Nov. 2024 Update: The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale is over for the year, and we don't yet know when the 2025 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale will be. Stay tuned for their Half-Yearly Sale, which usually starts around Dec. 23. (Unfamiliar with the NAS? Check out this page for more info on why it's the best sale of the year.) The below content is about the 2018 Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.
I'm generally not a “logo bag” kind of girl, but even I've noticed the huge popularity of MCM's line of logo bags. Their leather is soft and supple in real life, and if you like the look they're definitely more lux than the logo bags you see at suburban malls. If you've been ogling one, now is the time to strike: they're part of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale, with a shopper option (pictured) down to$429 (it'll be $650 after the sale ends), as well as a more subtle tone-on-tone pink backpack for $499; it looks like some of the other MCM bags they had in the big NAS have already sold out. I do like that this one is reversible; the inside is a fun, slightly psychedelic gingham. Medium Liz Reversible Visetos Leather Shopper

Raiders?
I for sure thought this was some sort of high priced Raiders fan purse, based on the unrecognizable logo and color way.

This is so strange. I’ve never noticed this brand, and I pay pretty close attention to this type of thing.
Anonymous
It’s fairly common in NYC, although less in the black pattern and more in the light brown.

I would also note that MCM is very popular in hip hop culture.

Well that seems coded…

No, that’s simply called an observation. You’re welcome.

Yea this is hideous.

HAHA so the black hole of my tote bag would become the Black Hole
Maybe I need this

For this kind of money, it had BETTER be good leather, but I am NOT crazy about the logo/ design. It is one thing if it was LOUIS VUTTON, but this is not a household look, and I would NOT want to have to explain the logo to my friends who ONLEY like LOUIS VUTTON. Rosa has a bag that looks like this, but she keeps the baby’s diapers in it, and it smells bad b/c she does NOT have a good liner in it for the dirty diapers. FOOEY!

I thought it was a giveaway tote bag from the MGM Vegas.
Migraine Blues
Just need to Vent for a moment. I get migraines. I take a cocktail of daily meds to prevent them, the highest dose I can tolerate given the side effects (they impair cognitive ability). I have tried just about every preventative med on the market. I take a specific BC pill for migraine prevention, skipping placebo days to avoid hormone fluctuation. I get botox for migraines every 90 days. My entire lifestyle revolves around preventing migraine. I have a bevy of prescriptions to rotate between to abort migraines when they begin. Yet, still…lately I’m getting 2 migraines a week. Better than the period where I had a chronic migraine for years, but still unacceptable. I feel like I’m doing everything I can and I just feel helpless, like I have no control.
Anonymous
It’s horrible. My migraines are way less debilitating than yours and only occur ~once/month, and I still feel like they interfere with my life a lot. And not to get all on a soapbox, but I think if migraines affected a large number of men instead of mostly women, we’d have much better treatments for them. I don’t have any advice, but sending virtual hugs and support.
First Year Anon
That sounds awful. I can’t imagine living like that. I wish I had advice. Hopefully someone here does..
Anon
Topamax? I seriously debate whether the meds make things better or worse and find it infuriating how condescending my neurologist is about the very non-trivial side effects. You’re not the only one. It’s awful and I really can’t come up with anything to say that mitigates that. I think one of the most frustrating things is how hard it is for people to understand that you can have a life altering chronic health condition that just doesn’t get better, no matter what you do.
Anon
Migraine is primarily a women’s problem and therefore the condescending attitude. I actually stopped going to my neurologist altogether because he was such as ass, to the point that it seemed like he thought I was making it up – despite classic aura, aphasia, numbness, light sensitivity etc. I don’t currently have a neurologist or Rx and I just live with them, but fortunately my frequency has gone down to maybe one per month.
I actually wrote a detailed description of an episode I had of a migraine with aura on here about a year ago. People said they found it helpful. I can try to find and link it for anyone who is curious (I’m sure OP does not need a description!)
Anyway, sorry to OP. That sucks. Can you see a specialist at a top university hospital or have you done that already?
Frozen Peach
I feel you so hard. Mine aren’t nearly as bad as yours, but I’ve had seriously seriously bad side effects from the preventative meds, to the point that I haven’t taken any for very long. I make my living with my mind. I’d rather suffer the pain and nausea a few times a month, even with the effects on my career when I have to go home or miss work, than compromise my cognition all the time. Mental clarity isnt worth trading for almost any price for me.
And OMG neurologists! The first one I saw told me to get a massage and drink more wine. This was followup to a migraine so bad I had to sign myself AMA because urgent care wanted to send me for a CT scan for a brain tumor.
MNF
Yes to neurologists being a-holes. I had such a terrible migraine a few years ago (lost my vision, puking, had to be taken by ambulance). Recently I got access to my health system portal and got to see the doctor’s notes from the incident – “presented with anxiety”. Um no.
Anonymous
There’s something to this (neurologists being a-holes, that is). I hear that if they can’t go with “anxiety,” they can always fall back on “conversion disorder” (because we’re not anxious enough), and there are now a bunch of people whose conversion disorder turned out to be a super legitimate physiological illness (and yes, it’s gendered).
Anonymous
I cannot stand reading doctor’s notes. They are so condescending and demeaning. I realize it’s how doctors talk, but honestly, the more I see behind the scenes at a doctor’s office the more I understand why so many women are primed to get interested in alternative medicine, naturopathy, etc.
lsw
I am so, so sorry. I also suffer from migraine (though not nearly as badly as you do!) and it can be so depressing. And I mean actually bring on bouts of actual depression. I really hope you feel better soon. Maybe find a new neurologist or even an out of town expert for a second opinion?
I’m so sorry. I had a really bad week this week with three migraine days and I feel that lost time so hard.
Horse Crazy
So sorry. I also get migraines, and it is so frustrating having your entire life revolve around prevention. I’ve just started taking Elavil, which seems to be working well so far, but it makes me very, very sleepy – I can’t get less than 7.5 hours of sleep every night, or else I’m a walking zombie, bad enough that I probably shouldn’t drive if I don’t get enough sleep. So now I’m the party pooper who needs to go home early all the time, who can’t go to the late movie or show, who doesn’t want to stay up late for any reason. My SO and I used to watch TV at night and then go to bed together, but now I almost always go to bed before him (which I know is not a big deal for many, but I really miss our cuddling times in bed before we went to sleep). I feel ya.
Anon Para
Thanks for your comment about how its seems like everything you do revolves around avoiding a migraine. I do the same. Can’t be out in the sun/heat too long, might get a migraine. I’ve got to eat by noon every day (an actual meal, snacking doesn’t do it), or I will for sure get a migraine. Must avoid strenuous exercise, or I might get a migraine. Not enough sleep or sleep cycle is inconsistent, might get a migraine. Can’t eat dairy, might get a migraine. It’s Tuesday, might get a migraine. The list goes on. I have missed out on many, many activities I would love to participate in (along with the travel I’ve never been comfortable doing, as I might get a migraine) in order to minimize the risk of migraine. Luckily, my neuro is great (she suffers from them too), but unfortunately can’t do much but listen and support me on the meds/lifestyle changes that help. I feel you hard on this one.
Anonymous
If you want a different perspective, perhaps try a good DO who specializes in headaches and pain? They may have some suggestions you haven’t tried. (I personally do much, much worse on BC, because I need more progesterone, not less, but my migraines are not as severe as yours sound!)
Violet
I know a guy who has big migranes, and he is very successful. So it is not limited to women, and he married a woman with migranes, so they both have something in common.

Can you share what city you are in? I can try to give you a name or two for a second opinion. Sometimes you need a new doc who thinks outside the box. There are actually some neurologists that focus on women with migraine, if you can believe it.
Sometimes there are things you need to do that are against the grain. For example,my Mom took imitrex/a tryptan every night, or she would have a migraine the next morning. She did not have rebound headaches. She saw the best neurologist in the country for migraine and he was very comfortable with this.
Do you have any family members with migraine? Often a medicine that works for one person in your family will work for you. Genetics makes a huge difference.
It really, really, really sucks. My mother’s migraines led to the deterioration of her marriage. My father was not as sympathetic as he should have been. It’s not like wearing a cast on your arm, where other people can see your injury, so it is not real to them. You suffer silently.
I strongly encourage you to treat your mood/depression/anxiety/whatever with medication. As you know, depression and migraine frequently run together and that is likely part of the disease. You must treat both because the interplay is so intense.
Anonymous
Yes yes yes. The worst part is doing everything “right” and getting one anyway, particularly when I can least manage to have the downtime.
I haven’t been able to find out whether my insurance will cover it, but there was just a new drug approved specifically to treat migraine that seems really promising (Aimovig). Anyone here used it?
Anon
Aimovig and the other CGRP inhibitors do sound very promising if you can get your insurance to cover them. They run ~$7000/year, but I think the drug company is running promotions to get you sucked in before the competitors come onto the market later this year or next, so you may be able to get them copay free or at a reasonable rate in the short term.
Seattle Freeze
You can get two months free as a trial to see if it works for you. If your insurance denies coverage, they have a bridge-to-copay program where you can get it for $5/month while pursuing insurance approval -google Aimovig patient support. Your doc/neuro can submit the paperwork to apply for these programs. I get about 12-15 migraines/month, and am now awaiting my first dose of Aimovig – fingers drossed this works for me!
Anon
7K/ year would be completely worth it to be able to live life a bit more normally.
Anonymous
Longtime migraineur (2x per week or more) here… find a university headache center with neurologists who specialize in treating migraine. There are options that are evidence-based, e.g., botox injections, the new CGRP inhibitors, the cefaly device. Topomax can have some significant side effects (it did for me) and other preventives of course were never formulated for migraine specifically, so can be really hit or miss (for me, miss). Even with all the strategies to try to prevent migraines (avoiding too much sun, a drink of wine, not getting regular sleep, etc etc) is, for some of us, just not going to be effective anyway (love the above comment “It’s Tuesday…might get a migraine)! Working with a pain psychologist can help you develop techniques to lessen the stress around the constant feeling like you are struggling to prevent… or get through.. a migraine. Having those techniques can actually help your abortive medication work faster. I’m a skeptic and it’s worked for me (and almost nothing does). There are kind, compassionate, neurologists trained in headache so accept nothing less.
AZCPA
That is so awful. I used to get 2-3 migraines a week, and basically couldn’t function. It turned out I had undiagnosed Celiac. Once I stopped eating gluten they went way – I not get 1-2 a year.
Celiac might not be your issue, but maybe its worth looking at other health factors. Will definitely take a great doctor to guide you through that process and that can be hard to find, but might be worth it.

There are actually some new migraine meds that are coming out this year (maybe have come out)? Not sure if they are any good.

Has anyone tried the Rodin & Fields lash enhancer? Any opinion on whether it works &/or how it compares to prescription stuff like Latisse?
Anonymous
I haven’t used Latisse, but the R&F one totally works. Like works so well I’ve had co-workers notice. I haven’t had any weird side effects. Even though it works, I have only bought once and now use sparingly, as I generally don’t love R&F. But it is actually worth the money IMO.
SW
It does work. I stopped using it because I also grew extra eyebrows and hair on the top of my cheeks – maybe from where my lashes were hitting my face when I blinked after I put it on? But my eyelashes are still longer than they were, even after I haven’t used it in 6 months.
anomanom
A friend of mine has seen great results, but a quick google points to lots of lawsuits. Also you have to deal with R+F. So, proceed with caution?
Anonymous
The lawsuits basically seem to deal with R&F not telling you about ingredients that Latisse and others disclose. So while R&F is sketch as F, the actual product isn’t necessarily a problem (unless those ingredients are for you. So, like, don’t use if you wouldn’t use Latisse).
Scarlett
Thanks everyone!

Anyone want to vicariously shop for me or give recommendations?
I have realized that I have a lot of solid-colored, nice shells. Think: Everlane silk shellls and similar. (I had a two week trial last summer and bought a bunch of tops to wear under suits then.) I have realized that even though I have a ton of these tops I do not really wear them a ton. Part of this is that I do not really have any interesting pants or skirts. Wearing these tops with just a black skirt or grey skirt and cardigan feels like I’m wearing part of a suit to me, and the outfit ends up fairly boring so I just don’t wear them. I’m looking for a skirt in some sort of interesting neutral print/texture that I can wear now, in the summer, and/or some lightweight pants that can also be worn in the summer that are a little more interesting than standard black pants. Any recommendations?
Torin
This is actually when I go for loud shoes and jewelry, personally. I find loud accessories more versatile than loud pants/skirts. Purple or kelly green shoes, or maybe a funky pattern, statement necklaces, etc.
anon
If you want prints, Boden has tons of them. For a more business-like vibe, I get a lot of wear out of a pair of windowpane ankle pants that I pair with solid tops.
OP
Where did you get your windowpane pants? That is more what I’m looking for. I cannot find anything that is not plaid, and plaid pants look like pajama pants to me.
I like Boden, but I think a lot of their prints are too loud and too far from what I normally wear. I am not a particularly bold dresser. I’m just trying to stop looking like I’m constantly color-blocking or wearing part of a suit.
anon at 3:58
I got mine at the banana republic outlet last year.
anon
I have them from BR too! I suffer the same issue as OP (never saw a plain colored silk shell I didn’t need to have… wtf). The windowpane pants are great- interesting enough but still very versatile and polished because it’s a classic, subtle linear pattern.
Lana Del Raygun
Lands’ End also has a lot of prints, at least for cropped and ankle pants.
Anonymous
You might search for “ tweed” pencil skirts. I have one for summer and one for winter and each has several colors in the weave so it’s easy to find other things to wear with them. For Fall, you might try “ houndstooth,” which will net you a small two-tone pattern.
Anonymous
I’ve heard from a reference that my activism (nothing too out there but some pretty standard pro choice, anti racism, fundraising for a women’s shelter) stuff was considered a concern by a potential employer and is part of why I was passed on for a job.
To be honest I wanted to reduce my social media and activism presence anyway just due to changes in lifestyle, work and health. I’ve deleted my social media accounts (which were private anyway) and I’m working on scanning my resume to take out a lot of volunteer work that someone could potentially be offended by… any other ideas?
Anonymous
Do a quick Google search on yourself to see if you were quoted in any articles or mentioned in any captions on photos.
Anonymous
make sure you do that google search through someone else’s computer, because your filter bubble will give you skewed results.
Make sure your references, who might have a positive view on these things, don’t play up your activism. They probably don’t, but just in case.
Horse Crazy
You can also Google yourself with Chrome incognito!
Anon
How does this work?
Horse Crazy
It doesn’t use your browsing history or cookies, so it’s like you’re using a computer with that all wiped.
Anonymous
Maybe pro-choice is a little more controversial, but if an employer doesn’t want someone who does anti-racism work or fundraises for women’s shelters I’m almost certain they wouldn’t be someone I want to work for.
Anonymous
You may be surprised; I’ve been astonished at how controversial women’s shelters can be (and not just among political conservatives). People suck.
Anonymous
*sigh* a pro life group was doing something basically i
not allowed and I looked into it, proved it and made a complaint. I was named as the complainer in some articles as I am specifically referenced in the investigation.
Specifically a youth leadership summit I organized for young women of colour (featuring things like how to do a press release and how to apply for a city board) was mentioned as something potentially embarrassing
Anonymous
That they are against the second is horrible. That is a great activity, I don’t see how it could be embarrassing, and I wouldn’t want to work somewhere that was against it.
Kat in VA
Totally agreed. How is the second in any way, shape, or form “potentially embarrassing?”
Anon
Consider this job a bullet dodged.
MagicUnicorn
I’m the opposite. If my (admittedly more minimal than I like to admit) activism offends someone so strongly, I would rather they self-select out of working with me. I do not broadcast my views in places where that is not the focus (like at the office in general), but neither will I hide it (like at the office when colleagues are vocally celebrating the administration’s failure to return detained children to their parents). To me, these are principles worth taking flak for.
Anon
I prefer to be extremely private when it comes to my Internet profiles and would lock everything down to the extent possible, but my political views aren’t an extreme secret. You might want to be wary of working anywhere where your views and activism are a dealbreaker.
Anonymous
It’s actually a group you would expect to be very progressive (haha).
Torin
Not a fan of logo-bags but I actually like the “reverse” side of this. Not $429 like, but it’s pretty and black and white is very versatile for me.
Anonymous
Yet, it looks like a $429 diaper bag.

Late in the day, but do you all think I could wear the Biore Watery Essence sunscreen underneath professional makeup for a bridal party on Saturday? The makeup artist’s instructions said no moisturizer with SPF over 15 but 1. I don’t have a moisturizer with 15 spf and 2. we’re going to be outside starting at like 2pm and I don’t want to burn/be totally unprotected. But I also don’t want to ruin my friend’s wedding pictures.
Kk
Yep! She’s probably concerned about the super white cast that comes with more traditional physical zinc-based sunscreens. Something that goes on clear like watery essence or unseen sunscreen would be fine.
Marshmallow
You’ll be fine. I think flashback from sunscreen is really only a problem inside at night, and also… you don’t want to get a sunburn for both health reasons and because you’ll look sunburned in all the pictures after the first hour.
Anonymous
ALS screw her. She’s the makeup artist. It’s your health.
Anon
You could always bring an umbrella if you want to avoid sunscreen.
JS
Late reply, but only certain kinds of sunscreen cause flashback, but the MUA probably did not think most people are that into skincare to check all their ingredients.
“Chemical sunscreens do not cause any form of flashback. Sunblockers (AKA physical sunscreens) do.” Check out this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/MakeupAddiction/comments/2avfp7/rant_spreading_misinformation_about_spf_in_makeup/?st=J466IXWM&sh=8fd85523
