Suit of the Week: Liz Claiborne New York Diagonal Stripe Suit

·
Liz Claiborne New York Diagonal Stripe SuitWe're intrigued by this suit from Isaac Mizrahi's new collection for Liz Claiborne New York. As Liz Claiborne Chief Creative Officer Tim Gunn might have said: it's a lot of look. Accordingly, we'd probably wear it as separates except for a few specific circumstances where we want to look extremely young and hip and in-your-face creative. (So: not to court or to depositions or most meetings where you're the underling.) The diagonal stripe sleeveless dress is $89, and the matching cardigan (which is structured enough that we're counting the whole outfit as a suit) is $119. Alas: The t-straps, which we love, aren't available until March 10th.

  1. Not crazy about the suit (I agree, it is too much “look”), but I’m drooling over those shoes!

  2. This suit would be GREAT for a trip to the zoo. You’d be really in tune with the zebra’s and everything.

  3. OK, at 26 I consider myself fairly young and hip…but I can’t picture anytime that this suit would be appropriate.

It looks like a jailbird costume. Too busy for businesswear, yet too structured for outside the office. I don’t know what to make of it.

  4. Agree with everyone above: hate the “suit” (really? can we even call it a suit?), love the shoes.

It reminds me a little bit of an optical illusion art project we had to do in high school… and not in a god way.

  5. I know what to make of it, EWWWWWW!

I am young though not all that hip and I wouldn’t wear any of it. Ever.

I’ve actually purchased items I’ve seen on here, so I’m not some looky-loo, but this is the first thing I’ve ever seen on this site that I absolutely HATE.

Swing and a miss Corporette, try again!

  6. I like it and could definitely see it working at some of the fashion forward offices around town – of course, I am in LA – that *might* make a difference.

  7. I’m far from LA but still willing to weigh in. I think the real problem is that the model is standing all slouchy and has on big, bold accessories that make the effect overstated and comical. her posture makes it hard to see that the jacket has a very feminine neckline and its stripe is at the same angle as the dress. Were she buttoned up and standing up like a normal person (or for that matter, sitting at a desk like a normal person), with conservative hair and delicate jewelry, it would look summery and fun. It has me in the mood for spring anyway! Thanks for the heads up. I may go try it on.

  8. I agree, Silly Putty. One of the many, many times I’ve wished they use models in a way so as to actually, you know, model how the garment would look.

  9. Love it. I am also in LA, though. I would wear it to a weekend business function or a lunch. Very springtime or summery (which you can pull off most of the year here, anyway).

  10. I am not in LA, in fact I am in the midwest, but I love, love, love this look. I don’t think I could pull it off in the office (or even at a work affair), but for a summer evening outdoor soiree — absolutely.

  11. The fashion industry is frothing at the mouth over Mr. Mizrahi’s (whose recent book was complete unnecessary fluff) taking the helm at Liz, regardless of what the real women think.

And look how all of us felt the need to comment about it, that is a good post for Corporette. They are inciting and provoking their readers – in a good way.

For me, in Dallas, this outfit is a no go, for the cut of the garment as much as for the stripe pattern.

  12. I like just the dress. A sheath dress is hard to find and once you do, you have to go for it.

The sweater is way too much. The shoes are fabulous. In fact, I would wear the dress and shoes, maybe a belt and big bracelet. A cardigan would tone down the pattern, but would be great with the dress in red, green or yellow.

It has potential, even here on the east coast.
