Crowd sourcing gift ideas for a 23-year-old coworker I drew in my work Secret Santa. There’s no budget (wtf) but I’ve heard that people typically spend $75-$100.
I’m new at the job and don’t really know the coworker, but she seems like a pretty normal 23 year old. We’re in NYC if that helps.

Sparkling wine. And champagne flutes, if you like. It’s not creative, but it is easy and likely to please.
I’m in NYC biglaw (for context) and would find a budget of $75-100 truly obnoxious. Secret Santa at work is supposed to be fun and for a nominal amount. My office is doing a $40 one this year, but I think $25 would be more appropriate.

To be clear, I am not advocating that you don’t comply with the accepted budget, just being judge-y about your coworkers setting that high of a budget.
Anonymous
Yea, that’s cray.

Right? Good Lord! WTF indeed.

That budget is so far outside the norm. Maybe double-check with another co-worker or two to make sure that this is really true?
Anonymous
That budget is insane. When I worked in Big Law our white elephant limit was….$10.

+1
And to be honest…. If I was 23, the last thing I would want is pricey champagne and flutes.

Sephora gift card.

Hmm for that much? Maybe a nice wallet or purse? Some “useful if youre new to the workplace” thing that shell actually get to use? Would a business card holder make sense in your office?
I’m 22 but I literally don’t know who would give me a gift worth that much other than someone I’m related to or in a relationship with.

Kate Spade wallet or wristlet with a gift receipt included. But I agree that budget is cray.

Thanks, all! I agree that the budget is totally insane but I’ve verified it with multiple coworkers!

23-year-old here. Gift card to restaurant or Macy’s/Nordstrom would be appreciated if gift cards are kosher for the secret Santa. Otherwise, I agree with the suggestions of a wristlet or small card holder. Since she’s presumably fresh out of school, other home-y or kitchen-y things might be nice (like a fancy marble cheese serving dish or a nice knife) but that might depend on the person. A Roku is a great gift for young people who might not have cable, but that’s pretty specific. I personally would not want champagne flutes unless it was a set of at least 4, and even then it’s the kind of thing I wouldn’t want to own when I’m still in the age range where my guests might break things.
For my office secret Santa, we have the opportunity to do a wish list for suggestions, but I’m struggling to come up with $30 ideas that I would actually use but aren’t awkward in a coworker environment, and aren’t girly since I work with mostly men. Right now I’m asking for nice glass tupperware and a santoku knife.

Riedel stemless wine glasses from Target.
Inexpensive wireless speaker.
Better quality corkscrew.
Charging station or leather pen/pencil holder for your desk.
Tervis or RTIC cup.
All things I would like to get in Secret Santa . . .

Hey law & government types — I just discovered the National Archives has an online store, 30% off today, with all sorts of oddities & DC-related things. There are leather bracelets with Hamilton quotes, including “the first duty of society is justice.” Nice.

This is cool! Thanks for sharing!

Unrelated. I’m not in a good place today. Had in-laws and my parents over for a week and I’m simultaneously exhausted/relieved they left but also super homesick (moved across the country 1.5 years ago and this was their first trip to visit). Super fed up with work for very legitimate reasons I won’t get into now. I just want to hide under a blanket with leftovers (even though I’m feeling incredibly fat right now) and my dogs.

Vent: I am irrationally angry at a friend for bailing on me last minute. She didn’t tell me she was going to bail until I asked her when we should meet up to carpool to the event. Based on her excuse, we could still have done the event, just in a different way. I’m guessing the given excuse was code for, I’m going to get drunk and don’t want to be bothered to join you as I would rather get drunk. Like, just be honest ahead of time about not wanting to go, instead of waiting until I ask about logistics a day before. It was something we both paid to do.
In the grand scheme of things it’s really NBD, but days later, I am still fuming. The holidays put me in a funk and I realize this is contributing, so I am just laying low until I simmer down. I don’t want to talk about it to our mutual friends because it seems petty and insignificant, so I am venting here.
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

I hear you. Being on the receiving end of this type of behavior drives me batty.

I have actually lost friends over this. If you need to cancel plans, then do it as soon as you know you need to cancel so I can make alternative plans. If I’m asking about arrangements and then you cancel, I take that as disinterest in hanging out with me and maintaining a relationship and having no respect for my time.
