Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. This skirted blouse caught my eye a few weeks ago, and I really like it — it strikes me as a great mix of crisp and girly workwear, and I think it would look great with flares or skinny pants. (Just for kicks I might try a cropped sweater with it, too, to see how I liked it layered.) The blouse is available in XXS-XL, regular and petite sizes, for $98. Last day before my Thanksgiving long weekend starts, and I have zero motivation. Any suggestions on getting through the next 9 hours without watching cat videos or having chair races?
Anonymous
No advice. Just commiseration. If only it could be the holiday right now.
Cb
Chair races = team building and exercise, I say you go for it. I’m in the UK but normally do a small Thanksgiving celebration for a taste of home but have to work late on Thursday. Going to make (and eat) all the pie this weekend though.
Anonymous
They do Thanksgiving in the UK???
Cb
Nope (although Black Friday is creeping in) but I’m American and tend to get a group of people together for a celebration.
Wildkitten
Just watch the cat videos.
Rogue Banker
No suggestions, but I’m in the same boat – counting down the hours till a glorious stretch of six days off of work (I took Monday off too to recover from the travelling). I’m phoning it in so hard today and I don’t even care.
I’m basically the human personification of Bruno Mars’ Lazy Song right now – “Today I don’t feel like doing anything, I just wanna lay in my bed…”
If you really need to get something done today, my favorite way of doing that is actually to find a playlist of video game music on Youtube and let it run in the background of what I’m doing. It seems to work really well to help me maintain focus on something for a fair amount of time.
Sydney Bristow
I like your video game music idea! I used to listen to dubstep while studying, which actually weirdly helped me focus.
Anonymous
Because studying is far more appealing that paying attention to dubstep – with enough focus you could bock it out.

My email is a ghost town. I am mostly ahead on my work. Tomorrow I envision my normal meetings, then doing some “professional development” reading in the afternoon…

I am so with you.
I have one more full day after this and found out today that we got an extension on a massive RFP that was supposed to be due tomorrow. A major issue with one of our prime contractors has been resolved and the other RFP I have that is due tomorrow is almost done and I really only have little tasks to take care of the rest of this week (until something blows up).
August
I am in the same boat…I just don’t want to work today. In fact I want to go grocery shopping and start prepping for thanksgiving dinner..!!!
MNonymous
Same. I’m hoping to use some of that time to recycle, file and otherwise organize the giant piles of paper building up around my office.

If you have work to do, get it done so you can come back to a calm office on Monday, or whenever you return to work.

Their presentation is top notch (take note Brooks Brothers, b/c I’m sure your clothes are not only better, but more of what I should be wearing).

I feel like they think I’m lucky to shop there. They don’t have great sales, charge a lot for shipping, etc. And the lines in store are ridiculous and move so slowly, and they never apologize for the wait or do anything to fix it. Last time I was there, I realized that one of the problems is that they prepare all of the items for return as you’re standing there, which just takes forever. Meanwhile, I zipped in and out of the Banana Republic that is next door with my returns.
lsw
Their shipping charges are so high! And I feel like it’s crazy you don’t automatically get free shipping with a really pricey purchase.
Wildkitten
Is Target going to be busier tomorrow afternoon or Friday afternoon?
Betsy
I can’t recall that I’ve ever been there the day before Thanksgiving, but my experience with Friday afternoon is that it shouldn’t be that bad. Most of the Black Friday shoppers are shopped out by Friday afternoon, but they’re still really well staffed so the lines move pretty quickly.
mascot
Day before Thanksgiving will probably be busy with people getting ready to entertain. Black Friday afternoon shopping shouldn’t be bad for “doorbuster” type stores.
Meg Murry
Agreed, especially if your Target has a grocery section. Early afternoon Wednesday might not be so bad, but I wouldn’t chance it after 4 pm when people are “popping by for one last thing on the way home from work”
Do you need the item by Friday, and is it something available online? Because there is free standard shipping right now, and I might even be willing to pay for 2 day shipping not to have to drive to any stores on Friday. Or maybe order online for store pickup so you only have to stand at the service counter, not wander the store and stand in the regular checkout.
Anonymous
Target’s express shipping (right now at least) is crazy. I placed an order on Sunday and they wanted $53 *an item* to get it here by Thursday (that was the cheapest & slowest non-free shipping option). For that amount of money I’ll brave the Wednesday afternoon after work crowds to pick it up.
CountC
Another alternative is to buy online with store pick-up. You don’t have to go into the depths of the store and may be able to avoid some of the craziness. I do this when I am crunched on time and just want to go in, wait in the usually shorter line at returns/pickups, and jet.
Marise
I’ve decided to forgo any holiday shopping unless its Amazon Prime or Zappos. I know that sounds ridiculous but I’m so over braving the crowds or otherwise putting in effort for brick and mortar shopping. Plus I hate shipping charges.
Sydney Bristow
Not ridiculous. I’m doing the same. I still need to figure out what to get my parents, but I’ve bought everything else online with free shipping.
Wildkitten
I just have a shopping list for around the house – not presents. Sounds like I should wait until Friday!
All my presents are coming from Amazon.
DisenchantedinDC
I think Friday afternoon will be fine.
On the same note: went to Costco last night and it was very quiet.
Anon in SV
This is why I love Google Shopping Express. I just placed an order for about $20 of stuff from Target and it will be on my doorstep between 6 and 10pm tonight.
KateMiddletown
My Target will be a ghost town by Friday at like 3pm.

Can anyone recommend a place to get plus size workout clothes? I need some workout pants and don’t want anything like yoga pants. I used to have looser fitting jersey knit pants but that doesn’t seem to be the style these days and I haven’t found any. Even something like track pants or warmup pants would work as long as it isn’t made from that fabric that makes a lot of noise.
I tried a bunch of pants from Old Navy, but aside from the sweatpants that I sleep in and think are too warm to exercise in, everything was tight and showed every bump. I even tried my typical size as well as at least 1 size up and they were all the same.
I’m currently about a size 20-22.
Anonymous
try Champion, in my experience the quality is good for the price and they have a lot more styles that fit different body types.
Sparrow
Lands End has workout clothes. Also Macys online might have some options.
JJ
I sound like a broken record (see my rec yesterday), but Athleta carries plus-size workout pants. I wore a lot of them when I first started working out last year.
Sydney Bristow
I must have missed it yesterday. I didn’t realize they carried plus sizes. I’ll check them out.
JJ
Oh, I just meant that I recommend them for a ton of stuff – tall, plus-size, etc. Love them.

Try Zella (Nordstrom house brand). These are my favorites:

Second the Zella workout clothes nomination. My only complaint is that they don’t actually get up and do the working out for me (which seems to be what I thought would happen when I bought them.)
Cora
Zella is my favorite! Highly recommend.
Sydney Bristow
Thanks for the recs everyone! I didn’t realize Zella came in plus size. I found a pair that looked like what I had in mind and happened to be on sale so I got those. Fingers crossed they fit like what I have in mind!
If they don’t work I’ll try Athleta or Lands End. My problem with Lands End is the return shipping fee. There isn’t anywhere for me to return in person here.
Gail the Goldfish
In fact there is! You’re in Queens, right? You can return Lands End at Sears and there’s one in Rego Park. It’s by the 63rd-Rego Park stop on the M/R
Sydney Bristow
I knew you could return to Sears but I didn’t realize there was a Sears there! Thanks!
LizNYC
I like JCPenney’s workout clothes — their Xersion line specifically. You can get shirts for under $15 on sale and the leggings are my absolute favorite. Plus, it’s usually always marked down (I once got a top for $3).
Also, Macy’s is carrying a line called Ideology in plus-size and a lot of the stuff is really cute. Everything from shorts to capris to full-length leggings, plus “sports fabric” shirts.
Nike offers some plus-size items through Zappos and other retailers.
I have a couple of Old Navy athletic things too, but these are my least favorite.

My family informed me yesterday that we’re celebrating Hannukah early – this weekend. I now have 4 days to find a gift for my 9-year-old nephew. Budget is about $40. Help??

One of those circuit building kits or something Minecraft?
Meg Murry
+1 to Snap Circuits or Minecraft related swag if he’s into it (if his parents let him use a computer, tablet or game system, he’s into it if he’s 9, I’ve yet to meet a 6-10 year old boy who isn’t except for ones who’s parents ban screen time). Lego is another good choice for that age.
If you want to go educational but fun, (like Snap Circuits, etc) check out Mindware.com , and look at the 9 year old category. Much of the stuff available there is also available on Amazon Prime, if you need it by this weekend. My kids have quite a few items on there, and as long as you watch for parent preferences (not too many little pieces or not too noisy, etc) it’s a great resource.
A card or board game would also be a good choice (although less than $40) if you are willing to play it with him that night.
If he has a tablet or game system, a gift card to the Apple Store/Google Play/Amazon/Playstation Online/XBox Online could be good, or a good supplement to a cheaper gift ($20 gift + $20 gift card, for instance), although I’d get parental approval for that one first.
Anonymous
I am not trying to call anyone out specifically but I wonder if people would have been so quick to suggest a circuit building kit for a nine year old girl. And if not, that makes me really sad :/

I bought one for my 7 year old niece. I believe Mighty Girl also lists the circuit builder on their gift guide.

Yay! For other OP’s out there, a 9 year old nephew probabley should already have an IPOD (if not an iphone), so the easiest thing to get for $40 would be an APPLE gift card, so that they can get music, or go into the store and get accesorie’s like earphone’s. With Rosa’s 3 did’s, I have just given up and just have dad write them each check’s for $133 (my budgett is $400 for the kid’s). This way, I just let Dad do all the work and I get all the credit for the gift’s! YAY!

I do NOT know how he count’s b/c I thinking he is NOt counting my travel time to ST LOUIS and back, for which I am suposed to get PORTAL TO PORTAL treatement. if he reecount’s I sould be abel to leave now for the MOONTH. It was NOT my fault that we defaulted so we should be abel to bill th e cleint for the extra 23 hours of travel and food for me at the HOTEL. I hope so, otherwise I have to stay late tomorrow to get the 100 hours. FOOEY!

You would probably be a heroine if you do go in house with your work ethic as many women head in house as part of a pre planned early retirement where they can send all the heavy lifting to outside (I.e., “competent”) counsel. Good luck to you if you can land one of these ultra-cushy positions!!

Boys of all ages in my area are swept up in the Kendama toy craze. A Japanese toy – handle with various cups and a point from which a ball on a string dangles – trick is to get the ball on the point or in the cup. When I say craze I totally mean it. They play it everywhere – car, on the soccer bench, living room. Mom might or might not thank you due to the clicking sound the ball makes when caught, but as a mom I have to say it’s nice to see an actual toy as opposed to more screen stuff. Comes in tons of colours. Videos online show them how to get started and it is amazing how much time they will spend on it.
Otherwise – Lego. Nerf. Captain Underpants Books.
Meg Murry
Not the OP, but thanks for this! My son is 8 and I think he would really like something like this. Although I might wait a few years, because I can see him whacking his brother in the head with the ball on a string accidentally or walls or windows. But I think I’ll put it on my list of something to consider for this spring, when he can play with outside.

Curious if anyone on here would be interested in forming a Whole Life Challenge Team. It’s an 8-week lifestyle game starting January 16 in which players earn points for things like eating well, exercising, taking a multivitamin, etc. There are different levels of strictness, with the most strict being basically a paleo diet. It also has vegetarian options.
None of my friends would be interested in this sort of thing, but I know a lot of us are interested in these kind of lifestyle choices.
Related, has anybody done the WLC before?
mascot
I did one at my office a few years back. We did the least restrictive version of the diet, but were highly competitive. We ran through our “free” points but otherwise had perfect scores. Some of it was good (incorporating exercise, mindfulness) and some was just irritating (arbitrary diet rules that weren’t based on anything other than the authors’ ideas- it’s just different enough from Paleo to trip you up sometimes) and it was expensive for what you got. You can find the rules online and set up your own game with friends and keep all the money in your own pockets. We did all get a little more lean.

Any experience with Soia and Kyo coats? I bought a beautiful wool coat on sale but I’m contemplating returning it since it’s almost parka season…
Chicago Gal
I have Soia & Kyo coat I bought about 8 years ago that I still absolutely love. It’s gorgeous – knee-length with an off-center zipper, a big flipped-down funnel collar with a button, belted, and made of black, ribbed-texture wool. It’s very, very heavy fabric, and I feel instantly put-together when I wear it. It’s not really warm enough for the truly cold days in Chicago – for those I just abandon all hope of looking cool and wear one of my long Patagonia puffer coats (knee or below-knee, depending on just how cold it is) However, I do wear the S&K coat in the depths of winter for date nights, if I need to be at a conference or meeting, or just because I want to look especially sleek that day.
It seemed like a splurge when I bought it, but it’s turned out to be a great purchase. It has held up amazingly well, and still looks new.
Want one...
I’ve been wanting one really badly…you probably got the same email I got this morning which is why you are asking :) I”m also tempting to pick one up in this sale but I don’t like that they are FINAL SALE. Why if I order the wrong size? Tempting but may pass for another sale…I am obsessed with one at a local department store.
(Former) Clueless Summer
I have a ten year old one that’s bit the dust now (due to stains drycleaning just can’t get out of ivory wool, not the construction itself) that I used to wear all winter in Montreal (even the coldest days). I think its a coat you could wear 80% of the time in the winter at least – the wool is very heavy and dense, so it really blocks the cold.
espresso bean
My warmest winter coat is a down parka from Soia and Kyo. I’m obsessed with it and recommend the brand to everyone. I got it on sale at Nordstrom Rack last year, and it has been SO worth it for Chicago winters. The style is sleek (well, as sleek as a down parka can be), and it keeps me warmer than any of my other coats. And I get lots of compliments. I say keep it!
SSJD
I had a coworker with a beautiful Soia and Kyo coat. I became obsessed with it! It did seem very stylish and seemed to wear well. I’ve ordered several from Nordstrom but always ended up returning them. In my experience they do run quite small, so be careful when ordering.
waffles
I have two Soia and Kyo coats – one is a mid-weight wool and the other is a puffer style. I love them both so much! Very stylish and good quality for the price. The midweight one has held up really, really well for the 10+ years I’ve had it – worn pretty much every day for each winter. It’s warm enough to keep me cozy down to about -15C or -20C. I bought the puffer style one a couple years ago (polar vortex) and it keeps me toasty down to -35C… or as toasty as possible.
My only complaint is that the hood on the puffer coat isn’t deep and won’t stay on without help. It’s not a dealbreaker though.
I would also say they run a bit small. My coats are both medium – for reference, I’m a size S or 4 on top and a size 10-12 on bottom.
Raise negotiation?
Have any of you negotiated your raise? I’m at a small firm, and much to my surprise, I was just forewarned that my first raise would be relatively low because I’m getting new benefits starting at my one year anniversary. This was never told to me previously. I took a substantial cut to make this move with the understanding I would have the opportunity to “catch back up.” I’ve negotiated when I’ve accepted a job but never during the raise process. I’ve demonstrated that I’m a strong asset, and I can give concrete examples of my contributions.
Maddie Ross
It’s definitely possible to negotiate your raise and you should (esp at a small firm without lockstep issues), but I would be cognizant of the fact that the increase in benefits – whether an actual increase in the amount of benefits to you, or an increase in the cost to the firm of the benefits you are getting – is likely viewed by your employer as additional compensation to you.
KinCA
I’ve done this before when I didn’t feel my raise was in line with a glowing year-end performance review (not in law but at a small to mid-size company) and was successful. If your company is doing well, your team is doing well, and you’re at the higher end of the performance scale, it’s worth trying.

I’m looking to go in-house an the initial numbers I’m getting are depressingly lower — like 1/2 of what I’m currently making in salary with a 25% bonus opportunity on that amount. If you’re finding that the benefits, retirement package, etc. changes that balance, I’d love to hear it…

I really hate when people use the phrase “must be nice” when talking about someone’s hours, or how easy their job seems, or the fact that they get to take vacation. I’m sure it’s sometimes used earnestly, but I’d say 90% of the time it’s a passive-aggressive, sarcastic jab at someone’s supposed work ethic and I’m sick of it. Focus on yourself, and if you really feel someone’s laziness is impacting you, bring it up with a superior. Otherwise, mind your own business.
Oh, and it’s annoying outside of work too. “Must be nice to get to play video games all weekend, I have to run all these errands and clean.” “Must be nice to get to eat whatever you want.” “Must be nice having a boyfriend who can do that for you.”
If you ever the urge to say “hmmm, must be niiiiiiice . . .” don’t. Seriously, don’t.
First Year Anon
Most of the time it’s people complaining about a situation they willingly took on themselves. “Must be nice to have all this free time” when people talk about their normal and expected family obligations. You CHOSE to create this life- I think everyone is allowed to complain about things they chose every once in awhile (no one’s perfect!!), but to constantly put it on me as if I am the ‘lucky’ or undeserving one isn’t cool.
My favorite one I have heard- “Must be nice to be able to run so fast”. Yes it is. It also took a lot of training and hard work to get to this point.
Wildkitten
People are saying that to be purposely obnoxious because they think whatever the other person said was even more obnoxious.
Wildkitten
I agree it’s not a nice thing to say, but I don’t think anyone is saying it to be nice, so I don’t think pointing out that it isn’t nice is going to stop anyone from saying it.
CountC
Agreed. No one is saying it to be nice!! People are saying to be jerky and to match obnoxiousness with what they see as obnoxiousness.
Anonymous
are you sure it’s always in response to obnoxiousness? I’ve definitely heard it unprovoked before, like people commenting on how it “must be nice” to leave the office early, even if that person’s been in the office since 7:30 that morning or had a doctors appointment or something. Or worse, saying “must be nice” when someone takes approved time off for a vacation. Or saying “must be nice” when they should say what they want, like “could you please pause that game and help me with the dishes?”
I get that if someone is being a jerk it can be justified, like when my mom says to my sister “gee, it must be nice to be perfect” or “it must be nice to know everything” when she’s being a jerk.
Wildkitten
Yes.
CountC
+1 to WK.
The perception of the MBN person is that whatever the other person is talking about is obnoxious, whether such person thinks it is or not.
CountC
To add to this, if I really thought whatever the person was doing/saying was actually nice, never in a million years would I use the expression, “must be nice.” I would say, “That sounds really fun,” or, “I hope you enjoy your vacation.”
A from Boston
Okay, okay, if you honestly feel that “must be nice” is always warranted, if someone leaving work early or taking a vacation they don’t deserve when they’re needed in the office, why can’t people use their actual words and tell this person what’s wrong. What happened to “why are you leaving so early when we have a lot to get through?” or “why are you taking a vacation next week when you know we’re in the middle of a big project?” Why is it okay to be passive aggressive? Do you think some people are so bad that they can’t be reasoned with, and deserve nastiness instead of a mature conversation?
CountC
Where did I say I thought it was always warranted?! You asked if we were sure it was always said in response to obnoxiousness and I said yes. I didn’t say you had to agree that what prompted the MBN was obnoxious, I was just answering your question.
I am not justifying the use of this phrase, it’s rude. I don’t disagree on that point. However, I have a hard time imaging a scenario where I would say either of the phrases you mentioned to coworker, even if I were a person who would say “must be nice.” It is not at all my place to say either of those things to a colleague unless I am a manager, and if I am that person’s manager, those things should have been said when the leave was originally requested, not on the day the approved leave is being taken.
A from Boston
So wait, do you mean it’s response to *percieved* obnoxiousness, or behavior that everyone agrees is obnoxious? Because last I checked, leaving at 5 after a 9 hour day is only obnoxious if you’re leaving someone else with extra work to do (or if you stand up and say “I’m leaving early, wheeeeee! have fun working late, suckers!”), and taking an approved vacation is rarely considered obnoxious. To me, people don’t say “must be nice” when someone’s being rude, they say it when someone’s taking time off they don’t deserve, or don’t seem to be working hard enough. Even if they are getting their work done, and them leaving on the early side doesn’t actually impact anyone.
I guess to me, the word obnoxious evokes someone being loud, disruptive, and noticeably disrespectful, not just someone who has a smaller workload or different work schedule.
My manager is okay with me leaving at 4:30 most days, since I get in early and don’t have any late meetings. If my colleague is upset that her own job duties (separate from mine, so I’m not leaving her to pick up the slack) have her working later than she’d like, I hardly see why my leaving before she gets to is obnoxious.
Wildkitten
The obnoxiousness is perceived by the person who says MBN. But at this point you’re being obnoxious to CountC who is explaining something to you, quite nicely.

Due to various circumstances, we are without any plans for Thanksgiving. Several restaurants are open and we were thinking of going out to eat. It’s just the two of us and I don’t feel like cooking a big meal. It’s the first time since we’ve been married (15 years) that we’re not spending the day with family, so I’m a little sad. We’re both off work the whole week so the thought of getting dressed and going out sounds kind of nice. Anyone else without concrete plans for the holiday?
emeralds
I have all the plans (hosting small-scale Friendsgiving tonight, Thanksgiving day-of with my dad, Thanksgiving: The Return with my boyfriend’s family a few states away over the weekend), so your non-plans sound pretty great and so so relaxing!
Wildkitten
A few days ago someone posted about not having plans and all the suggestions they got sounded amazing. Specifically – roast a chicken (or buy one and eat it), day drink wine, and watch Asiz Ansari’s new show on netflix.
Diana Barry
I would go to the movies ALL DAY and take a walk in between and then go out to a really nice dinner. AND take a nap! :)
Senior Attorney
That’s pretty much what Gentleman Friend and I have planned for Christmas, except substitute a bike ride for the walk!
A from Boston
Please tip well if you eat out on Thanksgiving. It’s possible the waitress chose that shift, but it’s also possible she had to work that day due to lack of volunteers and not getting priority for that day off, or having to choose between having Thanksgiving or Christmas off. I know that’s not really your problem, but in the interest of “holiday spirit” and whatnot, a few extra bucks on the tip is a nice gesture.
Yep
As someone who waited tables every thanksgiving and christmas for like 6 years straight, I appreciate this comment. Family was always so mad but those were “all hands on deck” shifts.
Susie
Some people may be glad to have an excuse ;) I’m not a holiday person in general (I like birthdays but that’s about it) so I was always happy to volunteer to pick up any holiday shift.
A from Boston
yes, and I did mention that some people choose to work during the holidays for various reasons, but you shouldn’t assume the person serving you wants to be there. Even if you know they chose that shift, be extra nice anyway, you never know what rude customers they’ve been dealing with.
honestly, this should hold true year round, but it’s especially important during the holidays.
Sparrow
Definitely! Thanks for the reminder.I’m actually a bit hesitant to go out on Thanksgiving because I feel bad for people who have to work. We’re considering just ordering food and staying in.
Care
Not saying you don’t realize this, but people still have to work to cook the food and deliver it. Unfortunately, there isn’t a way to shut down the whole world on holidays. Grocery stores stay open for last minute cooking needs, restaurants for those who don’t want to cook, movie theaters for those without plans. If there is a possible need on a holiday, business are going to try to meet it. It is sad for those who are stuck working those shifts, but it would take a massive societal expectations change (and thus no profitability for the businesses) for anything to change.
Runner 5
If you think there isn’t a way to shut the whole world down, try visiting Germany on a Sunday or most of the UK (I don’t know if Scottish laws are different) on Christmas Day. We don’t even have public transport on Christmas Day here.
Care
Ok, to shut the US down. Trying to get the US to act like Europe (which would be so wonderful for so many categories) would require a major societal expectations change. People here expect to have everything available to them all the time. Plus many businesses value profits over people and don’t want to miss out on key spending times (which is best exemplified by how Black Friday is starting to take over Thanksgiving).
Senior Attorney
Back in the day things really did shut down on holidays. I remember running out of butter one Thanksgiving and just being out of luck.
A from Boston
Go out or order in, there really isn’t much difference and it’s honestly okay to do so as long as you’re polite to those who serve you and you tip well. Those people probably aren’t happy about working that day, but the people who really ruin their Thanksgiving are the entitled jerks who treat them like worthless servants.
CHJ
We’re doing exactly this, but I’m excited about it! We’re going to a nice restaurant that has a reputation of doing a fantastic Thanksgiving dinner every year, and a lot of families have an annual tradition of going there for Thanksgiving. We’re going to spend the day doing a Turkey Trot, then going hiking, then a mid-afternoon dinner, and then wine, pie, and Netflix all evening. I am honestly so excited for the break from holiday travel and holiday stress. So it doesn’t have to be sad – own it and turn it into a fun day!
Gail the Goldfish
My family has lunch plans, but always forgets to plan for dinner, and everything is closed by the time we realize we’re hungry again (we don’t have leftovers because we go out for thanksgiving lunch). I think the plan this year is to hit up Waffle House for dinner.

BaI know I may be in too late for this, but I’m looking for someone good to do alterations in the Bay Area. Ideally San Francisco, though I’d go do the East Bay or Peninsula for someone really good. I’d really like someone who, in addition to doing good work with the alterations themselves, can give me good advice on what will look best (in terms of how far to take something in or up, etc).
profmama
I love Eli at Uni Tailor on University in Berkeley. She’s altered everything from wedding dresses to blazers to pants and shirts for my friends and me. Reasonable prices, great friendly demeanor. She can give advice about how much to take something in/ up.
Also, if you shop at Nordstrom, the Nordstrom tailors are excellent. I always need dresses taken in at the top, and they haven’t failed me yet.

If you shop at Nordstrom, their alterations woman in the SF shopping center on Market is amazing. I have not found someone equally good for my non-Nordstrom purchases, so I will follow this with interest

Yes, she is Cheryl Sandberg’s tailor. Yes, Jacquie is opinionated and awesome. I once brought three suits I had bought to her for tailoring and she literally made me take one back because the color was unflattering. She was like, “Girl, no amount of tailoring is going to make you feel like one million dollars in this!”
She is awesome, not terribly fast unless you really need stuff, and pricy, but you will come out looking and feeling amazing. The closest thing you can have to a made-to-measure tailor for women in the Bay Area. I LOVE HER.
Lorelai Gilmore
Louise Austrie in Oakland. She has done beautiful work on suits for me. Her core business is bridal, but she’s altered at least six jackets for me and truly transformed them. I’m plus sized and about three different sizes to boot and she is wonderful about making the clothes really work for me. She’s just the best.
job loss
a pretty close friend of mine was just fired from her job. I heard it from another close friend that she told (other friend happened to call her and she was upset and asked why). fired friend hasn’t told me yet, but I wonder should I reach out to say something to her, or wait until she tells me? she is very sensitive and probably taking this hard but I would like to be supportive. I also don’t want her to think people are gossiping behind her back. what would you do? she lives in another town so I can’t invite her to hang out and hope she tells me, and if I call and try to hint around, i think she will know that I know.
I am also open to hearing your thoughts on what advice I could give her about addressing this termination while job hunting. she was told it was her performance, but she thinks she was doing a good job and her employer gave her a few weeks pay (in our jurisdiction she would not be entitled to any pay if being terminated “for cause”, so he may have felt that he did not have good legal justification for terminating her). her employer is a bit of a weird man and I am thinking the reason could have been anything she did that he didn’t like and he simply didn’t want her to be around anymore. how would you address this termination on your cover letters / new job interviews?
Anonymous
Wait until she tells you until you say anything.

And I wouldn’t give her any advice about addressing it in job interviews unless she explicitly asks you for advice. This post kind of has a condescending tone. It’s not your place to advise her on her career unless she seeks you out for help.
job loss
sorry, I should have specified. she is about 10 years younger than me (in her early 20s). our families are close, she is more like a little sister than a friend (she has no siblings of her own). she regularly comes to me for job advice so I expect the same thing now once (if) she feels like telling me. I am a lawyer so that might be why she likes to ask me. I am not trying to be condescending, and obviously not going to offer unsolicited advice, just trying to be ready to help her if she wants it.
Killer Kitten Heels
For the cover letter/interviews part of your question, I’d direct her to the archives at Ask A Manager – the advice there is spot-on, and there are tons of columns about the exact kind of issue you’re describing. Also, sending her to a neutral resource – as opposed to reciting a list of “do this, don’t do that” if/when she asks for help would cut down on the “I’m a successful adult here to lecture you” vibe – it sounds like you’re already sensitive to the issue and have the type of relationship where you could offer her advice without being automatically lecture-y, but I still find it helpful to be able to point to outside resources when I’m approached for advice by a friend or family member.
Mpls
And only give job advice if she asks for it. You can make the offer (probably just once) “Let me know if you want any help strategizing the job search” and then let it be. Maybe refer her to the Ask A Manager webs!te (once).

funeral wear
My grandmother passed and her service will be this weekend. I live about five hours away and will be heading in on Saturday. I am sure I am overthinking this but I feel like I have nothing to wear. I don’t have a plain black dress. It seems weird to wear pants. It also seems weird to wear a black skirt with a black top since they wouldn’t be the same black. The last time I went to a funeral it was in Memphis (I live in PA) and I was surprised that most people were not wearing all black…but I feel like most funerals I’ve gone to up here, people wear black. Is it crazy to wear a black skirt and some sort of patterned top? I could probably buy something, too…I work close to J Crew, Banana Republic, Anthropologie, Target, Talbot’s…should I just pick up a black sheath or something? I am also newly pregnant and I feel like my brain is just broken when I am trying to think about this.
Wildkitten
So sorry for your loss. You can wear mis-matching blacks or you can wear black pants. Or you can wear a black skirt with a patterned top as long as the pattern either has black in it or is muted. There’s a lot of forgiveness for what you wear a funerals unless you are like, Jackie O. And since you are pregnant you get even more of a pass.
But seriously if you are famous and will be in the forever-preserved photos of the event that will be published in newspapers, get a new outfit. Otherwise you are fine with what you have.
Anonymous
It’s not weird to wear pants. It’s also not weird if your top and skirt don’t match perfectly.
funeral wear
Ahh thank you. I think I will just pair either a muted black/white pattern (I have a top the fits the bill) or a black silk top with the skirt or pants and go from there.

That sounds just fine. So sorry for your loss. Sending hugs to you from an internet stranger!
Wildkitten
Oh yeah – if your blacks don’t match because one of them is silk that is totally fine.

Wear black, don’t wear black, wear pants, whatever. No one will remember your outfit unless you show up in a glitter bikini like Elle Woods.
Anon
I’m sorry for your loss. I think this is probably regional and cultural, but in my city (in the southwest), a black skirt and patterned shirt would be fine. So would pants. However, if you feel more comfortable in a black dress, then you should get one. Maybe you can find a nice wrap dress that will work for the rest (or at least a good portion) of your pregnancy as well.
Diana Barry
I had the BR wrap dress and it fit through 20 weeks or so.
Rogue Banker
First off, my condolences for your loss.
Second, for my aunt’s funeral last year (Boston area) I had a black sweater and black/dark blue checked skirt, with black tights and heels. I think as long as black is the great majority of the outfit, and nothing is any kind of over-the-top, it’ll work.

Has anyone wrapped school loans into a home refi?
Our situation:
Have plenty of equity to do it. We are looking to refinance into a 15 year fixed mortgage at 3ish%. School loan is has about 15 years left but is at 6.8%. My rough calculation is that this would save about 200 per month in interest and the payment would be about the same. Not in IBR or eligible for any kind of loan forgiveness. The only drawback I can see is if I die, the amount loan doesn’t go away (but I have PLENTY of life insurance to cover) and there won’t be the hardship deferral option.
Is there any other big thing I am not considering?
Anonymous
Wouldn’t this increase your risk on the mortgage? If you somehow fall into hard times, you now must pay more every month or face foreclosure. Whereas keeping it in student loans means if you default those you won’t lose your house.
I’d consider it if doing so allows you to significantly shorten the pay off time frame but not if you’re still going to take 15 years to pay it off.
Why do you still have 15 years left anyway? You should be on a ten year plan for sure if you’re doing well enough to afford a house. That will save you much more money.
Wildkitten
In some places it’s cheaper to buy a house than to rent, and you can buy a house for a lot less than it costs to get a graduate degree. So I don’t think one has to be on a 10 year loan repayment plan in order to buy a house, depending on the circumstances.
Anonymous
Ahhh yes, you’re right. Sorry for being NYC centric.
But I still don’t this refi is wise.
EZ
I do think Anon raises a good point with respect to OP’s substantial equity. If they’ve built that equity by putting a lot of money into the house, it does raise the question of why they went that route instead of putting more money toward their loans given that their loan rates are so high relative to their mortgage. If the equity came through appreciation, I think it’s a really risky move to borrow out of that.
Edna Mazur
I was unemployed and single when I consolidated so I took them out at a longer horizon. I now am married and doing better financially. In my area buying made sense. Our mortgage on our <1200 square foot home is about what we were paying for a one bedroom apartment (give or take $150 or so).
The Hub's financial priority has been the mortgage rather than my loans and since we were paying down debt I was OK with that. With the lower interest rate, even with wrapping the school loans in, I think it only increases the mortgage payment by $100 or so.
I've looked into refinancing school loans into a shorter time period via Sofi and due to the low amount of the loans (<$30,000) the rates weren't all that better.
Am I missing another option?
Ems
That’s really odd? I refinanced with SoFi but thanks to some good interest rates I only had $30k to refinance from the 6.5% and it was still worth it to do.
Edna Mazur
I’ll have to look into it again.
EZ
Edna, it’s possible you are not getting great rates from Sofi if the mortgage refi is already showing on your credit report as a hard inquiry, but you might be able to get a better rate a few months removed from the refinance.
Also, their fixed rates are not much to write home about–to get the benefit of a refi, you really need to go variable. For a variety of reasons that have been discussed in the comments here in the past, this is still a good deal even though it feels scarier.
EZ
I also had not heard of higher rates for smaller amounts refi-d. But I did mine two years ago so maybe that’s changed.
Edma Mazur
Ah, I had been looking at fixed rates. Variable drops me down quite a bit. Variable rates scare me…
Anonymous
I would refinance the student loans separately for the reasons Anon above gives. You can get rates below 2% right now for a private refi, and would have the flexibility of keeping it separate from your mortgage if something happened.
DCR
I would not. It just seems too risky; if necessary, you can skip student loan payments, but if you combine them that would put your house at risk.
If the goal is just to lower the interest rate, consider refinancing the student loans with one of the student loan refinance companies.
Diana Barry
How much is the mortgage outstanding and by how much would you be increasing it? What is the new LTV ratio? And what’s your interest rate on your current mortgage? I would run those numbers too. It might make sense to refi the student loans separately, but if you are refi-ing the mortgage anyway it sounds like it would be easier to roll it all in together.
Edna Mazur
Have 45% equity. If school loans are wrapped in it drops to 28ish%.
Wildkitten
I’d do the student loans through SOFI if you can.
Maddie Ross
I’ve not done it, but I honestly might given those percentages and the comment from CHJ below about deductibility (we have never ever been able to deduct a dime of our student loan interest – I always wonder who actually can). Would the payment on the 15 year re-fi be close to the same as you’re paying now on the mortgage + student loans? I would definitely do it then. And yes, deferments are much easier on student loans than mortgages, but I would venture to say that getting one on a mortgage now is not impossible at all.
Wildkitten
You can deduct if you make under $80,000 – so that’s most people – especially if you only have an undergraduate degree. You can only deduct up to $2500 though. It should definitely be that people of all incomes can deduct as much interest as they pay. It’s total bull that it’s different than mortgage interest.
Edma Mazur
I can deduct. I live in a low COL area. Total indebtedness is under $100,000 and my AGI is around $80,000.
Wildkitten
I make under $80k and pay $5700 in student loan interest every year but can only deduct $2500.
Mpls
WK – It used to be that you could deduct all personal interest (way back in the day), which was then reduced to only being able to deduct mortgage interest, since it was costing the government a lot in revenue. I think the lost tax revenue from the home mortgage deduction is one of the biggest areas of forgone tax revenue (from individual taxpayers vs corporate), if I remember my tax policy seminar correctly. So I imagine the limit on student loan deductions is a compromise on those two positions, since the overall trend was moving away from allowing any deduction of interest at all.
Not that it helps anyone paying student loans feel much better.
CHJ
One benefit is that if your income is too high to deduct your student loan interest, you may still be able to deduct the mortgage interest. Depending on the magnitude of the loans and your tax bracket, that could be another area of savings.
Edna Mazur
Thanks all, I’ll keep reading comments.
Best option might be to refinance the mortgage down leaving the school loan out (payment would stay the same) and start throwing the extra principle payments we’ve been making on the mortgage against the school loan. That would probably stick better with my terribly risk averse hubby as well and both loans would still get knocked out quicker than otherwise.
Anonymous
To me it is absurd that you are paying lots of extra on the loan with the lowest interest rate. That makes zero financial sense. That’s not risk adverse from your husband at all, unless he’s considering only his risk and not the joint costs to you as a couple.
I really think you need to talk about this. It’s just a dumb plan to build up tons of equity at the cost of 6.8% interest.
Edma Mazur
Good points.
Doodles
I looked into this option but ultimately refinanced the home separately and then took out a home equity line to pay off the student loans. The home equity loan was at a rate much lower than my student loans (which were at almost 8%). I got a line with a 50K limit and used that to pay off my outstanding students loans. Then I paid off the home equity loan within a year. This may be another option for you to consider if you have equity in your home.
styling a Boden dress
Any suggestions for styling the Betty Ottoman Dress from Boden? I have it in the lavender color. The material is a bit thick so I feel like I should be able to wear it in the winter time, but it’s got an odd neckline for a jacket. I thought about wear a loose white blazer with it, but is that too spring-like? Does anyone else have this dress, and do you wear anything over it?

I have this issue too — I only wear mine with long boyfriend- or waterfall-style cardigans.

I have this dress! I wear it with a collarless blazer or a moto loose jacket (knit, so less dressy) since the collar is so odd.
I also have the uniqlo heattech scoop undershirts and I wear one under the dress (usually in black) to keep me warm in the winter.

For those of you that lateraled from one biglaw firm to another, how long did your conflicts check take? I am wondering if I should be reaching out to the recruiting department if I have not heard back after a month of submitting my conflicts forms. (This is for corporate, not litigation.)

Definitely call. This happened to my friend (and he was very junior) and the new firm was having issues getting information they needed from his current firm. When he called to check in, he was able to facilitate getting the new firm the information they needed and clear everything up.
Biglaw Associate
Interesting. Did the new firm contact the old firm before your friend gave notice? I would hope not! :/

I have friends whose took about that time or longer, and others who only took about a week. I think it varies quite a bit by firm so your wait might not be abnormal for your new firm, but doesn’t hurt to follow up and see what their timeline is.

Mine was fast tracked and it still took 10+ days.

My old firm was notorious for taking forever at hiring and I think my conflicts check took less than a week. I’d definitely call. Do you have an offer pending conflict check or did they ask you to submit the conflicts stuff before making you an offer? I wouldn’t worry too much; I’d think if there was a problem they’d let you know ASAP. But I would follow up.
Biglaw Associate
This is my thinking too. I got a conditional offer (pending conflicts check).

Is the word “nanny” verboten in NYC/Westchester? I use it (and our nanny refers to herself as a “nanny”) but I’ve increasingly noticed that most prefer to say “babysitter” – a term which I find highly inaccurate for what our nanny does, which frankly is to essentially raise our child most of the time (very lovingly and well, I have no complaints and only somewhat soul-crushing guilt about it). I am starting to wonder if by using the term, I’ll be perceived as disrespectful/tone-deaf – particularly in the context of my office, where I care what people think, I wonder if I should start using the word babysitter (despite the fact that I personally feel like I would be offended if I were a full-time nanny and someone called me a babysitter). Or use some other term like “childcare provider” – which sounds a bit stilted and like I’m deliberately trying to avoid being more specific. Thoughts on this clearly already overthought-by-me question?

Nanny is completely appropriate. Totally agree that is is respectful for the role this person plays.
But are you certain there is not a class/financial divide you are missing? Most people cannot afford nannies, so if you are talking to people at your office who cannot afford full time help just be sensitive about dropping the “Nanny” bomb when you talk casually. It will make you sound a bit…. you know what….
