Have you guys checked out Coach handbags in a while? Yes, they've got the logo bags that everyone thinks of them for — but the last time I went in the Coach store in SoHo I was drooling over half their stock. The Drifter satchel (pictured) is the current object of my affection — I love the very classic style mixed with fun details like snake embossed leather and gemstones on the lock. It's $750 at Coach. (Do note that there are several styles of Drifter bags, and Nordstrom has one style as well.) Pictured: DRIFTER carryall in snake embossed leather (L-all)Sales of note for 9.16.24

Can anyone recommend a particular personal stylist at any of the Bay Area Nordstrom locations? Downtown or Stonestown would be easiest for me, but I’m very willing to leave the city for someone good. I’m looking specifically for a dress to wear as a guest at a fall wedding; I care about fit more than anything but would also really like someone who will find me something a little bit interesting to wear.
Anonymous
I am also interested in recommendations here. I used a personal stylist at the SF Nordstrom once and had an OK experience, but not great.
Scarlett
I feel like I’m full of unhelpful replies today, but I tried to get an appointment with a downtown SF stylist & it was all managed online. When I got there, something was lost in translation & they weren’t ready for me so they scrambled and found someone. She was really young and not at all helpful or understanding of the look I was going for. I could have had a bum experience, but I’ve heard better things about the stylists at Saks and Neimans downtown, but haven’t tried them.

Who makes 100% wool coats these days? I had a J Crew Lady Day Coat for ages and it looked great, but even with the thinsulate lining I was freezing (especially because the lining only went over the body, not the arms). DC winters aren’t that bad, but they’re cold enough that I need a REAL coat. I love the material that the LL Bean polo coats are made out of, but the styling is so frumpy. If I search for wool coats, almost everything I find is more like 70% wool, 30% nylon or something else and that is not warm enough! Anyone know who makes real wool coats in actually attractive styles? What I really want is something knee-length, with a tailored or belted shape, in charcoal or navy. Not too much in the way of details. I like classic and simple. Any recommendations?
nutella
I’m with you. Jcrew is so dishonest, too! The product description will say “wool” but it turns out it’s wool and then nylon, etc. what have you. There was a time that the only non synthetic coats I could find were wool-cashmere blends, and I would still pay more for them and they have still lasted 10+ years looking great. Now, even the wool-cashmere blends still have synthetic fiber in them, too. I think jcrew has only one this year, but no way of knowing without seeing the tag!
LKBennet
I just bought a gorgeous camel 98% wool coat made by LK Bennett – would have been $600+ dollars, but I got it for about $250 on Poshmark.

I’d look at the blog What Kate Wore and search the coat tag. Kate wears LOTS of classic, simple coats in a tailored or belted shape, and many of them are 100% wool.

Check Whistles too. My greatest coat ever was from there (RED!) and it was a beautiful wool coat that lasted for years and years. I got so many compliments on that coat!

I love my everlane black wool coat. It’s super flattering on me. Not sure if its 100% or not, but worth checking out

It’s not knee-length, but I’m coveting this one right now

I got an anne klein one from Macys a few years ago. 100 percent wool and warm (not thinsulate lining though). I’m in the DC area and its warm enough for winter for me.

This one from Max Mara is beautiful. On sale, but still spendy.

+1. Stalk Nordy’s for sales. Well-made, stylish, beautiful coats.

Check Boden. They sometimes do. I got one a few years ago that’s 100% wool outer, 100% silk lining, and it’s very warm. I don’t think they sell the exact coat anymore, but they probably have something similar. Just read the descriptions carefully–I think some of their stuff has different fabric content for the different colors/patterns.

There was a brand that had a lining of suede or leather inside the wool coat to make it effectively wind proof. Anyone remember what that brand was?

I just discovered that a brand called Eat Real makes HUMMUS CHIPS. Are they the fleece tights of 2016? Stay tuned. (The company is based in the UK but the package has information about US and Australian distribution on it)

not a fan of hummus chips and I still love my fleece tights for layering….maybe I’m missing something?
Ellen
What does HUMMUS have to do with fleece tight’s? Rosa say’s that the only connection she can think of is that you can NOT wash out HUMMUS from fleece tight’s — you MUST dry clean them. FOOEY!
Anyway, Kat, I LOVE Coach bag’s, and have 4 of my own, but NOT this one. The manageing partner will NOT reimburse for Coach unless it is useable as a breifcase. This is not so DOUBEL FOOEY!

A few new-ish associates I work with have Coach work bags (technically from the “men’s” collection). One has had hers for years now and still raves about it.
I have a few non-branded bags I use for work and they are great. However, I never pay the full price and generally go to the Outlet for equally as durable (in my experience) stuff.
anon
I feel old saying this, but I miss the days when the outlets were actually last season’s stock and not just a cheaper quality of product made specifically for the outlet. I believe I read here that kate spade’s outlet-specific items note as much on the price tag? Does anyone know if Coach does something similar? I’m seriously drooling over this bag but can’t justify the price.
TBK
Yes! I’m posting all the old lady posts today, but I just don’t see the point in outlet shopping anymore. I guess it got too popular and so there just wasn’t enough of lack season’s stock to meet demand?
Xarcady
That’s probably part of the reason. Any chance to make more money is another one.
There are still a few outlets that have actual, real merchandise, or a mix of the real stuff plus the stuff made for the outlet, but you have to look carefully.
Some of the shoe outlets near me still have last season’s stock, or the odd colors that didn’t sell.
TBK
Well I don’t blame businesses for making money; that’s what they’re there for. But it’s always hard to hit that golden balance where something is popular enough that it’s widely available but not so popular that it’s started to s—k.
Anonymous
I don’t think Coach has started to s-k though. Even the bags made for the outlet are very high quality. Maybe not as good quality as the “real” bags but they’re also about 1/5th-1/3rd the price. For the price point, they’re still excellent bags that are stylish and high quality.
Wildkitten
I feel like with the quality at mall stores (and my latest Nordstrom purchase fell apart!) it’s not any more risky to go to the outlet and load up on cheap cr*p there instead of at JCrew. I’d rather spend one day, get a bunch of clothes, and wait for them to fall apart than to take a lot of trips to Nordstrom or Banana Republic or whatever.
Anonymous
This was a couple of years ago now, but the last time I asked someone at Coach about it they said the factory stores sell mostly stuff that’s made exclusively for the factory, but there’s a little bit of real Coach inventory in the mix. The made-for-outlet stuff has FS in the serial number.
YeeHaw
I’m going on month 23 of a Coach Factory purse that was a carbon copy of a regular Coach bag (didn’t realize it at the time – I just liked the bag!). After 23 months of daily use, I’m finally to the point where I want to replace it in the next 1-2 months as the handles are starting to fray. The rest of the bag has held up extremely well and has a lot of additional use left in it!
I find outlet shopping hit or miss – some outlet lines of clothes/goods are so blatantly awful, horribly cut/shaped and cheap (HI, BANANA – I’M LOOKING AT YOU!), but others I find are actually really very good for the price point. I have a pair of Jcrew flats from JCrew Factory that have lasted me about a year of nearly-daily use. But, I wouldn’t dream of paying full price for anything Jcrew – outlet or regular store.
Edna Mazur
I got a bag that had been returned to the normal Coach store at the nearby outlet because they couldn’t sell returns for some reason? At least that is what the salesperson told me.
lawsuited
There is regular Coach merchandise mixed in, but the only way to tell is to be pretty familiar with the regular Coach store inventory.
Tash
I believe you can tell if it’s an overstock item versus made for outlet based on the tag for Coach (you would have to research but there is a stamp). I know that (at least online) Kate Spade will tell you if it’s made for outlets or not. I bought a Coach Legacy bag in an outlet that was normal quality a couple years back and it’s held up great. Ironically, I have bought two Kate Spade diaper bags and the one that was made for the outlets (and used WAY more) has held up way better than the “real” one.

Panama City layover?
DH and I are planning a trip to Ecuador. We will have roughly 8.5 days, with the middle 5 devoted to a Galapagos cruise and the remaining 3.5 in the Quito area (while there we are planning a daytrip by train to view the volcanoes and another overnight to the cloud forest). My question: we have the opportunity for a 10 hour layover in Panama City on our way to Quito, during which time it seems like it would be possible to do some efficient sightseeing (including seeing the Panama Canal). The alternative flight includes a 4 hour layover in PC (probably not enough time to leave the airport) but gets us to Quito 6 hours earlier (11am versus 5pm).
My question is basically, would you do the longer layover? Is there enough to see in Quito’s center itself that we should be arriving asap and spending more time in the city proper? We plan to do a 1/2 day city tour after returning from the cruise, but would otherwise not have a ton of time in the city itself. In case it is relevant, the day of the potential layover also happens to be 12/24, so I would imagine many museums and restaurants in both cities will have weird hours or be closed entirely. We’ve done basically no travel in South/Central America so any advice is appreciated.
Sarabeth
I would not. I haven’t been to PC, so can’t comment on that part, but I’d want to get the trip to/from Ecuador over with. If you have a 10 hour layover, then you are flying overnight or at least very early/late in the day, and I would prefer to arrive in Quito better rested in order to enjoy the main part of the trip.
cbackson
I have not been to Quito but I used to live in Panama City. The Panama Canal runs on a normal schedule 365 days a year, so you could definitely see that even on Christmas Eve. The visitor’s center might not be open at Miraflores, but that’s actually not a big deal, because the coolest part is watching ships go through the locks and you don’t need the visitor’s center to do that. In 10 hours, you could also visit Casco Viejo (the old colonial town center – I used to live there), which has amazing historic architecture, and probably Panama Viejo (the first colonial town, which was burnt by pirates or possibly the French – I can never remember). They are very different, so it’s worth seeing both. Panama Viejo is on the way back to the airport.
BabyAssociate
I have been to Panama City and seeing the Panama Canal was amazing, but I would not do the longer layover. 10 hours really isn’t that much time. I’m with Sarabeth, just get the travel part over with and get to your final destination.

No advice about Panama but I’m very curious to hear a report about your Ecuador. My husband is going to the Galapagos Islands for work next summer and I’m thinking of tagging along. If I do, we’d probably do a couple days in Quito and I might do a Galapagos cruise while he’s working (5 days would be about how much time I’d have too), so I’d love to hear your thoughts when you get back!

Panama City layover?
I’ll post a synopsis when we return! And thanks to others who have commented.
Chris
There’s one area in Quito that is touristy (can’t remember the name of it though) and was the only place I enjoyed hanging out. Lots of restaurants/ shops/ etc. I felt like the rest of Quito was very sprawled out and hard to navigate. You could find little gems, but they were few and far between (I really liked the botanical garden that I found on a run). I was travelling alone, and did not receive a good vibe. They are very conservative and a woman walking alone was not approved of. So overall, I’d say spend as little time in Quito as you can. The other areas you listed were great, the small town people are very friendly and it’s beautiful.
But, I can’t imagine trying to squeeze in sightseeing on a 10 hour layover in PC. That sounds like a lot of unnecessary stress. You’d have to go through customs, get to the canal, get back to the airport, and through security again. I can picture getting stuck in traffic or something else going wrong while you are out and not making your flight. Too scary for me!
Curiouser
I’m probably too late, but I’ve done this (on the way back from Chile) and it was so incredibly worth it! (1) I knew nothing about Panama City and was impressed by the fancy buildings going up. (2) If you are at all interested in logistics or how things work, the canal is SO COOL. 10 hours is more than enough time – a friend picked me up from the airport, then I took buses to and from the Canal. The buses are great if and only if you speak Spanish :). Note that there will be lots of traffic at normal rush hour times, and it takes some time to get to the airport. But I loved it.
Now, Quito also has cool spots (though I second the poster above that they are far apart!). I did not find the ferrocarril (gondola?) worth it, as it was super cloudy at the time. But the Capilla del Hombre (a museum of the artist Guayasamín, who did protest art in the tradition of Pablo Neruda’s poems and Oscar Romero’s liberation theology) is a gem. I don’t know if it will be open when you’re there, given the holiday, but it would be worth it to check it out.
Finally, if you haven’t settled on a tour company for day trips, I heartily endorse Jules Verne travel. They took us up (on foot) to 5000m on Chimborazo and then mountain biking down from 4000m onward. It was my favorite travel experience ever.
Oh, Ecuador is wonderful. Do enjoy :)
OP
Thank you! Super helpful.

I’m trying to improve my posture- I’ve found that sitting all day and recent rapid weight gain has me standing and sitting with my hips forward, tummy prominent, slumped forward through the shoulders- not at all attractive. I’ve been going to crossfit and yoga- do you ladies have any tips or techniques about how to sit/stand up straight and tall during the day?
Anonymous
What you’re describing (hips forward, tummy prominent) is almost certainly caused by weak core muscles. You should be actively engaging your core throughout most of a yoga class, but if you’re new it’s not always obvious _how_ to do that and I find instructors rarely get into in a helpful way. I did yoga for awhile before I really figured it out. I would recommend seeing if you can find a yoga workshop or something that focuses on core and going to get a more focused, one-on-one instruction. Then when you do your crossfit and yoga you can have a better sense of how to engage it, you’ll get stronger, and your posture will improve.
LAJen
A PT told me to roll up a towel and put it behind your spine while sitting in your desk chair–you have to remain sitting up without slouching in order to keep it from falling down. This will help building those core muscles.
Anon
Where do you put it? At what level, horizontal or vertical?
Thanks!!
CMT
I just got a Lumo Lift and it has really, really helped me to stop slouching at work. What a time we live in when we can have little electronics nag us about our posture.

Deadlift more (preferably with someone to check your form). Learning to depress my scapula and flex my lats has made a huge difference in my posture.

Also google anterior pelvic tilt to see if that’s what you’re describing, there’s a lot of stretching and rehab suggestions for that.

I have a tote-bag related question. I have to go on a factory tour for work in two weeks. This epic adventure involves leaving home at 5 am, joining up with co-workers at 5:30, carpooling for two hours to another state where state reps from 6 states will meet up, getting on a bus for 2.5 hours, touring the factory, lunch, an hour or two of corporate rah-rah training, 2.5 hour bus ride back, two hour carpool ride back to base, and then, finally arriving home around 9 pm. If we’re lucky.
What would you take with you on such a trip? And what would you carry it in? There will be corporate bigwigs there, so I have to look at least moderately presentable. The carpool part will have massive amounts of roadtrip snacks, but we will probably leave those in the car and not take them on the bus. (The snacks appear to be the big draw for this event, judging from co-workers who have done this before.) But still–water bottle, cosmetic case–I’ll probably need something more than a wallet. But something that won’t be a pain during a factory tour, won’t be too heavy or bulky, that sort of thing.
Any suggestions?
Anonymous
A purse? It’s one day at a factory – what special supplies would you need?
Maddie Ross
This. I’d probably just take my purse, though I usually carry a Rebecca Minkoff MAB, so it’s not super small. I’d only carry a disposable water bottle and just leave it/toss it if I got tired of it/done with it. That’s a long day, but honestly doesn’t seem to me to need any special items or supplies. I can’t think of the last time I touched up makeup though, so maybe that’s just me.
CMT
Food. I snack constantly, so I’d be bringing a lot of snacks with me for a 16 hour day. But I could fit all that in a tote bag.
kktt
I would look for a chic backpack purse, like one of the rebecca minkoff ones, that you can put on both shoulders for walking around. If you can pare down, I’d take a super simple small crossbody and tuck it into a bigger tote with car snacks. Either way, I’d plan to be hands-free as much as possible in case you’re given handouts or need to hold on to railings.
Things I’d bring with me on most day trips: essential cosmetics (lipstick, powder, eyeliner, mascara, lip balm), snacks, water, a notebook and pen, car charger for my phone, ipad, earbud headphones, hand sanitizer wipes, kleenex.
Wildkitten
You can probably leave stuff on on the bus as well.
I'm Just Me ....
I’d probably treat it as as I would a long flight. Eye drops, a thin wrap in case the bus is cold, a water bottle, facial wipes, hand sanitizer, an external battery for my phone, or a charger.
anon
This. And I’d bring noise cancelling headphones + audiobook for something to do on the bus/carpool if people aren’t feeling chatty.
I get motion sickness in carpools and buses so I’d be sure to take my meclizine before leaving.
Bonnie
Agreed. I’d bring a larger purse and bring a large scarf because buses get cold, a phone charger and external battery, headphones, and a few podcasts.
Coach Laura
Advil, sunglasses, kleenex pack, water, cell phone charger, wipes/hand sanitizer, protein/granola bar and Kindle would all be on my list. A large-ish purse or small tote would work.
Anon
+ hairtie, toothbrush maybe, extra contacts if you wear.
Blonde Lawyer
I’m prone to digestive emergencies so I’d have Imodium with me too. It sucks being in a carpool and needing 4 bathroom breaks during a 2 hour drive.

How are your feet? Depending on amount of walking, it might pay to have an extra pair of light flats handy. I often alternate between wedges and flats when I’m doing a lot of standing or walking during conferences and find it helps keep my energy up. Maybe spray some nuskin on your feed in the mornings to avoid blisters. I wouldn’t worry about having snacks with you. You’ll be fed as a group and it would be rude to eat in front of others if you don’t have enough snacks for all, no?
Wild Chicken
Flask. Clean undies. Contact case and glasses. Comfy shoes.
Miracurl
Has anyone used the Babyliss Miracurl? Does it work well or am I just asking to have my hair burned off? I have a lot of very hard to curl hair, and a curling wand takes me over an hour with inconsistent results.
anon
Yes, it is great. It creates bouncy curls that stay put in my fine but large amount of hair. The curls can be brushed out to give an old hollywood wave look. It takes about 20 minutes to curl my whole head. It doesn’t burn hair and it really doesn’t let hair get stuck in it. If you put too much hair in it at a time, it will stop and unwind the hair so it doesn’t get stuck.
Maintaining friendships
I need some advice about maintaining friendships. I am an introvert and it is not easy for me to make new friends and I always had a small group of friends. Gradually, that group withered as every one moved to different cities for one reason or the other. I also went through very rough phase in my personal and professional life and had no energy to make new friends. So it has been a couple of years now since I made any effort to make new friends. However, during this time a person at work became a close work friend. We went along well together and there was a lot of potential to be friends outside of work. But that has not happened because none of us invited the other person to do anything outside of work.
My life situation has been improving slightly and I have some energy to develop new friendships now. So I invited another work acquaintance (with whom I had good time chatting in the office hallway) for coffee. She called me to a movie and we went to the movie together and had a good time. Next time, I called older work friend to join the new friend and me for coffee break and she came to know we went to movie together. From the very next day the older work friend is very busy to spend time with me for regular 15 min break that we used to take. She didn’t join me at a work event today which I decided to attend because she wanted company. I had no interest in that event what so ever. She messaged me when I was in that event that she is not going to come, she just doesn’t feel like coming. I am really sad about this.
What would you do in this situation? I don’t want to lose the friendship but at the same time, I find her behavior silly. I don’t know how to talk about this and if I should talk about this.
Wildkitten
“Yo friend, what’s up? You seem extra busy lately. Is everything okay?”
Anonymous
Just ask her if she’s upset. Don’t assume you know why or that it had anything to do with you. It might not have.
Senior Attorney
I agree that you should talk to her. “Work Friend, I miss our regular breaks and feel like you’re upset with me. What’s up?”
I will say, though, that it wasn’t the best move in the whole world to have your first outside-of-work coffee date be with somebody new rather than with this person who has been a close work friend all this time. I can see why she might be a little hurt.
Maintaining friendships
Agree it was not the best move…I invited the new friend to meet for coffee at work. She immediately asked me if I wanted to go to movie with her and I agreed and went with her. So this is all before I met her for coffee. When I met her at the scheduled coffee meeting, I called the old friend to join us. I sincerely thought we will get along together. I didn’t think about all these ramifications.
I will take the advice here and talk to her soon.
Anon
This is why it can be so hard to be friends with certain women. Did the older friend think she owned you and you couldn’t hang out with anyone else from work?? It’s childish.
Frankly I wouldn’t ask “are you upset with me” or anything similar. It’s so middle school to me to ask if someone is mad at you. If you want to keep or try to keep the relationship you can ask – we haven’t hung out in a while, what’s up? She can then say it or find another excuse; if she finds another excuse, you’ll have your answer and can drop it. If she says she’s mad — well I guess have something prepared to say bc I’m pretty much be rolling my eyes and the friendship would never be the same from my point of view once I knew I was dealing with such a sensitive soul.
Maintaining friendships
I did feel her behavior was childish. But she has been a good friend more more than a year now and I don’t want to let this go without making a sincere effort to clear the air and hearing her.

hey ladies, any suggestions on a vacation destination? i have 1 week with my parents (early 60s) who are not terribly adventurous and this would be my first time taking them on vacation.they’re 1st general immigrants (here since the 80s) but have never really taken a big vacation, especially out of the us (not including asia where we go to visit family). i’d like to do somewhere fun and international – europe? south america? they would like developed world amenities though. and i have no specific ideas – spain? greece? they like a lot of walking and food and a 50/50 mix of nature and cities. not so much with museums. any specific suggestions very welcome!
Anon
If they like big cities and haven’t really been outside the US or Asia — I’d say London is the perfect starter. Similar enough to the US but different and charming.
Anonymous
I would go to London. Spend a few days in the city, take a day trip (or two) out to places like Hampton Court or Oxford. Sounds like heaven to me.
SC
Ireland, Iceland, Switzerland, Amalfi Coast — all developed-world places where you can spend a few days in a city (well, towns, in the case of Amalfi Coast) and then some time in nature or at least countryside without roughing it.
Shortie
I vote Amalfi coast. Take me too please!
Anonymous
Ireland? A few days in Dublin and some time in the countryside (Cliffs of Moher, etc) would be a good 50-50 balance of nature and cities. Or Edinburgh, Scotland and some time driving around the Scottish countryside. London is not my favorite city, and I think there’s less nature stuff in England than in Ireland or Scotland, so I probably wouldn’t do London. I agree that sticking to an English-speaking country is probably a good bet if they’re inexperienced travelers. If you/they think they’d be ok in a country that doesn’t have English as its native language, my favorite European countries are probably France and Greece. Paris + Loire Valley or Athens + Santorini would be great trips that include city plus nature but wouldn’t be too hectic to do in a week.

I’ll put in my endorsement for Viking cruises. We despise Caribbean cruises, but we be heading out on our 4th Viking cruise next year. I have done two in France and a Western Mediterranean ocean cruise. The fact that I don’t have to keep paying extra for tours or a glass of wine with supper is nice. They do customer service well.

Q for the group: Is it obnoxious to post nothing on Facebook except photos of your vacations? I don’t use the s!te that much as I’ve gotten older, although I’m definitely not going to deactivate completely because I enjoy seeing friends’ news (which I like and comment on). I don’t feel any desire to share my inner musings or photos of my mundane daily life with my 500+ “friends” (most of whom are practically strangers), so I rarely post myself. I have however for years been making an album of photos each time we take a major vacation, and I like having these albums as a digital scrapbook of our travels (I know I could make a real photobook, but I’m years behind on doing that — Facebook is just easier). It didn’t seem abnormal to share all these vacation photos when I was sharing a lot of other stuff about my life, but now that it’s pretty much *just* vacation photos, I’m wondering if it comes across as super braggy. My husband and I are in Big Law and we take really nice trips, but we also work a zillion hours and don’t spend money on a lot of things many of our Big Law peers have. Most of my friends are in a pretty similar financial position, but I also have good friends who don’t have anywhere near as much money and I don’t want to come across like I’m rubbing it in or bragging.

I say post what you want. I like seeing photos of the cool stuff other people are doing with their lives, so I would like to see your vacay photos! The people who are annoyed by it will either unfollow you or defriend you. To me that’s BFD either way. I post what I want on FB and if people get annoyed by it they can figure out how to not have my stuff show up on their wall.
I post a lot of running race pics, pics of my dog, and just stupid things from my daily life that seem funny to me. I am sure it annoys some people to see 15 photos of me climbing boulders at my last race, but I DGAF. They can unfollow me or unfriend me. *shrugs*

Yes. I think you can post good stuff on Facebook if it’s tempered with other, less good/more normal stuff. But I have friends on FB who seem to exclusively post pictures of their expensive vacations, nice cars, and box seats at sporting events – and I block those people. I don’t use Facebook to admire your conspicuous consumption. I use it to try to stay in touch with YOU and your inner musings and mundane daily life.

Fwiw, I feel just the opposite. Daily life is not that interesting. It’s obnoxious to complain about your kids, get in some comment war about Trump, or ask people what restaurant you should go to tonight (and not invite them). I’m about to unfollow this one person who posts like 3x/day about some inane nonsense.
Pics of your cat? I will “like” all day long. Update about your next career move? Super happy to hear about it. Pics of a particularly pretty sunset or night sky or rainbow or random funny looking rock you saw on a hike? Also fair play. But I do not want to hear about your outfit choices on a daily basis.
Nati
No. No one is forced to look at the albums if they don’t want to. Unless you’re using off-putting captions I don’t think you’re bragging by posting pictures.
YeeHaw
Why not reduce the friend list? I go on periodic friend purges – you’d be shocked how easy it is to delete 50 or 75 people in 5 minutes! And, while I don’t post that often, now I’m way less self conscious about what I post. I don’t need to be connected with strangers.

These days I either post pictures of my dog, my latest vacation, or about rock climbing, a hobby most of my friends don’t share. I’m absolutely certain lots of my fb friends have no interest in any of those things and don’t follow me. But lots of them post stuff I’m not interested in and I don’t follow them either, so, who cares?
FB lets you ignore people who don’t post things you’re interested in pretty easily. I wouldn’t worry about annoying people. They can adjust their feed settings if they don’t want to see it.
Anon
Use the privacy settings. Either set them so no one can see the photos or, if you actually do want to share them with some people (parents, siblings, best friends, etc.) set it so they can see them. You can even put people into a group so you can set it so just that group can see them, but you aren’t streaming your vacation photos to all 500+ FB friends.
Anon
That said, I think you are fine posting them as is. I take the position that if anyone doesn’t want to see my posts they are welcome to defriend or block me. I post a billion photos of dogs (my own and rescue dogs) so I am pretty sure a lot of people have blocked me and I am fine with that.
ChiLaw
I second this advice! Most of my pics are visible to family and friends who I talk to outside of FB. The rest of my FB-Friends are sort of like a rolodex (and I like seeing the happy things in their life, even if we’re not in regular touch).

I post vacation photos (and not much else) for a limited number of friends. I ended up being so glad I do this when our hard drive crashed a few years ago, yet I was still had a decent amount of the photos from our recent vacation in France, since I’d uploaded them to FB (also, back up your stuff!).
SC
Post what you want. Everyone thinks something is obnoxious on FB–some people get annoyed seeing people’s inner musings, some people roll their eyes at too many kid pics, some people think vacation photos and conspicuous consumption photos are tacky, and some people hate political content. There’s no way to make everyone happy. If someone finds your posts obnoxious, they’ll unfollow you.
Ally McBeal
Shoot, I just realized that I probably hit all of those on my FB page – some inner musings, plenty of kid pics, definite political content, and vacation photos. Oh well. I rescind my statement – you should post what you want!
meh
It’s no more “braggy” than other people’s soft-filtered instagrammed photos of their children with #inspiration #quotes about how #blessed they are, or how wonderful DH is, their new house, their gigantic engagement ring, or check-ins at Pure-Barre or whatever. Everyone uses FB to post their highlight reel for other people to see. So you do you, and don’t worry.

That’s exclusively what I use Facebook for. It’s fun to share that stuff.

Personally I love looking at other people’s travel photos, so I say go for it.

Is there any sort of meal delivery service for people who don’t live in a major city? My mother is having surgery next week and I would love to be able to send a dinner or two to their house but I’m not sure how. I know I could do a basket of some sort, but I really want a like heat and eat type option. Does this exist?
nan
I’ve sent quiches from Harry & David that were well received.

Talk to the local grocery store or bakery about options, like a small count catering option?
Anon
A grocery store would be your best bet. Do they have a major grocery chain nearby – even if not a Wegmans or WF, do they have a ShopRite or Harris Teeter or the like? All of them have prepared food options. I know most of them don’t deliver, but I would try to get a manager on the phone and explain the situation. If this isn’t a big city where people will just say “we don’t do that” and hang up on you, it is likely that they could work with you to figure something out — like they prepare and package the food and hand it off to a meal delivery service or UberEats or even a taxi company or a messenger to deliver it right away; you’d obviously pay for both the food + delivery, but they may be willing to work with you to arrange it. Heck it’s possible the manager even has an 18 yr old at home who doesn’t mind making an extra $10-20 by simply dropping off an order to your parents’ home.
If that doesn’t work – any small restaurants they eat at regularly (that would be suitable post surgery)? I’m thinking a small American or Italian restaurant that’s individually owned would be willing to work this out and even drive the food over esp if they realize it’s for a regular customer.

Schwan’s has some 1-2 serving options.

You can also call in a delivery order to a local restaurant.
Etsy Jewelry
Can anyone recommend a jewelry vendor on Etsy? I am planning to gift my sister a bracelet for being my maid of honor. Bracelet is not for the wedding, but for everyday/occasional use. I am thinking something in the style of Ippolita bracelets or similar – my price range is around $75.
TIA!

Does anyone have any advice or recommendations for something I could use at home to freshen up dry clean-only clothes? I find myself taking items to the dry cleaner not because of a visible stain or dirt, but because after enough wears, jackets and dresses and silk shirts just don’t smell so…fresh.
Aside from the cost, I’ve noticed that many of the items still come back smelling…not fresh, though less so. I’m envisioning some kind of at-home apparatus or method I could use to freshen clothes up. I’m also envisioning accidentally ruining all my work clothes, so any recommendations on how to avoid that are much appreciated!

I’ve been wanting to try this after reading about it several places — spray bottle with vodka. Maybe mixed with water? need to google. But I have the same issues & this is on my to do list.
Julia
That is the whole purpose of Febreze. The Laundress also sells fabric sprays that do more than just mask odor.
Scarlett
Dryel! It’s exactly for this purpose – they used to carry it at the grocery store, but I’ve found it on Amazon recently. You put your stuff in their bag, add their dryer-sheet like thing & let it tumble dry for 15 or 20 minutes (can’t remember how long exactly). Shake out your clothes, hang em up & they smell great and are actually refreshed.
Bonnie
Put them in your dryer on the no heat/fluff setting with debriefed dryer sheets.

I’m putting in my two weeks notice tomorrow and I’m REALLY nervous. I’m leaving a medium-sized consulting firm for a Big 4 and I am very excited and happy about the new position. I’m not nervous about speaking with my immediate supervisor, he’s an all around nice/professional guy. However, the leader of my domain area, the one who I actually complete projects for, is apparently a huge jerk when people leave. I will tell my supervisor on the phone, but I work in the same office as this domain leader and should probably tell him to his face, right?
Also, I am concerned that they will walk me out when I tell them. I would prefer not to forego two weeks of pay, and I have some expenses pending that I’m not happy about. The new firm is a competitor of the current firm in the same way that lions are competitors of house cats. However, they may see some conflict (or an excuse to screw me out of two weeks of pay), and make me leave. Is this common? I don’t want to tell them where I’m going, so what do I say to deflect?
Anonymous
It’s hard to judge how common that is from the outside. I would reference what happened to the last person who left your current firm.
At my firm (consulting), it is fairly collegial, EXCEPT when someone is unprofessional/nasty with their resignation. Then they have all access immediately denied. I mean, consulting is up-or-out, they accept and also expect people to leave.
Also, you don’t need to divulge where you are going, especially if you think it will impact how they will treat you.
Anonymous
On how to deflect, simply say: I’m considering a few opportunities, but there is nothing definite yet.
Coach Laura
I’m in finance/banking, not consulting and yes, if someone gives notice and is going to a competitor, they usually (99% of the time) walk them out. Be ready for that. But everyone always gets paid for the two weeks. My advice – give two weeks notice in writing to your actual boss (via email) and state you are leaving and that you are happy to work the two week period in order to transition your projects to the rest of the team or your replacement. Ask your boss to let everyone know if you don’t want to tell big boss. If they escort you out, then I would send an email to them requesting that they pay you for the two weeks. Not in a contentious way, but as a manner of common courtesy and protocol. If they don’t pay it, I’m not sure that there’s anything you could do as it would likely burn bridges. Good luck.

I am very cranky this week because my company has decided that we must sign non-compete agreements. I signed a confidentiality agreement when I started and have no problem with that, but I am furious about a non-compete.
OP
Thank you both for your advice. I’m going to repost in the morning thread for more replies, but this is helpful.
