Mostly because of peer pressure from Ru, I’ve started a Tumblr. But I have no idea what to do with it. I mean, I can post pictures of kitties and puppies, but I already do that on FB.
So any suggestions? What would you do, if you were me, and you were starting a tumblr?
(Also, someone explaining to me what the h*ck exactly tumblr is other than a blog, I’d really appreciate).
Research, Not Law
You should post your shopping help finds.
I’m the wrong person to explain tumbler. I don’t really get it, but it seems like it’s set up to repost other online material? So, it’s like pinterest in blog form.
Merabella
I like the idea of posting your shopping finds. Or you could choose a topic and post a bunch of different options in a range of prices.

Yes, too much good work lost to the interwebs unless you archive all your finds somehow.

I agree, post your shopping finds! You could do a more formal/structured version of what you sometimes do on this site, like what you did for me yesterday: readers can tell you exactly what they’re looking for, and you help them find it! I don’t know if you get a kick out of that, but I bet it would be super popular! Good luck, can’t wait to see it!

All I know about tumblr is that if I want to know what’s going on with a celebrity/tv show/whatever that I like, all I have to do is type “(celebrity’s name) tumblr” into google, and the results will give me far, far more information than I ever wanted to know, provided that the celebrity is of interest to teenagers. I find tumblr to be a very frightening place.

I’m doing on-campus interviewing for my firm for the first time, and was wondering if you all had any good advice for questions to ask in screening interviews. I work for a mid-size public interest focused firm. We practice in a couple of specific areas, but don’t necessarily expect law students to have substantive experience in those areas, so mostly we’re looking for bright, capable people who can pick things up quickly. What do you all like to ask law students at these interviews?
Also in Academia
I interview potential grad assistants, not lawyers, but one of my favorite questions is, “Tell me about something you’re working on now. What do you love most about it?” This can be a class project, or their on-campus job, or whatever . . . basically it gives insight into what they like to do and what kinds of tasks/projects they are most proud of, and a chance to demonstrate that they can show some enthusiasm for something. I often find they’re so freaked out by the interview that their enthusiasm doesn’t always come through easily, so this is a chance to shed some of their worries and really talk about what interests them.
Em
Thanks – that’s a good idea and I like it much better than the “Tell me about yourself” question I often get, which always just made me feel put on the spot.
Been Burned
You might also think about it in terms of “when I am back at my firm and in a recruiting committee meeting, what will I need to know to tell the committee whether we should/should not bring this person back for a second round.” My former firm was incredibly selective (top ten 10% of class at top ten schools only), and the recruiting committee was the firm stopping place for hard core associates to prove their chops before being placed on other, more “important” committees. As a result, it could be a dangerous waste of political capital to suggest bringing back anyone who seemed great but fell below the accepted standards. Many a nasty comment from a competing associate on the committee could make you look bad or stupid or — the kiss of death — “not committed to the firm” if you suggested bringing back someone in the top 20% of the class but who had two masters degrees in economics from an Ivy League school (or some other great reason to make an exception). So I considered these assignments to go on campus as zero sum games for my advancement at the firm because we were only going to bring back certain people based on grades anyway, but there was a potential for other associates to make me look bad in front of the partners on the committee.
Probably TMI, but my point is that you might think about your 30 minutes as time to gather info you will share with the committee.
Em
Thanks; we’re a bit more low key than that, thank God, but it is a useful frame.
Herbie
Weird, and you say this is your -former- firm? One marvels that you put it in your rear view mirror…
Been Burned
Ha ha. It actually was hard to leave (it probably is hard to leave anywhere you’ve worked for so many years), but I am glad that I did leave.
Bluejay
Why do you want to be a lawyer? Why do you want to work in a law firm? Do you have interest in a particular area of law? If yes, why?
I also ask specific questions about interesting or relevant things on their resumes. But basically, a screening interview is an opportunity to find out if the person is qualified and not a complete dooshbag. The tough questions should come at the callback, IMO.
Em
These all make sense to me, thanks. My instinct was also that the tough questions are better suited for the callback, but I wasn’t sure how other people tended to do it.
karenpadi
If there’s a red flag on the resume, I ask the question no matter how tough it is. If I don’t like someone or have a nagging feeling, I ask tough questions. If I really like them, and want to prepare them for a particular interviewer on call back, I ask tough questions.
Flamingo
People on our campus used to sign up for on campus interview to get interview practice all the time. Does that happen with law students too? If so, what about some questions to make sure they are really interested in your firm or have ties to your area, etc?
Em
Good question – I hadn’t even thought about that. My instinct is that they’d do that with the corporate employers rather than our public interest firm, but it’s entirely possible that I’m mistaken on that.
Nancy P
I try to ask questions that will allow them to show their intellectual capacity and enthusiasm — like what was the most challenging aspect of X research project, and how did you attack it. If they can explain something complicated to me and they’re enthusiastic, that’s a great indicator. I also ask them how they chose to do something, like their first summer job — it can show their motivations. I’d rather have someone who was looking for a position that would get them great writing or court experience than someone who was thinking about the prestige factor. Finally I try to look for soft skills — leadership, teamwork, etc — by asking about something on the resume.
M
I had a boss who always asked people he interviewed to recommend a book they read recently. He found that it was a good way to find bright, intellectually curious individuals who would be a good fit within the organization. He said he’d never hire anyone who appeared to recommend a book just for the purpose of impressing him- e.g. a legal treatise.
Em
You know, I floated that with another associate who said “Are you kidding me? Who has time to read books during law school.” I still kind of like it, though. They can always choose a book they read a while ago, as long as they can speak cogently and appear enthusiastic about it.
KLG
For this very reason, I always ask what they like to do in their free time. I want to see that they can think on their feet well enough to say “I love to read, cook, play tennis, watch basketball, etc.” as opposed to “Well I don’t really have any free time in law school.” Plus I do like to know a little something about them. I actually really like your book question.
SugarMag
I hate this question. I truly didn’t have time to read anything other than assigned reading, stuff for law review while cite checking and magazines/blogs during law school. That doesn’t make me dumb – it makes me a busy student, who also worked 2 part-time jobs throughout law school. Getting dinged because I chose to work instead of read the great american novel would suck!
Migraine Sufferer
But in all likelihood, the last book a law student has read honestly would be a legal treatise.
Em
Heh, you must have known a more diligent group of law students than me.
oclg
I would have loved a question about a book. I really like to read and find the time no matter what, even when I was in law school. It wasn’t as prolific a reader as before and I might not have wanted to tell my interviewer that the last book I read was Confessions of a Shopaholic or something, but I could have pulled out something good and interesting. Honestly, in one of my friends screening interviews she said they talked about p90x for about 10 minutes. She got a callback too. I agree with Bluejay, the screenings are just to make sure the candidate is competent, cogent, and can fit with the firm/organizations culture.
SugarMag
I think you need to consider screening out people who don’t REALLY want to do public interest work. Ask a question like, “What social justice issue do you think is most important to you, and why?”

I love necklaces like this, but I always end up taking them off part-way through my day because they are so heavy. Anyone else, or am I a wimp? I feel like there’s a secret I am missing.
TCFKAG
Maybe the key is to get glass beads instead of actual minerals? Or better yet, find one that’s a really high quality *looking* plastic?
Parker - Boardroom Belles
I’m the same. Even plastic ones can feel heavy by the end of the day. For me, this is an indicator that my neck and shoulder muscles are really nowhere where they ought to be, but it doesn’t mean that is true for everyone.

I wouldn’t worry about repeating something like this too often. Anna Wintour wears the same or similar necklaces all the time. Think of it as a signature piece.

This. I have two fairly distinctive pieces of jewelery (watch, necklace) that I wear every day. One was a gift from my family, one was a gift from my boyfriend. The necklace is simple but still distinctive and I get tons of comments on it. I still wear it every day even though people obviously notice it – for lots of reasons (personal significance, love the style, etc).
I tell people it’s my signature look if they comment on how frequently I wear it.

I am in patent law, but we definitely dress more like engineers than attorneys here. I love her picks! They would be great for my office. Except maybe the low cut top. I might bring up a couple of the tops a bit, but I’m sensitive to my feminine chest being an anomaly in the office and I try to keep it covered.
karenpadi
This! Patent Law–dress like engineers–“feminine chest being an anomaly”!
I think my office isn’t quite ready yet for dresses and skirts being worn on a regular basis. But I like the pants outfits.
Constance Justice
karinpadi- I wore a dress similar to the first one the other day and two partners asked me why I was so dressed up, and if I had a client meeting!
I was also wearing flip flops at the time because I hadn’t changed into my regular shoes yet.
karenpadi
I get the same question when I come in on Saturdays–I refuse to wear pants on a weekend.
IA_Eng
Cool, thanks for sharing. I like those on the whole but agree with Constance Justice that some of the tops are a bit low.
My own engineering roles have involved either being based out in a manufacturing plant or frequently being in a plant, so none of these outfits would have worked for that (needed shoes that covered the top of your foot and no dangly/loose stuff that would get caught in machines). As I’ve posted before, I wore stuff like polos and khakis but in feminine cuts and colors from places like J. Crew.
LR
My civil engineering office skews more towards traditional business casual (nice khakis, button downs or nice athletic-type polos, good leather shoes for the men), but that’s hard to transition to women. When I started I stuck to khakis and polos, but I’m slowly branching out into nicer tops, skirts, and dresses now that I’m more established here. I’m a fan of the fancy t-shirt, although not the type featured on the blog exactly. I can’t really do button-downs, so I’m always on the lookout for good work shirts. I’m also looking for good blazers, but no one here wears them so I think I need to start with a cotton or sweater-style blazer to get people used to seeing me in them without looking like I’m headed out to an interview.
Of course, I also have a work wardrobe of steel toes, jeans, and company logo polos I pull out for field work. :D
IA_Eng
LR – Your company’s dress code/prevailing style sounds very similar to my company’s. I know exactly what you’re talking about with “fancy T-shirt” – I like ones with a print or interesting details and have found good ones at Gap, Fossil, and Veranda Wang for Kohl’s. I also wear a lot a cardigans for my “third piece” and this spring got a knit blazer from Talbot’s that I love – it makes me feel pulled together but not overly formal.
The NerdWearsSkirts
I think this is cool, but….but…I’m still shocked she suggested dresses 2 days a week. Cause, despite my blogname, and the fact I live in skirts and dresses on the weekend, I almost never wear skirts to work, and certainly not dresses. Do you other ladies?? I’m befuddled here! Maybe this is because I’m electrical engineer, which is one of the most male dominated fields? I feel like wearing a dress would very much call attention to the fact I’m a women (and, if I’m blunt, a rather pretty one), which just seems like an announcement that doesn’t need to be made. I’m pretty comfortable and confident in my work – must more likely to wear a skirt now than, say, 5 years ago – so, I’m honestly rather curious if other engineers really wear skirts and dresses that often!
sutemi
I am a scientist and while I do more project and management work these days, I never can tell when I will duck into the lab for a couple hours to troubleshoot. I wear skirts to work about 2 days a year, when we have offsite meetings in the summer. I feel really weird wearing skirts at work though many of my coworkers manage it who have fewer lab responsibilities.
Oedipa Maas
I’m an engineer in a department that’s around 10% women. My female engineer coworkers rarely wear dresses or skirts, but I do all the time–especially in the summer. I always wear closed toed shoes in case I need to go to a lab (which happens almost every day), and if I know I’ll be doing manual labor I dress for the occasion. I have ended up doing some crazy work in skirts and heels though. Oh well.
I don’t know if my clothing hurts or helps me, but I *think* it tends to make me seem more formal/managerial to the guys I work with. I will say that when I started 10 years ago I stuck with more masculine clothing, and I’ve slowly phased in the feminine clothing as I became more comfortable at work (not on purpose, it’s just what happened).
anonahol
I’m an engineer, but entirely computational, so I really enjoy wearing dresses and skirts since I’m no longer in a lab. My co-workers (men) do the khakis-polos thing, which I agree is so tough to transition to women. I don’t really care that I look much more “dressed up” than they do when I wear a skirt/dress.
Research, Not Law
Hmmm… now that I look again, her shirts are very low cut. Still like them in concept, but I definitely wouldn’t go that low.
Interesting about skirts. I feel like I stand out as a women anyway, so I may as well wear skirts if I want. I wear one 1-2 times per week in the summer. I’m more self-conscious about jewelry. I never wear anything like dangly beaded earrings or bangles because I feel like my coworkers will think they are too girly.
I was just so excited to see a fashion blogger even approach the odd engineering/science dress code.

Late answer, but Gilligan & O’Malley Wonderful Edge. They come in bikini, hipster, and brief, but I’ve only tried the bikinis so far. I’ll probably pick up a pack of hipsters to try, but the ones I’ve bought from VS in the past are not flattering on me.

So, it occurred to me today that the reusable grocery bag that I’ve been using to ferry my lunch containers and work papers between work and home could use a professional upgrade. While I would love to splurge on a Longchamp tote, I just can’t justify the expense. Does anyone have a recommendation for a large, light weight tote that is under $50 and available online? I would love to find something in a fun color or print—my office is pretty casual, but I think that my ratty reusable grocery bag might be pushing it a bit.

Also, maybe I’m going to show my gauche-ness, or lead Kanye East to never allow me to buy from her again, but if you have a Charming Charlies nearby, I would take a look. They have several squatrillion choices, organized by color and all very inexpensive. It can be totally overwhelming, but I’m currently wearing very boring maternity basics, and three necklaces from CC have brightened up my wardrobe. I’m sure they are made by small children in Pakistan and are not good quality, but for a splash of color they are really fun.

Feeling frumptastic today. Had a minor bike incident where I twisted my ankle and totally scratched up both arms in addition to falling on my hip where I now have a lovely mottled purple bruise and it hurts to sit in some positions. The part I like the least is the ace bandage on my ankle and the fact that I can only wear one pair of shoes for the next few days because they fit over the ace bandage. I don’t think today’s skirt goes well with flats for the length of my legs or size of my calves. I mean it could have been much worse and I’m grateful it wasn’t, but I’m just not feeling it today. Ok, rant over.

I’m feeling, um, the opposite, and not in a good way. I’m wearing a dress with a skirt that’s so tight it shows the curve of my booty. Yeah, should have looked in a mirror before leaving the house. Oops.

I feel for you. I twisted my ankle 3 weeks ago Saturday. I’m still sporting the ace bandage occasionally and really am missing my heels. It’s no fun to be stuck in my 3 pairs of flats.

First world shoe TJ.
So, I bought my first pair of AGL flats at the Anniversary sale, and they’re super comfortable, and the leather is really soft, but I realized when they came in just now that the sole is rubber, and not the lovely leather sole that normal AGLs have. Not sure they are worth $200 (versus the $300 or so that AGLs normally cost). Thoughts from any of you regular AGL lovers? And, can I repair a rubber sole when it wears out? I always thought no, but maybe I’m wrong?
Seattleite
I understand from a Nordstrom SA that when AGL flats start to get worn, we can take them back to the store and N. will ship to AGL for refurbishment. There is a fee ($50?) but much cheaper than replacement. SA specificially told me that that soles would be replaced. I’m pretty sure both my pairs have rubber-ish soles. Molded, sort of two-tone?
Thoughts
This is probably not much help, but here are my thoughts… I have one pair of the regular AGL’s, which I bought about 6 months ago. They have a narrow strip of rubber going down the middle of the sole, but otherwise are leather bottomed. I’ve never bought a pair of shoes that would be worth repairing, so I’m now at a point where I’m scared to wear them without having someone take a look and advise as to whether I need to have the heel portion re-done. (I’ve ground that portion down quite a bit). Long story short, I ordered a pair from the Anniversary Sale, but haven’t received them yet. I am looking forward to the full rubber sole because this would relieve me from these “how worn out is too worn out” dilemmas! That said, I did notice that a bunch of reviewers on the Nordstrom site complained about the rubber sole… so it’s quite possible that I don’t know what I’m talking about. =D Overall, love my first pair of AGLs though.

Serious TJ: Sorry for the downer ladies, but I’m really hoping for some advice. I have the good fortune to have had two of the most wonderful women in the world as family friends for my whole life (a couple). One of them is in the final stages of cancer and doesn’t have long. I have been trying for a week to write a letter to them letting them know how much I love them and how much they’ve meant to me. I don’t know how to do that without being all weird “gee sorry you’re dying” or writing the sort of sympathy letter people write to survivors after the person has passed. They’re remaining very bright and optimistic, saying they’ll enjoy whatever time they have left together, so I want to try to keep that upbeat attitude… I just don’t know what to say or how to say it. Any resources or suggestions?
L
Why don’t you write basically what you’ve said here. You wanted to take the opportunity to let them both know how much they mean to you, etc. You don’t have to put it in the past tense because even though your one friend may have limited time, she will hold a special place in your heart.
Bluejay
What about just saying what you said in your post? “I have been trying for a week to write a letter letting you know how much I love you and how much you mean to me, but I can’t find the words without being all awkward and weird. Your friendship has meant more to me than you will ever know. I love you.” Something like that.

Pretend you’re writing a toast for their 50th anniversary party.

I’ve been through this – write from your heart, tell of a favorite memory of them, tell a story, and if you are writing with their well-being in mind, no matter what the coming weeks/months bring – every sentence is a variation of “I love and care about you” – ya know?
I have a curly-girl(brand) card that has text on the front including the phrase “I will fly your flag in my heart forever” and when I was looking for a sympathy card, and paused, thinking that would be a sentiment to express – you’ve become a part of who I am, a great influence – and I carry that influence/person/you, with me.
Including a photo for reminiscing might be nice – you can scan/copy/re-create so much better now than in the Days of Only Film – with no net loss of your own pics.
Best wishes.

The main thing is just do it and don’t worry about sounding “perfect.” I have a half-written email in my draft box to my aunt that will never be sent now and I can’t bear to delete it either. I’m meeting with my cousins this fall and will express many of the sentiments. contained within But it sure would have made me a lot happier if I could have expressed them to her directly and I regret it constantly.
I have a friend who works in hospice. When I asked her for advice, she said it brings people a lot of comfort to know they won’t be forgotten–so if you can not only tell her what she means to you but also talk about some of the times you’ve shared and how they’ve affected you or how you’ll never tire of relating such and such story with family member A or friend B about the time you all did X, that would probably be very meaningful as well.

I’ve done this too, for a favorite uncle. It was along the lines of, “in my life, there are people who have been particularly special to me, and I want you to know that you are one of them. When I think of you, I think of the [thing you taught me], [great time we had doing x]”.
It was really hard to write, but worth it. My aunt told me later that it was one of the last things he was able to read, and how much he had enjoyed reading it. It made me so happy I had done it before it was too late.
Don’t focus on getting it perfect, just getting it to them.
zora
aw, im so sorry for you and your friends, {{internet hugs}}. Some others have said this, but if they are in wanting to stay positive mode, just tell some happy memories or stories about them, say, my happiest memory about you was when we met and …etc etc. I think that would let them know how much they mean to you, AND give them happy memories to think about in these tough times.
Best wishes to all of you.

Thank you all so much for your comments. You’re right.
For Macroadenoma
This is Leigh. Figured I should post this here as well as on the last thread you replied to:
Macroadenoma, I would love more information! I’m not very fond of the doctors on my new insurance plan. I feel like they blow off a lot of what I say. I’ve gotten so sick of it that I’ve not gone back to try to figure out what’s still wrong.
You can email me more information at: fashionablymodest2 at gmail.com

TJ- help me find cute office supplies, please? I just moved into a new office and the layout is dreadful (and not fixable, at least for now). Desk against the wall with overhead storage, and a bulletin board connecting the storage to the desk. My desk is long (5-6 feet) but really shallow. Only drawers are file depth, so no small pencil drawer or natural place for office supplies.
I seem to remember seeing some cute shelves and storage accessories that actually pushed into a bulletin board, but now I can’t find them. Ditto on picture frames and clocks and the like – help?

I think Kat’s done a whole post about this, so you should check in the archives of this site.

I don’t know what’s with me but I absolutely hate purple, I have no reason for it, I know it’s a lot of people’s favorite color but I’d never wear/buy anything purple… Turquoise on the other hand…
Do you also have a color, which you absolutely don’t like?

The color purple is strong enough to take it if you don’t like it. ;-)
Browns, mustard yellow, and muddy slate blue clothing don’t do much for me, but there are so many other colors to enjoy that it’s not a big deal. I don’t mind pale green on other people, but if I try to wear it I look like I should be lying on my back with a lilly in my hands. In fact, most pale, spring-like pastels make me look like I’m at death’s door.

So the new version of the skirt formerly known as The Skirt actually fits me fine and I want to order it in something besides black, grey and camel. I loooooooove the Rococo Red, Blue Aster, Green Gold, and Purple Rosea, but I keep coming back to wondering what they’re all going to look like in the dead of winter when I have to wear tights with everything. I pretty much only wear opaque black tights and I don’t care for strong color blocking (cobalt and black just doesn’t do it for me), so if I get a colored skirt, what color should I pick and how should I style it when it’s too cold to run around with bare legs?
mamabear
i ran into this exact problem last winter. I found some opaque tights by Spanx (Tight End)
that came in a color that was called – I think – platinum, but really fell somewhere between grey and taupe. I wore these tights with my dark blue and purple skirts along with brown boots or else suede pumps that were just about the color of the tights, and I felt like it worked. I am also not into wearing a lot of bright colors together/color blocking, so wearing basically neutral tights and shoes worked for me. Good luck.

The necklace would be able to compliment some of our working wardrobe especially when one is entitled to wear a boring uniform. However, with the right accessories, everything could change, from plain to chic!

With a pair of pliers and some patience this could turn into a pretty good alternative
