There are a few fun prints out for this classic Ferragamo pump this year (including this somewhat crazy artsy one!) but something about this minky, cafe au lait color is calling my name. (“Carraway seed” is the official color. Which… ok. Sure. let’s go with that.)
I like that it can act as a neutral and go with just about anything, and in general gives you a really easy, polished, luxe look while still maintaining a ton of comfort and walkability.
The shoe is $695 at Zappos.

I have wanted these ever since I was a teen (to wear to prom). Back then, they were $125, but too expensive for a part-time grocery store cashier. And now, I see ~$700 and I’m wishing I had bought them decades before now — I have a feeling they’d have held up nicely with the help of a good cobbler.
Can anyone comment on width? IIRC they run narrow and with triangular duck-shaped feel always suspected I’d have needed a wide (and then put in some heel snuggies).
Anon
I think they have lots of widths but they don’t have the slightly wider than B width standard width that brands that don’t offer lots of widths use.
Anonymous
I have duck feet and never found my comfortable enough to duplicate.
Seventh Sister
My feet are normal-to-wide and I got a pair from a resale site a few months ago. I went one size up and they fit really well.
Anon
When I last saw them in an upscale department store, I was extremely disappointed that they weren’t 100% leather. I’m not paying hundreds for man-made soles that will never break in and will always make my feet sweat!

On this topic – in my office today and even wearing my old ‘comfortable’ heels – kind of in disbelief that I used to wear these every day!

I have not put on real shoes since March 12, 2020. Only sneakers, sandals, and snowboots. I suppose I should try on all my shoes before I count on being able to wear them again.

None of my shoes fit anymore after gaining 20 lbs. And I have a pretty extensive collection. Not pleased.

Same. I also haven’t worn real pants. I can’t believe I used to get, get dressed up, and go to work every day.

I am going back to the office soon and I don’t know how I will go back to wearing my work appropriate shoes! It will be one of many adjustments back to my pre-pandemic life! Others will be wearing make up again, grooming my brows and doing something more with my hair than just combing it lol!

I walked home in my cute flat dress boots yesterday that I wore everyday without issues and got a huge blister on the bottom of my foot. Didn’t even know that was possible!

My feet have gone all nesh on me. I wore a pair of boots on Saturday that I used to walk *miles* in without issues and got a painful blister on one toe.

I feel your pain. Not just with shoes but clothes with real waistbands. I’m back in the office but most meetings are not face-to-face so I can get away with a less formal wardrobe for now. I either need to lose weight or get a whole new wardrobe. I’ve been wearing mules much of the time lately because they are so comfortable and forgiving.

This morning’s dress styled with flats looked wrong to my eye. But I decided I need to change my eye, not my shoes. :)

Milestone Birthday Gift Help
Gifting help needed! My husband is turning 40. In a parallel universe, we would have taken a 10-day kid-free vacation to Hawaii to celebrate. With that in the back of my mind, I am struggling with 2021-appropriate gift ideas. We have two preschool-aged kids, he owns a small (20-employee) law firm, loves to golf and work out (in pursuit of being better at golf!). He enjoys displaying knick knacks in his office and home office and takes pride in dressing well, whatever the occasion. Any ideas?
Anon
For a milestone birthday for my dad we got him the New York Times book from the day he was born. It’s this huge beautiful hardcover book (different cover options ranging in price) with the issue from the day he was born along with all kinds of other articles from across the decades of his life. It’s really cool.

we did this too! he loved it.

Why can’t you take the vacation post-vaccine? My mom and I booked tickets to Hawaii for June.
Golf anon
Some golf ideas: Does he spend money on himself for golf? My DH can’t justify buying new clubs (the current ones work fine) but I know he’d be thrilled if I gave him a gift card and told him to spend it on a new driver or putter. If you have destination golf courses within driving distance (Torrey Pines, Kohler, La Quinta, etc.), you could get him a gift card for a round and he could bring some buddies (or you?) for a day. Otherwise, the internet has a plethora of golf memorabilia available, if he’s into that.
NYNY
This. If he hasn’t bought new equipment recently, you could book him an appointment to be fitted for a new driver.

Light post for the afternoon thread, I’m browsing real estate and saw the cutest 1909 Victorian, but then I clicked on the photos and the original floors have been torn out in favor of “hand-scraped engineered wood” that doesn’t even match throughout the house, the dining room is newly carpeted, the kitchen has been “updated” with that horrendous eyepopping tri-color tile pattern, the kitchen has a large sign that says “Home Always Serves Comfort Food,” and I just want to scream into the void. WHY?
P.S. There are also large statues and portraits of Jesus throughout.
Anon
Most of my real estate browsing is me hate-scrolling these kinds of design atrocities, which are all too common in my area. Usually in the form of taking a mid-century modest starter home and trying to morph it into something vaguely farmhouse-craftsman. That ish ain’t gonna work. It looks stupid on HGTV and looks stupid in real life. Respect your architecture, folks! /endrant

buffybot
Just a general PSA but if you have not yet checked out zillowgonewild on Instagram, you are in for a TREAT. Did not know there were so many people with otherwise normal looking suburban homes with red rooms of pain a la 50 Shades (and that they thought this should be featured in a real estate listing?!?)

People’s decorating taste can be….interesting. It sounds like the owners ruined that Victorian home. *weep*
Add to that flippers are, in general, the worst. I have seen more listings of flipped houses with cheap looking laminate than I can say lately. So ugly. And that flooring won’t perform or look good when the house is lived in. I blame HGTV for inspiring hoards of short cutting, make a quick buck, thoughtless flippers.
Anonymous
Ugh I agree, cheap flips are the worst when it comes to flooring (and tile – they’re almost always horrible on those two things). It doesn’t even look good new and you know it’ll look awful in 1-2 years once it’s dented and scraped.

We’ve been on the market for a new house for going on 8 months, and I swear every.single.home in our area has one of the same three kitschy signs in the laundry room. (It’s either some variant of the Wash Dry Fold Iron ones, or It’ll All Come Out In the Wash.)

Awww. My 1910 house has mostly original floors that I’m really hoping the next owner won’t rip out. Also, these very pretty ornante cast iron radiators and so much woodwork. That said, I appreciate that updating these old homes is a real challenge, because it really does take higher end materials to make things look right.
My favorite real estate snarking is on the super expensive homes that are millions of dollars and they have ugly discount store decor or it looks like they never clean. What’s wrong with these rich people?
Anon
There is a lot of new construction of McMansions in my neighborhood replacing older, smaller homes that have a lot more character than the new builds. I noticed that many of them are not putting in full garages or other storage space. There is nothing like a newly built 5000 square foot house garbage cans and 2 weeks worth of empty Amazon boxes lining the perimeter in full view.
No Face
I assume they were house poor. Just enough money for the downpayment and mortgage on a massive house, not enough money to properly decorate or maintain one.
Anon
My biggest complaint are these 3500 sq ft homes that have so much poorly used space. The master bedroom will be like 15′ by 30′, with the back half of the house as a walk in closet, and then it’ll have two other tiny 10′ by 12′ bedrooms and a giant “open to below” area. I’m pretty sure people aren’t even using all of that master bedroom square footage, but they’re making their kids squeeze a full bed and dresser into a room smaller than their closet? And how often are they sitting in their two story family room and just staring at the same 70″ TV section of the wall, not even needing all that ceiling height? It all seems so absurd and like these aren’t designed for actual living.
Anonymous
Agree completely. A well-designed 1,600 sq ft home can feel more spacious than a 4,000 sq ft poorly utilized McMansion.
Anonymous
I’m surprised a full bed would work. All of the lesser bedrooms in newer builds seem to fit a crib or maybe a twin bed.
AIMS
And the furniture is all the rooms is totally out of scale with the dimensioned (empty space in the parents’ giant room, and huge poster bed for the kid’s).
There is no accounting for taste!

Clarifying on my earlier post today – I made partner, previously had a salary and did a lot for my firm. I had 10 years of upper management corporate world experience so I am regularly consulted on marketing, HR, and technology decisions. We have an elected, rotating committee of lawyers who get paid a stipend to do this. It’s harder than I thought to say “I will serve on X committee” when staff and lawyers and the managing committee of elected lawyers are all emailing and calling me for input. I need to lean out of this and I am struggling to get out of it. Example – and why I’m anonymous – we were part of that Chinese hack of Microsoft recently. They asked me to help figure it out because “I understand the tech stuff.” They’re right – I do – and I want the firm to be in a secure place – but I’m bleeding billable hours and therefore cash by helping. How can I set and hold boundaries?
Anonymous
Look at the threads you are on, and decide what you want to help with moving forward. For threads where there are other experts available step back by saying that you know X is on the committee or the thread, and as a result you are certain they are getting great input, and so you will defer to X in lieu of providing your additional input. Then just let the string go. Note that this advice does not apply if you are at Jones Day, but will work in most situations.
Anonymous
“I don’t have time to do this on top of my billable work. We need to hire a tech consultant.”

Friends, medical advice has failed me so I’m turning to the internet. I have Crohn’s (in remission) and I am medically gluten free and dairy free. I’m 39. For the last two years, I get really really bad smelling gas if I eat something high in sugar. Oddly, it doesn’t seem to happen if I drink something high in sugar like a can of ginger ale or bubble tea. I had a chocolate covered oreo from a specialty bakery last night and I was so nauseous after I had to lay down. Then I belched a bunch and had rancid farts. Sorry for the graphic description. Today, feeling better I decided to cut off bites of the other goods from this DF/GF bakery (it is very reputable so I don’ think they are messing up and glutening me). I literally had a centimeter wide piece of two different brownies cut length wise and literally a sliver of a cupcake. It hasn’t even been an hour yet and gas galore.
My GI has said post covid I can has some kind of breath test done for bacteria. They are not doing them right now. Other than that the only suggestions I’ve seen are tums, gas X, and probiotics.
The only other thing that changed in my life is around the same time the gas started I went on an antidepressant. I’ve changed meds and doses and no change in the gas. The gas seems pretty specifically linked to sweets. I’d say I have a sugar intolerance but I have the sugar drinks just fine.
Anyone else deal with this and find a way around it other than never having sweets? I only have them on special occasions but I don’t want that to be never.
Anon
Not your issue specifically but I am impossible to be around on half the occasions I consume dairy. The other half, no issues whatsoever. The body is a weird thing.
If you know FOR SURE that every time you eat goods from this particular bakery, you have this issue, I would avoid them like the plague without ever getting to the bottom of it. Are you sure they’re not using some sort of sugar substitute? Because those can cause GI symptoms. (read the hilarious reviews of sugar free gummies anywhere)
Anon
for a laugh, start with these

Okay, Albanese gummy bears are truly a superior gummy. Like they are miles ahead of any other gummy candy I’ve ever tried. But never, never eat sugar-free gummies.
Anon
Thank you. Laughing so hard at those reviews.
Anonymous
Thank you, I needed some good belly laughs!
Anon
Don’t eat the sugar free gummies and then belly laugh – sounds like a dangerous combo
Anon
I do know I have GI issues from sugar substitutes. Sadly, it is not just this particular bakery. I get it from all kinds of sweets. I don’t get it from GF breads or muffins so I don’t think it’s xantham gum or one of those substitutes. I can also get meals from the same places where I get sick from the sweets and the meals don’t bother me.
Anon
Same — no sorbitol (or sugar alcohols), ever. I read labels for this and pretty much have an iron gut otherwise. Sorbitol empties everything out with just a rumble for a warning.
Anon
Splenda upsets my stomach.. every single time. I’ve given up on it.
Anon
Your GP’s suggestion of doing SIBO testing seems pretty reasonable… it is unfortunate that you need to wait to do the test, but it sounds like you know which foods to avoid in the meantime until you can be properly evaluated and hopefully eventually treated. I wouldn’t think of it as “never,” but just, “until I can access medical care.”
You could do some experimenting to see if you can isolate exactly which ingredient is causing you trouble in case it’s not actually sugar but something else in the bakery like a starch. Maybe you’ve already done that.
anonn
Have you checked that your meds are free of gluten? I was prescribed 2 different kinds of meds for an unrelated issue and they both turned out to be the culprits. The binding agents may be wheat based. I often find it very hard to chase down the source of the problem so I thought it might be worth a look.
Anonymous
Related – something can be gluten free but not wheat free. So even gluten free things can have wheat starch, which OP might be reacting to – I’m guessing that might be the issue with meds as well, technically gluten free but not wheat free.
good luck
You could try beano, and when all else fails… devrom (both over the counter).
Anon
Beano isn’t GF though (wheat ingredients). There are other enzyme supplements that are allergen free though.
Anonymous
Not the same, but related – I also cannot have gluten (or other wheat derivatives) and get reactions from all sorts of unpronouncable ingredients in sweets (and crisps). Mine is a skin reaction (rosacea), but basically my immune system saying NOPE. I can have peanuts, but not flavoured nuts, crips with salt, but not cheeze doodles, beer, but not light (calorie light) beer, etc. It seems that food that have flavour enhancers, especially some sort of sugar-based flavour enhancer, is out. Pick and mix – nope.
For me it’s the amount of sugars, and the level of processed. I have started to make my own things. One of my favourite treats so far is the Hemsley+Hemsley beetroot chocolate cake. It’s called “ChocBeet Fudge Cakes” – you’d need to substitute a non-dairy butter or coconut oil, otherwise it’s a rich chocolate cake with no gluten or sugar (sweetness from dates). I don’t faff about with cupcake tins, and just make one big cake.
Anon
Y’all. I need bra help. I don’t know if it’s because I’m fairly large on top (DD) or if maybe they are just set closer together than I had realized, but I have full cleavage when wearing a bra no matter what bra I buy. Nothing actually separates them. As a result, the area between them smells like armpit after I take my bra off (brand new bras, regular washing). It has gotten much worse as I have gained a little weight and gotten bigger up there and I have got to do something about it. I’m single, but I’d be mortified if a date removed my bra and basically had armpit in his face ha. Not to mention I don’t care for the smell when I take it off myself. I’ve tried putting deodorant between them, but it doesn’t help and I don’t prefer that anyway. Do I just have to deal with this or can I find a bra that will separate them once and for all?
Anon
Does the center gore lie flat against your skin? If not, the bra doesn’t fit properly.
Highly recommend the sub “abrathatfits” for the measuring Wiki. I could not figure out why I was always so uncomfortable…I was wearing a 38D when I belonged in a 30F.
Anon
+1 to abtf. I used to get something like a yeast infection between mine because they were smooshed together all the time in my ill fitting bras. Not gonna lie, I had cup size shock when I did the calculator, but my new bras (38G) look and feel so much better. And getting my b00bs up and off my chest made me look like I lost 10lb.
Anon
Ps if you smell like armpit you might already have some sort of yeast situation. Over the counter lotrimin fixed mine right up. Wash your bras thoroughly after every wear until you get some new ones that fit.
Anon
Which Lotrimin did you get? Was it advertised for athletes foot or a different one?
Anon
Athlete’s foot. I had a tube for my son and just used a dab of it on my chest. It worked.
Anon
No, the center part doesn’t even touch skin that isn’t breast. I just looked up the Instagram for abrathatfits and ummm I am definitely one of the before photos. This is eye opening. But I’ve been measured several times at different places (and not at VS). So what now? I feel lost.
Anon
They’re all liars. They want to sell you something they have in stock. Use abtf, trust the calculator, order a few styles on Amazon and see what you think.
Monday
+1. No salesperson is going to admit they have nothing to fit you. I bra shop exclusively online for this reason. I started out on HerRoom, where the summaries and reviews are VERY detailed. But really, any source is fine as long as you can return the misses.
Anonymous
This. I never believed I was one of those women who was wearing the wrong size until I got fitted at a bra shop for nursing bras. Turns out I am a 30D or even a 28D not a 34B like I thought my whole
life. I’ve been fit at a Nordstrom’s and three speciality bra shops – I’m a 30D. Which is a similar volume to 34B but a world of difference on fit.
If the bra is not laying flat against your skin then is the wrong size. Get thee to a Nordstrom’s. DD doesn’t mean anything without a band size. A 30DD is a completely different bra from a 40DD.
Anon
OP here – Nordstrom is one of the places I was measured actually, along with Dillards, and Soma. I am going to use the abtf calculator and see what happens. I’ll be sure to post back with an update!
good luck
Nordstrom was terrible for me. I knew I was small but they squeezed me into a 32A which flattened me into a pancake and hurt like he11, when actually I am a 30DD!!!!!
Stay away from the department stores. Do the ABTF calculator and read the posts about determining your shape, then once you get your size, read the Reddit stickie posts recommending different brands for different sizes/shapes, and then read the posts by others your size to get more recs. Then order a few brands in a few sizes online, and figure out what is right for you.
I didn’t find my correct bra size until I was in my late 40’s!
Anonymous
How do you go from 38 to 30?? I’m confused and don’t even know what my real size might be now.
Anon
I was measuring wrong, and expecting the shoulder straps to do most of the work (which I still don’t think is an outrageous assumption; they’re the only part that is logically going against gravity).
Also, a tight bra that fits correctly feels very different from a tight bra that fits poorly. I always preferred a looser fit because bras felt like they were stabbing me, but once all the pokey bits were rearranged properly, no more stabbing.
Anon
When stores max out in cup size at D or DD, you end up going up in band size to compensate for needing a bigger cup. But if your snug underbust circumference is around 30, that’s your true band size and you just have to find the right cup. 30F cups are not that large – they’re the same as a 38B, more or less.
kitten
+1
Was wearing a 34B, got measured and now wear 30DD (30E). “DD” doesn’t tell you much about size without the band size. My chest is pretty small and no one would ever describe me as having a nice rack.
I do have bras that intentionally push upwards and inwards, so you’d want to avoid those. Maybe a structured underwire balconette bra with no padding would work for you? Some of them have the underwire go up the sides a bit further which might help enforce separation.
Anonymous
What bras push inwards? I need support exactly what you’re describing, for 32 or 34C…
kitten
b’tempt’d by Wacoal “B.Splendid Wire Free Push Up Bra”.
They stretch out over time and aren’t the best quality but they are cheap and come in my size so I just replace them often. You probably have better options if you’re a 32 or 34. I think VS has some pretty crazy push-up bras but they don’t make anything in my size.

Your bra doesn’t fit. Go get fitted at a proper bra shop. Bust Dust from mega babe helps but I assure you as a 38J that there is a bra out there for you.
Horse Crazy
Seconding Bust Dust from Mega Babe – I bought it from Ulta and it’s INCREDIBLE.
But yeah, also get fitted at a shop.

You do have fit problems (based on the post and follow-up-posts).
You can however ALSO have naturally close set breasts. Both can be true at once.
Try and get at better size first, but if you do have close-fitting breasts, you might actually never “get the gore to lie flat” because your breast are that close and forward-pointing. You’ll need different shaped bras if you are close-set, than if your breasts are widely spaced. Better options exist than the ones you have (at least in the UK and Poland).
Try to get properly fitted first, but send out a new post if you need close-fitting-advice. As a close-fitting 28H/HH (US, what 28M?) I have some good recommendations – and warnings, but no need if you only need a better cup and band size. :)
Housing Market
Someone on the morning thread was discussing how crazy the DC real estate market is and houses going over-ask and within days of list. I am in a similar crazy market (Raleigh). What is the driver of this? I am so confused as to why and how the markets are so insane right now and am wondering how this can possibly last. Is it Covid related? Interest rates? Something I’m missing? We want to move, but we cannot afford the house we’d want now because it’s all so crazy.

Low interest rates are definitely a part of it.

I’m in Raleigh as well and I think a lot of it here is just a supply issue. It’s not all covid and interest rate related because I bought my house 3 years ago and it was about as crazy then. There’s just a lot of people that move here and not a ton of housing stock, especially in Raleigh proper. If you go out to the further out suburbs, it’s not as nuts. But then you have to commute 45 minutes.

We had a huge influx from the NY/NJ area here after 9/11. I was expecting one after covid too. People view Raleigh as cheap safe suburbs that’s not too far south- and by the number of transplants I’d assume this area has good word of mouth in NJ.
Pep
Low interest rates, being stuck in a house for a year and realizing that it doesn’t really meet your needs any more, and time (no travel, socializing) to sit down and do something about it.
These were the factors (also – annoying neighbors) that prompted my DBF to move.
Hair Products
Just got a Revlon One Step blow dry brush. What products do you like to use with it? I have coarse hair, easily weighed down, but tends to be frizzy at the ends if it doesn’t dry right. I’ve done the CG method for the past couple years but I’m starting to branch out again so silicone free products are appreciated, but not really required.

If you are an attorney but take a non attorney job (say HR or compliance, outside of the GCs office) how do you register yourself on your state board overseer association if you want to stay active ?
Anon
I think you just list your employer as your employer – at least in my state it’s just an address for contact purposes, you’re not claiming to be a lawyer for company X just by saying you work for company X. I will say though that many people I know in this situation (including me) went inactive, for lower fees and to get out of CLE requirements. It’s easy to switch back to active status if you need to, so you’re not giving anything up by being inactive.

Any advice for offering condolences when you weren’t particularly fond of the deceased? I care deeply about some of the loved ones he left behind so I feel like I need more than just a bland “I’m sorry for your loss” but saying something about what a great guy he was or how I have fond memories of him would ring hollow, I think.
Anon
I am so sorry for your loss. I know you loved him a lot, and I wish you peace in these difficult times.

You can also say, “I’m so sorry,” repeatedly and with meaning, if the “your loss” would implicate you in the people who should miss the deceased but don’t — I imagine you can convince yourself to say believably that you are sorry your loved one is in pain even if the deceased wasn’t great. You can then state/throw in some platitudes about how much the survivor loved the deceased (and hopefully vice versa) and how you will be around to help the survivor without explicitly talking about the deceased. Take the focus off your relationship or thoughts with the deceased and center them around how the deceased made his loved ones feel or, in the worst case scenario, how the loved ones need to cope without him. You can do this.
