I know, the picture has a weird crop — but I saw this lovely model on the J.Crew Factory homepage wearing these adorable glasses and was immediately like I NEED THOSE ASAP THEY'RE SO CUTE. And the product page makes them look less cute, and I couldn't find the glasses-on-model image again. Womp womp.
In any event: they're blue-light-blocking glasses! They're hot pink… but clear! I really like them.
They're $19.50 at J.Crew Factory. They also have sunglasses with the same frame material.

Do you think the Peloton is this decade’s NordicTrack? They’re going to end up collecting dust as clothes hangers and eventually end up at Goodwill?
Anonymous
Ha, my father is the one person I know who kept using his NordicTrack wayyyy longer than anyone else and still misses it. He’s a big skier and outdoorsman, usually hates working out indoors or at gyms, doesn’t strength-train, etc., but he loved that damn thing.
Ski Erg
You should get him a ski erg! Resale value is also $$$$ b/c it’s a CrossFit friendly piece of equipment.
Anon
Yeah, probably.
Clementine
My MIL still religiously uses her Nordic Track.
Vicky Austin
My parents’ is getting the most use in 20+ years.
Anon
Maybe? But think about why NorticTrack went out of style – it was just kind of boring? Technology improved around it and the machine itself did not? Peloton’s brand I think has way more staying power, in general, too. I have one and love it, and sometimes wonder what I’ll do with it when I’m done riding (hard to imagine that’s anytime remotely soon…. ) so I understand the thought, but I do think it’s quite a bit different. I also think spinning as a workout medium is and was a thing long before Peloton. NordicTrack was just a single-purpose machine.
anon
Eh the fundamental difference about Peloton is the classes. I was an early adopter (have had it over four years). The game changer isn’t the bike, it’s the content. I wasn’t really a spin person pre peloton and I’m not sure if I would have bought the bike if they had the content they do now four years ago. I ride the bike a ton but the appeal has always been the content. It’s also their entire business model – they want to sell subscriptions (recurring revenue) not the physical bikes (I mean they want to sell those too but they really want that recurring revenue)
BeenThatGuy
This. I’m a long time Peloton rider. I’m a former Crossfitter and gave up that lifestyle for the Peloton. The content is what makes me stay. And frankly, the leaderboard (hello, CrossFit past). I’d probably prefer if it was a rowing machine with this type of content. The bike is secondary.
Anon
This is true, but I think there are still going to be people who buy the bikes now and end up using them as clothes racks in a year or two.
Anon
Truth. When I got mine about 15 months ago I was shy about sharing my purchase with friends and family. It felt extravagant and I didn’t want to be flashy. Now, with the pandemic, I feel like everyone and their mother (literally) has one or has a spin bike and uses the app at home. Was it a great investment for all? Time will tell but I’m betting no as there felt like there was a trendiness in getting one.
Airplane
Agree! I love the peloton app and teachers for core workouts, strength workouts, yoga classes and audio only outdoor runs/walks. The content is the best of all the options out there I’ve tried. I hate spinning and don’t have any bike.
Anon
Anyone have a favorite mattress topper to recommend? I was tossing and turning last night, so I got up to sleep in the guest room, and holy cow, that mattress is hard as a rock! I’ll need something super squishy to counteract the concrete-like mattress. Thanks!
CB
I really like the IKEA one, we’ve had ours for 6 years and it still looks new.
The original Scarlett
I love the parachute one
CB
I thought these were a racket and then I got some last year. I really do find my eyes are less tired after staring at a screen all day. Perhaps placebo effect but I will take it.
Clementine
Okay, so y’all literally solved the great ‘what do I do’ construction debacle of 2021. I got such great input last time, I’m coming back.
(Short version – got quoted $70K to replace a screened porch we didn’t really like anyway, decided to tear it down and put in a patio which we would actually use AND I get a mudroom in the next couple years to change the flow of my house but husband has also suggested a good short term solution.)
Talk to me about patios. I like the idea of stamped concrete, but does anyone have input? Any reason to go with pavers instead? Also, talk to me about shapes and sizes – thinking of doing a rectangle with a circle to the side to use as a fire pit area with a solo stove in the middle. Also, let’s talk size – what would your ideal sized patio be?
Anon
Go way bigger than you think you need. You’ll need room for furniture, a grill, a few plants, etc.
Anon
Yes. The patios with fire pits that I like are one step shy of paved backyards.
Anon
This is a good point. I could use an extra foot or two in one dimension now that we’re living with it.
Clementine
Awesome, this is the direction I’m heading in – the space we’re replacing is a hair too small (I think 13×15?) so we’re definitely going bigger than that. I think it’s going to be something like 15×20, plus the circle to the side which will probably have a 10 ft diameter.
Anon
I love the look of my pavers but they were expensive and grass and moss does grow between the pavers eventually. (Yes, they will tell you it won’t happen but drive around and look at paver driveways that have been there a while). If I had to do it again I might go with stamped concrete, and it would probably be cheaper.
Clementine
yeah, I know I’ll be the one to weed that and… that’s why I want to go with the stamped concrete.
Anon
my reply is below — agree to go larger
Anon
We did a huge bluestone patio running the entire back of our house- it was something like 35×22 (650-750 sq ft). It holds a massive table, a massive grill, a kids table and planters with lots of room to walk (we have 2 sets of French doors that open out to it).
Run conduit for water and electricity before the patio goes down. Consider the sun- ours facets west/southwest and the sun is blinding until 4pm in the summer. We are considering a pergola but I think are going to try growing hops for decoration/shade.
In our area pavers run ~$18-22sq ft installed and bluestone about $26.
Walnut
+1 to going larger than you think you need and stamped concrete. I’ve never met a paver patio I haven’t had to weed.
Anon
I didn’t learn this in time, so I’m telling everyone else–the answer to this completely depends on your soil composition, property drainage, and climate. How cute it’s going to look is basically the last thing you should be worrying about.
My property is a giant hill, with soil consisting of medium rocks held together by smaller rocks. Nothing grows, unless it’s ugly and scraggly. It does not hold water. We’re on the freeze line, so from October through April, the thermostat dances between 28 and 34 degrees, with all the frost heave that goes along with it. Pavers refuse to stay put, they lift and buckle every spring. Concrete cracks like mad. Pouring a giant pile of river rock is basically my only option.
So, my answer is “ask a pro who gets great reviews and is native to your geography”.
Clementine
This is an excellent point and one of the reasons we’ve gotten a couple recommendations from people who have done good work in our area.
This is in part of the backyard with the best drainage and actually the depth is the limiting factor because of geographic features. The width and shape and overall size are more flexible.
anon
Go with concrete. We had to make a similar decision a few years ago, and we both decided that the upkeep of pavers was not something we wanted to deal with. They look great, of course, but I also hate when the edge of a chair gets caught on the edge of a paver.
The original Scarlett
Counterpoint- we had concrete crack up with tree roots, and pavers are more flexible and easier to repair in a small area. Second the advice to know your climate though.
LP
We went with pavers over concrete because our city offered a rebate for putting in permeable infrastructure (DC)- might be worth looking into. I really like the way they look and upkeep has been minor. We’ve had the about five years.
Friendly asthmatic
For the fire pit, as a kindness to your neighbors, please consider either running a gas line or getting one that is propane powered. I can’t take a walk around my neighborhood many evenings because of smoke, let alone just enjoy my own backyard.
Senior Attorney
Running a gas line costs a lot but it’s so great to be able to just turn on the gas and light the fire pit without worrying about whether you have enough fuel. I’ve done it three times at three different houses and no regrets at all.
Anon
I have a propane one and I agree. If you’re an anachrophobe like me, it is also not a joy to have to reach your hand in there to change out the propane tank. Yes, I wear gloves. No, that doesn’t work with my phobia. If one gets on my glove it’s almost as bad as on my skin.
anon
Anachrophobe? You have a fear of time travel?
(Sorry, I know what you meant, but I found it funny. It’s a Dr Who thing.)
Anon
I put a patio on the back of a prior ranch house to replace one that was drawing water towards the foundation. I went with something obscenely large seeming at the time (17×23?) and honestly, it was the best decision I ever made. I would have gone larger had I not moved. It was on the back / eastern side of my house and the afternoon / evening sun was never in someone’s eyes — watch for that. If you have southern / western exposure, you may need an awning or deciduous trees so it is really useable (as how I know this). Pergolas can be a joke — expensive to paint and don’t protect you from the sun or rain. Also, a fire pit off to the side will not keep you warm on the rest of the patio (YMMV — this is the year we road -tested a lot of our outdoor space ideas).
Anon
I was outside so much of 2020. I feel you. I could tell you all the pros and cons of my current setup in great detail, and also that a freestanding propane fireplace/coffee table can not, in fact, handle two teenagers sitting on it. (We have chairs for a reason, people!!)
Clementine
Good thoughts! We do have some tree cover so it’s not a concern with the setting sun. I think that we might consider getting patio heaters if we really end up using it as much as I think we might… Would LOVE to hear the pros and cons of other people’s setups. Right now we have a table with benches and a small conversation set, but 90% of the time have been using cheap plastic Adirondack chairs so I think we’ll probably invest in some nicer Adirondack chairs…
Really though, it was like a breakthrough when I realized that we really wanted a patio. If anyone has something that just is knocking it out of the park for them, please tell me.
Anon
For me, I moved from a house with a deck to a house with a patio and I will never go back to the high maintenance deck again.
I can’t do outside without a couple of good market umbrellas, the big ones. I like the one I have that can be adjusted to shield from the sun at an angle and wish both of mine were that way.
I need better mosquito solutions because my backyard becomes basically un-useable around dusk.
If you want to spend hours outside reading, you need something to put your feet up on. And lots of little tables for drinks and snacks.
I have an area that’s shady in the mornings and a different area that’s shady in the afternoons. If you can swing both, it’s very nice. I have a small portable dining table in the morning area and often have breakfast there on reasonably warm mornings in summer and fall. The afternoon shade area is all about lounging and not dining.
pugsnbourbon
Re: mosquitos – I tried those Thermocell units this summer and they work much better than traditional citronella candles/coils. Unfortunately they’re somewhat expensive and you have to replace the pads/fuel tubes a lot.
Anon
I’ve been researching a patio to go with an inground pool installation, and pavers seem to be the material of choice. The selling points are 1. concrete is likely to crack no matter what precautions are taken and 2. if you ever need to correct drainage or any other underground infrastructure, the pavers can be removed and replaced. That said, I am interested in responses because I don’t really know anything about having a patio built.
Anon
My daughter is in a liberal arts major and is currently reading the Communist Manifesto for a group discussion. I feel I should post this on Facebook to f* with my Faux News/Oann loving relatives, but I’m afraid it would literally kill some of them.
Anon
We need the like/laugh options like on FB for posts like this ;)
Anon
I’ve definitely been tempted before to post unattributed quotations that they’re likely to agree with.
Anon
What are your thoughts on the Communist Manifesto? Communism has a horrific record of human rights abuses; Stalin’s gulags put the Holocaust to shame and what is happening in China is sick.
Anon
Ummmm literally what? Think reading the communist manifesto is an important part of many fields of college study doesn’t mean thinking communism is good?
Anon
Please read my comment in context of the OP’s.
Anonymous
A LOT of people struggle with that these days, honestly. They think that that a movie about communism means that the director is a Communist or writing a novel set in a racist time with racist characters mean that the book itself is racist.
Anon
which fields of study are these?
Anon
Literature, history, economics, politics, philosophy
Anon
Sociology, humanities, psychology, criminal justice — basically any liberal arts major.
Anon
I don’t think you have an opinion about it worth hearing unless you’ve read it. So who should read it is anyone who wants to have an opinion.
cbackson
Personally, I think that reading it is a really good kickoff for a group discussion, in part because of that. Starting with the primary source document, and from there digging into where Marx’s economic ideas came from, and how they eventually gave rise to the political systems of Soviet and Chinese Communism is a great way to learn history. I remember reading it as an Idealistic Young Person in high school civics and thinking it was great…and then we followed it up with excerpts from Gulag Archipelago.
onpoint
That’s a serious one-two punch.
cbackson
My high school really favored the use of primary sources rather than traditional textbooks when possible and practical, and it was very helpful in terms of developing critical thinking skills.
Anon
Not to be too snarky: I asked the OP, not you. The OP is the one who wants to throw it in her conservative relative’s faces that her daughter is reading The Communist Manifesto. Does she think it is worth reading for the purpose of understanding a philosophy that has done incalculable damage, or does she think “conservatives bad, conservatives hate the Manifesto, therefore, Manifesto good?”
cbackson
Alas! The thing about commenting on the internet is that you don’t get to decide who’s allowed to respond.
Anon
OP here
Of course it’s worth reading. We don’t become educated people by ignoring everything that we think we might disagree with. We might disagree with it after we read it, but we can’t know what it says without reading it.
I think my daughter is fortunate to live in an age where the communist ideals in the book can be contrasted with what has actually happened in the real world for her group discussion.
So there. I’m proud of my daughter and happy she’s getting a well rounded education.
Anon
The world does not revolve around you, Lauren.
Anon
Ohhhhh sweetie welcome to the internet
anon
You know the answer! OP isn’t endorsing the manifesto, she’s trolling her conservative relatives. Geez.
Anon
PS , OP here again. Since you asked, my personal belief is that everyone’s a self-interested capitalist at the end of the day, and that systems that ignore that are bound to be rife with corruption. That doesn’t mean our system isn’t also rife with corruption.
My daughter needs to learn this for herself.
LaurenB
Huh??? Why did my name get thrown in here? I haven’t been part of this discussion, AND I think it’s great that someone is reading an original source. I was not the Anon at 4:46 pm.
Anon
It’s weird that someone is so obsessed with you, LaurenB! Apparently you ghost write every comment they disagree with. What power.
Anon
I guess I would say that I think the problems Marx identified have not yet been solved. But whatever my thoughts are, they’ll be well informed by, you know, reading the manifesto, which is what OP posted about?
onpoint
Not to mention the Cambodian genocide. Pol Pot was super into Mao and the CM.
anon
What’s the big deal? This is standard reading in high school. Reading and critically evaluating a historical document doesn’t mean students are being told to agree with it.
anon
Yeah but the Fox/OANN crowd don’t understand that. They prefer to get mad and yell about gay socialist lizards ruining this country blah blah blah.
Anon
I am home alone (well, with the dog). There is a scratching sound coming from . . . crawl space? below the stove? off in that general direction. The dog, who barks at everything, is not really reacting to the scratching sound (2x so far). Time for a cat? I baited a trap and put it near where I think it is coming from (no signs of fresh mouse droppings).
1. if I had a flamethrower, I’d have used it already. Mice = war
2. time to have dog’s food out only at his “mealtimes” — this is not good to have out generally
3. OMG why? why?! is 2021 not bad enough?!!!!!
Anon
Get a cat. Somehow just the smell of my very lazy cats keeps critters away.
But I agree with you about 2021 so far!
anne-on
I wish this was true. Our pest guys laughed at me when I was like, I have a cat, it can’t be mice! No, no it totally can.
Just call the pest people – they’ll both set traps AND block up holes that you didn’t even spot.
Bonnie Kate
OMG THIS IS THE WORST. I hate mice so much. It’s the one thing I really, really do not handle well at all. My best friend and I always joke in a serious way that we should just burn it all down to get rid of mice. Can you move? Okay I’m kidding but only a little. If you’re not a allergic and you could borrow a good mouser, yes to a cat. My husband is allergic so this wouldn’t work for us.
My office had a big infestation this year in the fall (my theory is since we cleared a large lot behind our existing building to build a new one this spring, we eliminated all their homes so they came at us). We did all the extermination things, but still had to use an abundance of traps which luckily my colleagues got really into so I could just ignore the whole thing. One thing that they seemed to have a lot of luck with was this trap that is actually just a 5 gallon bucket with a top/whole in the middle and a little ramp leading up to it. The mice fall in and drown. It is totally terrible and I would die if I had to do anything with it, but seemed effective.
Vicky Austin
Mice = war. ABSOLUTELY. Sing it. Hate them so much.
(I have had luck with spray foam insulation and balled up dryer sheets since my husband is horribly allergic to cats. Also, not sure if this applies to you, but out here in the Middle of Nowhere we used to let the wild grass up around our house run wild. Do not do this – it’s a field mouse habitat. Keeping it mowed back has improved our mouse problems immensely.)
Anonymous
Do not get a cat just for this – they are not all good mousers. We have 1 that is, and at least 2 that were not. The one that is has lived his whole life in an apartment, so it isn’t like he has street smarts or something. Finding out your cat is good at catching mice is a real double edge sword though. He’s also decent at getting roaches, ugh.
anne-on
Omg I got my old cat for company when I was single in a NYC studio. She was a terrible mouser but GREAT at de-winging cockroaches. No, not killing them, just catching and maiming them, leaving me to put them out of their misery :::shudder:::
I would rather have mice than roaches.
Anon
My cat catches spider crickets (shudder) in the basement and brings them upstairs to rip the legs off and eat the bodies. I find random legs everywhere. So gross.
If you are lucky enough to live somewhere that doesn’t have spider crickets, count your blessings.
Anon
Here we have cave crickets, which are possibly the same thing? My cats do the same thing with them. Why do they have to have thighs??
Anon
Yes, a/k/a cave crickets. I’ve stepped on lots of thighs. Ewwwwww.
pugsnbourbon
Ugghhhhh we had a couple mice this summer and they are awful. One got into the warming drawer beneath the oven. I am allergic to cats but I was seriously googling about hairless ones…
We were able to find one spot where they were coming in and we blocked that. We also removed a food source (bird feeder) that was too close to the house. Then we used a combination of trap types – the traditional snap ones and then these long cone-shaped ones that used a tight rubber band. I think the snap ones are less cruel.
There are still a couple that get into the detached garage, but I haven’t seen or heard any in the house since August. I can live with that.
Vicky Austin
We had one in the warming drawer too. Just as the Lysol wipe shortage was at its worst! UGH.
Senior Attorney
OMG we had a rat issue and it cost thousands of dollars and years off my life before we got it resolved. HATE THEM SO MUCH!!
In addition to trapping/killng whoever is there currently, you need to get a professional to come out and seal off all the places where the evil creatures could be gaining access.
And a cat couldn’t hurt. Just their kitty vibes tend to deter pests.
Anon
Argh. Yeah, I had that same sound coming from my kitchen. I lived on the first floor in a fourplex. Turns out it was a rat in the basement that came up somehow – and thankfully left. I ended up getting two Maine Coon litter mates. No more rats. I doubt my cats could hunt, but for some reason their presence ended it all – plus my landlord killed the rat and plugged all the rat holes. Cats were with me for 17 great years.
Walnut
Check if your city has a feral cat program where you may be able to adopt an outdoor “working” cat. If you have a shed or some other type of outdoor shelter, you might be able to add an outdoor cat to your family who will help cut down on the rodent population.
anon
Definitely call out the professionals. We had one a few years ago and I was ready to burn my house down, naturally. The pros found all sorts of places that I never would’ve spotted on my own. They closed up the spaces and we haven’t had one since.
anon
Oh, and we have a cat. He was useless.
Anon
My cat is also useless. He is sitting next to me right now, literally snoring. But he catches a rat every once in a great while, and I’m the only neighbor for a few houses around who hasn’t had rat damage to my car wiring, knock wood. Guess where my cat likes to hang out most days? Under my parked car in the driveway.
anon
Hahahahahahahahahahah…I hate those little b*stards but I have basically thrown in the towel. Had I known when I bought my house a year ago…well, it’s a dream house so I probably still would have bought it, but a flamethrower would not even begin to suffice. An obsessive level of cleaning plus a murderous cat is the best I can recommend.
BelleRose
We also have scratching noises in our wall, but it’s just the woodpecker that’s been living there for NINE MONTHS! (yes, I’ve talked to the apartment manager, no they’ve yet to do anything about it)
anne-on
FYI/book review for those who’ve posted about wanting easy/uplifting reads. This month’s free Amazon kindle download the Wedding Game (romance novel, so, sex) was very, very cute. Lots of stuff that’s like catnip to me – people own up to their ish and get therapy! they talk about and resolve problems instead of stewing on them to increase the dramatic tension! women are shown being really good at their jobs (and its a turn on for the male love interest!) good male AND female friendships! queer representation!
Totally worth my time on Valentines night :)

I love this!! Will read :)

Thank you for this morning’s responses on my anxiety around my year end review this afternoon. It went about how I expected – average. I’m a little upset, but also motivated to make 2021 much better than 2020. We are working from home most of this year too, so I feel like am much more equipped to do this better this year than I was last year. Already got ready for bed, having a drink, cat is in my lap, and tomorrow is a new day.

Thanks for reporting back!
Onward!!

Average is exceptional for 2020 in my book. Hugs.

Any good tips for brightening dingy clothing? I inherited a stack of kids’ clothes that are in decent shape, but they just don’t look very bright and nice. No stains, but the light colors look tired. Would Oxyclean take care of this? I’ll admit that I’m kind of picky about this sort of thing, so if it’s better to move on, I will rather than investing a ton of effort into this.
Senior Attorney
I’ve sometimes had luck with bleach — even on colors. Oxyclean sounds like a good alternative, too!
