Pret-à-Surf® for J.Crew striped front-zip rash guardSomething on your mind? Chat about it here.

I am loving the rash guard trend — I feel like this season I’m seeing long-sleeved rash guards for women everywhere, even if you’re planning on doing more lounging than surfing. Old Navy and Lands’ End both have some super affordable versions, but this pricey red and white stripey one is oh so cool. It’s $210 at J.Crew. Pret-à-Surf® for J.Crew striped front-zip rash guard

Frugal Friday’s TPS Report: Silk Charmeuse Tank

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Silk Charmeuse TankI have mixed feelings about silk tanks for the office, to be honest. One the one hand: they’re a classic, and they do look a lot nicer under things than just a simple cotton tank. On the other side, though, they can be harder to care for than a simple cotton tank, and I think they’re often confused as a blouse in and of themselves when, in my opinion, they’re best as layering pieces (and note that Talbots labels them as such too). This 100% silk charmeuse tank from Talbots has a ton of sizes and colors (sizes 2-18 in misses, petites, woman, and woman’s petites), and it’s part of their big sale right now — the tank was $59.50 but is now marked to $31.49. Coffee Break: Patent Leather Glitter Heel Pumps

Miu Miu Patent Leather Glitter Heel PumpsI know many women who swear by the comfort of Miu Miu heels… and I kind of love the judicious use of glitter here which, yes, I think you can get away with at a conservative office (albeit probably not a day with a big meeting). Diamonds on the soles of her shoes, indeed. They’re $590 at Saks, in blush and navy patent. Miu Miu Patent Leather Glitter Heel Pumps

Pantyhose and Dresscodes

pantyhose dresscode.indexedDo any workplaces exist that still require pantyhose to be worn year-round in the summertime? Reader K wonders.

I love your site, but I need to call b.s. on something. Whenever the annual “should I wear pantyhose to the office” question comes up, invariably there are a few comments that go something like “my friend’s friend’s firm requires them even in the summer.”

I mean this is 2013, right? I have never actually met someone in real life who this is true about. I think it’s just anonymous urban legend.

Now, I am not talking about going to court in front of a judge. That’s totally possible. And I’m not talking about something that’s written into a dress code where the culture is that no one actually follows it. What I’m talking about is a bona fide, enforced pantyhose requirement in the office, year-round including in the summer.

Here’s the challenge: can you seriously name even one law or accounting or financial firm that enforces pantyhose in the office, even in the summer?

We’ve talked about when to wear pantyhose, how to wear pantyhose, and what color of pantyhose is best, but Reader K’s question is interesting:  does any dresscode actually require it?  (Pictured:  Spanx’s ‘All the Way’ Sheer Support Pantyhose has 32 mostly positive reviews on Nordstrom (where the Anniversary Sale is coming soon, FYI)…) [Read more…]

Thursday’s TPS Report: Silk Cashmere Cardigan

Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.

Silk Cashmere CardiganI love silk/cashmere cardigans pretty much year round — they hold their shape much better than cotton, they drape beautifully (particularly important in the summer when you may be wearing it around your neck during your commute — pro tip, button it up first to avoid the “cape” effect) — and they’re generally soft, lovely, and they do OK with Woolite. Brooks Brothers has a number of colors on sale as part of their Semi-Annual sale (ends July 2; lots worth checking out!) — the cardigan was $148 but is now marked to $59.20. (The matching short-sleeved shell is here.) Silk Cashmere Cardigan
