I tried this on in my Target and it was one of two I was considering (I ended up getting the [weekend-only] Thankoon color blocked dress http://www.target.com/Thakoon-Target-Colorblock-Shift-Dress/dp/B004IZXJJ2).
I thought about this dress for work and it is definitely work appropriate, in terms of length, chest coverage; however, I ultimately decided to pass because I thought it looked very cheap (I know, I know, it *is* cheap, but it doesn’t have to *look* cheap). The lace up top was cut with very raw edges and did not look polished/finished. It also comes with a belt, which looked very cheap. Certainly, the belt could be swapped for a more high-quality looking belt, but I just didn’t feel like it looked nice enough for work, if that makes sense.

I looked at this dress in the store and I couldn’t agree more.
Anonymous Poser
I’m not trying to sound snotty, but I looked at it online and was thinking the *same* thing: Doesn’t this look too cheap to be business-appropriate?
Sigh. I was in Target yesterday, based on on observation from someone–I think it was a Corporette–that their shift dresses were on sale. I wasn’t looking for a black shift dress, but there was one with an interesting neckline (one that wasn’t so high that it would make my chest look like bag-o’-boobs) and shoulders, and when I tried it on, it fit perfectly.
Except. Except for the neckline detailing that was unfortunately located and so lengthy that it pointed (literally) directly at where my “headlights” would be if I didn’t use bra inserts to cover them up. I make sure no outline shows, even when I’m chilly, so now we have to point to where they are? Why are clothes designed this way? Ruined an otherwise great dress. /grumble

I agree this would be a little to informal for my office. Plus the neckline is too plunging. It is too much to watch the partners looking at my cleavage. Ugh!

I REALLY like the one you chose. That looks like the perfect go-to dress for summer. And I live in those styles when I’m on vacation, since they’re easy to dress up or down with accessories. I may just have to swing by my Target and give it a try. Love it.
Annie
I got the Thakoon dress too!

I just bought the Thakoon dress based on your recommendation! Love it!
Eponine
Yeah, I have some $30 dresses from Target that look just lovely and don’t like cheap at all – not sure what the deal is with this one.

Great deals! I’m grabbing these. Thanks for the links.

Wow! Thanks for the links. Grabbed one of both.

I love the cut of the dress and think it would look great on my body, but I can’t get on board with the detail at the neckline. It looks like it slapped on as a cheap after thought. It’s too bad it was added, otherwise this dress would be mine!
AnonInfinity
I agree. It’s a shame because it’s such a cute dress, otherwise.
HH
I agree Emily…. if you go to the site and zoom in…the crochet detail has rough edges…. it does look like an afterthought. I even wonder if I could cut it off… thus my desicion not to buy.
Justine
Is this juniors dress? Otherwise – what is up with the odd sizes (3, 5, etc…)? If it is a juniors dress then it will not be cut to fit most womens bodies… at least that is my two cents on the matter.
AJP
Yes – all of the dresses in this collection are juniors, and this was a big problem for me because I am 5’8″ and curvy (and not 16 years old). I tried on a ton of these dresses last weekend – most were laughable on me; a few were close but didn’t work because the waist was too high and the length was too short. That was the case with this dress – and one of the pockets stuck out oddly. The quality was not great, but if it fit someone perfectly it could work with the right accessories. Very disappointing because I went a little crazy when Target had the Liberty of London promotion last year. Now I understand why those dresses fit me even though previous Go Int’l did not – because the Liberty dresses are misses sizes.

Does this remind anyone of Justice Ginsburg’s court attire?

Kat I’m still getting the 403 error on my work computer that showed up after I commented yesterday. Any news on the problem? Reading on my phone is hard :-(
lawyerette
Totally agree. Super annoying to have to read site on phone :(
Kat
So sorry about the problems — it’s hard to troubleshoot because neither I nor my tech guys can reproduce the problem (and I have 4 different computers at my disposal!. After we’ve gotten enough screenshots from readers and gotten feedback from the Corporette Facebook page, we’ve narrowed down that the 403 error seems to be coming only on some people, after they’ve commented, which suggests it wasn’t related to the cache settings that I thought it was. Ultimately we have to wait until the weekend to try some fixes — I have made far too many “easy” fixes on the backend that have resulted in the site going kaplooey to risk it during the workweek (our highest traffic time).
ATC
Perhaps there’s been some update to corporate virus protection software or something similar because I just started getting the 403 error for some other sites that I didn’t get before this week (like 6pm.com) – and I don’t think my IT dept. has specifically targetted me for my online shopping habit! :)
Anonymous
Ha! I have spent all week thinking someone in IT decided I was spending too much time shopping at work. It did not help that the firm’s manager was paged right when I got the message the first time.

Same here, continuing since yesterday. I can get in at home and by iPhone, but 403 error wall when I try from my office PC.

I’m getting the 403 error at home on my Macbook (through Google Chrome and Safari) and have been since the weekend. Clearing caches, history, cookies, etc. hasn’t helped.

Definitely don’t like the little lace doily thing on the neck!

Any other WordPerfect users out there? I’ve heard that my employer is dropping it soon because it won’t be supported, and I have to learn Word. I’ve used WordPerfect for 20 years, and am not looking forward to learning the quirks of another word processing program now. I’d love some tips from any other die-hard WP users who have made the switch to Word.
AIMS
I have to use WP for work. I have adjusted. I can’t say I love it, and it certainly causes problems when I have to send myself something from home/view something from someone else sent in reg MSW format (solution: save docs in .rtf format — will be compatible with everything!)
Most issues you can get around. Also, you can basically set it to look and act mostly like MSWord (ask IT). The minor quirks such as where certain commands are placed, etc., you will find frustrating but get over when you figure it out. It definitely is worse than MS Word, but it’s not unmanageable.
zelda
i think the OP is making the switch in the other direction – from WordPerfect TO MS Word?
AIMS
Oops! You’re right. I think my hatred for WP made me totally misread that question. I guess I would say Word is so much better and with less quirks than one would expect (quricks is much more of WP thing), and the RTF trick for transferring files still works.

AIMS –
Did you see my post in the Madewell blazer thread? The silk version of the blazer is on sale with an extra 25% off and free shipping (if you add a pair of socks to bring the total to $100).

Thank you!
I tried to respond earlier and got the dreaded 403 message.
I’m pulling the trigger, I think!

I missed the “reveal codes” in WP too. But the biggest advantage of Word is being able to have different styles so that you can automatically format what you’re doing – e.g., single spaced with a single tab in on the first line; double spaced with a single tab on the first line; block indent; title; subtitle; etc. Don’t just use “normal” style or you won’t be taking advantage of the power of the program.
Ameila
You should take a class, or your employer should offer one. If you take one outside of the office and work in the DC area, I can recommend a good course.
Jay
I used WP in undergrad and during a job a few years ago. It’s been awhile, but I also loved WP and was sad about having to switch. But they really are similar and it wasn’t that bad. The biggest thing I missed was “Reveal Codes.” That is a fantastic WP feature that Word just doesn’t have.
As I learned Word, I discovered that it is a much more powerful program than WP. It can do a lot more and has a lot more functionality. Good luck!

So I ordered the below sheath dress from Ann Taylor this week (becuase of the sale, I went ahead and ordered the jacket, skirt, and slacks) and it came yesterday. It fits perfect! and has to be the most comfortable dress I own, which you just cant beat for a suit dress. It has just a little bit of stretch and hits in all the right palces. The pencil skirt fits perfect too. As always, i need to hem the slacks just a bit and the sleeves on the jacket, but thats not a big deal. I highly recommend for anyone looking for a new suit system.

How short is the dress? Looks short on the model.
L
Says it’s 23″ from waist, but it looks very short on the model!

I agree that it looks short on the model, but its perfect on me. It hits right at the top of my kneee (I’m 5’4).

Got these shoes in yesterday, wearing them today. They are soooo comfortable! First pair of Cole Haan Air. I didn’t think they would feel as different from other shoes as they do.

These shoes look adorable. Did you happen to buy the “Palomino” color? I’m curious if the color on the website is the same as it appears in real life.

I’ve generally found the Go International collection to be inferior to Target’s “high end” Merona Collection/Mossimo Black lines. I think they pay too much to the designer and end up sacrificing quality. The others may not be cutting edge fashion, but they have given me some great work staples that have lasted as long or longer than far more expensive items.
Also, I hate, hate, hate that they use juniors sizing, especially with some of the items that are clearly being marketed to adults.

Has anyone seen this Alice Temperley dress in person at Target? http://tiny.cc/4bhu0
I live out of of the country so can’t check it out in person. Comments on quality/sizing appreciated!
Thank you!
Anon
I tried it on and was contemplating it as well. The quality is much better than the dress featured today, but it may be a bit short for a work dress (in a non-conservative, non-law environment it would probably be fine with a pair of tights). I thought it ran a little big compared to the other dresses – I am usually a 2-4 in women’s sizes and had to try on a 7-9 in most of the Target dresses, but the small in this dress fit fine (even with a little room).
I pictures this dress being worn in the fall/winter out to a nice dinner or party. The sleeves are very pretty and the covered buttons are elegant looking. The tie at the waist gives you a nice shape.
All in all, recommended. I passes because its not very summery and I’m SICK OF winter!
Anonymous
Great– thanks so much!
Sharon
Sorry, I think it looks like a cheap dress. It looks like what a preteen would wear when she wants to “dress up” for an occasion. No go here. No objection to Target for a dress, but this isn’t it.
Corporate Tool
I wish Target would put hem lengths on their dresses. “Hits at knee” is not a useful descriptor!
j
They had a dress just like this 3 or 4 years ago for one of their “GO” lines…I don’t remember the designer, but the crochet collar was cream instead of white. That dress was also adorable, and I was sad I missed out on it. Now I have my chance!
k
This is probably the exact same dress. Everything in this line is a reboot of something from a past collection. Although, I have one of the dresses that was featured (from the first time around) and I saw the new one in the store and the quality seems to have gone down.
j
Although I do agree with other commentors who say this isn’t work appropriate. This will be considerably shorter on me than the model, and therefore not cool for work.
Anon
This is the exact same dress. Target re-released a bunch of the GO Designer dresses for the fifth anniversary.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a light foundation to wear with sunscreen at least 20 spf? I saw the Philosophy brand’s tinted moisturizer in the new Nordstrom catalog and am tempted but don’t want to look like an oil slick. (I tend to have pretty oily skin to begin with and heat and humidity of summer will make worse).
By the way–the recommendation for the Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner was PERFECT. I’ve never seen anything stay put so well that was so easy to apply. Wish I had known about this ages ago. It’s more expensive than I normally would do (buying the brush, too) but really worth it. I’m excited to try some other shades as well.
EN
Laura Mercier (oil free) tinted moisturizer. I wear it every day and it is amazing. I think it has 15 or 20 spf as well. I don’t need (or like) a lot of coverage but this stuff just evens everything out so nicely. I do have dry skin but my mother has the oiliest skin I’ve ever seen and she also uses and loves this stuff.
Bonnie
Is the gel eyeliner hard to use?
S
I was really worried it was going to be. I’ve never been able to do a liquid liner and thought for sure trying to navigate the brush would be even harder (I was using pencil prior). I don’t even use eye shadow because I’m too much of a makeup klutz. But this actually turned out to be really easy to apply. The brush they sell for it is really angled, stiff, and small and it was a total breeze. In some ways, even easier than pencil in that it gets closer to the lashline that I was able to before. It dries pretty fast, too, so I don’t get those horrible “half moon” kinds of things in my eye creases from where my eye lids hit when blinking. This also could be why any negatives in reviews tend to be around the product drying out in the jar pretty fast. I’m being really careful about closing the lid tightly once I’ve got it on the brush to hopefully prevent that as much as possible. Seriously, best makeup purchase I’ve made.
Ruby Lou
Hmmm – may have to try this. I currently use pencil, and for some reason I am completely unable to get a nice clean line on the left eye. Righty always looks great and then I have to redo Lefty at least once!
Bridget
I’m with EN. I recently switched to Laura Mercier from Aveda, and I love it. Gives a good amount of coverage without looking heavy and creamy. I have combination skin, and it works well under all the conditions. I also use the primer underneath, but I do not think it’s necessary. It’s just my personal preference.
Alias Terry
Kat, we disagree completely on the work appropriateness of this dress.
Unless perhaps, one is speaking of a high school or college intern working in casual environment.
This is a cheap looking dress that is poorly styled. It does not say “business professional” on any level. So even if one could fit the junior size and vibe, and worked in a very casual environment where the style would be okay, you would still look like you were lacking attention to detail.
sheesh
Calm down.

I really don’t know about Target dresses. Sure, some people might say, well they are only $45 or $55 or whatever a lot of the ‘nicer’ ones end up costing, but I would much rather take my $50 and spend it on a super-discounted Brooks Brothers sweater or blouse or on sale dresses at a better store. I’ve gotten a lot of branded dresses on sale for about $50 at Dillards, and I recently purchased one CK and one Suzy Chin dress at Saks Off 5th for about $47 each. I almost bought a Tahari (like, a real Tahari, not one of the off labels) dress there as well for about $60. Point is, I think the $50 is much better spent on a higher quality piece like that than something not designed with good materials or durability in mind like many of the things at Target seem to be. I am not saying that the occasional Target dress does not have its place, but rather that I think there are better deals for better quality things to be had for $50 with a little bit of hunting.
