Wide leg pants in winter: how the heck do you wear them with snow and slush? This is always a tricky question — readers, I'd love to hear your hacks!

How to Wear Wide-Leg Pants in Winter

There are a few ways to do this… of course, note that if your commute does not involve being outdoors at all (e.g., home garage to office parking garage), this may not matter and you can continue to wear your wide-leg pants in winter the same way you do every other time of the year.

Wear Chunky Boots That Are Taller Than Your Hem Length

For example, if you've hemmed your wide-leg pants to wear with flats, you could wear waterproof snow boots with a platform or significant heel. That said, chunky, lug-soled boots may not be appropriate for every office — know yours.

As of 2025, some of our latest favorite chunky boots for a winter commute include these options:

Wear Tall, Loose Boots Like Uggs and Tuck Your Pants Into Them

Not elegant, but it gets the job done — this is best for days when there's been a surprise snow and you're just trying to get from point A to B without having wet hems.

Some tips for anchoring your pants into your boots: tuck them into your socks — or use a hair tie or rubberband to gather your pants.

Use Hem Tape (Or Improvise)

Hem tape is another option, of course, but this is also a last minute, emergency kind of answer — I wouldn't want to rely on hem tape regularly.

If you're fresh out of hem tape but feeling crafty, you can also try safety pins or packing tape, both of which should be available around the office.

You could also try something more permanent by sewing velcro into your pants, but there's another option as well:

Don't Wear Wide-Leg Pants in Snow and Slush

Of course, another, popular solution: you just don't wear wide-leg pants in snow and slush. I've always preferred to wear skirts and tall boots on days that I know there's going to be yucky weather on my commute. (Fleece tights for the win! Another, trendier option: “translucent” fleece tights.)

  1. walking commute here- I just don’t on sloppy slushy days. For plain cold days I wear Uggs underneath them, which provide enough height (I hem for low heels). Any of the blocky boots above could work too for keeping hems neat – I would just change at the office like I always do, since tbh I think that style was fug in the 90s and remains so!
