Oooh: Anthropologie's sale section is an extra 40% off — lots of great options if you want to stock up on gifts for friends, family, or, you know, yourself. This pretty little desk accessory is the perfect pop of color near your monitor, and it's a useful little one at that — you can hold post-it notes, business cards, and other small pieces of paper you don't want to lose. (Receipts for reimbursement, anyone?) I love malachite (even faux malachite, such as this), but for some reason I associate it with “gifts for him” — I think this would work as a great little gift for anyone in your life who likes color. (If you know someone who loves this color of green, do check out these gorgeous green office accessories too.) The desk clip was $24, then marked to $12; with the extra 40% off it comes down to $7.99. Nice. Even-Handed Desk Clip There are also some great workwear pieces in the sale — I particularly love that skirt (almost entirely sold out in the other color, red), and would save it for tomorrow morning's workwear report if I thought it would last that long!:Skirt (now $29)/ stripe blazer (now $29) / Bowtie sweater (now $47) / textured blazer (now $49)

Best practices for online dating in NYC and DC?
anon
Don’t know about NYC, as I live in DC but here goes
1. don’t spend too much time conversing with someone on social media, if he/she doesn’t suggest a ftf after a couple rounds of online conversation, move on
2. meet in a public place, preferably away from where you live
3. trust your gut. If something seems “off” about your date, fell free to fake a work emergency/the flu ect and get the h@ll out of there.
Sydney Bristow
Agree with these and I’m in NYC.
I’d add a text to a friend in advance of meeting so they know where you are and a text after to check in.
OKCupid worked great for me 5 years ago. Not sure what the best services are now.
Have at least 1 friend review your profile. Bonus points if you can get a friend of the same gender you are seeking to review it. Several girlfriends reviewed mine and had helpful comments. Then one of their boyfriends looked at it and pointed out that I say “I love” a lot of things and that might freak guys out.
Try to set up dates with a bunch of people so that you aren’t overly invested in 1. If Tuesday night’s coffee date goes bad with someone you really connected with online, it’s easier to let go of if you have a Sunday lunch date on the horizon. Can’t remember who told me that here, but that was awesome advice that I took and found really helpful.
I really really really agree with the advice to meet quickly. Know what your dealbreakers are to weed people out, chat online a couple of times, and if you see the potential to click then try to meet in person.
I know you recently got out of a serious relationship, so if you aren’t really feeling it after getting started, don’t feel bad if you need to take more time off from the dating scene. Good luck!
Sydney Bristow
Oh and I’m not sure if it’s possible, but I got a ton of great advice here on this subject almost exactly 5 years ago. In December and January. Those old posts might be helpful if you can find them.
anon
Not a generic text for check in. If you’re in trouble, a bad guy could grab your phone and text back “yep, ok” when your friend texts you for check in.
Instead, have a theme for each check in time. Maybe cities in Australia for the “I made it safely to meeting place”, kinds of mammals for “I’m presently ok”, Christmas decorations for “I’m heading home now, will call you within 30 minutes when I get home,” things that are blue for “call me and get me out of here; this one’s a dud.”, or movie titles for “I’m scared.”
So a good date’s texts might be Melbourne, Cow, Whale, Candy Cane. Change the themes periodically.
Keep a google doc that someone can access in an emergency that indicates who you are meeting with (with profile links), when, and where. Someone who loves you needs to know where you are. Also use that spreadsheet to record your initial impressions.
Only meet in public places. Say yes to meeting pretty soon after you start communicating and the person seems to meet basic criteria (which for me was a college degree, geographical location, non-extreme politics and religion, within 10 years of my age, and an actual career, YMMV).
When I was online dating, which honestly was a decade ago so what do I know, I would schedule only coffee dates or bar dates, never meal dates, cuz you’re really stuck if it’s a meal. Coffee can always turn into a meal if you like each other. I’d schedule several dates in a row at nearby Starbucks, bother to look cute once, and then meet them in succession, a couple hours apart. Very efficient.
AnonToo
IME: Use pictures only to decide that you aren’t actively unattracted to someone at first. I was not immediately attracted to my now-husband’s pictures but the content of his profile was super intriguing to me and ultimately an excellent indicator of our compatibility. Also, I found it much less stressful when starting online dating to approach it as “getting out there” or “meeting new people” or “this probably won’t work out” rather than “this could be the one”, even though I really was looking for a committed relationship.
Anonymous
Have a “first date” outfit so you never have to think about what to wear on a first date. First dates should be NBD — you’re really just checking to see if someone is real, human, normal, and somewhat similar to what their online profile says. Then, you move forward to finding out if you get along with them at all.
TO Lawyer
I don’t change for first dates. I wear something relatively cute to work (still work appropriate) and plan my dates for after work. I don’t like to waste too much effort on a first date.
Scarlett
That was my rule, too and I swore by it. It kept dating from feeling hard or like a chore. I’d also add, first dates should be drinks (presuming you drink) and not coffee. Nothing flirty about coffee.

Hoping to source some quick gift ideas from the hive! I need a somewhat last-minute gift for my coworker who is a very good friend too. She is on vaca this week with her hubby for her 30th bday, but is back in the office Monday, which is when I’d like to give her said gift. I don’t need to spend much (~$30? possibly more…) and I’d love to find something online that I can get quickly – Amazon Prime would be ideal.
In case anyone is still reading and gets a kick out of helping someone else shop, here’s some more about her: She loves cats, she loves to cook/bake, she is very feminine, but not at all into fashion. She drinks, but she’s about to start trying to get pregnant. She’s super sentimental and sappy and loves Hallmark Christmas movies. He dad died this year very suddenly of super fast-moving cancer, and it actually brought us closer together, as I became her primary sounding board and shoulder since we work together so closely every day. She’s very sweet and very thoughtful and always taking care of me in various ways when she’s not dealing with her own stuff (and even when she is!), so I’d love to come up with something somewhat unique/thoughtful to show her I care, and I’m stumped.
I just spent all my creative energy over the last week or so trying to choose holiday gifts for a zillion relatives while stuff was on sale, so I can’t seem to think of anything now for her! (I’m kicking myself for not getting on this sooner and finding some amazing custom gift of some sort off Etsy or something.) I also have very little free time before Monday to get out to a retail store, so I’d love to order something online today and focus the rest of my energy on writing a really nice message to her in a card to tell her how amazing she is. Any body have any suggestions?? Anyone get any great gifts lately that sound like they might work for her?
Thank you so much in advance to anyone who takes time to read this and respond!

It’s not Amazon but Penzey’s Spices are my go-to for people who love to cook.
AIMS
Cravings cookbook (or Ina Garten’s latest) + some kind of cute cooking item like an apron or measuring cups (Anthopologie is great for this but you could do amazon, too, I’m sure).
Sydney Bristow
My best friend gave me the cutest apron from Kate Spade last year. I don’t typically wear one when I bake, but I do now since it is so adorable. If you have ShopRunner you can get 2 day shipping.
If she likes to bake cupcakes, Sprinkles Cupcake has a new baking book out.
Tech Comm Geek
Definitely agree with Penzey’s Spices – great quality and great people.
Since she enjoys cooking and baking, is there anything she’s mentioned that she wishes she had, or a tool she complains about? What kind of cooking/baking does she do? If she’s got some specialties, there may be handy tools or ingredients.

King Arthur Flour has amazing stuff, but I don’t know what their shipping time is like. The mini scone pan is truly wonderful (non-stick and dishwasher safe, for real), plus a couple boxes of scone mix — easy and a FANTASTIC gift (I received it as a housewarming gift and i love it!).

Another vote for Penzey’s. They have really nice gift boxes. Maybe that and a nice cookbook. My personal favorite is the Moosewood Cooks at Home. Smitten Kitchen’s is a little more special looking (i.e, nice photos).
.
Penzey’s has taken a strong and vocal political position in the past few weeks. So if it’s one that would resonate with her it may make it a more meaningful gift.
Anonymous
OP here. Thanks for all the great suggestions so far! Love this site for quick advice.
I actually just ran some ideas past a fellow coworker who is also a good friend of hers, and it turns out she just got a stack of new cookbooks from her mother in law, so she’s thinking that won’t be as exciting at this point — and I may risk duplicating what she just received.
Penzeys is awesome (and it hadn’t occurred to me, even though I’ve purchased a gift from them in the past) – but given the short timeframe and my reluctance to pay extra for fast shipping, I think I may actually do a Penzeys gift box for her for Christmas instead.
So I’m thinking I might try to figure out a cat-themed kitchen-y item or two from Amazon for her bday. She fully embraces the ‘crazy cat lady’ persona and would be less likely to see that kind of thing as tacky, but I’m still hoping to find something a little bit classy looking (is that possible?)… Her kitchen is mostly black, white and red (I haven’t actually been, I just know because of all the stuff on her wedding registry a year ago), so maybe a pair of black and white salt shakers and a cat apron?

Look for fun cat-themed tea towels. Etsy would be a good source, or a local place like Homegoods or Marshalls. I am of the belief that you can never have enough tea towels.

Vicarious travel shopping: husband and I are choosing between two different all-inclusive resorts in Puerto Vallarta for spring break with our 3 kids (ages 7, 4, and 1.5 at time of travel). He is forever getting frustrated trying to saw things evenly by hand.

What is the deal with this brand? What’s the appeal? Is it the name? I’ve noticed a lot of women my age in a certain demographic wearing his stuff and I can’t figure out if it’s meant to telegraph a certain status or what.
I think it looks nice enough, but people seem especially into the name and I’m curious who the target audience is supposed to be.
Anon in NYC
I don’t get the appeal either.
NOVA
Personally I find it too bulky and masculine for my taste. My friends in college used it as a status symbol, but if I’m paying that much I’d rather get Cartier or Tiffany’s.

Yes. It’s an easily recognized, pricey “designer” brand so all that this connotes. For me, that’s actually a turn off but some people enjoy that sort of thing.

I like that many of the pieces mix metals– silver bangle with gold tips, etc. That way I can interchange it with whatever jewelry I am wearing. I like the variety of stones available in many of the more affordable pieces– I have a small bangle with my child’s birthstone, DH’s birthstone, my mom’s birthstone, etc. that I have collected or received as gifts over the years. I just like how it looks (I think it’s pretty), how it feels (delicate but still substantial, like I’m not going to break it if I bash into my desk or something), the versatility (can wear it with jeans, to the office, to a wedding), the relative affordability (and the few pieces I’ve bought myself have been via ebay, at a great discount). I don’t know what that means about the target market, though.
nutella
My mom has quite a bit of David Yurman and it works for her and she mixes them with other jewelry and it looks fabulous. On me it is all too masculine or bulky, just not quite right. I think some of the big bulky rings look a little odd on younger, slender girls and like they are going for the status of it.
That being said, my mom has these and holy smokes they are gorgeous and I borrow them whenever I can: http://www.davidyurman.com/products/women/earrings/starburst-double-drop-earrings-with-diamonds-in-18k-gole09979d88.html?lpos=IS-1
Anon
I have the non-dangly stud version of those (basically just the top half) and I wear them all the time. They go with everything and they are so pretty! I bought them as a happy birthday to me present for an age ending in zero. :)
Ms B
+1. Durable, but not too chunky to wear while typing. Nice enough to wear to court, but not so nice that it would put a judge off (one judge and I have a couple of the same bracelets and make jokes about being the Wonder Twins). Fancy enough to compete with the SAH wives of the hub’s law partners, but not so fancy that I can’t wear them everyday.
Ebay has been a good source for me, but I have gotten some EXCELLENT prices at the David Yurman outlet in Las Vegas. Their pricing runs 30% off the silver and most mixed metal pieces, 40% off the gold, and 50% off of clearance. I get coupons for an additional 20% off four or five times a year (Valentine’s, Mother’s Day, one or two summer holidays, and either BF or December 26). I keep a list of pieces I want and send them to my salesperson in Vegas; if they have them in stock or available at that point, I can hear the pricing and buy. Plus they have an excellent bench jeweler out there that can size the rings, do repairs, etc. that is far superior to the one that my local store uses.

I’ve never seen anything DY that I really liked.
COtoNY
Thank you! I thought I was the only one…
June
I wear my one DY cuff daily because it takes wear well and doesn’t require polishing like silver and is nice as an everyday casual piece. Generally, though, I find the DY look a little too sporty for my taste. But I love my one piece for its sturdy appeal- it is like the basic jeans or casual black tshirt dress of jewelry.
June
I should add that I don’t like visible logos or obvious status symbols but that I thought the DY was simple and ubiquitous enough to not be making a statement.
housecounsel
I like that it isn’t delicate. I like the thick cable and mixed metals.
anonypotamus
I have one DY bracelet that I wear daily. It is the only bracelet I’ve found that doesn’t bother me at work (typing a lot + tiny wrists) and I like that it mixes gold and silver tones. I was also gifted a long necklace similar in style to this http://www.davidyurman.com/products/women/necklaces-and-chains/infinity-station-chain-necklace-n09396-ss.html that I like because I can adjust the length and it pairs perfectly with suits/dresses and doesn’t look obviously DY (imo).
Anon
I don’t have a lot of David Yurman. Just the earrings I spoke about in response to Nutella’s post above. But I really like some of the Yurman cuffs and rings. I’m not a dainty jewelry gal. I don’t like thin little necklaces that sit at the base of the throat or tiny little rings or chain bracelets. In my world it’s go big or go home. Perhaps it’s because I’m tall and big-boned – dainty stuff all looks terrible on me.
My sister has quite a bit of Yurman and wears it all mix and match and it always looks good on her. I think that’s the advantage of sticking primarily to one designer- everything goes together. Her husband buys her something from Yurman for just about every birthday and Christmas so she had amassed quite a collection, and it has made gift giving easy for him.
AEK
I have a DY sterling chain bracelet with gold detail on the clasp and I’ve worn it almost every single day for the last 10 or so years. I love it and not having it on is like forgetting my watch (yes, watch every day person here).
I also have a simply pearl pendant (encircled in silver) that is nice for work. It’s not my favorite but it’s a nice basic piece.
There is definitely some fugly stuff in the line but I think there are also lovely pieces.

Home decor question for anyone who wants to play… I’m trying to decorate a really big blank wall in my open floor plan town house. The couch is up against the wall, and I have a little buffet table on the other side of it. I’m looking for pieces of art to hang above each, but I’m thinking a decorative floor lamp could be a good addition to take up more blank space and feel decorative. I want something interesting to look at with personality, but not over the top either. I originally thought an arc floor lamp could be good because it’ll be big and will take up space, but are they too trendy and wont be “cool” later? I’m a new homeowner and don’t pay attention to details so I don’t know if this is a passing trend or a traditional look. Any thoughts?? TIA!
Clocks
I’ve seen some really interesting clocks – like biga$$ clocks, a few feet in diameter or roughly the size of a large picture frame. I can’t directly link you to any at the moment, but try Wayfair or Pinterest for examples. I think I’m going to get one to take up a blank wall – practical and interesting (interesting by way of color, material and/or showing gears, etc.).
Sydney Bristow
I want one of these so much. They are likely a trend too but I love them.
In my search for a giant clock, I did come across large-ish freestanding clocks that were on top of a tripod. Sort of like a floor lamp with a clock at the top. I thought they were unique and cool.
Meredith Grey
YES! This is on the list for a different wall! Haha Still can’t find one, but I troll Haute Look every day for them.
nutella
Arc floor lamps have been in style since the ’60s so I wouldn’t worry about that. Other ideas – tapestries, vintage quilts, large art like star maps/old maps, gallery wall of lots of photos, stick-on decal (can range from cute to chic), collections of things you like (ukeleles, cameras, clocks, whatever) on shelves, mirrors, a curtain wall, a tall indoor tree on the other side of the table… so many ideas! What do you like?
Anonymous
Picture wall? You can get photos printed to look like canvas paintings and it isn’t terribly expensive. You could print out a bunch in different sizes and put them up to cover the wall. I have a ton of photos printed and put out in frames and on my walls in my house and I love looking at them.
anonymous
I just had this exact issue and ordered a tapestry on Etsy for less than $100 (I was on a budget, not sure if you are) but it allowed me to decorate my whole, huuuuge wall in one go– such a relief. Happy to send you the link to the Etsy shop. Coincidentally, I also have an arc lamp in the same space and it’s great.
Meredith Grey
Yes!! This might be too late, but if you’re reading, would love to see links. Thanks sooo much!

What about wall hangings, like tapestries? I’ve also seen a lot of nice wall hangings from hand-printed/-dyed/-painted fair trade sellers. They tend towards the paisley/elephants aesthetic, so it might not be your cup of tea.
Snick
Look for a big mirror with an interesting frame. It’s a great way to take up wall space. You can create a nice arrangement with some smaller art pieces.
Fishie
This may not cover the whole wall but I had blank wall in a bedroom and bought an art calendar from a museum gift shop, cut out some of the prints and framed and mounted them. Probably was $100 bucks for the whole thing. I also have some arty friends who buy big canvases and paint them themselves – instant modern art!

Cancun is lovely, and is a relatively easy trip from the Midwest (there are non-stops from Chicago). But the beaches are gorgeous, it’s super warm, and there’s a lot of fun non-beach stuff to do.

Also not terribly interested in Tahiti or Bali or something so far flung… it just seems like there is nothing to do but beach…? Ideally we could have some beach time, but if it’s like 70 (so beautiful but not necessarily bikini weather), that’s ok. We want to have things ‘to do’ but not so many that we are exhausted. One thought is basically just going south down Italy, eating and lazily sightseeing along the way and ending up in Sardinia for sun, but I’m not sure it will be warm enough? Any other ideas, maybe Spain? We would like to do South Africa, but May is fall-heading-int0-spring there so I think may not be that warm?
Also out for now is Hawaii because fiance’s sister just had her honeymoon there a couple months ago and is prone to comparing a lot and I just don’t want it to feel like we are ‘one-upping’ their honeymoon. I think that will be maybe an anniversary trip or something before we try for a baby, so it’s always there for another time!

Italy sounds wonderful to me! We honeymooned in Greece (2 days in Athens and then divided our time between the islands of Santorini and Mykonos). It was heavenly and we did go swimming in the Mediterranean (we were there in August) but I’m not sure it would be as warm as you want it May. It looks like the average high in early May is only in the high 60s.
I’m not as enchanted by Spain as some other people are. I’ve been to Barcelona, Madrid, Seville and some of the surrounding towns and I think they’re nice, but I would vote for Italy, Greece or France for a honeymoon along the Mediterranean. I think all three countries are more romantic than Spain.

Oh also maybe look into Croatia? I haven’t been but I’ve heard it’s lovely. My parents are doing a luxury cruise there next May. I’m not sure if you’re into cruises or not, but their cruise looks super nice (and I think it leaves from Venice, so you could do a little bit of Italy too).

We went to Sicily on our honeymoon and it was FABULOUS! We did the south part — Catania, Noto, Ortigia, Siracusa, Mt. Etna, and environs. Great food, beautiful scenery, nice beaches, history, you name it. Big big thumbs up.

Greece. It will be really pleasant.

FWIW: We did our honeymoon in Bali and it was much more than just the beach. We spent a few days in Jimbaran at a beach, and then headed inland to Ubud, where we did a cooking class, bike tour, spa day, etc.

Depending on the time you have, flying into Rome and then traveling down to Sicily is a great trip. You can do whatever kind of activities — museums/culture, hiking, watersports, competitive eating — you want to do on that trip. It might be a bit cool (I’ve only been in mid summer and fall) but worth looking into.
I feel like Portugal does not get enough tourism love. From the day I landed in Lisbon, I was texting people about how gorgeous the city was, how great the food, etc. That continued as I made my way to the Algarve. Again, I was there in June, so I can’t vouch definitively for the weather, but it is worth checking out.
If you want hot, beach weather that time of year, though, you might need to get closer to the equator. Indonesia generally and Bali in particular could fit the bill, and there is a lot to explore there other than solely beach.

This morning on the train I saw a guy wearing GORGEOUS hunter green wool tweed trousers. Any idea where to find something similar in a woman’s cut?
Quilted Down Winter Coat
I’m at least five years late to this trend, but I am finally looking to buy a thigh- or knee-length quilted down (puffer?) jacket. Mid or heavy weight, hood preferred but not required. I love the look in most catalog/web pics, but I did try on an Eddie Bauer version a couple of years back and it looked somewhat shapeless. Do you have one that you love, particularly if you tried on a few others that felt frumpy? Prefer $250 or under.

This will seem odd but Zara! They are so warm that I almost passed out trying them on in September 3 years ago and a lot of them are belted so are a little more formfitting. Mine is quilted down and also has a down hood, so I stay very warm. I think it was around $120 and I keep seeing them year after year, though I haven’t been in a Zara this year to see if they have them. I have a giant parka from jcrew that is so bulky that I actually feel dangerous in it (cannot see periphery or move easily and it is hard to hold a purse) and it gets exhausting trying to put it on. Also because it is giant, air can come up and chill you- I still prefer my Zara puffer!

Here is one of them this year: http://www.zara.com/us/en/woman/outerwear/view-all/long-water-repellent-anorak-c733882p3659501.html
Probably going to buy another color actually. And now that I think of it, mine is 4 years old and still holding up well! Wore it today, in fact! And pretty much every day under 45 for the last 4 winters!

No specific recommendations, but a belted waist makes all the difference. Like an actual built-in belt that you have to cinch or tie after you zip the jacket, that pulls in the waist and gives some shape.
AIMS
I have the JCrew Puffer and although it is ubiquitous, I still like mine because it’s warm and it’s got a defined waist. You can get the Factory ones for under $100 on sale.

North Face has a lot of good choices for down coats. Mine from Land’s End because I need tall sizes and it is surprisingly flattering – you definitely need to size down a lot in that brand, though, like 2 sizes. I tried on a bunch from LL Bean, but they were all very frumpy and shapeless in the middle.

The Lands End Down Commuter parka! It’s quilted on the inside but has a smooth exterior which makes it marginally sleeker looking for work. It has a hood, it has fabric cuffs to keep the cold out, it has a waist clincher to nip your waist in, it has tons of pockets. It’s a great coat. I’ve had mine for 4 years and I love it more every season.

If you had an interview where the person introduced herself by firstname, and you referenced her by firstname during the interview, would you address them by first name in your thank you email, or Ms. Lastname?

If you were asked to call someone “Sue” during the interview, it seems awkwardly formal to call them “Ms. Smith” in a thank you letter.
COtoNY
Thanks. That’s what I was thinking but just wanted to make sure.

If someone says “Hi, I’m Jane” then you can definitely address the thank you letter “Dear Jane.”

I went to the internist today. He agreed that it was time for a referral to the psychiatrist. (Yea for working in the local hospital and knowing all the doctors by first & last name.) We’re trying the lowest dosage possible of Celexa while I get on her schedule. They’re currently booking new patients 10 to 16 weeks out.

If true, explain that you are having suicidal ideation (not plans to hurt yourself but fleeting and intrusive thoughts), you will get seen a lot sooner.

Your insurance might be able to help you get a faster appointment with a different psych, too.

I use this Anthropologie hand figure to hold my rings on a pretty vignette on my dresser. Love the glossy green.

I’d like to buy my husband some long-sleeve polo-style shirts in different colors. He likes a thick cotton, no logos, and no zippers (just a few small buttons at the top). Any recommendations?

Hi all, thanks for your suggestions for show styles for my Birkenstock and blundstone wearing 16 year old daughter. I finally decided I couldn’t surprise her safely so we looked online together. She wants Dansko clogs. The closed back professional line. In brown.
I don’t get teen style right now.
I forgot to mention that she and her friends all wear rainbow flip flops 75% of the year.

Your daughter is really smart. Far better to wear ultra-supportive Danskos (which TONS of students are wearing on my campus) and protect her feet than crappy trendy flats that will destroy them.

This made me laugh out loud- at age 24, this confused me immensely. I would no more have been caught dead in Danskos at age 16 than I would skydive. I don’t get it either. I STILL wouldn’t.

23 checking in here and I totally agree with you. Honestly have never heard of them – I’m getting a leather Crocs vibe?
