Oooh: this hobo/tote from Vince Camuto looks kind of great — even if the lovely deep red version the QVC hostess is modeling is sold out. This pleasant gray would be my next choice, I think, although the black is close — but there's also a mustard-y “ochre” and a light beige option as well. The bag is $218 at QVC at the moment, and while I can't find it elsewhere, I will note that the pictured bag (Eliza) looks really similar to the Riley bag, available at Zappos, Amazon, and Lord & Taylor. Has the HIVE read about the explosive unnamed editorial in the NY Times about the disfunctionality of the White House? Trump is up in arms about it b/c it was written by some on the INSIDE who is saying things about him and the others. I read the OP ED and it was not all that different from what we already know. I also know that Dad wants to read the new Woodward book on the same subject. Has anyone in the HIVE read it? I want to get it for him.
depressed at work
In the last few months, my company has changed from a vibrant workplace with tons of amazing people to a ghost town thanks to layoffs and departures that were a reaction to the layoffs. Good friends who I worked with for years were let go or have quit. Now I am depressed coming to work every day. However, I’m in a somewhat specialized role and I don’t really want to make a lateral move or take a step down just to jump ship.
I know this situation isn’t that unusual. But the hard part is fighting the negative thoughts: that I’ll never get out or it will never get better here, that all my skills are useless and dated, that I’m too old to start over again, that I’m exactly at the point of being too expensive for individual contributor roles but not nearly experienced enough for senior management roles.
It’s a bad cycle. I’m used to being an overachiever and someone who is always moving forward in life. Now I feel totally stuck.
Can someone tell me they’ve been there and it’s not too late? I hate feeling washed up and unemployable at 39. But I don’t want to quit without anything lined up. So here I am.
Torin
My company was there in 2015. I chose to stay. It took probably a year and a half for the culture to recover–for people to stop looking terrified and depressed walking around the halls every day. Things have improved quite a bit and I would say it’s more or less back to a normal level of cheer. I don’t regret sticking around. For whatever any of that is worth.
Anon OP
Thanks, Torin, this is helpful.
Terrified and depressed is exactly it! I can’t even explain the extent to which things changed. The light went out of everyone’s eyes.
I was trying to explain it to my parents, who have never experienced anything like this, and they were like, it can’t be that bad. And of course there are much bigger problems in the world… but it is still a major downer!

Yikes, you have just voiced my internal monologue for the past 6 months. Please, wise ladies, advise!

I was somewhere where a CEO change had a ripple effect like that. High-level folks leaving. Then department-level chaos. Then came cost-cutting to try to make up for profit loss from the chaos. I stuck it out for more than a year. Then at 41 took a job somewhere else (I’m very specialized–like speak nationally on my topic because it’s so specialized but met a fellow unicorn with an opening). It has been a dream job. I’m not three years in and feeling more alive than ever. In fact, I’ve even moved out of specialized area now mostly and into a very high-demand area because they saw my talent with the specialized stuff. My only regret is not having made this move even when I thought I was “happy” 10 years ago (pre CEO exit) but was just progressing slowly. Don’t let fear keep you from pursuing alternatives. Things may change where you are, but you’re not as stuck as you think you are. And 39 is definitely not unemployable–in fact, one could say it’s well-aligned with a move up. You deserve somewhere that inspires you. Don’t sell yourself short. (Oh, and that workplace I got out of—it’s still spiraling. I just saw several other long-time folks leave.) You are too early in your career to feel like that’s all there is.

Similar situation here. Rounds and rounds of layoffs and feeling like I could be next, a unicorn job came along and I took it. I couldn’t be happier with my decision. I, too, felt like I had been there too long (10+) years to make a move and I also left long term comp behind, but the new job gave me a signing bonus for approximately half of its value, and the stuff I left behind has dropped in value so I’m whole. And I got my life and my confidence back.
Loyalty to a company doesn’t really make any sense in the current era. They’d drop you in a hot second if they felt it would help the bottom line. You owe them nothing. Nothing.
Coach Laura
When I had a similar situation at about the same age and point in my career (and in recession) I started a graduate degree program. It might appeal to your inner overachiever to use this time to build instead of marking time. What about a certificate in project management/PMP or a certification in your field like SHRM or learning something tangential to your job like tax law? Or something not job related like learning a new language or starting a side business?

Focus on whether the job is meeting your career advancement needs, and not on the personnel stuff swirling on around you. If it is, focus on your job. If it isn’t, look for an alternative but don’t leave until you find it. Every company, industry, etc goes through changes and it’s important not to let them derail you.

Finally bought a pair of the EF crepe ankle pants. They seemed super comfy in the store so we’ll see how it goes!
Also, FWIW I am a 6-8 in Boden/BR/etc and 8-10 in Theory, and the size S fit me in the EF pants.

Thanks for this!

Did you get in regular or petite size? If you don’t mind, could you let us know your weight and height? Have been debating ordering a pair myself but have no idea what size to get since they say size down but I would like it to be a little roomy. And I could order multiple sizes but feel like I have to order 4 different sizes to figure this out.
Diana Barry
Regular, I am 5’8″, don’t know my weight. They are a little short but not too bad.
Anon
The ankle pants are meant to be slim, so if you size down they will probably be somewhat fitted on the thigh. If you wear your regular, non EF size, they will be a little roomier. I like the latter because I am large of thigh. It just depends on how you like things to fit.

I was also on the fence in terms of size (small or medium), and the only way to know for sure is to order one of each size and try them on. I thought I was going to be a medium, but after trying them on, the small fit much better. I know it’s a pain to order a bunch of stuff and do a big return, but I found it really helpful and now I know what I like going forward.

I just got mine today (ordered them in the amazing sale last week!) and I think I need to go another size down. I’m 5’4 and have pants everywhere from size 2 to size 8 in regular rotation. I ordered the petite smalls, and I think I need the XS. The smalls have some really unflattering bagginess in the front (?? how) and just look schlumpy and sad. I am REALLY hoping an XS fixes it. and also that they’ll let me do an exchange.
Anon
Thanks ladies! I think I will order the xs and s petite then and hopefully one of those should work. Will let you know!

I appreciated the posts recommending joggers. It’s amusing that the sloppy sweats I wore in college are back in fashion again. Except they appear more streamlined now.
Has anyone found a pair they recommend that works for those of us with more junk in the trunk?
Anonymous
I have something like this from Athleta from a prior season. I have trunk junk and can usually find something there that works for me. Haven’t this fall’s offerings yet b/c it is still in the 90s here, but that’s where I’d start.

Joggers are SO not for me. I have a triangle type shape with broader shoulders and narrower hips and the gathered ankle just makes me look like a spinning top.
I do remember pegging the hems of my pants, boys even pegged their tuxedo pants at prom, hahaha. Oh, fashion…
