A purple pump — and a strappy one? Sign. Me. Up. These come in a lot of great colors, including a lovely taupe, as well as two blacks (suede and calf) — but the “oxblood” winey color is my favorite. I like the zipper closure in the back, as well as the 3.25″ heel height. The shoe is $138 at Zappos, available in half sizes 5-11. Corso Como Carroll Pump Here's a similar shoe that comes in four widths. (L-2)Sales of note for 9.10.24

Maybe I am just out of it, but these don’t look like work shoes to me. Shoes I’d wear to a c-tail party, sure. Work, no.
Anonymous
If wear them to work, but not when it’s cold out if I’d be meeting people for the first time.
Anon Worker Bee
I definitely would not wear them to work.
Cat
I’d only wear these with wide legged pants, such that you’d only see the tip of the purple suede in the office. The straps + zipper read casual/party to me.
Susie
Call me a rebel then because I would wear them to work ;)
ASmelia Bedelia
meee tooo. I completely would. and I might day after tomorrow . . .
Amelia Bedelia
interesting new name I’ve given myself!
Susie
As long as you only add one ‘S’ not two!
Anne Elliott
I would totally wear these to work. Business casual office.
Anonymous
They look officey to me. The straps are too wide to be s*xy.
TO Lawyer
Ya these don’t look s3xy enough for a non-work shoe – low heel and thicker straps. I think I would definitely wear them to work – I actually really like strappy shoes for work.
Bonnie
I would wear these to work without any hesitation. Gorgeous.
Anonymous
Me too, and some of these comments confuse me. What is s*xy about a thinner strap? That just seems so particular.
NYNY
It’s similar to my rule for office sandals (in places which allow sandals in the first place): More shoe, less foot = office appropriate; Less shoe, more foot = not office appropriate. Thinner straps show more skin, and even though it’s often skin which would be exposed in a normal pump, the strap across said skin calls attention to its skin-ness.
MJ
Genuinely curious….you’d wear these with tights? nylons? with a skirt? with pants?
I wear pencil skirts, tops, button-fronts and a lot of cashmere sweaters and maybe they’re just too dressy for my wardrobe.
I am genuinely curious how you’d style these.
Amelia Bedelia
I would wear them with a plain sheath dress; with a pencil skirt and silk blouse; with pants (wider leg). I am not sure I would wear them with tights until I see them in person.
Susie
I do bare legs 8-9 months of the year in California, workplace fairly casual. The oxblood I would wear with nude for me nylons in the winter (the black version I would do with nude nylons or black tights – I don’t really wear tights with a different color shoe and the only color tights I wear are black or grey).
Though I wear mostly skirts myself, they would work well with trousers or any bootcut/flared/wideleg pant. Not sure the strap placement would work with closer fitting pants.
Baconpancakes
I have a red suede and tan leather pair with a very similar shape – I wear them with black trousers and a black or red silk blouse, or with nude hose, a camel The Skirt, and red silk blouse, or with black tights and a black sheath dress.
Anonymous
personally, I don’t like them. But if I were to like them and wear them, I’d wear them with (1) wide leg slacks, (2) ankle pants, and/or (3) flouncy skirt, probably with tights that matched the shoes. I think the heel is a little low and the straps are placed just so, that it would shorten my already short legs if I wore a pencil skirt/dress.
Anne Elliott
I would wear these with a dress. Or pants. Or a skirt.
Or even with my Regency evening gown:)

I think it’s time to replace my pillows. I’m reading through reviews, but do you all have ones that you just love?
FWIW, I toss and turn through all the sleeping positions (with stomach>side>back as my order of comfort/best sleep) and feather-free/any other allergy friendly qualities are a plus.
Also in Academia
That is so funny, I was coming here to post a similar question. I’ve decided that I no longer have to sleep on terrible pillows. I am a back and side sleeper who would like firm pillows. Anyone have any favorites?
Anonymous
Mine are all Westin brand, which I bought after testing many, many times while traveling for work. Nordstrom sells them and had them on sale for their NAS.
Anonymous
Yes, Westin pillows are the best!!!
BB
Can you describe? Are they down? Soft or firm?
Anonymous
They have multiple.
Anonymous
All natural latex pillows were a life changer for me.
BB
Tagging onto this: I’m looking for a down pillow that doesn’t flatten too quickly. I’ve had them in some hotels, and ended up ordering ones from Pacific Coast Down. The PCD ones are super fluffy when you fluff them up, but flatten pretty quickly. I want something that cradles my head all night.
padi
Try the Hotel Collection at Macys. They have some that are filled enough to be labeled “firm” or “extra firm.” I splurged a few years ago and got a set on sale. Whenever they start deflating, I machine wash and dry them with some Lacrosse balls and the “poofiness” comes right back.
In the Pink
Shredded bamboo pillows! Found them in a great hotel in Buenos Aires and then on the related cruise line. Can’t say enough. We got ours through amazon of course, but they are wonderful.
moss
I got a nice down pillow at TJ Maxx. It is Tahari brand; so far stays fluffy through the night.
Sydney Bristow
I got a Tempurpedic Symphony pillow and I love it. I wasn’t sure whether to spend the money but it’s been totally worth it. I like a substantial pillow that also feels a little soft to the touch, if that makes sense.
I’ve had it for a couple of months at this point and totally love it. My husband says I’ve been snoring a lot less than before the pillow too.
I also love the pillows at the Westin so I’d consider that too.
Em
Jumping on this to ask if anyone has recommendations for a fairly flat pillow that nevertheless has a bit of softness to it? I have one of the “stomach sleeper” pillows from Ikea, which is the flattest I’ve found, but it’s totally beaten down now and I’d prefer to replace it with something that’s a little more durable.

Drinks at an interview?
I have an informal interview at a four star resturant/bar right at the end of the work day. I am assuming that this means drinks, but I rarely drink. I maybe have 3 drinks in a month, and I don’t know a lot of drinks so I order a vodka soda or similarly simple drink. Is this an acceptable thing to order? Should I just drink water? I realize the possibly ridiculousness of this question, but I feel like everyone judges what the other person drinks. I love martinis, but I also have no alcohol tolerance and so that would be way too much alchohol for a business-y meeting. It’s a cocktail bar, but I don’t think I would be taken seriously if I was drinking a margarita or similarly “girly drink”.
Anonymous
Order a glass of Pinot Grigio, sip it slowly.
Anonymous
I’d go for this as well. It keeps things safe – I’ve had bartenders be ‘nice’ and give me a double shot with mixed drinks when I’m out for business and trying to stay mostly sober. In general I’ll avoid mixed drinks, unless that bar has some nice specialty mixed drinks that are tempting.
Anonymous
To clarify, I don’t think vodka soda is inappropriate, just a big strong if you aren’t a drinker.
Senior Attorney
I agree with wine, but unless it’s still hot where you are, I’d go with a red. Pinot Noir is nice and light.
Clementine
You know, I’m much more of a red wine drinker when it’s cold out, but for networking events I still go with white for two reasons: fear of purple teeth and that I’m a spill-er.
(Actually, I haven’t spilled a glass of wine or coffee on me in a while, I’m probably about due…)
Brunette Elle Woods
This. I often prefer red wine, but I’ll go for white in professional settings because I don’t want the purple/red marks on the outer corners of my mouth.
Senior Attorney
Good point.
Carry on…
emeralds
If you like vodka sodas, order a vodka soda. I don’t think anyone’s going to judge you for a commonly-ordered drink like that. Or you can ask the bartender for a recommendation or pick something cool and lower-alcohol than a martini of the cocktail menu, if it’s a nice place.
Lyssa
I would try to let at least one interviewer order first, then say “Oh, that sounds good; I’ll have that, too.” Alternatively, I think that ordering a soda or iced tea is fine (not water, though). Vodka soda seems weird to me just because I don’t think that I’ve ever seen anyone order it (even when I waited tables) and it seems like it would have no flavor at all, but I wouldn’t think it would actually raise eyebrows (I’d actually probably think that you’re some sort of a vodka connoisseur or something). I might go with a gin & tonic or rum & coke instead, just because those seem like more common drinks without being fussy sounding. White wine is also a great option (I would avoid red in an interview because of what the color does to your lips and teeth).
Anonymous
I’d nix the rum and coke option for a work etting. That telegraphs really young to me. (I’m in finance; people are snooty about their drinks)
Anon
+1 to nixing the rum & coke. I feel like it’s only a half step up from a midori sour…
Anonymous
I’m starting to understand why bar tenders always chuckle when I order a rum and coke. and here I was thinking it was a safe go-to when I don’t wanna seem too girly.
Pretty Primadonna
Same. Rum and Coke does not read as a sophisticated drink at all.
Anon
Rum and coke makes me think of frat houses.
Cat
I see no issue with a vodka soda – it’s a popular drink amongst my friends, but it’s not juvenile sounding IMO. I agree with the G&T advice or a glass of wine – red OR white – but wouldn’t do a rum drink at an interview unless you were at a specialty bar known for fancy rums.
Anonymous
I think vodka soda is pretty common. It’s probably the go to drink for half my friends when we are out. But this is LA, and everyone is pretty health conscious.
Anonymous
I think vodka sodas are more popular recently. I never saw people drinking them 15 years ago. It never even occurred to me that they were a drink people would order.
Anonymous
They’ve been all over SF and LA for at least 15 years. But… I mean, it’s a typical California heathly thing.
Susie
My old standard used to be vodka & cranberry, and I recently switched to raspberry vodka w/ soda. Less sugar I think.
Lyssa
I’m sure that drink popularity is very regional! My point is, get what you want, it’s probably not that big of a deal. :)
Cream Tea
I would order a glass of white wine, and a glass of water. That way you can drink water while still also joining in on the drink.
lawsuited
I’d order one of my normal drinks, so either a Hendrick’s G&T or a glass of Cabernet, but I don’t think either of those telegraph anything in particular.
Batgirl
I think vodka soda is totally fine to order. Otherwise, I think white wine would be best (not too strong, gives off a classy vibe, and won’t stain your teeth) if you enjoy wine. I do think that avoiding alcohol altogether could (unfairly) either raise a flag (i.e. is she pregnant? a Puritan? recovering alcoholic?) or make the interviewer feel self-conscious if they order alcohol.
BeenThatGuy
You’re an adult. If you rarely drink, and don’t want to, don’t. Just order a water or a soda. If you were in recovery, would you be so worried about being judged?
Anonymous
This. There are a whole bunch of reasons why people don’t drink – choice, religion, recovery – and it’s nobody else’s business. If someone makes a big deal out of it, that’s on them, not you. Don’t feel pressure to drink if you don’t want to.
Anon0321
But, she didn’t say she NEVER drinks, only that she rarely drinks. I think if the stakes are low (friends, or someone is trying to sell themselves to you), than this advice is fine. But during an interview (which this is), fit is a huge motivator in picking someone for a role and you want to make yourself stick out only in positive ways, not nit-picky or annoying ways. To me, not ordering a drink & holding it, is using your “different capitol” on something that it shouldn’t be wasted on.
Also agree with the posters above that vodka soda is fine. Wine is always great… and if it is in Boston, and you like beer, go with beer. :)
Snickety
I always order a club soda with lime when I’m at a cocktail event and am not partaking. It looks like a drink.
SC
I did this at a family wedding. Everyone knew I was pregnant in about an hour.
Snickety
Hmm. Either your family had reason to be suspicious, or I have been blissfully aware of people assuming I was pregnant at cocktail events.
Wildkitten
Know which vodka you want if you are ordering vodka and order it by brand name.
AN
Put on your big girl pants and order what you want to drink. Don’t get so paranoid about it. The job offer should not be contingent on whether or not you drink alcohol.

Fellow x-philes, I just saw the promo for January and decided to do a rewatch before the reboot. Am I watching all the seasons? Pretending the last 2 (and movies) didn’t happen? Help decide my game plan here!
Gail the Goldfish
My plan is to watch them all, skipping the episodes I remember freaking me out excessively (like Squeeze) or that were just boring. I don’t really want to watch the last 2 seasons and movie again, but I can’t remember where the plot left all, so I feel like I need to. I’m way behind on rewatching, though. I also need to rewatch Gilmore Girls again now too (in case anyone missed it–Netflix is bringing back Gilmore Girls for a limited run!)
buffybot
Hat tip for the name, there.
Every so often I get it in my head that I’m going to rewatch the X-Files and then I start and it turns out….there were a LOT of episodes (back in the good old days of TV shows doing 20+ shows a season) and many of them…have not aged well. Unfortunately, I do not think that the “mythology” arc episodes have held up particularly well, either (thought they are probably the most relevant to getting up to speed for the new episodes).
I usually just like to hop around through the seasons, with a special focus on the funny ones (e.g., Jose Chung’s From Outer Space, Bad Blood) or the ones with key moments in the development of the Mulder/Scully relationship (because I shipped them, and I shipped them hard, and always will)
qeequag
I must have watched each ep a million times back in the day, but I’ve found it hard to sit and start again, too. I figured now that it was getting colder out, and I’ve got some motivation. I don’t think I’ll be lost per se come January if I don’t rewatch, but I don’t want to miss anything!
Beth Childs
My strategy has been to rewatch everything in order, interspersing the movies in their appropriate locations. It is taking a boatload of time, but it’s also nice to look back on the flow of the series as a whole. I also didn’t want to miss an old episode just to find out down the road that it’s being rethreaded into the plotline for the new episodes in January. My level of dedication is a bit nutty, so I’ve also been catching the comic book season that’s being run currently. If the plotlines in the comic are followed in the new episodes, we will be spending some time following up on one of my least favorite episodes – Home. So creeped out by the Peacock family.
Gail the Goldfish
“Home” is on my “freaked me out excessively and will not be rewatching” list.
BB
Yup. That’s on my list. Watched a bit of “Squeeze” the other night and didn’t find it nearly as creepy as I remembered.

Has anyone ever had invisalign? I’d like to get them this year on my bottom teeth. Would be interested in hearing experiences (both positive and negative)
anonymous
Not I but all my friends who’ve had them loved the results and were ok with the challenges while invisalign was on.
Chicago Gal
I have Invisalign right now, and am about a month away from being done (except for the retainer…) It’ll be 7-8 months total for me.
Pluses:
I like that my teeth are straighter now.
It’s not too obvious that I’ve got anything on my teeth.
I have adjusted to basically no snacking.
I’ve stopped biting my nails.
I brush and floss many times a day– my dental hygiene was far from poor before starting, but has improved significantly, and hopefully some of this sticks over time.
Minuses:
YMMV, but on my teeth, Invisalign =/= Invisible. I’ve got (clear) brackets on my front teeth, and when I smile with my trays in, it’s very obvious that something’s going on there (but I’m happy it’s not a mouth full of silver.)
I have a slight lisp with the trays in– if I’m doing any sort of presentation, or have a job interview, or similar, I remove the trays.
I have regular dry mouth and usually have to drink a ton of water. Not a bad thing, just a PITA on occasion.
The cost (~$3000) is on the high side and may not be covered by your dental insurance.
curious
Who is your Chicago doctor? I’ve been looking around.

I see Dr. Delacruz at Ora Dental in the West Loop. Close to the Morgan stop on the green line.

I just finished. I’m not happy with the results. After one refinement, I was told, “this is as good as it’s going to get”. The teeth have already started to shift even though I have been diligent with the retainers. The whole time, I felt like my teeth were suffocating. Do yourself a favor, get regular braces or veneers.
Anon0321
Teeth often shift afterwards even with regular braces. I had braces when I was 13-15 & then wore my retainer for a bit afterwards, and now my teeth are basically back to how they were before braces (I always had straight teeth, just a bad overbite, which is back).
My husband has a permanent retainer on his lower teeth (he also had braces during his teens & now we are in our 30s). Our Dentist basically told him that if he wants to keep the results, he needs to keep the retainer in forever– as soon as he gets it removed, they will start shifting back. On the plus side, you can’t really site it, it’s like a silver wire in back of his teeth.
shadow
I’ve been looking to get into braces and I think the consensus now is you have to wear the retainer for life, even if it’s a hawley retainer and not a permanent one. Some ortho have said you’re supposed to wear it 24/7 for a couple of months after the braces come off (or after invisalign treatment), and then nightly for the rest of your life.
Anonymous
It’s true that you need to wear it 24/7 at first, but then you can start reducing to 12 hours per day, and gradually reducing from there. The biggest reduction comes when you get your wisdom teeth removed (because most people with regular braces are tweens who then get wisdom teeth removed in high school college)–once the wisdom teeth are out, the teeth don’t shift as much and you can cut down on retainer wear a lot. I would imagine if you are an adult with no wisdom teeth getting metal braces, your retainer schedule will be less strict from the get-go.
My lateral incisors are still prone to a little rotation, and on the instruction of my ortho I probably wear mine for about 7-8 hours one night every 2-3 weeks and it guides them right back into place. I’ve been out of braces for about 15 years but see him regularly in extended network gatherings.
AZCPA
I did it about 10 years ago now, and am still extremely happy with the results. Wore them 8 months total, and still (about once a week) wear my retainers now. I would agree with Chicago Gall on both the pluses and minuses, though I’d emphasize that the minuses (for me) didn’t feel very significant. Whether you need the clear brackets (and what teeth) depends on what is specifically is wrong, since they help move more crooked or stubborn teeth. I only had two brackets, and they were on side teeth – I felt like you really had to look to notice I had the trays in. Regular braces are very garish, food gets stuck in them, etc – a valid option if you are cutting costs, but in most cases don’t take any less time and are far more awful to have. And veneers do not solve crooked teeth, plus they ruin the teeth underneath, so if yours are healthy it’s a terrible option.
Alli
I had them and liked them a lot. They were pretty effective, but I will caution you to make sure your teeth are exactly how you want them before the orthodontist says you are finished. I let mine tell me I was finished, and now there are still a few things I would tweak about my teeth’s alignment. Don’t be afraid to say you think that third tooth is still a little crooked, etc. Also, it’s super easy to take the aligners out if you want them out during a meeting, important presentation, etc., but do try to wear them all the time whenever you can. I fell into a habit of taking them out a lot and sometimes even only wearing them to sleep (which is probably why I’m not perfectly happy with the final result, ha). The marketing makes it seem that they are unnoticeable, which I will say is not really true– people can tell you have something in your mouth, and it affects your speech, but certainly not as much as metal braces. I think it’s a good and relatively low-attention method, especially if you are considering it for bottom teeth only.
Anonymous
My orthodontist was very clear about the differences between Invisalign and braces & a perfectionist so he wanted me to get braces. I had Invisalign and I’m extremely happy with the results. I didn’t want to deal with a mouth full of metal at this stage of my life.
I used AcceleDent and that cut my time in half. It cost $800 and was well worth it when I factored how much that would be a month. I changed trays every week rather than every two weeks.
I found it difficult when I was traveling because it involves taking them out to eat and then brushing teeth before putting them back in and doing this in public restrooms is not fun. It cut down on my mindless eating! Be aware that if you drink anything but water the trays will get stained.
Midwesterner
word of advice, go to an orthodontist and not a dentist. I made the mistake of getting Invisalign through my dentist and it became clear that she truly was out of her element and Invisalign itself is pretty incompetent. All I wanted to do was fix two slightly out of line incisors and it took four adjustments before Invisalign finally got it “right.” What they said would take five months has taken 19 months (with one more month to go) and is still not quite right. And I’ve definitely been very good about wearing them nearly all the time. There are just some movements Invisalign is not equipped to do (they kept trying to pull my incisors down which failed miserably and wasn’t what I wanted anyhow, but it took a year to explain that to Invisalign) Also, if you never had braces, it will be a huge shock as to how not invisible they are. Also, they glue a bunch of attachments to your teeth for torque that can be really obtrusive even when you’re not wearing the aligners (where they go depends on what needs to move).
I also think it ruined my healthy eating habits for several months. I usually eat small snacks/meals throughout the day but it was so annoying to have to brush my teeth every two hours I wouldn’t eat for hours and end up famished and then completely overdo it. The “Invisalign diet” turned out to be a joke.
All in all, I would never ever ever recommend it to anyone. I should have just sucked it up and gotten metal braces for four months and been done with it.

Yes!!! I have *thoughts* on this!
I think the mini-movies is a much better format than trying to do a 22 episode season of TV. I think I might be the only person who doesn’t think Season 7 was awful. I actually thought Season 6, when the Palladinos were still running it, was worse and I especially hated the season 6 finale, which sort of required the new showrunners to go where they did in Season 7. And I actually really liked the series finale, which I thought was incredibly charming and neatly tied up all the storylines in a satisfying way that still felt earned and not overly spelled out. I liked getting just a hint of where the Luke and Lorelai storyline was going, where her relationship with her parents was going, etc.
Buuuut…I’m still super curious to see what ASP’s vision for the characters is, where they’re all at and what those final four words are! I assume they will work Ed Herrmann’s death into the storyline, and much as I love both the actor and the character, I think seeing Emily as a widow will be fascinating new material. I hope L&L have had baby(ies!)
I will be curious which of Rory’s boyfriends come back, I’m sure the fans want to see all of them again but I can’t think of a way for all three of them to come back that wouldn’t feel artificial.
Maybe this is totally off-base (I hope so!) but I suspect there is some bad blood between Melissa McCarthy and the others involved. Yes, she’s super busy, but I thought it was incredibly odd that she wasn’t even *mentioned* at the reunion, especially with Ed Herrmann spoken about so much and so many minor characters (e.g. Doyle) in attendance. I’d be shocked if she appears in the Netflix episodes.
Anonymous
Also as a big Good Wife fan, I kind of want them to write into the storyline that Logan became a lawyer and is now running a firm with somebody named Diane Lockhart :) I feel like Cary Agos and Logan are largely the same character anyway.
Brit
I agree – I really liked Season 7. I may be the lone voice of dissent, but I liked Logan. Not that I’m team Logan for the long-run, but I thought he was the boyfriend that Rory needed at the time, in the same way that Dean (the first time, NOT the second time) and Jess were.
Rural Juror
I somehow did not hear this, and it made me extremely happy to read just now, and also all of these comments about the show have made me extremely happy. Man I love GG.
