We've had a fairly conservative week thus far — a black suit! beige pumps! a white blouse! — so I'll admit: I was on the hunt for a really colorful, playful pair of heels. These Sergio Rossi pumps were strong contenders, but then I saw these Kurt Geigers — while less crazy in color, that super skinny stiletto is h-o-t. I think the pink is fun, but note that they do come in a black, as well as a beige patent. They're $500 at Nordstrom (read the reviews re sizing if you're tempted). The heel looks like it will snap off… or up and turn the shoe into a low wedge.
Anonymous
Yeah, I thought they were cute until I really looked at the heel. It looks like a kick-stand.
Ginjury
It looks like it already did snap off and you just happened to have a little stick and the exact paint color to fashion a make-shift heel to last you the rest of the day.
I really just can’t get behind these.
la vie en bleu
I see these on fancy chicas on street style blogs and stuff all the time and they scare me every time. But then again I tripped and fell the other day in totally flat ankle booties, so….
TO Lawyer
I don’t understand street style. I like to think I’m relatively fashionable but the only time I’m trekking around town in 4+ inch heels is on a Saturday night out and I’m usually cabbing it there and back. I love heels but I don’t think I could walk around in these without breaking an ankle.
Love the colour though!
la vie en bleu
ha, I’m even impressed with that! The highest heels I have are 3.5″ and they have a .75″ platform. And even that is pushing it for me. k-padi can also attest to the fact that i fell flat on my face while wearing 2.5″ heeled boots. I am just a disaster, clearly.

I like the color, but not the heel.

These would get stuck in a sidewalk crack on the first wear.
anon-oh-no
eh. you learn not to step in the cracks.
And the heel wont break off.
Coach Laura
Pretty but not practical for me.
Ellen
Yay! I agree with Coach Laura. VERY impractical b/c you do NOT want to be to noticed on the street, which is what these pump’s would do. There are already ENOUGH dirtbag’s in NYC who whistel at us, and by haveing our tuchuses propped up with THESE heel’s, this onley would give them a REAL excuse to call out sexueal thing’s to us (like that could realy make us care about these pig’s). FOOEY!
I had a guy today at lunch call out to me on 35th and 5th, askeing me if I could [do something disgussting to him] b/c I looked like I was an expert at doeing that. Can you imageine–here I am, a profesional attorney at law, in good standing with the Bar of the State of New York, and this bearded creetin think’s both that (1) I am an expert in such a task and (2) would immediately do this for him right on 35th street? When I told my dad, he said that men say alot of things to pretty women in the hope they will get a rise out of them, but they know that we would NOT take them up on this. He remembers when a buddy of his in the service did that in Munick that the woman had the guy pull off his pant’s and underwear, and after he did, she scooped both of those up and ran away, leaveing him onley with a shirt on in 40 degree weather! YAY!!!!! I say we woman MUST not put up with men who think their winkie’s deserve our attention on the street’s of New York! FOOEY on that!
But dad also said that I should NOT wear provocative pump’s b/c that excite’s men into saying and doeing thing’s they should NOT. I said FOOEY b/c it should not be tolerated, men’s behavor like that just b/c we dress niceley. We argued about that, but in the end he agreed that MEN should keep their winkie’s to themselves unless a woman invites a man to let him bear his winkie in public, which should NOT occur to often. YAY!!!!

I could use some help with luggage. I’m looking for a large backpack that doesn’t just open from the top, like a backpack, but that you can unzip all the way around, so inside it functions more like a duffle bag. Wheeled backpacks seem to be constructed this way, which would be great, except that I’d prefer something that does not look like a backpacking pack. I like the more formal styles (and the pockets!) of Tumi backpacks, but they all seem smaller than what I’m looking for.
Can any of you point me to a formalish-looking rolling backpack that is somewhat large? It does not have to fit carry-on size requirements. Failing this, if anyone has quality luggage brand recommendations other than Tumi and Briggs & Riley (I’ve already checked these places), please pass these along! Thank you.
LilyS
Check out Minaal – it’s not rolling, but otherwise fits your brief. It originated on Kickstarter but I believe they’re now in full production.

The Osprey Travel Pack at REI is what you want (though it doesn’t roll). My husband has one and loves it. I want one for myself. They have rolling ones too, but not sure about if they have a backpack.

You want a Tom Binh aeronaut. (I want one too, after seeing a friend’s. It was amazing.)
Edit – I can’t tell from your question if you just want a backpack or a wheeled backpack. This doesn’t have wheels.
Hildegarde
Many thanks to all of you; these are some great suggestions. The Osprey and the Aeronaut look like exactly what I was looking for. (And to anon a mouse, the wheels aren’t required; I just wasn’t able to find un-wheeled backpacks that were large enough that weren’t trekking-type backpacks).

This is my husband’s favorite type if bag (hands free FTW). He has a 10+ year old large wheeled Victorinox backpack that is still going strong. These maybe more sporty/rugged than what you’re looking for, but check out Timbuk2’s Aviator series (sign up for their emails…they’re always running sales) and Victorinox Tourist (spendier and looks more techy than our bag).
Paging WildKitten and CapHillAnon: LASIK
I missed yesterday’s post, but just had lasik done a few months ago with TLC. I was happy with the experience. The surgeon was nice–a bit of an oddball, but he did my regular eye doctor’s lasik, so I had no question he was qualified. If you have any questions, I’m happy to answer them.
Wildkitten
Oh that is a really good endorsement. Who was the doc? What did it cost? Thanks!
LASIK
The surgeon is Andrew Holzman, who as I understand the the only surgeon operating at both DC-area locations. I only met him the first time about 15 minutes before the surgery, which I assume would bother a lot of people but I didn’t mind–plus they gave me a low dose of xanax beforehand so then I definitely didn’t mind! Total cost was $5100 for both eyes.
MJ
One consideration–if you have a FSA or an HSA, put the money in for January and then do it in January. It’s great to use tax-free dollars for this. I did PRK, where they do one eye at a time, and I definitely used spending account money. Highly recommend.
Anon2
I also had lasik (well prk actually) at tlc with dr. Holman and can recommend him and tlc as well. I was able to get a discount with my insurance so it was $4300 for both eyes. My husband also got lasik same place with dr. Holman and we are both very happy with our eyes no experience with the tlc office (we go to the one in Rockville). Dr. Holman felt a little hyper when I initially met him but felt very comfortable with him during the surgery.

Ladies- how do you transition your wardrobe when you are pregnant and starting to show but don’t want to buy a whole new wardrobe for basically 9 months of your life. Are there any staple pieces that worked for you. This is going to be a summer baby so I would like dresses and skirts for work but they seem less versatile and much as I love the Skirt, it’s one of the items I can’t wear any longer unless I buy a few in bugger sizes and I still have 4-5 more months to go!
HSAL
I’m no help on transition pieces (but I’ll be coming back to read other comments in hopes of some suggestions) but I would recommend checking out the maternity capsule from Outfit Posts. 16 pieces into 40 outfits that work for the office. I’m strongly considering just buying identical or similar items and just recreating the whole thing so I don’t have to think about it. I don’t necessarily want to buy all new clothes but I also don’t want to just make things work that don’t. If you’re looking for more casual things, Putting Me Together had one as well.
tesyaa
Think about getting a few dresses in neutral colors, and wear with various cardigans and accessories like scarves and jewelry.
Anonymous
You’re going to need maternity clothes. There’s just no way around it. Its also hard to know what pieces work really well and which ones are just not that comfortable or awesome.
Personally, my workhorses were 3/4 length tee shirts from H&M (bought one in every color) –they were easy to wear with a non-maternity cardigan and a scarf, two good pair of jeans — one blue and one black (love Topshop maternity), and a black Isabelle Oliver wrap dress.
Since you are going to be pregnant in the summer, I suggest tees and/or tanks instead of 3/4 length shirts, maybe one pair of jeans and one skirt (or shorts if that’s your thing) and a dress that is short sleeve or sleeveless. The key is getting basic pieces that can be worn in multiple ways with accessories to change up the look.
Manhattanite
I’m with you right now. 19 wks and probably my last week of non maternity clothes to the office.
I’ve incorporated scarves into my work wear. Blazers are good, longer cardigans, waterfall cardigans especially. I have a couple of looser rayon button downs that are more flowy. I kinda hate the Bella band bc i find it itchy, so I’m using a rubber band to keep my pants up right now. I never found maternity pants I liked for no1, but I did find a pencil skirt at motherhood maternity that i wore a ton last time. And my regular skirts were one of the first items I had to give up. Also, my boobs get big fast, so that’s kind of a pain for fitting into regular clothes. Definitely treat yourself to new bras as you get bigger.
Basically I find myself jury rigging my wardrobe until I have to give up pretending my clothes still fit and start wearing maternity clothes bc that’s all that fits. Maternity clothes are depressingly ugly, too.
layered bob
yesss. Why are maternity clothes SO BAD?! I will be a summer associate this summer at 26 to 36 weeks pregnant and trying to scout conservative law office, please-take-me-seriously maternity clothes and they ALL SUCK.
Kara
I’m pregnant right now with my second and, though I bought a lot of maternity clothes the first time, I find that I keep returning to the same few pieces- and am entering my third trimester still wearing a lot of my non-maternity clothes. If you are lucky enough to mainly only grow in the belly (this time has been better for me than last time!), you may be able to wear “normal” clothes for at least 6 months of the pregnancy. Pencil skirts are generally not the most flattering maternity look, so it’s a great time to stick to dresses. Here’s what I would recommend buying:
A couple pairs of maternity pants – maybe ank
Maternity tank tops (Target and Gap have great ones) in basic colors – white, black, maybe one fun color
Maternity dresses – you can always get the short sleeve/sleeveless versions and add a cardi for work.
Work-appropriate maternity dress (Target can be surprisingly good for this, too.)
Otherwise, you can probably get away with your existing “forgiving” clothes – wrap dresses, tunic tops, and cardigans – for most of the pregnancy. Not sure how formal your office is, but a black maternity dress can work in a lot of different situations. If you’re dying to buy something, think scarves, jewelry, bags, shoes, cardigans – stuff you can wear when you’re not preggo.
There’s a book called “Styling the Bump” that helps a little. Good luck – and congrats!
TBK
Target had a black maternity sleeveless shift dress in a high quality knit that was a god-send for me. I wore it all the time! It was sufficiently straight cut that I could justify wearing it post-partum, too, when I wasn’t back in my old clothes yet (well, I’m still not in them, but when I was still in the very poochy post-baby belly stage). I also had a black knit maternity pencil skirt I wore all the time. But definitely look into consignment. I bought probably 75% of my clothes there. Then I bought a few cheap items at Target. Then I think three items at Pea in the Pod (jeans, a nice top for work, yoga pants).
kc esq
My most useful maternity work clothes were not maternity at all. I got a few stretchy knee-length dresses a size up from my regular size (one for $8 off the Macy’s clearance rack) and wore them with (unbuttoned) one-button non-maternity blazers.
Anonattorney
I second this. I haven’t bought any maternity clothes yet, and I’m almost 6 months in. I have a few stretchy or jersey-type work dresses that I wear with blazers that continue to work just fine. I also had a couple of dresses that were a size too big that I have held onto. Those have been fitting. I wear the Bella Band with my work pants and it’s not a problem. I may need to buy a couple things for the last trimester, but for a month or two at most.
I think part of it really depends on how you end up gaining weight during pregnancy. I was shocked that I didn’t put more weight on in my thighs and butt – that’s usually where I gain. Because I haven’t gained there, I just need to accommodate the belly. If your dresses are long enough, and stretchy enough, they will just stretch around the belly. Just remember that the front hem will come up a bit to account for that space. Shorter dresses will become even shorter.
Preg-projects
I’m interested in this thread too, no advice! I’m at 12 weeks and struggling to conceal my pregnancy for a few weeks longer. And I’m a very tailored/tucked in kind of gal. The transition to “flowy” pieces is really hard for me.
Need to Improve
Wrap dresses. They will fit until the end and then again postpartum.
SF Bay Assoc
I’m 7 months along and living in a weekly rotation of 3 maternity wrap dresses (Ingrid and Isabel), one maternity faux wrap dress (Gap), and a couple very stretchy non-maternity jersey dresses with an elastic waist and self-belt, plus one maternity black skirt (Japanese Weekend) for court days. I layer with Target’s Be Maternity camis. My belly is too big/in the wrong place for a regular size wrap dress to work – too little overlap, but I could see them working for someone else carrying differently. I could not stand the Bella Band, personally. At this point, I have given up on pants entirely and have no regrets.
Lyssa
The things that I’m wearing all the time (leftovers from my last pregnancy, and I’m at 27 weeks now):
* Gray pencil skirt from MM
* Two pairs of slacks, gray from MM, black from Target (I like the Target ones better)
* Maternity jeans from the Gap, though purchased on Ebay
* Black yoga pants from the Gap
* A red 3/4 sleeve sweater, from Target
* All of my old (non-maternity) blazers and cardigans
* Basic maternity t-shirts from Target (2 colors)
I’m just starting to work into dresses (second the recs for Target, though MM had some really nice options on their sale racks last time), though I expect I’ll turn to them a lot more as the weather warms up (it’s definitely more comfortable to not have something around your waist). I’m just recently starting to get to where most of my non-maternity tops won’t work, though some longer ones are still OK. I plan to get a pair of shorts soon, and maybe a sundress (I reached the end of my pregnancy in Dec last time, though this time it will be June). I might need some more short sleeved shirts, though I still have a few that I haven’t used yet on account of the weather.
Try to avoid black, because I find that SO much stuff is black that you start to feel like a goth girl. Solid colors are best, and accessories are definitely your friend. You need at least a couple of things that you can easily wear around the house (jeans, yoga pants, shorts, whatever you like) and I’d say at least 3 work appropriate bottoms, along with a few dresses and a good number of tops. The dresses that I got from Target were great – soft, non-wrinkly cottony sorts that are nice enough for work (with a jacket or cardi) but comfortable to wear around the house or casually, so I’d look for stuff like that, that can do multiple duties.

I actually enjoyed the chance to get clothes that I knew I was only going to keep for 9 months (actually ended up being two 9-month periods in three years). It was a chance to just pick things for fun. I got maybe 6 neutral bottom pieces and a bunch of tops and a couple cardigans. I added a couple of dresses (short sleeve tunic type dresses that I could layer over tissue tees and add a cardigan for the colder times, then wore as-is for the summer months). Then, the second time around, I added a few things just to have some variety. I was pregnant over the course of every month of the year, and the second time around involved being very pregnant in the summer. I finally broke down and bought maternity shorts for that time, and added 2 pairs of capris to the original 6 neutral bottoms. I work in higher ed, so formality was not my highest concern. Not sure what I would have done if suits were required.
anon
Just had a baby. You won’t know until you’re there where and when you will gain weight/size, so it’s hard to predict which non-maternity items will work for you. I had three Old Navy knit pencil skirts, a size up, that worked for 8 months for me, and a few American Living surplice front dresses from JC Penney that also worked for 7 or 8 months and I wore ALL THE TIME. For the most part, maternity wise, only Old Navy tops were long enough — Motherhood and Pea in the Pod were all too short. My work staples were were a pair each of grey and black maternity dress pants (get ones with some stretch because you may need it that last month and you won’t know till then), a lot of Old Navy maternity tank tops that I wore with open cardigans (note: my regular button cardigans, and blazers, did not work after about 5 or 6 months due to larger chest/ribcage and looked weird anyway with my very low bump), and a couple of other Old Navy ruched side shirts. Broke down at the beginning of month 9 and got a black short sleeved knit Target dress for $14 that I then wore 3 x/week for the last few weeks with different cardigans.

I posted at the tail end of the morning’s post, re-posting here: What are some of your best resources regarding physical/mental/se ual abuse and recovery? My bff is about to confront her mom (who has suffered all abuse from her husband for over 20 years) that the reason my bff won’t allow her step dad around her kids is due to step dad’s se ual abuse of bff when bff was in high school. I’ve suggested therapy, but what other reputable resources are there?
(Thank you “L” for your suggestion of RAINN and “The Gift of Fear”)
Anon ADA
Most jurisdictions have a some sort of centralized center for child abuse victims (which, if your friend was in high school, qualifies). The centers go by different names – I’d try searching for “(your city) child abuse center” or something like that. These are one stop shops for everything – most conduct investigations, do medical exams, have counseling, and most importantly for your friend, have tons of information regarding everything there is to know about child abuse. They would know all the programs and resources available in her area.

Just out of curiosity- is there anyone else out there who also has to take an antihistamine (in my case, allegra) every day? I had seasonal allergies as a kid, which faded somewhat over time. About a year ago I realized I was itching like crazy, all the time, and when I would even touch the place that itched, I would get huge red marks (and sometimes welts), which apparently is called dermatographia. So now I take allegra every day. If I forget to take it in the morning, I just progressively itchier throughout the day and will occasionally get a rash/random welt (not a hive) on my neck or face that looks like a bug bite. Just wondering if this is really unusual. For context, I had eczema as a kid and have very mild psoriasis on my scalp (contained to one patch).
LilyS
I have to throughout spring and summer, because of pollen allergies (I haven’t yet figured out what kind of pollen exactly it is that I’m allergic to).
Itchy
I take a daily Claritin for what my dermatologist basically refers to as ‘exercise allergy.’ When my body temp rises, my body releases histamin and I get itchy welts. Esp. on my trunk and upper legs. The Claritin helps enough that I can work out, though not as much as I used to.
anon w medical background
be careful of this! There is such a thing as exercise-induced anaphylaxis. Can be found in folks who have shown no other signs of allergy before.
Anon
Yes, this is a real thing! I have witnessed it–very scary.
anon
yes. I have taken claritin daily for probably 15 – 20 years (I can’t believe I’m old enough to say that…)
Oddly enough, I went off claritin for a while a few years ago (why? I don’t recall) and noticed that after a few months, I was just itchy all the time. I started back on it, and the itching went away.
For skin management, I have to be diligent with just about any kind of lotion. I don’t have super sensitive skin, so I can get away with just about anything. But, I have to keep reapplying. I get flare-ups of eczema in the winter (this year was particularly bad), especially on my knuckles, elbows & shins. Youngest son has bad eczema too, oldest son has a dairy allergy.
I alternate lotions, though. I have really good luck with CeraVe, and I am using the CeraVe SA cream on my body, and the regular cream on YDS. Only the stuff in the tub–not the bottle of lotion. I also like Palmer’s cocoa butter lotion, but only the fragrance-free one (the regular smells like weird chocolate), or the shea lotion. I also use a lot of coconut oil. YDS has displayed traits of dermatographia (especially when he was a baby–you could just run your fingernail across his belly and you’d immediately see a red welty line), and I do too sometimes, but not often. Hubs and I both have seasonal allergies, too, so our kids are just pretty well doomed.
anon
I guess I’ll just have to plan on taking it forever then! it sucks because even the generic allegra isn’t very cheap, and Claritin doesn’t help as much.

Check Costco–a year’s supply of Claritin or Zyrtec is like $14. I don’t know if they have allegra though.
tesyaa
I switched myself from Claritin to Zyrtec last summer because Claritin stopped working after many years. I did get Zyrtec at Costco but I don’t remember it being quite that cheap… I think it was about $30 for maybe a 180 day supply, and that was with a coupon, but still fairly affordable. I don’t need to take it every day though, luckily.
Ginjury
I know BJ’s has the generic Zyrtec for ~$14 for a year’s supply.
Meg Murry
If you have an HSA or FSA you can get your doctor to write you a prescription and then you can get reimbursed for the OTC med from pre-tax $. Still not cheap, but better.
Anonymous
I have dermographism and take zyrtec every day. I have zytrec stashed everywhere, but even still if I take it some days I can get hives just from say rubbing a sore spot on my arm. The best thing I do is put on lotion. Dry skin will make things worse. Once a week I try to take an oatmeal bath (aveeno is great, but I just grind up my regular quaker oats and put them in an old section of knotted tights). LOTS of water and when it is really dry, humidifier. Also, force yourself to stop touching your skin and when you scratch, give yourself a time limit (I count to 10 otherwise I keep going, because it still feels itchy) and then immediately moisturize.
anon
the oatmeal bath is a great idea… and an excuse for a bath every week! thanks

I just went to the allergist and was told I am dermatographic too. I take Allegra every day. I also have dust and cat allergies, woot.

good to know I’m not the only one! I have 2 cats, I don’t think I’m specifically allergic to them but they probably don’t help matters much…

I take 60 mg of Allegra every day to prevent my asthma from becoming clinical (which mainly only happens when I have a cold, and I get asthmatic bronchitis). I switch to twice a day if I have a cold. But I am also dermatographic and have many sensitives (not allergies) and it really helps. 60 mg Allegra is harder to buy in larger quantities.
Anonymous
My BFF takes Allegra every day because she has a terrible pollen allergy (and we live in a warm climate with pollen year-round). I think its pretty common.
Sydney Bristow
Huh. I guess that is what I have. I’ve always been able to write on myself and people are constantly asking me if I’m ok if I scratch my neck or something because it is instantly and obviously red. A nurse commented on it in passing once and I couldn’t remember what she called it until I recognized the word in what you wrote. Since I’ve never been diagnosed with anything I didn’t know there was any way to deal with it. I’m going to try taking antihistamines.
NYNY
I take generic zyrtec daily, but except for peak pollen seasons – spring trees and fall ragweed – I use a pill cutter and take only half a pill. Also, even though it’s supposed to be non-drowsy, it makes me sleepy. So I take it at bedtime. Works like a charm!
Sunshine
+1 – I take, 1/2 Zyrtec, year round, at night because it makes me sleepy. I don’t take a full pill, ever.
(Former) Clueless Summer
My doctor told me I had dermographism a few years ago. It appeared during a seasonal allergy period (I had always had the stuffy nose/eyes allergies but the skin stuff was new). I took an OTC antihistamine for that season, but I have had good luck with diet-related changes to deal with my dermographism. Sugar is a huge huge problem. Also just not itching will help a lot. The itching itself brings on more hives in my case.
Itchy
Tell me more about your diet related changes (esp. the sugar thing). I’ve never researched this specifically and am itnerested to hear what you do.

Random antecdata – I have noticed that my nose (very specifically my nose) gets itchy if I’ve had too much sugar (or alcohol, which metabolizes in a similar way).

I have a lot of “regular” allergies – stuff like laundry soap, airborn stuff when snow thaws, various spring and fall seasonal things etc. so I don’t know if this is helpful, but I found that over the years I’ve been able to eliminate enough itchiness-causing things and add extra cleaning solutions such as a great HEPA filter, minimum twice daily neti pot use, extra laundry rinses to get soap out of clothes, etc. that I was able to stop taking daily allergy pills. I worked on it slowly with a doctor though to make sure I was safe during the elimination process.
Anonymous
Yep, daily allegra-D. I’ve been on some sort of daily antihistamine for about 15 years, though in the first few years it was Claritin and then Zyrtec but those do nothing for me now. I’ve also been on allergy shots for 11 years.
Coach Laura
Claritin every day for about 20 years – grass/pollen/dust. Tried zyrtec but it dried out my eyes, nose and other assorted mucous membranes to a point that everything was painful. Have not tried allegra but was thinking about that because the Claritin doesn’t really do the job 100%.

I never would have thought of that, thank you so much! Still need to get my routine nailed down, but your tips are really helping me figure out this weirdly difficult situation.

If someone already pointed it out, possibly even me, I apologize, but check out the archives of justbento. Bento box lunches are traditionally meant to be eaten at room temperature, and the traditional bento foods contain some kind of natural preservative or tend to be safer to eat without refrigeration. The writer of that blog and book, Makiko, uses the traditional principles of bento in cuisine all over the map – from step-by-step perfect onigiri to polenta cakes. She isn’t posting a lot of recipes or bento menus right now due to illness, but her archives and book are fantastic.
