Splurge Monday’s Workwear Report: Colorblock Blanket Wrap
Our daily workwear reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices.
Despite the fact that, at this point in my life I've been through (ahem) a lot of springtimes, I was as surprised as anyone by the blast of cold air that swept in on Sunday. Brrr! And to think, I was all set to sing the praises of Jockey slip shorts today. But: this fun colorblocked wrap might just be perfect for this unpredictable weather. Throw it on over a light jacket and shove it in your bag if it turns out to not be that cold — or keep it at the office to save for a surprisingly brisk night. It's $48 at Nordstrom, available in this black/gray/beige version as well as a darker maroon/purple version. This other scarf is a little bit smaller (36 vs 38), but more affordable at the sale price of $28. Halogen® Colorblock Blanket Wrap

Can someone share their house cleaning schedule with me? I’m trying to get a better grip on chores and do something every day instead of letting things get out of control. Also any tips or tricks that make things easier or more efficient?
Im single, no kids so it all falls to me.
For a while I read the Flylady emails and found it useful to build some regular habits, I also like the attitude to do something nice for yourself vs. feeling that you should clean more. Some other aspects of the franchise may not be to everyones taste, though.
Personally, I try to make the bed everyday, and either fold/put away clothes or wipe sink+mirror or the tub or scrub toilet. Then weekly vacuum and laundry. Other tasks based on urgency and available time.
The only Flylady thing that stuck after I got sick of her gender stereotyped self-sacrificing Angel of the Household attitude was the bathroom schedule. Since I’m not sure what you have to do to make a bathroom so filthy it needs to actually be cleaned every day, I clean one thing in the bathroom a day (sink/mirror, toilet, shower), and it stays sparkling. I also try to do laundry every Sunday/Monday, but that’s a holdover from my grandmother’s Wash on Monday, Iron on Tuesday… rhyme.
Everything else gets done in a terrified scramble half an hour before company is coming over.
Re: what you have to do to make a bathroom require daily cleaning: Have a husband and male preschooler. Never understood why bathroom paint needed to be able to be wiped clean. I get it now.
I had a male roommate, and the place still didn’t get gross enough to clean every day. But I think the toddler throws everything out the window (or in the toilet!).
+1 to husband and male preschooler. I wouldn’t say I “clean” the main bathroom every day, but I do take windex and a rag to the mirror, sink, and toilet seat (I swear my cat walks in the wet tub, then jumps on the toilet just to leave footprints) and toilet brush the bowl almost every night. <2 minutes. I let the housecleaner do the real cleaning when she comes every 2 weeks.
Mondays – pay bills, file receipts, shredding (accumulated over a weeks time)
Tuesdays – kitchen and baths, dust living area and bedroom, wash towels
Weekends – laundry, vacuum, change sheets (varies on which day/night it’s done)
Every quarter I dust everything in the house, on the shelves, etc.
I like the general idea behind FlyLady, but I couldn’t stomach the tone long-term. I agree it’s great for habit-building, though. I still stick with making my bed, keeping the sink clean, wiping down the mirror/sink/toilet regularly, and taking care of a clutter “hot spot” before bed every night (almost always the front entryway). It really keeps me from feeling overwhelmed when the highly visible things are taken care of. For laundry, I start a load in the morning before leaving for work, put it in the dryer when I get home, and fold it at night while watching TV. I am terrible at actually putting the laundry away, but at least it’s folded or hanging and not getting too wrinkled.
Pre-kids and housecleaner, I’d cycle through the big chores doing one every evening that I was home for dinner. I had a list (sweep/mop, vacuum, clean bathrooms, dust, change sheets, tidy [room/closet], declutter 1 drawer, etc) and a deal with myself that at least 1 chore would be done right after dinner before I relaxed or went to the gym. It was just getting over that mental hurdle, really. The actual chore didn’t take more than 15-20 minutes since my space was pretty small. My apt was never sparkling all at once unless I was expecting houseguests, but I got all the way through the list at least once every couple weeks.
I have three kids, so its a little different, but I think this can be done with just one person too. Every morning, we make beds and after making breakfast, I wipe down the kitchen counters. After brushing teeth I wipe down bathroom counters. Every evening after dinner, I wipe down kitchen counters again, sweep the kitchen floor/under the table (this probably doesn’t have to be done as often if you don’t drop as many crumbs, haha), then we pick up any random toys/clothes/ clutter from each room. This takes no more than 10 minutes.
On Saturdays, I sweep the whole house and mop and clean the showers and toilets (this takes about an hour). I wipe down the mirrors whenever they need it, usually every other week. I also wash towels and sheets on the weekend. I wash clothes on Sundays and Wednesdays and fold and put away each load as soon as it is dry.
Once a month, I do a bigger clean where I move the couches and sweep and mop underneath and take everything off the counters and clean them. I also vacuum our upstairs (only place we have carpet) every other week, sometimes even longer in between. We don’t allow the kids to take their shoes upstairs, don’t allow food up there and don’t allow the dog up there, so the carpet doesn’t get too dirty.
The Ask a Clean Person podcast, hosted by Jolie Kerr, had an episode where she set out a cleaning schedule. I adapted it to my lifestyle so I don’t remember exactly what she said but it was helpful!
Since we are on the topic of cleaning, what cleaning product do you use to clean bathroom floors and countertops? There are so many all purpose products out there it’s overwhelming.
I clean almost everything in my house with white vinegar+water or a white vinegar+hot water+a little dish soap combo. Non-Toxic, cheap, effective, and easy.
I also sometimes use Mrs. Meyer’s cleaning spray, but it’s just because I like the smell.
Agree on vinegar for most things, but make sure you don’t use it on stone counters because it’s acidic. I use dish soap on granite counters and rinse well.
Last Week of Month – Pay Bills
First Week of Month – Schedule Cleaning Person
Daily – Make Bed
a few times a week or as needed – scoop cat litter box (empty when needed)
Every day (or less as needed) – wipe kitchen counters
A few times a month (mostly weekends, but sometimes week days) – laundry, which includes sorting, washing, hanging, folding and putting away. I have a dedicated laundry space in the basement, so I’m always in the middle of some stage of laundry in there. It’s never completely done. I do my clothes and household stuff (towels, sheets, dog blankets). Sometime I take care of my husband’s clothes and sometimes he does his own. He irons his clothes or the cleaning person does. I mostly don’t buy clothes that need ironed, and the few that I have are ironed by the cleaning person.
1/month or less – Husband takes stuff to dry cleaners and picks it up.
1-2 times per day or as needed – load dishwasher (husband empties it; we stack dirty dishes in sink and I load them into dishwasher in morning or evening and run it when it’s full)
Husband does most of the cooking and sort of cleans up the kitchen when he’s done. He empties the garbage and recycling, and takes care most of the of dog-related care and cleaning.
As needed (mostly just when expecting company) – sweep or vacuum floors in kitchen, living room and dining room
As needed – husband empties garbage and recycling
The cleaning person comes once a month and does deep cleaning of the whole house, including things like emptying and scrubbing the cat litter box, cleaning the refrigerator, ironing, etc. and that helps a lot. The rest of the time we do a bit here and there if we spill something or make a mess, but mostly our standards aren’t that high and we’re happy not to have to clean that often.
Some fashion inspiration to start the week: what’s everyone wearing today?
I’ll start:
medium blue herringbone wool blazer (Gap, thrifted)
red silk long sleeved blouse (Ann Taylor, I think)
navy pencil skirt
bare legs (yay!)
grey patent heels (Nine West, about 20 years old and still going strong)
white and yellow gold huggie earrings
medium blue and turquoise polka dot enamel bracelet
And I made it to the office early enough to apply makeup…
I’m wearing a skirt I got in NYC at Peter Elliot Outlet that I adore – gray pleated with flower pressed into it. White button up shirt, red Kate Spade heels with gold bows on the toes, gold jewelry.
Yay! I love this color block blanket, and will show to Rosa, who can pick it up in White Plains!
As for the OP, today am wearing a Nike Sweatshirt with matching Nike Sweatpant’s and my Nike Air’s, b/c I am workeing from HOME and tending to Grandma Leyeh and her post surgical recovery from bunion’s! Myrna stopped by yesterday after her marathon run and she was freezeing! I told her she should NOT run in this weather but she is such an athelete that she could NOT pass it up. Grandma Leyeh is very impressed with Myrna and told me I would be MARRIED if I had a tuchus like her’s. She is probabley right, but I still do my step’s every day. Since Grandma Leyeh is here, I must do my step’s on my Eliptical machine here while I watch the Today Show.
Isn’t Savanah Guthrie phenomenal? She also has a law degree! Mabye I could get a job being a new’s caster like her, tho I am NOT a huge fan of the other show’s!
I made out like a bandit at the JC Penney sale this weekend. I got $400 worth of clothes for $90 (I’m plus size, so my options are few and expensive, so this was really really exciting. I got pants that FIT without tailoring!!! EEEEEEEE)
So I’m wearing black slim ankle pants, a black silk shell, a blue, grey and white print jacket, blue and silver statement necklace and diamond studs. With my beloved Cole Haan Julianas.
I’m plus size too, and l-o-v-e JCPenney — they always seem to be having a sale and it can be so cheap. So happy for your great buys!
Would love more details about the pants, shell, and jacket. Do their plus lines run TTS?
I haven’t thought to shop there, but I was lusting after some knockoff Ferragamo flats they have. How do the clothes fit/hold up?
I’m super impressed by JC Penney’s quality. For the pricepoint, the clothes are way better made than Lane Bryant,f or instance.
Yes, true to size. Their Worthington pants are amazing. I have very wide hips but a small waist, so I have to have almost all of my pants tailored. Their Worthington curvy fit pants fit me perfectly. I bought them in black, white and print (which is shocking for me!). I have an old pair I’ve worn a couple times of week for 2 years that finally gave out on me.
They have nice basic shells in neutrals and some bright prints–those printed shells were too bold for my taste though.
The jackets are a really nice quality. They’re actually lined, which isn’t common for a $60 jacket and the fabric feels very nice and well made.
They have nice casual clothes too–jeans and non-basic tees, button ups that actually cover my chest without gaping, etc.
I beat the heck out of my clothes–I do events so am always running climbing on/under things, then come home and throw everything in the washer dryer–they still look fresh and sharp even after months of harsh treatment.
In my very casual business casual office…dark skinny jeans, a Pleione short sleeved silky ivory blouse, black cardigan, vintage pearl and ruby earrings, black booties. I wish I could wear spring shoes but it’s still freezing cold and snowy here.
It is cold here…so black with cobalt blue pencil skirt (older AT) with soft black mock and fly away sweater, a long tassel necklace/ simple silver dangle earrings, opaque hose and my La C Mila boots. Wore a Cobalt blue cape to office to keep warm!
Purple herringbone Tahari (Macys) skirt suit
Green feather-looking cashmere 3/4 sleeve pullover sweater (Talbots)
black lace heels (BCBG – DSW)
two purple and one black skinny Bittar bangles
elongated oval silver hoop earrings
Filodoro hosiery – Aurora style (shapings dot com)
silver and rhinestone large floral trembler pin (vintage, ebay)
fuchsia trench style with fit/flare raincoat (Gumps online)
Banana Republic slacks in grey-on-grey cheetah pattern (it’s more subtle than it sounds)
Olive green blouse from Kohl’s five-ish years ago, still going strong
Grey cashmere cardigan, thrifted
Black Chelsea boots
Silver necklace/earrings/watch, silver and garnet ring
Brightest, happiest, poppiest pink lipstick I own to help combat a nasty case of The Mondays
I’m getting one final wear out of a black and grey plaid wool dress from banana republic, which is somehow still sleeveless so I have a black 3/4-sleeve tee underneath, plus black tights and black booties.
I bought a great grey wool (kind of like a very nice felt, if that makes sense) blazer at massimo dutti last week that I wore for the walk in. I’ll see if I can find a link online, it’s a great weight for spring and not so stuffy that I can’t wear it with my casual wardrobe.

Black pin-striped seasonless wool pants
3/4 sleeved faux-wrap shirt with a black and white pattern (Classiques Entier)
Black sweater vest
Black suede wedges
My vintage diamond cocktail ring that I wear always.
CZ “diamond” stud earrings.
It’s still in the 30’s here in Chicago. So I throw on my black scarf and my A line black winter coat and I’m good to go.
Burgundy ankle pants (Old Navy “pixie” pants– considering picking up a few more colors of these)
Navy shell (Michael Kors, the cheaper Dillards line)
Pale blue cardigan (old Banana Republic)
Floral print scarf in pale blue, navy, burgundy, yellow, and kelly green (J.Crew last year)
Nude patent flats (Antonio Melani, five years old and ready to be replaced)
Pearl studs
I’m dressed for Monday

Black gap skinny pants
Grey halogen cashmere open-weave crew sweater with black tank underneath
Grey manolo suede point toe pumps
Gold unode50 square stud earrings

Great, drapey white Calvin Klein shell. Buy it, fellow plus size/busty ladies. It’s amazing.

Cusp size here!
Reddish pink sleeveless shell – Ann Taylor
Grey Devin ankle pants – Ann Taylor (I’m obsessed with the Devin pants – not too pricy, comes in lots of colors, actually fits me without tailoring needed!)
White cardigan – old J.Crew
Tan/gold ballet flats with a bow on top – J. Crew
Tan and gold Kate Spade watch
Business casual here – black skinny cords, black & white print blouse, bluish teal cardigan, black heeled lace up oxfords (shoeties?)
Late to the party, but in case anyone else is still reading, I’m wearing a nautical-style, navy blue pencil skirt with white detail, a yellow cardigan over a plain, white t-shirt, and navy flats with blue polka dots.
This is a fun game! Skinny dark burgundy pants (old), long sleeveless shell with dark burgundy and brown floral pattern (wilfred), loose beige knit cardigan (lululemon), brown frye booties. i always wear pearls to work, today I’m wearing pale pink and grey ones.
I’m pumped for a good Monday! I actually had a good night’s rest, I got up a bit early and went for a longer walk than usual with my pup, had a good breakfast with a green smoothie, and just feel super motivated. I’ve already checked off a few items off my to-do list, so I’m ready to OWN today.
Yay! Me too! Packed a healthy lunch and prepped my green smoothie the night before, so my morning was smooth sailing and I left my house early for once.
For those who are interested in my smoothie prep, I filled my large nutribullet container with spinach, fruit and avocado, screwed on the flat lid and froze overnight. Took it out when I first woke up to defrost at room temp, then added coconut water and blended it right before I left the house (about 45 minutes later). Added the drinking lid and drank it during my commute. I love that I can use the same container to store, blend, and drink my smoothie, just switching out the different lids.
Nice! Does the spinach GE sufficiently chopped up that way though? If I don’t blend my spinach with liquid first until it is just green liquid I wind up with giant unappetizing spinach chunks that never blend away.
But FYI for anyone interested in doing similar – many blenders (including my cheap, 15 year old from Target one) are the size of a narrow mouth Mason jar at the base – so I do similar by just switching out the blender piece or lid to drink directly out of the blending container. To avoid the “giant chunks of spinach” problem, I will blend a whole bag of spinach with liquid, and then freeze that into Mason jars (less than 1/2 full). Then if I put the Mason jar from the freezer to the fridge the night before, it’s sufficiently defrosted to use as a smoothie base.
Yup, spinach blends in completely. I haven’t tried it with heartier greens yet, but my friend uses her nutribullet for kale. Try blending it longer to see if that helps.
Whoa we are on the ball today. Got 8 hours of sleep, did yoga, had coffee, and got a breakfast smoothie at the fancy new juice place, answered all my pressing emails before 10am.
Here’s to the rest of the week, y’all!
Praise God, there is a new person in the office and Annoying Guy is focusing all his attention on her. Someone else gets to listen to his mansplaining!
One other question, how do you keep track of random bits of info, like the size of the water filler for the fridge, the filter for the air conditioner, and the ink for the printer?
Trying to figure out the best way to have this information with me (ideally cell phone based), because I always forget or just plain don’t know what type of something I need to buy when I’m in a store.
Notes app on my phone. Create a note titled “household info” or something similar.
This. I have folders/lists for everything: books I want to read, gift ideas for important people in my life, sizes so I don’t have to wonder what size shirt to buy for Mr. AIMS, restaurants I liked in X place on vacation so when someone later asks me to recommend a place I don’t have to wonder what that tapas place was called, etc.
Create household products folder in your gmail (or whatever). email yourself and DH a picture of the item and in the subject line of the email put the product #/info so you don’t even need to bother opening the email to find it. The folder will just be a list of products. I send it to my DH too (or vice versa) and he has the same kind of folder in his gmail as well. I find it’s handy to have the product picture in addition to the number in case the numbers change/or I’m trying to explain what I’m looking for to a store clerk.
Whenever I buy something (like a new printer), I take a picture of the box with the ink cartridge numbers and details, and put it in a file on my Google Drive called “Household info”. It’s a lifesaver. I can access it on my phone and find out what filter I need, what size windshield wipers, etc in a second.
same, just my Google Drive file is named “the Mansion”, just because. We also keep track of utilities over time and keep inventory lists of stuff that is currently in storage.
I use Evernote for this, pro version. There’s an iphone app. You can save notes, tag them, and search for them easily. Lifesaver.
I keep this information within LastPass, because that’s where I dump all of my brain – I have a secure note called “Model Numbers”. I can also attach pictures – for instance, I took a picture of the back of the TV where the model number, serial number, etc are. No reason it has to be in Last Pass other than that’s where I file everything else, and it’s available on my phone, web based and on my computer.
I also use Google Keep (it’s like Post-Its on your phone) for other lists, like a running list of gifts I’ve already purchased and gifts I need to buy, shirt sizes for my husband, shoe sizes for my kids, etc.
file in wish list on amazon
paper file with info in it … by category – plumbing, appliances, lighting etc.
I use Google Keep for this. Where it comes in really handy is packing lists – I can bring up any packing list I’ve made since I started using the app and copy/paste it into a new note.
I love all these suggestions.
I still have folders for all the various manuals for household items. Paper folders. And include the receipts with them (stapled) and they usually include info on which filters you need etc..
But I need to go electronic.
I also have a word document of all of the House related things that need to be done throughout the year. For example, get out the humidifier in Nov, change the filters in Jan and March. Service the heater in October. Put in the storm windows in late April. Etc…… And I try to glance at this document (that I have printed out and in my kitchen, so there is a chance I will glance at it occasionally.
Also, when I get my new calendar in December for the following year (I keep a paper calendar hanging in the kitchen), I glance at my household list and add those important items into my yearly calendar.
I have tried going digital with my calendar, but that hasn’t ever stuck. And then it is harder to share with the household. Having something hanging, that everyone looks at every day (in the kitchen) still works for us.
Most manuals are available online. I’ve been trying to stop keeping the physical copes.
I track stuff like this in Evernote with a picture of the item or just in the Notes app on my phone. I also do most of my shopping online so I’ll sometimes search my Amazon order history to find things.
“Google Keep” ap is great for this
Hi ladies. Its become obvious to me I need to get better commuting shoes. I moved six months ago and have been commuting 2 miles a day on foot. But I’ve been doing it it basic Payless ballet flats with no support. Now I’ve worn through 2 pairs, which I really noticed when it rained last week and water seeped in the hole I must have worn into pair two. Not to mention its starting to hurt my feet.
So, what would you recommend for supportive, slip on, black shoes? I’d spend up to $75. They don’t need to look like work shoes, but I’m looking for something that’s not quite “Working Girl.” Thanks!
Bzees shoes. They’re like walking on clouds and are easy to slip on and off. They’re definitely not work shoes, but are much sleeker than Working Girl style sneakers. Highly recommended.
Skechers Go Walk! They’re slip on, you don’t need socks with them, they dry really fast if they get wet, and they are SO comfy. I wore mine walking miles all over Disney World and they’re great for walking to work.
Pumas Zandy. They are very comfortable and supportive for walking. They have a suede patch on the back of the heel that makes breaking them in a little painful, but after that they are fantastic, and they sort of bridge the gap between sneakers and work shoes. I love them.
Not the OP, but thanks! This is exactly what I need after finally admitting that I need better shoes than ballet flats for my 2+ miles per day on foot.
They’re probably a 4-letter word around here, but I used to wear Kaydee Crocs — they’re sling-back flat that (to me, at least) don’t immediately scream “Crocs.” They were a godsend to my plantar fasciitis.
I swear by Kadee Crocs. Those things are magic. I walk miles every day and they save me. I wear them to walk the dog, to go to Disney all day (I live 5 minutes away, so Disney trips are common), and I keep an emergency pair in my event bag for those 18 hour days on my feet. They are heaven to change into.
They helped with your PT, you say?
I’d looked at them, but dismissed them as not supportive enough without trying – my arches are stupid high. Should I give it a go?
I need crazy arch support and the Kadees are a godsend. i can’t wear the traditional Crocs, but the Kadees are heaven
My feet thank you, these are great suggestions!
Can someone sharing thier cleaning schedule with me for house keeping? I want to start doing a few things each day instead of letting things pile up but I’m a bad or at least inexperienced house keeper and need all the help I can get.
Check out Flylady! It’s a great way to get started.
UFYH is also helpful.
I try to sweep the floors every other day, wipe down counters after every meal and keep things tidy. Other than that, if it’s just you (and you’re at work all day) you really shouldn’t need to clean things THAT often. Every other week would be fine for the bathroom and kitchen and vacuuming, etc.
Big things (vacuuming, mopping, bathtub) get done every two weeks. Once a week I dust, clean the toilet, wipe down bathroom surfaces. I’m also religious about changing my sheets and towels once a week. I wipe down the kitchen counters and stove top after every time I cook. I try to do little things like that frequently so the mess doesn’t build up.
So I like this coat/wrap (it reminds me of the Dude sweater, which I don’t consider a bad thing), but how is this a splurge Monday? Did the format change?
It’s not a splurge per se, but I’d consider it a splurge for what is, after all, a scarf. Plus it’s the end of the month. (Or maybe it’s just me with a severe case of too-much-month-for-the-money this month)
nope, our mistake; CB got posted way too early. sorry for the confusion!
I woke up so many times last night after having had stressful dreams. No nightmares and no dreams about work, but dreams about mundane things that were really stress inducing. Happy Monday!
I’m in the same boat, and it’s super frustrating because I went to bed early so I could recover from an exhausting weekend, but my brain just couldn’t calm down!
I even took a Unisom last night and kept waking up :(
Empathy.
I’m brainstorming ideas to make this better…so far I’ve come up with journaling before bed.
Me too. I don’t remember specifically what I was dreaming about but I kept waking up feeling really uncomfortable.
I’ve been having dreams lately where I’m getting ready to go somewhere and I can’t leave – things keep coming up in the way. It doesn’t matter if dream-me is headed for vacation or the store, I just can’t get there! They don’t exactly stress me out but I’m not a fan, either.
Do any of you have good resources for thinking about anger? Or just insights/anecdata to share?
I tend to gripe a lot (not one of my best habits, I know), but I am a really even-keeled person–once I’ve registered my gripe, I don’t hold onto it. My partner takes the opposite approach–incredibly generous with the world on a moment-to-moment basis, but sometimes just gets MAD and needs a while to simmer through that reaction.
Partner’s occasional anger has taken on anthropological quality for me, so I am interested in learning about how anger can serve different communication/learning styles or why it is a resource for some of us but not others. I would like to avoid the trap of thinking that anger is a “lesser” or “wasted” emotion–or, if you think that’s not a trap but rather gospel truth, please enlighten me!
TIA.
When I get mad, I get MAD! It’s rare and it usually only last 20 minutes and I know not to take any actions based on those feeling. (But catch me then, and I’ll swear a blue streak at you.) I actually kind of like being that way because it’s over so fast. Afterwards I’m frustrated, but the anger is all burned off. I think of it kind of like a flambé.
