Gift Ideas: Personalized Flip-Flops for the Anti-Trump (or Bride or New Grad)

Call me naive, but I did not realize that you could make personalized flip flops that say things — so I was somewhat delighted when these showed up in my Facebook feed. (Actually, the ones that showed up were more vulgar, but I do try to keep this blog suitable for work.) If you've got a friend, family member, or loved one who may also be delighted by such things, these are only $24.95 — perfect for an upcoming beach vacation. For those of you who, perhaps, don't have such feelings about Trump, never fear — you can get practically anything put on flip flops these days via Etsy, including dated “Just Married” flip flops, “Class of 2020,” and sage sayings like, you know, “Don't worry be happy.”) Most of the flip-flops seem to be around $25, not including shipping. 1. Going to Louisville (KY) soon with a toddler – any recs for food or activities? My husband and I don’t drink bourbon and I don’t want to do anything related to horse racing, so the classic Kentucky activities are out, but we’re hoping to find good food and have some family fun. We have the science center on our list, since we have free admission there due to a local museum membership. Is brunch at the Brown Hotel nice? I enjoy an elegant brunch buffet even if the food isn’t gourmet, but my husband is wary it’s a tourist trap.

    1. Dad spent some time in Louisville, and he says there are some good places to eat downtown.

    2. The Brown Hotel is nice. I wouldn’t call it a tourist trap, but if you want an alternative, the Seelbach is also very beautiful and has a great brunch.

The Louisville Slugger Museum and the Muhammad Ali Center are great recommendations. If you have to pick one, go with the Slugger Museum.

    3. +1 to the Slugger Museum, it’s right across the street from the science museum! (Which I was going to recommend before seeing it was on your list.) Get brunch at Wild Egg.

    4. I also love Troll Pub Under the Bridge Restaurant. My kids love the giant troll out front and it’s a cool underground location.

And the Zappos outlet is in Louisville!

  2. Need to find one for a party this weekend. Anyone seen any good versions on Amazon lately?

      1. +1 Goodwill or a Buffalo Exchange if you have one near you. They may even have put them on a special rack.

    1. I had been dragging my heels about cleaning out my late mother’s closet, but what finally got me going was needing to retrieve her beloved “beautiful” Christmas sweater(s!) for a party next weekend! Agree that the real thing is much better!

  3. What’s your favourite Christmas album? Having friends over to decorate a Christmas tree and all my old favourites are feeling tired.

    1. Retro – Boney M
      Pop – TSwift
      Fun – Barenaked Ladies
      Beautiful – Sarah McLachlan
      Weirdly Amazing – Bob Dylan
Even more weirdly amazing – Scott Weiland (RIP)

    2. My tastes lean pop diva, so I love Kelly Clarkson’s album from a few years ago and the new Lea Michele one.

      1. Yes! And John and Rowlf the Dog’s version of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas just gets me every time!

        1. Same! My All-time favorite Christmas album.

Honestly, though, just pull up Pandora or Spotify. For a party – “Vince Guaraldi Christmas” in the search bar is perfect. :)

    3. Down Christmas Island – Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers
Either of the Christmas albums by Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Either of the Pentatonix Christmas albums (I prefer the 2014 “That’s Christmas to Me” but both are good)
If there are kids in the group, the Phineas & Ferb Christmas album is good.

The Northstar Orchestra also had a series of instrumental that are easy to listen to while doing other things.

Clancy Brother Christmas if you’re in the mood for folk.

The Three Tenors have “I’ll be hoe for Christmas” if you’re wanting more traditional. Pavaoratti, Placido Domino, Jose Carrerras, Marilyn Horne, Dionne Warwick plus more.

      1. I know we all have our own tastes, but I HATE Pentatonix with the heat of a nova. They ruin everything they touch.

        That feels much better.

    4. It may be because I have such fond memories of listening to them with my family when I was a kid, but I LOVE the manneheim steamroller Christmas albums. Sometimes a little synth-heavy :) but I like that they are mostly instrumental.

    5. Super-late here, but if you’re still reading check out the recent holiday albums by PJ Morton and Leslie Odom Jr.

  4. I have a newborn and a dog, and I live in the Pacific Northwest, where we’re in for 7 more months of rain. Does anyone have comfy, slip-on shoes I can use for walks around the neighborhood/quick errands that won’t get soaking wet? My default is Toms but they’re obviously completely inappropriate for the climate this time of year. But I don’t have patience with anything less comfortable or easy than that right now.

(I would like to do Rothys, but they don’t seem to fit my feet quite right – they hit some kind of nerve in my foot, even when sizing up.)

    1. LL Bean makes slip on bean boots (called the rubber moc). Not the most stylish option but I like them for my early morning dog walks when it’s rainy!

    2. I agree that Bogs could be an option. I’m a fan of Merrell slip on clogs with the furry lining, unless your feet are prone to overheating.

    3. I like the Sam Edelman rain booties. They are quick to slip on and more comfortable and easier to maneuver in than a traditional rain boot.

    4. Get a pair of Vessi sneakers! It’s a small Canadian company established in Vancouver. Their sneakers are super comfy and also waterproof. I’m on my second pair now. The first pair took me through weekend wear most of my pregnancy plus daily wear through my entire eight month maternity leave. They were still comfy for everyday wear in Disneyland this fall and I’m just retiring them now because the waterproofing has started to wear out. 100% recommend!

    1. Yeah, I agree. I am opposed to Trump but don’t need to see Trump-bashing flip flops promoted here.

      1. I have the Make America Kittens extension on Chrome so I can’t even see what’s in the photo.

    2. I agree completely. This is really disappointing for a website supposedly tailored for “professional” women.

  5. Does anyone have suggestions for truly airtight food storage containers?

This weekend, DH and I discovered pantry moths in our pantry. For the uninitiated, pantry moths eat flours, cereals, grains, dried fruit, dried peppers, nuts, etc. We had most of these foods stored in oxo “pop” containers and/or in ziplock freezer bags, and they were able to infiltrate both. They were even inside some (but not all) unopened packages of food.

    1. Can’t you just exterminate the moths? That seems easier than finding containers they can’t infiltrate.

      1. That’s way harder than you might think. A coworker of mine got pantry moths and despite working with a great exterminator, it took them many months to fully eradicate them. Apparently they are insidious and work their way into every nook and cranny and lay eggs. They are attracted to certain foods but can live off of almost anything. My coworker had to store every bit of food they could salvage (which wasn’t much) in airtight containers and then work with the exterminator to kill the moths.

OP, I am sorry about this. I don’t have suggestions on containers but do recommend you contact an exterminator who has experience with moths before you try to eradicate them on your own.

      2. We’re taking all the steps we can to get rid of them. We’ve thrown away half our food, and we’re wiping everything down with vinegar, and freezing any unopened food for a few days. We will also vacuum the surfaces and caulk any gaps we find.

We’ll talk about calling an exterminator. I want to get rid of these things quickly!

        1. Have you put out moth traps? They look like little tents with sticky insides. They will attract and kill any living moths and any that hatch over the next few months. I have found them really helpful.

    2. There may have been eggs in the food when you brought it home from the store, especially if you are buying in bulk. When we had issues with them, we would put bags of flour, etc in the freezer for a couple days before they went in the cabinet to kill any potential eggs. (Perhaps gross but they are edible). And we used traps in the cupboards. We didn’t bother trying to upgrade our storage.

      1. That’s a good idea. Once we’re ready to restock, I’ll try this once I’m ready to restock, in addition to better storage.

Our moths likely came in in a bag of dried peppers. I found it and threw it away this morning, along with almost everything else in our pantry.

    3. We battled those for almost two years. We would do all the things listed online and it would seem like they were gone, but as soon as the weather changed we would find them again. Eventually we got the house tented and fumigated for termites and the fumigation totally eliminated all of the moths.

    4. Not sure if you’ll see this so late, but last summer we moved into a house and right after we unpacked the kitchen realized the (original built in 1910) cabinets had come with pantry moths. Explains why we found a bag of flour in the freezer the owners forgot about. I despaired but we were able to get rid of them. This is what we did: took every single thing out of every single cabinet. Scrubbed everything inside and out with hot soapy water. The undersides of drawers, the holes where you can adjust the shelves, the back walls, everything. Then did a second scrub down with vinegar and peppermint essential oil. Put moth traps in, waited a few days, then put the food and everything else back in. I was sure that when the weather turned warm again this year they’d be back, but we haven’t seen once since. Good luck.

    5. Mason jars worked for me. I had a grain weevil infestation (they ate their way out of the heavy duty ziplock around a bag of flour). Threw out pretty much everything in the kitchen that could possibly be infested, put a few special items in the freezer, and started using large mason jars for everything new. Good luck!

    6. They didn’t infiltrate. They arrived in your food in egg form. Gross, I know, but it’s the truth.

  6. I need a gift for my SIL (it’s a gift exchange, so squarely on my shoulders). She lives in London. I don’t really know what she’s into day to day since we only see her twice a year. Also, she’s traveling right afterwards and so doesn’t want anything bulky. Help? Late 30’s professional, $50-$100. Open to a nice gift card for somewhere in London.

    1. Can you not ask your SO or sibling (depending on how she is an in-law to you) for input? I don’t understand the “squarely on your shoulders” aspect here…

        1. Yes – not secret, but we draw names. Also, DH has lived with me for longer than he has lived with her and is equally clueless.

      1. You’re not normally supposed to let people know who you drew for secret Santa…defeats the whole secret part.

    2. On the travel track – upgraded passport cover (maybe handmade/monogrammed), compression packing cubes, a set of luxurious travel tolietries, lightweight wrap cardigan for cold planes/trains, one of those Turtl neck wraps?

    3. Gift card to a nice restaurant or spa? TimeOut has gift vouchers for West End Shows too…

      1. I’m a little late, but you could do a gift certificate for a pedicure/manicure/some other treatment at the Cowshed. It is one of the things I miss about living in London. Their spas are such lovely little respites and the pedicures I used to get from there stayed on for forever without chipping. I still try to go whenever I am in London. There are a bunch of locations, so there should be one relatively easy for her to get to.

    4. Gift card to Reiss or LK Bennett? Nice leather gloves? Gift card to Sticks n’ Sushi? (yeah, it’s a chain, but rather a nice one! plus multiple locations)

    5. This is where I’m all things Cuyana. I love their makeup bags as a gift

  7. Do you think the musical Mean Girls is a good choice to take my 14 year old (freshman) niece? She is a smart reader type that loved Hamilton, and that is the only musical she has seen. I wanted to take her out to a day/night in the city – Dinner and a show.

And these tickets are so pricey! Does anyone know the best way to buy tickets? Are you forced to buy through these 3rd party Ticketmaster places? I’m in Chicago.

    1. Sorry, are you taking your niece out in Chicago? I see Dear Evan Hansen is playing there and it is really wonderful and pretty much aimed right at high schoolers.

      1. Agree that Dear Evan Hansen was good/amazing, but was also a really stressful watching experience. :/

        1. Can you guys tell me more?

My niece has had a lot of stress in her young life, and a parent with severe mental illness. I’m not sure whether a musical like this would be good for opening up topics for her, or stressful and upsetting? She is amazingly centered considering what she is dealing with, but has some anxiety.

But honestly, maybe Mean Girls isn’t great either…

          1. So the main character is a kid with anxiety who never quite fits in. The suicide of a classmate highlights just how alone a lot of kids feel and overall the message is positive (that these are common feelings and that a person might be less alone than they think). The downside is that the character gets caught in a lie that spirals out of control and causes a lot of pain for his mother and the family of his dead classmate (although it also brings them peace too). The main character graduates high school and finds some better balance after all the drama, so the message is overall very positive. The songs are amazing but it is tissue pack required play.

          2. Evan Hansen is a tear-jerker that deals with some extremely adult themes, despite its teenaged cast. I haven’t seen Mean Girls, but if it’s anything like the move, which I assume it is, it’s probably a much better choice for a fun aunt-niece day out.

          3. Yeah, I straight up ugly cried while seeing this. It was not pretty, and I was very glad I was able to go home after!

      2. Dear Evan Hansen is not currently playing in Chicago… It will be back here in summer 2020.

    2. I know for our theaters (Minneapolis) that use Ticketmaster, you can avoid the TM fees by going to the Box Office in person to purchase tickets. I would buy from TM or the Box Office directly before using any of the other ticket options.

Mean Girls is based on the movie, which was targeted squarely at your niece’s demographic, so it’s probably a good show for her. It will be a contrast to Hamilton, for sure, but helps to illustrate the diversity in musical theater.

    3. For discounted musical theater tickets in chicago, I use todaytix and Goldstar. Goldstar has had Mean Girls for 30% off – just wait a week or two for the special to come back. Travelzoo also occasionally has musical theater deals.

It’s not as flashy, but if you celebrate Christmas, what about A Christmas Carol at the Goodman theater? It’s a very theatrical production, and there are tons of deals for tickets right now on Goldstar and TravelZoo.

  8. I am now convinced I am being singled out and harassed by the CFO of our firm. Background: I am a non-equity partner at a small law firm. My entire practice is contingency based.
The CFO came by to inform me of a “policy” that I need to send all requests for assistance to the entire paralegal team, regardless of what it is. I asked some clarifying questions – basically do you mean everything and anything (including stuff paralegals don’t handle) and she literally asked me if I had a hearing problem. I was chastised for not following this “policy” and not billing out the time of the admin that helped me. But we don’t bill out admins’ time as a matter of course, I am not the billing attorney on my matters, and all my matters are contingency anyways. She was raising her voice at me and getting in my face (hovering over me while I was sitting in my desk chair in my office), so I stood up and as calmly as possible told her to back up, and asked her to leave my office. She did, and I closed the door. She tried to re-enter and I held it shut, and locked it. She pounded on it for a while but eventually went away. It was honestly scary.
I checked in with the head paralegal so I could actually understand the “policy,” and she has never heard of this “policy.” She also didn’t understand why I would be sending everything I needed help with to the paralegals instead of just asking a legal assistant or admin (duh). I also asked an equity partner about it, and the billing issues, and he was pretty angry I was being bothered about this and confirmed there is no such “policy” and there are no such billing issues.
What on earth do I do about this? Should I tell an equity partner more about the treatment that I suffered through? This is not the first time that the CFO has caused me trouble – I did not receive a travel charger for my laptop, and when I requested one she refused and called me entitled. So I went out and bought one myself. One of the equity partners (same one I went to talk to today) noticed I had an off-brand, non-firm issued charger and he asked me why, and was not pleased to hear why and issued me a check to pay for the charger and got me a better one from IT.

    1. Document everything. When you feel like you have a sufficient list of examples, very calmly discuss her behavior with whomever she answers to (managing partner?). “Karen has been behaving unprofessionally, to the point of physically attempting to force her way into my office through my closed door, and it’s affecting my work here. I don’t believe I’ve done anything to merit such treatment, and I would appreciate it if you looked into these issues.” If Karen is the managing partner’s girlfriend, of course, or there are other dynamics, consider whether to say anything at all. But if she’s just another human being? Absolutely stand up for yourself.

    2. This is insane. Obviously you report it to the equity partner immediately.

Karen physically intimidated me and tried to bang down the door to my office. She must go.
