Any suggestions? Help!

I just replied to your post on the other thread :)

Talbots pleat-neck blouse #A-163588 or A-162588 is the perfect under-suit blouse for me.
Also ruffle v-neck is good but sleeveless. c104587

I have a silk version of this from about 4 years ago and it’s nice. I might check out this version because it would be nice to have a blouse that did not require dry cleaning.
I was really disappointed with the Ravelllo top — got it in ivory and thought it looked cheap.
Katniss Everdeen
Thanks so much, ladies, that’s perfect. I just bought the pleat-neck top in two colors!
Alex M
I’m also plus sized and I like Talbot’s cotton shells. They have matching cardigans to make it a twinset, but the shell is great on its own!

One more shopping request: I’m also looking for a Nancy-Pelosi style pearl necklace, though I don’t want to spend more than a few hundred for it. Any tips on where to look? 22 inches would be perfect.
KittyKat
Maybe try etsy? Make sure the pearls are knotted on silk and lots of small jewelers let you pick out the clasp. When I’ve had friends commission this type of stuff I typically charge ~150-200.
MJ
I have one from Macy’s and if you catch them on a jewelry sale plus a weekend they have 25% off (which is almost any weekend), you can get one for under $200 for sure.
Basics
Majorica. You can buy them at major department stores (and duty free, sometimes, but who knows which styles your airport will have). I have purchased two sets of necklace/earrings at Nordstrom. I have worn them daily for years, and they are in great shape. The necklaces need to be restrung every couple years. They are heavy, so they drape nicely. Highly recommend.
Anonymous
I have a Majorica necklace from Nordstrom with baroque pearls in white, gray and champagne. I love it, I think it was $350? Can’t remember.

Fun shopping question for the day. What is your dream designer bag?
I thought mine was the Prada double-zip tote but I think the handles are too short to fit over my arms so that would get annoying quick.

I have far too many… Maybe the Saint Laurent Sac de Jour if I had to pick one right now.
I have the Prada saffiano double zip and absolutely love it – the size I got comes with a longer strap as well, so perfect for wearing on your shoulder or cross-body (in addition to satchel-style with the handles).

What are your favorite ways to waste less? I’ve always been a minimalist when it comes to fashion, etc, and I realized it’s because I don’t like to waste things. The question can apply to anything, not just fashion.
KittyKat
This is pretty much my passion so I know I’m crazy. No zip lock bags ever, only glass Tupperware, reusable linen vegetable bags (vs the clear plastic ones from the grocery store), the obvious reusable grocery bags, buying in bulk with less packaging (like from the bulk section), I like using all the vegetable so making stock from trimmings or using broccoli stems to make slaw, water bobble instead of buying water, steel cook ware and wooden spoons. I can’t think of more but over the years I’ve changed every part of my life to be more socially and environmentally responsible
anon
I hate Ziplocs!!! They are always a total waste. We have some, but now my husband knows he has to ask my permission to use one – permission is rarely granted. :)
I do most of the above (except the linen veggie bags – intrigued). I also use as little water as possible and keep the refrigerator door closed as much as possible. I turn off all the lights in my house when I’m not using them.
The one area I need to get better at is fashion. I buy nice quality and keep it for a really long time (my style has always been feminine and bright, so it works), but my closet is still pretty full.
anon
Also, when I have to use a paper cup, I save it and reuse it for a while. Weird, I know. I don’t recycle things at the office because I suspect it doesn’t actually get recycled; I take it home. When I’m on a walk, I pick up recyclable trash and put it in our bin if it’s pretty close to our house and not disgusting looking.
I’m excited to see what others post so maybe I can learn more ways to be crazy.
anon
Oh, another one: When I go to clothing stores or Sephora or places like that, I just decline a bag and put the item in my purse or diaper bag or whatever.
CountC
I am also intrigued by the linen veggie bags – at this point, I don’t use bags at all and the veggies go straight into my basket.
Things I do: don’t buy new plastic (I do admit to having some in the house, I wash and reuse the few ziplocs I have), save all glass food jars (honey, salad dressing, etc.) and reuse them as food containers, use my containers from home for bulk food, use rags to clean, don’t buy bottled water (use my glass water bottle), pick up trash/recycling when I see it out running, use what I do have until it is completely dead (holey clothes, gross towels, etc.), and donate what is appropriate/repurpose items to barn use.
Things I am going to do in the future: compost and grow some of my own food when I move back into my house,
KittyKat
Also none of this laminate/plastic furniture stuff. Only steel, glass, natural fibres like cotton and linen, wood, and bamboo. Not only does it last longer but it can be recycled or composted when you’re done
Sydney Bristow
I’m having flashbacks to my childhood when we had to wash and reuse ziplock bags.
anonymous
I still do that….
Anonymous
I still do it too. I live in a bug-heavy part of the country so all open bags of food have to go in ziploc. It’s just not practical with space constraints to have tupperware for every single thing.
tesyaa
I almost never wash them out, but I do reuse ziplocs where I can shake out the crumbs. I think you only get points if your mom washed and reused aluminum foil.
NYNY
Growing up, my family not only washed and reused aluminum foil, but also washed and reused all plastic bags and plastic containers food came in. Bread bags and margarine tubs were the big ones. And in fact, I’m pretty sure my parents still do this.
I have a plastic bag system in place. Unwashed produce goes in reused plastic bags which are only washed when visibly soiled. If I need to store produce after washing it, it goes in glass storage containers if any are available, and a ziploc only if I’m out of storage options. I wash and reuse the ziplocs. I buy most of our produce at the farmers market on Saturdays, so I need to have a system.
Sydney Bristow
I don’t specifically remember anything about aluminum foil but we definitely reused all the plastic containers food came in. I still do that sometimes, but mostly just recycle everything because it is too many containers to ever use.
Runner 5
I use lots of zip-loc bags in order to reduce waste. I figure that using a ziplock bag is better than throwing out something that went bad quickly, or that I can’t reseal (half-open packets of sandwich ham, for example).
I also use them to put my phone in when I run.
anon
The point is to use Tupperware instead of ziploc.
Runner 5
Ah, I see! I would do that if I had enough fridge space, but sadly that’s not a possibility (tiny city centre kitchen; I can’t even stand a jar of marmelade upright on my fridge shelf)
anon
We exclusively use rags instead of paper towels, because it feels less wasteful. However, we have to wash them… and usually put them in the dryer (hello, DC humidity) so, not sure.
NOLA
I’ve had my own canvas grocery bags for years. Some stores struggle with that, but I grocery shop here at an independent where I choose my bagger and get in her line. My favorites right now are the sturdy ones from Target. My really old ones are starting to die.
I will get paper bags at Whole Foods but I re-use them to recycle my newspapers. Like others, I shake the crumbs out of the ziploc I put a bagel in or something and re-use it. I re-use plastic bags to take scooped litter to the garbage can but a lot of times, I just keep a tote in the back of the car and throw purchase in it as I’m shopping.
Unfortunately, because I live alone, I probably waste more food than I should, but I’ve really tried to think carefully about what I want to eat and will eat, so I waste less.
I try to use shop towels or microcloths for cleaning then just throw them in with my sheets or towels so I’m not doing a whole load of them.
Need to Improve
I hang a lot of things to dry on my drying rack rather than putting them in the dryer. Almost none of my clothes go in the dryer. Saves a ton of electricity and extends the life of the garment.
I use compostable bags for all my produce and compostable diapers.
Anon
Love this! Definitely buying linen veggie bags.
We compost our food waste and shop as much as we can at the farmer’s market/CSA.
Trying to buy less, but when we discard items I’m crazy about donating whatever I can – we have a lot of nice stuff so I give a lot away on craigslist free section (or for nominal amounts of money) so I can guarantee it goes to good use and is directed to someone who actually wants it!
Also try to buy used or very eco-friendly furniture, baby clothes, ect. For our baby shower, I asked for exclusively used items (such as hand-me-downs, old children’s books).
Trying to avoid air travel as much as possible. I really think it’s the worst way in which wealthy people contribute to climate change. It’s hard since all extended family lives far away, but trying to do less frequent and longer trips, and rethink the need for exotic vacations. I enjoy travel, but I’m trying to think about what’s really important (and I’m a little sick of people defining themselves by the cool places they’ve been anyway).
Eating mostly vegetarian as a family.
SFAttorney
You’re right that air travel is a huge contributor to climate change. I was therefore happy to see United intends to use some biofuels made of waste that have lower carbon emissions. Southwest and Virgin are also moving this direction.
I don’t think anyone mentioned recycling clothes (just buying less, which is great), but consider this:

Is there a way to do dry cleaning with less waste? I still want my clothes professional dry cleaned, but without all the accompanying trash.

You can recycle the plastic bags the same way you can recycle the plastic bags from the store and return the hangers to the dry cleaners.
Anon
I do that too. I also take vases back to florists.

This one is more general…but in order to buy anything new, my fiance and I have a shared google doc spreadsheet, and the item (if it’s not food or obvious drugstore thing, like deodorant) has to go on the spreadsheet so that it’s a planned purchase. Usually if it sits on the spreadsheet, we’ll also try to brainstorm whether we can substitute something we already have. For example, when we moved into our apartment, we thought we needed a couple end tables – we ended up using our old desks as end tables instead. In any case, the list helps us think more before buying things.
Argentina
Does anyone have any tips to share on either working in or traveling to Buenos Aires, Argentina? I’m doing a short assignment there and would love it if anyone has work experiences they can share, or even just general travel suggestions or recommendations for the city.

I love BA. My husband worked there for a few months and I visited for long stretches. Overnight laundry services are cheap and make life so much easier when you’re working there. If you have free time, there are overnight luxury buses to Mendoza. Montevideo is a nice day trip too.

Behind the Pink House, there is a history museum with the most amazing art installation. It’s a underground room (a wine cellar) painted to make you feel like you are underground with naked women swimming around you. Do not miss it – seriously. Stay in Recoleta or Palermo. Rent a swank apartment with a swank pool on the roof (should be easy to find and much cheaper than a hotel for you or your company.

So many posters have experiences with miscarriage, and I wanted to share what Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg posted to FB today:
Priscilla and I have some exciting news: we’re expecting a baby girl!
This will be a new chapter in our lives. We’ve already been so fortunate for the opportunity to touch people’s lives around the world — Cilla as a doctor and educator, and me through this community and philanthropy.
Now we’ll focus on making the world a better place for our child and the next generation.
We want to share one experience to start. We’ve been trying to have a child for a couple of years and have had three miscarriages along the way.
You feel so hopeful when you learn you’re going to have a child. You start imagining who they’ll become and dreaming of hopes for their future. You start making plans, and then they’re gone. It’s a lonely experience.
Most people don’t discuss miscarriages because you worry your problems will distance you or reflect upon you — as if you’re defective or did something to cause this. So you struggle on your own.
In today’s open and connected world, discussing these issues doesn’t distance us; it brings us together. It creates understanding and tolerance, and it gives us hope.
When we started talking to our friends, we realized how frequently this happened — that many people we knew had similar issues and that nearly all had healthy children after all.
We hope that sharing our experience will give more people the same hope we felt and will help more people feel comfortable sharing their stories as well.
Our good news is that our pregnancy is now far enough along that the risk of loss is very low and we are very hopeful.
Cilla and our child are both healthy, I’m extremely excited to meet her and our dog Beast has no idea what’s coming. In our ultrasound, she even gave me a thumbs up “like” with her hand, so I’m already convinced she takes after me.
We’re looking forward to welcoming her into the world and sharing more soon when she’s ready to come out and meet everyone!

That is so touching.

I think it is great that he and his wife have shared this. Agree that feeling that you can share openly is important. I also think that it’s important that we preserve respect for space to have a private life if and when we want to. Going through miscarriage can be painful, messy, miserable, and more– and while for some people that is when they may benefit from others’ awareness and support, for some having privacy about what is going on with your body may be preferred. I have plenty of friends and family who, when they are not feeling well, really want privacy and will reach out to those few trusted people they want to be close to- not the whole internet. Then there are plenty that want to share widely and create dialogue, express feelings, etc. Nothing wrong with either approach, it’s about what is right for the individual and family involved.

Yay! Weekend Open thread’s! I love Weekend Open thread’s and open white blouses like this one, but NOT for work b/c Frank would be stareing and doeing even less work then he usueally does. This is strictley for weekend wear with skinny jean’s! YAY!!
As for the OP, Zuckerberg’s p’ost is surely touching. I know how dificult it can be to have a baby and that is why I realy do NOT want to waste time with looser’s. I intend to get pregenant IMMEDIATELEY once married so that we can be sure to have a baby ASAP, then I will do it again within month’s so that my family can all be established and in school b/f I am 40. That way, I can have my day’s free to shop and schmooze with my freind’s and eat lunch in Chapaqua and then have my nanny go foodshoppeing and cook dinner for all of us and I can be the perfect wife for my husband. YAY!!!!! If ONLEY I can find a guy soon to make this happen! I want to make sure he is up for sex otherwise it will be a waste. I also have to make sure he is NOT shooting blanks. Myrna met a guy who has a vesectomy but still is great in bed. I am NOT sure how that could be but I am NOT a medical doctor. He may have some kind of implant. Whatever. I want a guy who is 100% real, as I am, and NO fake stuff. I intend to be a mom within month’s of finding and marrying the RIGHT guy. NO more Sheketovit’ses for ME! FOOEY!!!!!

I find it slightly distasteful that he’s using this very personal story to sell his company’s vision of making the world a more “open and connected” place. Maybe I’m totally off base.

I read it that way too. Have you read “The Circle”? I immediately thought of that.

YES THE CIRCLE. oh, how I loved that book and how uncomfortable it made me with my online presence.

Even if that’s true, it still produces a result that really does improve things for people, which I think does come from being all “open and connected” or whatever. I care less about the motives than I do about the outcome. If he’s shamelessly promoting his company and it ends up doing some good, then wonderful.

I need to replace my sadly quite worn Modalu Pippa in shark grey and another taupe bag so am on the hunt for a tote/shoulder leather (or saffiano) bag in grey or a pale brown/taupe, ideally with a zipper top and gold hardware. Look for a liberal man who is a feminist. Or, get them young and change them throughout the years. Bisexual men are especially prone to being more forward thinking and accepting of high-powered women.
If you are into the scene, many men in the kink/BDSM realm are well acquainted with high-power women.

I actually like them. I know they don’t look as “sleek” as the tabs, but I find tabs often come un-done inadvertently. I like the safety of having a button that will stay put and not cause any accidental mishaps!

To piggyback on this morning’s thread – for those that wax, do you find underarms more painful than bikini? Pardon the pun, but shaving my pits is the pits!
layered bob
wasn’t around for the earlier thread, but yes, I find underarms way more painful than bikini. I get my bikini line done every six weeks but have completely given up on underarms. Every time I’ve had them waxed, no matter the wax/style/etc, every follicle bleeds… so, so painful. I don’t like shaving either so I just let the hair grow and other people can just look away if they don’t like it. Maybe someday I’ll laser it…
AM
I don’t wax my bikini line, but I’ve done my underarms and it REALLY hurts. I mean I made it through, but the hair was already growing back 3 days later. Definitely not the worth the pain for such disappointing results!
I hate shaving as there are always a few hairs that don’t want to go anywhere, but until I can save up money for laser, shaving is definitely preferable to waxing!
Pep
Maybe I have a high pain threshold, but I didn’t find waxing my underarms particularly painful. Of course, I didn’t attempt to do it myself – I could see that being awkward and painful.
I don’t do it regularly, but always before a beach vacation.
SH
Eh, a little bit. But even when I wax them myself it’s still “easier” for me to wax than my bikini area (i.e. it takes less psyching myself up to rip). That said, I got laser hair removal treatments on my underarms which didn’t really take, and afterwards waxing was much, much less painful.
A
It was painful the first time, but now it doesn’t hurt at all. I have been doing it for years, probably at least 10. I use an epilator rather than wax because it’s quick and easy.
Trailing Spouse
Question for you ladies: Any other trailing spouses of physicians? The hubs is a specialist who FINALLY finished his fellowship about a year ago. I’m an attorney licensed in now 4 states. We moved to a city in the Midwest so he could join a practice. Somehow I miraculously found a job at a regional law firm as an 8th year associate. The private practice my husband is working at is having major internal problems and now we might have to move. He’s looking at a position in Chicago. Does anyone have any words of wisdom? If we move again I’ll have to waive into the Illinois bar and then try to find another job… :(
Wildkitten
Are there other practices in town he could work at? If not, Chicago is a great city, so you could definitely do worse.
Trailing Spouse
Unfortunately, he’s got a non-compete and there aren’t really any competing practices. I’m just a bit worried about finding a job in Chicago… I know it’s a huge legal market but it’ll be my 4th legal job in 9 years. :(
Anonymous
What about returning to the one the cities where you/he previously practiced?

FWIW, I don’t think 4 jobs in 9 years is a huge number…I know plenty of people who have had that many jobs without moving around. Best of luck!

I’m a 52-year-old consultant, working in a very casual industry (automotive/engineering.) I’m applying for a freelance job where they want someone under 50. What can I wear to make sure I look the part? Other workers will be wearing jeans and polos.
Brunette Elle Woods
I’m not sure if jeans would be appropriate for an interview, but it could work with a tucked in t-shirt or tank top with an open cardigan on top and 2-3 inch wide heels. I always think bold jewelry makes someone look older so I would definitely stick to minimal jewelry like stud earrings and a simple watch.
Celia
Isn’t that discriminatory? How do you handle something like that? It’s like the getting-to-know-you “do you have children” question that masks the true intent that women seem to get so much more than men.
Anonymous
For this particular job, I don’t think it’s really discriminatory – they want someone for the job who’s in the demographic target audience of the project. I don’t wear jewelry, so not an issue there, and I tend to dress “young” anyway – jeans and a tee-shirt and clogs are my go-to look. Might dress it up with boots.

Any reviews/thoughts on insulated water bottles? I’m looking at S’well and Hydro Flask, and while Hydro Flask looks more practical, with a strap and place to hook it to a hiking bag, S’well is just so darn pretty.
Anonymous
No experience with S’well but I love my Hydroflask. I love how easy it is to wash the wide-mouth–I really don’t understand bottles with a thumb-sized opening that makes it difficult to clean the entire inside surface even with a brush. Unless S’well is diamond-encrusted, I don’t think it’s worth the double price tag. Hydro Flask keeps cold (and ice won’t melt) for hours, and you can choose from a Nalgene style screw on lid, a coffee mug style flip cap, and a straw top (my favorite).

I got the S’well but made the mistake of using it for something other than water and not washing it out right away and it got gross and grew stuff and I couldn’t clean it until I ordered a special brush. So if you get it, either only use it for water, or get the cleaning brush with it.
I now prefer the plastic insulated biking water bottles — they don’t keep stuff cold as long but I can put them in the dishwasher.

Just checking in for a quick poll (may have to post again tomorrow) but those front/back earrings (specifically the small pearl in front, large pearl on the back) – appropriate for work?

late – but FWIW i’m wearing mine today. in-house counsel at a global bank. where dress code varies from suit and tie every day for our high up malefolk to kinda very business casual for some of the females. i generally am in a dress+blazer or some sort of separates.

Anybody have good personal safety tips they’d like to share, especially regarding keeping your personal info off the web? I’m dealing with an opposing party who is a real nasty piece of work (my first foray into family law, yay), and decided to do a quick Google check on my name to make sure my address was still un-findable. Nope, it’s not! It’s been a little over a year since I last removed my personal data from a bunch of websites, and now there about 4 new ones that show pretty much the exact location of my house on a map. Not cool.
