One great gift idea if you're on the hunt are these water-resistant UGG slippers. Sure, they're a bit fug — but if you know a woman whose dog needs a quick early morning walk, or who has to take the trash and recycling outside for pickup, these could be a lifesaver. They were originally $95, but in the big Nordstrom sale they come down to $55. The women's version (pictured) comes in three colors. Are there any wineries within driving distance of NYC (I’m actually in Stamford) that would be open on a Saturday in December? Preferably something with great views?
My sister is coming to visit and I was thinking about doing that for an activity. Also any activity suggestions in NYC or surrounding area? I feel like we’ve done a lot of the typical NYC stuff so looking for something off the beaten path a little. And outside of NYC, I’m not sure what to do on a December weekend. Everything I would normally do requires nice weather. Any suggestions are helpful!
Anonymous
You could do Lambertville, NJ or New Hope, PA as a day trip. Not sure about wineries in the immediate area, but the Finger Lakes are about 4.5 hours away. That is a fun overnight trip.
CHJ
What about the North Fork of Long Island? I’m not sure which wineries will be open, but that is a fun area in general. Their ice wines are decent.
Anonymous
Since you’re in Stamford, you could take the ferry from Bridgeport to easily get to the North Fork
Jdubs
Tons of wineries in Connecticut! Search for the CT Wine trail. Most of them north of Stamford but not too far away.
APC
Love the finger lakes idea if you’re willing to spend a night! Long Island also has wineries out in Suffolk for about a 1-2 hour drive outside of NYC.
anon a mouse
In the same vein, there are some decent distilleries in the general area. Tuthiltown and Hillrock are two, but there are several near-ish.
anon
Storm King if the weather’s decent, Dia Beacon if it’s not. Combine with a cocktail, some antiquing, and farm-to-table dinner.

+1. Also the Beacon farmer’s market is open year-round on Sundays until 3pm and is a nice market to poke around.

Oahu recommendations
My fiancé and I will be traveling to Oahu for his work in a couple of weeks. He will be occupied during the day, so I will be sightseeing on my own. We’ll be based in Waikiki, and we’ll most likely meet up for dinner together. Any recommendations for solo excursions and/or places to eat? Thanks!

Solution found!
I asked a couple of weeks ago about what to do with rings at the gym for things like weights, medicine ball, etc. so as to not damage them or hurt myself and got a lot of good suggestions. I wanted to report back that I figured out the solution for me — a “wrist wallet” (found on amaz0n)! I got one that has the same terrycloth material as a sweat band so it’s nice to dab my forehead with it, too. It is big enough for a credit card, so if you don’t have a running belt (I use that for outdoor long runs for my phone, keys, ID), or do but prefer something smaller for the gym, this was a good compromise for me.
Meredith Grey
thanks for the FU! I’m going to check it out…

It took me a solid five minutes to figure out that “FU” in this context stands for “follow up.” I thought you were offended by what seemed like a very innocuous post!

Has anyone had luck shopping for work clothes on Amazon Prime? I love Amazon Prime for so many things, but feel like I haven’t discovered any brands of women’s work clothing I could rely on.
Also, Kat recently featured a dress from Land’s End like this one – http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-elbow-sleeve-ponte-sheath-dress/id_302543?sku_0=::1S1
I ordered 4 in various colors and patterns and I love them. They’re very figure flattering and nicely constructed.

I got this dress too and I love it. I have a bit of a belly, but this dress didn’t accentuate it. Kat also recommended this dress and I bought it and also LOVE IT. It’s not too clingy and sort of pulls me together. I got in in red which is just gorgeous and perfect for the holidays. http://www.landsend.com/products/womens-34-sleeve-knit-surplice-dress/id_305436?sku_0=::N43

I’m not in a good place today. Had in-laws and my parents over for a week and I’m simultaneously exhausted/relieved they left but also super homesick (moved across the country 1.5 years ago and this was their first trip to visit). Super fed up with work for very legitimate reasons I won’t get into now. I just want to hide under a blanket with leftovers (even though I’m feeling incredibly fat right now) and my dogs. anyone else in a funk?
CountC
I’m sorry! I am in a funk too, but I don’t really have a good reason to be in one. That said, couch, blanket, leftovers, dog, and cats sounds great to me.
I say do it. Hugs.
Poor timing
I get that funk. I keep telling myself that it’s being exacerbated by the stomach bug that has been torturing me, but the other part is: do I really want a job that has me answering emails while curled in the fetal position on my bathroom floor? The time off was so… freeing. For me, the taste of ‘what might have been’ was hard.
Hugs as well. I vote canine love and leftovers. I might add in a little exercise- walk the puppies and then curl up on the couch with Gilmore Girls.
Place to reflect in DC?
I had a miscarriage this past spring and my due date is this week. I’d like to spend some time alone reflecting after work, but can’t come up with a good place to do this in downtown dc. I am religious, but it seems that most churches are closed after work. I’d really appreciate any Suggestions!
CountC
I don’t have any suggestions, but I am sending you internet hugs.
Katie
Not downtown, but I like taking a day to hike around Great Falls when I feel overwhelmed. For me, getting out of the city and being around nature is very therapeutic. Perhaps some parts of Rock Creek Park may be more easily accessible for you? Or a long walk down Haines Point?
The Cathedral of St. Matthew (near Dupont/Farragut North) is open until 6:30pm during the week, though that may not be late enough for you. Is it possible for you to leave the office a bit early to do some self-care?
I, too, am sending you internet hugs.

I’m sorry for your loss. St. Matthew’s on Rhode Island Ave NW has a 5:30 mass, and the cathedral is open until 6:30.

+1 to St. Matthews. I’ve spent some time crying and reflecting in there and its lovely.
I’m sorry for your loss.
I would also consider an option like the National Portrait Gallery. It’s a place to be surrounded by beauty and people, but still be alone with your thoughts.

I’m sorry for your loss. May you find comfort. The National Basilica at Catholic University is not downtown, but it’s on a Metro stop (Brookland). Would this be helpful?
The Washington National Cathedral has services at 5:30 pm on “most weekdays” (service lasts approx. 45 minutes– see https (colon, slash slash) cathedral.org (slash) worship (slash) weekly-services (slash)
+1 re suggestion that you leave work early if possible
Is your regular church open on weekday evenings? Or could you arrange to have some solitude at home to, say, light a candle and meditate?
I hope you find comfort.
Emmy See
Not downtown but at Brookland/CUA metro, there’s the Basilica/National Shrine (http://www.nationalshrine.com), which is open until 6pm and has 5:15 Mass (in the lower church, I think, so you could still sit or wander in the main church upstairs, which has umpteen different Marian shrines. They also have a Mary garden outside, if it’s not too cold and if Madonna and Child images aren’t too painful for you.
At the same metro stop is CUA, which has chapels open late because college students. They have a list here: http://ministry.cua.edu/liturgy/sacredspaces.cfm including the 24-hour chapel (but I don’t know if they give the door code to non-students). They also have Adoration at 9pm on Wednesdays (praise & worship) and Thursdays (solemn), and Mass every weekday at 10pm, if that would help you.
I’m so sorry for your loss, and I’ll light a candle for you.
Wedding stuff (sorry)
Please tell me if I need to apologize. Fiance and I recently sent out our save the dates. As fiance putting the save the dates in the mail, he noticed a typo in one of the addresses. He re-addressed the envelope and sent it out 2 days after the original batch.
Apparently this is a huge issue for the recipients of the belated save the date. One half of the couple contacted fiance to ask if they were invited and fiance told them what happened. Their card was already in the mail by that time but I guess they didn’t get it right away due to the holiday. Now the other half of the couple is telling our mutual friends that they’re only invited because they complained, which isn’t true at all. I don’t know if I should reach out and apologize? Or should I just ignore it and pretend I haven’t heard about it? I feel badly that this couple thought they were excluded, that wasn’t our intention.
Anonymous
No they are being major drama queens. Ignore them.
EB0220
Wow, these people are crazy. You do not have to apologize.
Nessie
I don’t think you need to apologize. That sounds like a ridiculous over reaction to receiving a save-the-date a couple of days after everyone else.
Cat
Wow. Yeah, no need to apologize whatsoever. Tell them to look at the date it was postmarked and to STFU.
Anon2
Your fiancé has already explained the situation. There is nothing you need to do.
Anonymous
What…..!?
People are psychotic.
Your friends/family or his?
Just tell the truth. Nothing more. Nothing less.
Anonymous
I agree they are being drama queens but I also feel like it couldn’t hurt to say something like “I’m sorry, it was never our intention to exclude you. There was a typo in the address and we delayed your invite to fix it.” Their behavior is not justified but they are probably doing it because they are hurt and if you can say something that would potentially fix that hurt, I don’t see a downside. Definitely don’t keep apologizing though. If you make it clear your intent was not to hurt them and they can’t accept that fact, you should just move on and ignore them.
Anon
Agree. Not your fault but assume they were hurt and wondering why they didn’t get the invite when your other friends did. Doesnt mean they should act badly now but, whatever. A quick call and have something else in mind to change the subject to something new, maybe ask a question, end on a happy note, drama is gone.
APC
I wouldn’t reach out but the next time I saw them I’d probably say something like “I heard your save the date was late! Ugh the mail! I heard a bunch of my [cousins/college friends/insert random group here] had the same problem!”. It’s passive but gets the point across that they need to chill.
OP
I might go with this. “We had a printing error on a bunch of our save the dates, ugh so annoying, just glad it’s fixed now before we order the invites! You got yours OK, didn’t you?”
Poor timing
That sounds great! You tell them how they’re going to respond (positively).
Senior Attorney
See, this is where I blame the mutual friends for blabbing to you about it. The mutual friends should have told them “you all need to chill” rather than running to you with the gossip.
That said, I guess it couldn’t hurt to reach out and explain why their card was late. Once.
LAnon
Yeah, I agree with this. Sounds like a lot of people who are eager to cause drama and stir the pot. If someone came to me to complain about this, I would say, “Oh, you never know, maybe it just got delayed in the mail.” Ignore the whole thing, including the people who are reporting back to you on who said what.
OP
Thanks, everyone. The blabbing is my issue – I feel badly they were hurt. I don’t want them to feel hurt. Sometimes “sorry” really means “I’m sorry I unintentionally hurt your feelings,” not “I actually did something wrong and need to apologize.”
But neither half of the couple has said something directly TO ME. So I worry that me reaching out to them is just going to add fuel to the fire? Like they’re going to wonder how it got back to me that they’re upset, and then they’ll be upset at other friends and it’ll just keep the drama alive? Maybe I’m overthinking it.
Opal
Seriously. Just let it go. Don’t validate their crazy. There are going to be so many opinions during your wedding planning process from friends and family. You need to start deciding now which are worth your time and mental energy.
Senior Attorney
That’s a good point. Just let it go. Don’t stir the pot any more.
Anonymous
That’s insane. If they are good friends, I would say apologize, but on the other hand, who wants insane friends?
Anon
Apologize for what? The initial typo? They are crazy. Even if you’d mailed everything on the exact same day, theirs still could have arrived late due to the USPS mysteries.
I am sorry you have shitty friends.
lawsuited
These people are being insane. You don’t need to apologize. In fact, maybe they’ll be so offended they won’t want to be friends with you anymore and you can save yourself a whole lot of crazy.
Emmy See
They’re being nutso, but I don’t think it would hurt to reach out and say, “Hey, I heard you felt hurt about receiving your save-the-date late, and I wanted to make sure you knew it was just because of a typo on your address. We definitely want you to come!” They’re acting like loons but sometimes it helps to be nice to loons.

Ignore it. They are acting like spoiled children.

Another wedding question: I have three weddings this upcoming year and am a bridesmaid or maid of honor in all three. One is on a Saturday, but is a long way away so I have to take off Friday at the very least to get to the rehearsal dinner and will probably take two days off so I don’t kill myself traveling. NBD for that, however the other two are on weekdays. One is on a Thursday which requires 3 days off (rehearsal dinner day, wedding day, day after), and the third is tentatively scheduled for a Tuesday also requiring three days off. Is it just me, or is this just extremely rude to everyone concerned. I get that it saves a couple of thousand on the venue, but that means that every single person coming to the wedding will have to take at least on day off of work, realistically probably two if they are coming from out of town. One of the weekday weddings is a noon wedding! So even in town people have to take off. Add in the bridal parties that attendance is required at, and I am spending all of my vacation to be in people’s weddings. Is this just how things are now? I am finding these weekday weddings absurd. If you can’t afford having a weekend wedding then don’t invite 200 people to your wedding.
BabyAssociate
Yes, I agree that this is exceedingly rude.
Anonymous
Woman up! “No, I can’t go to your bridal shower because I’m already taking time off for your noon on Tuesday wedding.” “No, I can’t go to your bach party because I’m already taking time off for your wedding.” “No, I can’t make your rehearsal dinner, because I don’t have enough vacation time.”

CMT

ANon
“An invitation is not a summons.” I love this. Couldn’t have said it better myself.
Anonymous
Attendance at bridal parties is not required. Neither is attendance at the rehearsal dinner. Take one day off for the wedding and fly in the night before. I agree weekday weddings are a little thoughtless but acting like you are obligated to do all this stuff is crazy. You can decline an invitation. You can decline being in a wedding party. You can participate but skip all the surrounding hoopla. I missed my BFF’s wedding shower because it was 3,000 miles away and I couldn’t afford two cross-country plane tickets in the space of two months. I participated in the planning, attended via Skype, got her a nice gift and our friendship is just fine.
lawsuited
I don’t think it’s rude to schedule your wedding for a time and date that best suits you and your fiance, but I do think that if you schedule it for a time and date that would be inconvenient to most/all of your guests then you can’t be surprised/hurt/offended when people elect not to go.
If you don’t want to go to a wedding on a Tuesday, you need to decline the invitation (even if you have also been asked to be a bridesmaid). If you don’t want to go to a bridal shower or other event, you need to decline the invitation (even if you have also been asked to be a bridesmaid). I do this from time to time (I still send a card and a gift) and am much happier for it.
A lot of wedding crazy happens because people go along with it, and think that there are certain things they *must* do because it’s a *wedding*. If you don’t want to spend all your vacation days in 2017 going to weekday weddings and related events, you don’t have to.
Anon in NOVA
^This. People have a right to schedule whenever they want to, it’s THEIR day. Invitees also have a right to say no.
As others mentioned, make it clear that you can’t burn all of your leave, that you’re honored to be in the wedding, but can’t make every associated event.
Emmy See
Attendance cannot be required at any satellite event, unless you’re in the military and it’s your CO’s wedding (and even then I’m not sure). You can just say, “I’m sorry I can’t make it to your shower” and send a present if you feel like it. (You are NOT required to send presents for showers you don’t attend.)

I actually ordered these slippers for my Mom last night! But in a lighter brown. They’re delayed shipping until just a few days before Christmas, but I’m sure they’ll be worth the wait. I asked my husband for an Ugg robe last year, and it is my most treasured thing on cold mornings and evenings. I’m not the type to own Ugg boots, but their around-the-house wear is fantastically warm and cozy.

Yay Kat! I have been lookeing for the perfect gift and this is something I want for myself, Rosa, Dad and the Kid’s! I love UGGS but never thought of slipper’s before, but dad has been complaining about cold feet, so this will be great! Yay Kat!
Does anyone in the HIVE know where I can order 7 or 8 pair’s and get a QUANTITY discount on UGGS? I figure that if I am spendeing close to $1000 on UGGS that I should get a QUANTITY DISCOUNT? Has anyone heard of this? I may go to the UGGS store on Madison and 58th and Ask myself, but if I can get it WITHOUT paying tax by ordering on the web, that would also be good.

Credit Karma
I just received an email from Credit Karma welcoming me for signing up. I did not sign up. Then I got a second email saying that because it only allows you to have one account the “new account” I created has been automatically cancelled.

Any recommendations for a place to reline a vintage coat? I have one that’s beautiful but falling apart a little bit. I don’t have any idea where to take it. Can a regular tailor do this kind of thing?
LAnon
Yes, a regular tailor / seamstress should be able to do this, but you will likely have to provide the fabric yourself. I would go to a fabric store (a real one, like Mood, not Jo-Ann which mostly has craft fabric) and pick out something fun! The staff there could probably also help give recommendations on who could do the work.

Unless you’re familiar with sewing and types of fabrics, I would recommend you get some input from your tailor as to the type of fabric because you go buy something

Second the going to a “real” fabric store. I would try to see if there is a boutique-style one in DC (assume that’s where you are). You’re looking for something small, independent, and not a quilting shop.

Midi skirts
How long are midi skirts/dresses on you? I’m tall (5’10”) with disproportionately long legs and they are just at the bottom of my knees. I love it as I don’t like my knees (and it’s so much better than so-called “knee length” skirts which are only mid-thigh on me), but it got me wondering what they are intended to be and what length other people where them at. I think if they were truly mid-calf, they’d look a but frumpy on me but maybe that’s just me?
Cat
I’m 5’4 with short legs and they hit me at mid to low calf. I therefore leave them in the store where they belong…
Emmy See
I think “midi” is just a really vague term. I’ve seen “midi skirts” that are just-past-the-knee (on the model) and “midi skirts” that are longer than tea-length. Anything between the knees and the ankles counts, as far as I can tell.
But I agree that mid-calf skirts look frumpy. It’s partly that they obscure the shape of your calf so weirdly, and partly that it’s such a 1930s look.
