Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. OK. I keep checking back to see if this highly, highly rated sweater dress is available in black, because a hot pink sweater dress is a bit much even for me — but it is not. (UPDATE: Just this morning it's available in gray! Huzzah!) But then I saw the picture with the jean jacket and thought, you know, it could be cute with a blazer. In the reviews, people really seem to love this dress — it holds its form, it's soft, it's flattering, it isn't boxy like other sweater dresses… and on and on. All this, and it's only $98, and machine washable. Nice. It's available in sizes XS-XL. I'd probably get the gray now that I see that that's available, but if the pink is calling you… Eliza J Cable Knit Sweater Dress Here's a plus-size option. Seen a great piece you'd like to recommend? I can’t do sweater dresses for work – I feel like they just stretch too much and the sleeves are always too long (even a smidge too long for the model!) and they look too cozy for work.
NYNY
Agree. This is a weekend dress, not a work dress. Also, I don’t see how looking good w/jean jacket = looking good with blazer. Maybe it’s just me, but it’s hard to make a blazer & dress play nice together!
Anonona
What? I think blazer + dress is pretty easy, (much easier to make look put-together than a cardigan) and I’m not generally that slick with fashion. I think the key is a short-ish, fitted blazer.
Anonymous
What if you pretend it is St. John?
[I really want to like St. John. After maternity clothes, what I wouldn’t give for stretchy work clothes. I am not sure I could pull it off. And it’s expensive. But this is $98! If I could pretend it is St. John, I would pull the trigger and go.]
And I need cozy for work. It is freezing in my office. I have a fleece on over my work outfit, so I’m not sure what level of formality that is. My last sweater dress attempt was a bust (the waist was not where I was sure the waist should be) and I’d like some weekend clothes that aren’t athletic wear.
For work, does anyone have any footwear sugestions (ropers? flat boots that have a taller shaft?)? And layering suggestions that aren’t a jeans jacket?
Anonymous
Footwear suggestions for *weekend*.
AIMS
I would wear this in gray or another sedate color with chunky-ish heels for work and with brown boots/booties for the weekend. I think a simple black blazer that hits at the waist would look nice with this.
AIMS
I also think a dress like this would look nice with a button down shirt underneath (crisp white or patterned) but that’s a know your office kind of look. I’m in a fairly conservative place but I think it would be okay on a Friday because all the old men I work with just equate collar with work clothes.
Terry
I’m about to pull the trigger on this too but wouldn’t get it if I were mainly concerned about warmth. It’s 90% acrylic which will make it super easy to wash, but definitely won’t be as warm as, say, wool.
tesyaa
Also, I have never had an item made of acrylic which did not eventually pill badly.

I like sweater dresses for Fridays in the fall/winter. I think they’re usually too casual for a normal work day but it’s nice to be cozy but still feel dressed up on a Friday.

Since I missed the discussion of jeans in yesterday afternoon’s comments, just wanted to say that I finally bit the bullet and tried on Paige Skyline Skinny jeans after reading Belle at CapHillStyle rave about them. They are every bit as good as she said! Nice rise, reasonable inseam length(!), and not super-skintight like most skinny jeans. I got a second pair at Nordstrom Rack last week for about $80. Worth every penny. (Also comes in a maternity line, although I know OP was looking postpartum.)
Batgirl
Love these, but after a year, they always get a worn out spot on the thigh (chub rub? still, never happened before and now it’s happened twice with these jeans). So I love them but only pay Nordstrom Rack prices for them.

First world guilt. Ever since I became a mom, I feel more emotional when I read the news and I feel a lot more guilt about all the horrible things happening in the world. Example today: nytimes front page news about the refugee crisis in Europe and people fleeing unstable countries torn apart by war. I feel there is an opportunity here to turn my anxiety into something constructive–be more politically engaged, contribute more to charities… Or maybe just realize that the biggest impact one can have on the world is the happiness we bring to the ones around us, and focus on the help and happiness I can bring to those around me (my friends and family members). How do you guys deal with this?
Anonymous
I really limit my news intake to help with my anxiety. I get the skimm newsletter emailed to me http://www.theskimm.com/, daily. I also think picking 1) local cause (for me its volunteering with new refuges at a place that provides childcare while they get language and job training) and 2) a global cause is a good place to start. Its just like how easily you can spiral when you think about global warming and wastefulness – i pick a new thing to concentrate on every month. Maybe its limiting plastic use or taking shorter showers. One baby step at a time.

I give a lot of money to a specific charity that is working with Syrian mothers and children, both in Syria and in refugee camps. They run periodic campaigns to supply things like food, medical supplies, diapers, shoes, and winter coats. I know I can’t help everyone in the world, but I draw some comfort knowing that I was able to help a small number of women and children in a concrete way.

Some things I do.
International: Each of my children has a “foster sibling”, in that I signed up for a Foster Child through Plan Canada. Part of their allowance goes to that (we have a save 1/3, spend 1/3, give 1/3 rule with allowance).
My kids often pick gifts from the Because I am a Girl campaign for friends birthdays, teacher appreciation etc etc
Kiva, micro loans to small business owners in developing economies.
I chair the parent-teacher association. Our school is a “rich school”, but this gives me the opportunity to help other schools in the community through sharing our fundraising proceeds with them, and also looking out for their interests whenever there are board changes (to transportation, boundaries etc).
Right now, inspired by my oldest child just starting to menstruate, I am looking into organizations that supply menstruation supplies to girls in developing countries. If anyone has some recs on this, I’d love to hear them. I would prefer organizations that are distributing menstrual cups, but would also consider resuable pads etc.
Anonymous
Reusable pads are a thing? I bled myself anemic as a teen and would be sort of horrified at this (less so with deva cup). Pls tell me it comes with lots of bleach.
SuziStockbroker
Reuseable cloth pads are totally a thing. I have used them myself. I, of course, have a washer and dryer though.
There is a small company that is making a kind of spinner that gets most of the water out after washing, for girls in the third world, and then they can just hang to dry.
Anonymous
It’s not that gross. Reusable handkerchiefs are a thing, as are reusable cloth diapers!
Lyssa
I find it incredibly hard to imagine, but remember that women have been menstruating for a lot longer than there have been mass produced paper and plastic products available at every corner store. If you ever wanted to have a little more respect for what your great-grandmothers and such had to deal with. :)
(Former) Clueless Summer
Many women in developing countries use the same rags or pads over and over. Re-usable pads with a way to wash them would be a huge step up in sanitation and ease of use. Think outside your “EW GROSS” bubble.
Mpls
You need bleach for diapers because of the fecal matter concerns.
I imagine the reusable pads get rinsed with water and than washed with soap and water, just like underwear would. Do you bleach your underwear?
Anonymous
I bleach my UW if I bleed on it. It’s not just blood though — it’s that thick clot-like junk that I’m not sure I’d want in the rest of my laundry.
Poop and blood are my big bio-hazard issues. Urine doesn’t scare me.
MSJ
Actually you just spray off the solid matter and wash the rest hot (I use cloth diapers). I’d imagine it’s the same with reusable pads.
roses
This is awesome – sounds like you do a lot to help your community. I would give a friendly work of caution about Kiva, though – they’ve come under criticism in recent years because the high interest rates they charge can often propel loan recipients into further debt and poverty. Here’s a good overview: http://www.ted.com/conversations/288/is_microcredit_a_flawed_idea_t.html.
Not criticizing at all, just wanted to share the info.
SuziStockbroker
Thank you roses, I just skimmed the artcile. Looks like the interest rate varies depending on the Field Partner MFI. I’ll have to look into this some more!
Lobbyist
Please do more research before writing off microcredit. Interest rates are high because it’s expensive to loan small amounts of money to people in extreme poverty — and collect it back every two weeks. That’s why banks don’t do it. Interest rates are also higher with organizations that loan in rural areas as opposed to cities. Sure, its not the be all and end all to everything, but there is substantial research (and I’ve seen great work done by one small micro finance institution, the Adelante Foundation of Honduras) that it can and does help people work their way out of poverty.

I just heard about this organization on NPR recently and it seems like they’re doing good things for menstruating girls in third world countries.

I struggle with it more now that I’m a mother, too. The unfairness of life really gets me — why do I have two babies to put to sleep tonight and some other mother now has none? why will my boys (most likely) never have a day when they don’t have all they want to eat while another mother will watch her children starve? why do my boys have access to the best medicine in the world while other mothers can’t get even simple antibiotics for their children? My MIL has started volunteering at a local teen shelter that has a facility for pregnant teens and teen mothers. The shelter is only a few miles from our house and so we’re starting to focus on it as sort of our family charity — MIL will volunteer there, donate money and items, and crochet blankets and clothes to donate; I will knit items to donate; and my husband and I will donate money and outgrown baby items. I like concentrating our efforts because we might make a real impact, and I like the fact that it’s in our community.
Senior Attorney
I sponsor a college student in Cambodia and am also on the board of an organization that provides water wells in rural Cambodia. I also donate my time and money to local causes, primarily through my local Rotary Club. You can’t save the whole world, but I do think you have a responsibility to do omething beyond spreading good cheer to your equally-fortunate family and friends.
Carrie...
Lots of good advice on this thread.
I try to stay educated, and donate responsibly, and live frugally.
And I also try to keep everything in perspective. Do you ever stop for a second, and think how far the world has come in the last 50 years? 100 years? 500 years? No matter how bad you think our current time is, stop for a second…. and think how much change has occurred, with much for the better. And think how fast change is occurring even now.
And when my anxiety is high, I turn off my favorite NPR radio station. Just for awhile….

Life is unfair is the most valuable piece of wisdom that I learnt in my life. That doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t fight for fairness, but unfairness is a fact of life. I do my bit to make this world a bit better. However, I stop myself from feeling horrible that I am not doing enough and remind myself that charity is a choice and life is inherently unfair.
Things that I do are:
I try to live a minimalist life. I just don’t buy much stuff. I use fuel efficient vehicle, not using plastic or too much paper, smaller house, try my best not to waste food etc. This is to leave a smaller footprint.
I work for a company whose work I believe increases the quality of life for all people around the world. For example I believe the technology which helps accurate weather forecasting, scientific research on human genome or other projects which help to find cure for diseases is of more importance than the technology that is needed for social media. So, I choose to work for the companies where I see making an impact even when it means I am not earning as much as I could.
I participate in all the charity drives in my company which kind of run throughout the year. Last one was school supplies collection for a poor school district.
I donate a small percentage of my earnings to causes I believe in (like paying for a very poor child’s education etc). I want to increase this though.
I have many many plans for future and I truly hope I can do execute them.

How much does a bathroom renovation cost? And how long does it take? We have one very small bathroom that I would like to have completely gut renovated (incl new tub) in the next year or two. But it’s our only bathroom and we have a baby and a cat so the logistics seem overwhelming. I assume we’d have to stay elsewhere at least for a day or two? I’d like to start saving for this now but I’m not sure what the goal amount should be. We have somewhat high end tastes but it’s a small space. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
Diana Barry
Where are you located? The costs can vary a lot based on labor cost.
If you want it to take as little time as possible, you will need to have all the materials ordered and ON SITE before the demo begins and then make sure your contractor knows that you need the toilet to be replaced ASAP. Also you will not be able to change any dimensions of the room, in case you were thinking of knocking down/moving walls.
YMMV, but the quickest bathroom reno that I have done took 2 months. We had to knock down and move walls, which took longer, and we have several bathrooms so were not in a rush.
mascot
I’d assume a couple of weeks depending on how much work needs doing. Are you keeping all of the plumbing/electrical in the same place? Or are you completely moving around the layout? Since it is the only bathroom, I assume you won’t begin work until all permits and supplies are in hand. But you still are going to have down time waiting for tile to set, paint to dry, etc.
Contractor
I suggest that you start talking with contractors and pricing out materials. It can really vary hugely so people on the internet would not be able to give you a good idea.
Also, I would anticipate that you could be without a bathroom and/or shower for more than a day or two.
Anon
I recently did a full reno of our small bathroom (also our only bathroom). It took under three weeks, but based on what I’ve heard from others that is very fast. After the first day or two they can put your toilet back in at night, but you won’t have a shower for most of the time. We didn’t stay in our house while the work was being done and our contractor told us that helped them move more quickly.
New tile please
OP here-
Wow. 3 weeks is fast? We planned to keep everything in the same place, just replace the tile, tub, toilet, vanity and extras. I didn’t think it would take that long. Really should have done this before baby. Sigh.
We are in NYC (but an outer borough) if anyone has any ideas about prices.
Walnut
My experience is that there are companies who focus on extremely fast renovations, but it comes with a price tag. The local franchise in my area is called 3 day bath or something like that. Their products are not high end and you choose from their very specific selection.
By contrast, my last bathroom renovation took five months from demo to final completion. It was frustrating, annoying and expensive.
(former) preg 3L
Go to Home Depot and ask how long it would take! They can probably recommend someone or at least give you an idea of labor costs, as well as price out materials.
anon
I did a reno in Brooklyn a couple years ago. I did not replace my tub or floor, but retiled, new sink & medicine cabinet, removal of built-in hamper (so, some drywall work), painting, and reglazing of tub. It cost… $2000 or $3000. I used my super, so that saved some money. I kept the toilet, so that was always available. The sink was replaced in one day, so that way pretty much always available. There were several multi-day periods when I could not use the tub or shower (tiling, reglazing, etc). I stayed at home the whole time, although I sometimes bathed at a friend’s.
The moral of my story is that if you can live with your current tub, you reno will take significantly less time and money. A tub alone is going to cost $1000, plus labor and the cost of a new floor. I spent about $500 for someone to come in and doing a high-quality reglazing of my enameled tub. (Can’t say how it held up for sure, because I moved after six months, but even doing that every 5 years is going to be cheaper & easier than replacing it).
anon from 12:07
I must only be remembering the cost of my supplies, because adding them up in my head puts them at about $2000. And I believe supplies were a little less than half the reno, so it must have been between 4k & 4.5.
Gail the Goldfish
There was an article I read somewhere (NY TImes?) about someone in a 1-bathroom apartment in NYC living with a bathroom renovation. I think their solution was get a gym membership at a gym near their apartment with a shower so they could shower there. It’s not a great solution, granted, but it’s a possibility.
Senior Attorney
Also when I’ve been without water for 24 hours, I’ve gotten a guest pass at a gym a couple of blocks away. It costs like $10 and super worth it.
Snickety
I’ve had two bathrooms done and they were about $15K each (budget, not high-end, Midwest). It really depends on what needs to be done, like how much plumbing, electrical work, tiling etc. My contractor was really good about scheduling the work to minimize the down time, but for example when I had a full tiled shower installed it was a few days before we could shower in that bathroom. Get multiple bids from contractors and talk to them about how long the bathroom will be out of commission.
Woods-comma-Elle
My SO had his done in two weeks while he was on vacation, but that was only just finished in that time and he was not there at all so the guy was able to work continuously every day. That cost around $8-10k (it is small as well. And yes, 2 weeks was fast, apparently.
Meg Murry
If you chose to go on vacation while work is going on though, you MUST stay accessible by phone in case something goes wrong and the contractor needs your approval for a change – for instance, finding out that the floorboards are damaged or the wiring is insufficient or in fact there is no insulation behind the shower wall are all not uncommon occurrences – and the contractor usually needs your approval to fix it since that’s beyond the original scope of the project.
A bathroom reno is not a simple project – it’s probably second behind kitchen reno in terms of amount of work and time it will take.
Diana Barry
+1. My bathroom renos cost 20-35K each.
Calico
I’d second this and add you should have someone local to check in for quality control. A friend went on vacation while the contractors worked and since she wasn’t there, they met every problem that arose with the cheapest possible solution. It ruined the overall quality of her reno.
Woods-comma-Elle
Yes, fully agree and my SO did have his parents checking in on the work regularly while he was away.
a.k.
We did a “rip and replace” of our only full bath and it took 3 weeks. There was about a 2-day delay because one of the fixtures didn’t fit, but we had everything else on site and ready to go when the project started. We were fortunate that friends were out of town for half that, so we were able to go shower at their place.
a.k.
Also, I’d like to piggyback on this and ask: Has anyone added a bathroom to a side of the house where there is NO accessible plumbing, and if so, how expensive/arduous was it? I am desperate for another bathroom but the house layout is going to make it challenging. (DC area.)
Walnut
We’re looking at doing two of these (potentially) and are anticipating mega dollars to get it done. I’d love to hear from others as well.
LC
We just finished a bathroom reno in the SF Bay Area. It cost us about 40K, all in. And honestly, that was on the low end of the quotes that we got. (We didn’t blow out any walls or move any plumbing, which would have made the cost even higher.) It took about 8 weeks, though it wasn’t our only bathroom so we didn’t have any time constraints.
KateMiddletown
Look @ Apartment Therapy dot com. They have great reno diaries, and even if you’re not in a rental they detail the timeline and steps.
New tile please
OP here –
Thanks for all the responses and keep them coming. I’m so glad I asked! I was severely underestimating both the time and money costs of this project. Looks like we’re just going to live with out current bathroom forever, lol :)
Moonstone
That’s what I ended up doing. Bought an awesome shower curtain, painted the medicine cabinet and called it a day.
(former) preg 3L
In law school, our super allowed us to replace the medicine cabinet. We just went to Home Depot and picked out a new one. Made a HUGE difference in the bathroom, took about 3 hours (to go to home depot, pick one, bring it home, and install it), and only cost like $100.
Anonona
There’s also a lot of space in between gut renovation and live with what you have (replacing vanity, putting down peel and stick vinyl flooring, paint, tub refinishing). We did this when we put our house on the market and it only took maybe a week?
Jitters
I’m moving ~*~tomorrow~*~!! Just across town, but I’m moving out of a group house of four women into a 1BR with my boyfriend of 3 years. I can’t wait for all the food in the fridge to be ours, to never come home to other peoples’ dirty dishes in the sink, and to have a bit more privacy. We’re planning to get a cat in a couple months and I can’t wait for that either! BF moved in with me in the group house a couple months ago, which has been fun, but this will be a much-needed upgrade.
Wish me luck on the logistical aspects of this weekend!

Same here — been long distance with fiance for three years, together for six, finally moving in together this weekend, looking forward to adopting a cat in September! Seriously, my bf moved into my place and I think I’m doing all the cleaning. I think he still feels a bit like a guest and is reluctant to, for example, use the vacuum, which is originally mine, without asking first. I understand where he’s coming from since it’s a reflection of the legal reality that I own the place and he does not. Honestly, I’m struggling on how to approach this with him.

first world solution: hire a cleaning service to come 2x a month to avoid having to do the heavy cleaning and then all you have to divide is the tidying. That’s what I ended up doing with then-BF when we were spending too much timing doing (and fighting about) cleaning apt… 9 years/1 wedding/2 kids later, we still largely rely on a service (plus a helpful nanny) to do our heavy-lifting

The best part of cohabitation was when we no longer had two fridge’s full of food or when you swore you had just restocked the milk, but turns out it was at the other place. Having cereal at one place and the milk at the other was just more than I could handle some mornings.
interviewing
So I have a job interview today (yay!) – third round with an owner of the company, startup, will be conducted via Skype. I have already had an onsite where I met the team. I would very much prefer this job, but I am also a candidate for another job that I have my second panel interview scheduled for on Monday.
Should I mention that I am also interviewing at other places? Should I mention that I would much prefer to work with the first company? And, when?
Diana Barry
No, the time to mention it is when you get an offer. If you get an offer for co. #2 before #1 comes back with an offer/rejection, then you should get in touch with #1 and mention that you have another offer and wanted to ask where they are in their process.
mascot
If you are at the 3rd round, they are very interested (congrats!) and clearly you are interested enough to keep talking to them. They probably presume that you are interviewing other places. Unless you have another offer with a deadline and top choice company is still in a holding pattern, I don’t think you need to mention other interviews. Good luck.

Any recommendations for keeping wrap dresses closed at the top? I have a number of these dresses and love them, but they often give me trouble at the neckline because when I sit down, the two layers of fabric kind of fold over, meaning that you can see my cleavage. I hate this!
I know a safety pin would work (or sewing it shut), but does anyone know of any other gadgets or tricks for this wardrobe malfunction?

I’m cleaning out my closet for the fall/winter and have a question. Is a navy/green tartan plaid skirt too costume for anything other than St. Pat’s Day? I have a plaid pencil skirt that fits great and is very professional in every way but this skirt just seems to scream when I wear it. I’d be interested in your thoughts.

I have a wool pencil skirt in the Black Watch pattern that I wear a lot around Christmas. I put a black sweater, black tights, and suede heels with it. I feel very old money east coast/Kate Middleton in the outfit.
