Any tips for Secret Santa office gifts (for female, approx 45yo)? We have a limit of approx 15$.

A pretty mug with some tea or coffee
Chocolates or other holiday candy
Festive tea towels

Some people hate them, but I always like getting candles as gifts – I can’t use them up fast enough. Something with a nice but inoffensive scent. For $15, you could get a pretty one at Anthro (particularly if you wait for their inevitable black friday 20 or 30% off).
Otherwise, maybe a few sweet treats from Trader Joes, tied up with a bow?
rosie
I like the Trader Joe’s idea. They usually have some nice gift items — maybe a set of hand lotions and some kind of sweet — I remember one year they had an international chocolate bar flight boxed set. I’ve heard that they have a nice olive wood cutting board this year.
Anon
I LOVE that olive wood cutting board and am considering getting it! It’s really gorgeous and looks like far more than a $10 present.

+1 – the olive wood cutting board and nesting bowls are REALLY pretty. That and the olive oils/honeys would be a great gift.

Fancy hot cocoa mix with some marshmallows and biscotti? Super soft, whimsical socks and a couple of face masks? Bean soup or chili mix, cornbread mix, and an exotic hotsauce? Popping corn, a shaker of white cheddar seasoning, and a book or card came? An adult (as in grown-up, not X-rated) coloring book and set of colored pencils? A beautiful tea cup from your local Asian grocer and some tea?
Anonymous
Cost Plus World Market has a bunch of fun consumables and some lotions/masks.

A nice succulent in a pot?
Festive tea towel?

Spare phone charger, or charging brick or water bottle (bonus if it’s one of those that lets you track how much you’re drinking). Depending on workplace, bottle of alcohol.
Anon
Bottle of wine and scratch off lottery tickets

Bottle of Philosophy (shampoo/shower gel /bubble bath). They have a bunch of holiday scents in addition to the usual ones. Ulta has them on sale for $12 this week. They are usually $18. I also see them at Marshalls or TjMaxx for $12.

Thank you all for the tips!

Help dress me! What would you wear to look fashionably business casual in San Francisco, where I will be spending a couple days per month with a new job. I’m early 30s, my current business casual and casual wear err towards Brooks Brothers and preppy Banana Republic, which feels off for this setting, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to have a few cool outfits. Office is casual, and I’m looking for pants outfits for the winter and spring, and pieces that will travel well. I’m a tall size 16ish, so I’d just buy several things off Everlane and be done with it, but I’m worried their sizing will be too small/short.
Mom
Where are you now? You are probably overthinking things and you’re fine. You should probably wait and see what folks are wearing once you’ve started. Meanwhile, review what you already own and see if you can recombine things into new outfits.

I’m in the midwest (and not Chicago), and for the past few years have worked remote when I’m not in the field with clients, so my wardrobe definitely needs a refresh. I feel like I dress decently here, but I think I’m imagining a sleeker look? I’ve been through it and don’t really have the right items in my wardrobe, unfortunately. Well, I do have one pair of cool and flattering tie-waist pants, but they’re thick/heavy/bulky to travel with.

I love a good black wool turtleneck sweater, which should work into your style pretty well regardless of setting. I layer a shirt underneath to avoid any itching and to prolong wear between wanting to clean or fluff in the dryer. IIRC, Banana has some good ones on offer now. I’d wear with darker baby-bootcut jeans (gap? their curvy cut works for me) over some sort of low or mid-heeled boot. And a utility jacket or trench if needed. I also like the AT Loft curvy bootcut cords b/c they give you some color options (not sure how SF does corduroy, but I run cold and hate the damp/cold combo, so cords are a win for me but YMMV).
anne-on
70% of my wardrobe is Brooks Brothers/classic prep, but I LOVE a funky blazer as a topper to mix things up. I now have this in both black and pink and love it!

Period undies
Does anyone have personal experience with Thinx, Knix, or Dear Kate? Or any other period undies? I like the concept but have never owned any myself.
Anon
I have Thinx and was skeptical at first but they have become essential for me at night. I hate pads. I can’t bring myself to get up in the middle of the night to change a tampon. I even travel with them now. Machine washable, never gross.
Anonymous
I have Thinx, and like them for backup or spotting days at the beginning or end of my period. They’re great, I have no concerns wearing white pants. I’ve had them for a couple of years, wash on cold and hang dry, and they are still effective. They are thicker than regular undies, if you care about VPL. They also have less stretch than regular undies, which I only noticed when I gained weight over the past year.
Anon
I use thinx as backup for my diva cup and on days when I may or may not bleed, because I have a really heavy and irregular cycle. I like them, and am happy to answer any questions you have.
Anon
I use Thinx and love them. The new version, the Air (I think that’s what they’re called), are particularly nice and breathable and lightweight. I also like the cotton ones, but they are definitely heavier. I think the period protection is comparable on both.
Anonymous
I have Thinx instead of panty liners and like them a lot! I tend to pretty heavy periods (thanks fibroids!) so a back up for tampons is really helpful. If you tend to really heavy flow, there may be break through, for example, over night, but they really help. I find them MUCH more comfortable than a liner and really appreciate that they are less wasteful, especially because I’m already team tampon.
I usually hang dry (note, they take a while because of their absorbent properties), but have machine dried them in a pinch. They have held up pretty well, but I have had to fix the stitching a couple of times over the past two years.
They usually do a sale for Black Friday.
Anonymous
I got Thinx at the last Nordstrom sale (Anniversary thingy maybe?) and I prefer my Dear Kates. I think Kat did a whole roundup on period undies.
Not a Fun Guy
I have one pair of Thinx and love them, although I haven’t purchased more. I really like not having to think about changing a tampon/pad all day.
Anon
I’ve bought Thinx, and they work pretty well at catching leaks. I agree with 5:15 Anon that they have less stretch than regular undies — and consequently I found them to dig in uncomfortably at some points. When used as the sole means of protection, I also found them to have a very strong smell by the afternoon — and ended up throwing them in the trash and switching to another option midway through the day.
Softdisk (disposable menstrual cup) has been my absolute favorite discovery.

It’s probably too late in the day – but please tell me that I can drop this off of my very long list of things to do: my husband and I are attending Thanksgiving at his parents’ house this year. We (I, because husband doesn’t cook) are tasked with bringing several vegetable sides. I’m totally cool with cooking and bringing the sides, but I realized a couple of days ago (too late for delivery) that we don’t really have serving dishes. I have a big glass casserole dish, and then we standard dinner plates and bowls that are pretty. Is that ok? Or can I bring things in tupperware and have the in-laws transfer them to a prettier serving dish? I was going to try to run out to Crate & Barrel across town in traffic to buy serving dishes, but I’m just realizing that’s probably bananas and not necessary? Thoughts? In California, if geography matters for these sorts of things. TIA!
Anonymous
I would definitely bring them on Tupperware, say you were worried about anything else breaking in the car, and shift them into your in-laws’ serving containers if they want you to. If you like them, give them a heads up what you are bringing so they have serving dishes and spoons already set aside.
anon
I would ask the hosts. I think whether you need to bring presentable serving dishes depends entirely on their expectations. Other ideas to acquire them in case the store is closer: Bed, Bath & Beyond, Pottery Barn, Anthro, Marshall’s, Home Goods, some fancy grocery stores.
Anonymous
+1 to this — it really depends what Thanksgiving at their house is like. Maybe you could ask your husband to run that errand, since you’re the one cooking the veggies?
Anon
Yes and right now you can get very presentable and affordable serving dishes at Walmart or Target….i would use the foil pans from Costco knowing that I’m not taking them home…and my dish can easily be reheated at the hosts house in the foil pan…
Anon
Not necessary. Your sides will taste great in pretty dishes or foil. Anyone having issue with that is being a choosy beggar. Happy Thanksgiving!
nuqotw
I think it’s fine. I would not worry about serving dishes at all.
The original Scarlett
I think if you care about the serving pieces, then you don’t ask people to bring things – control it or don’t (ie., I’d skip that errand and use what you have. I’d also not plan on getting it back)

Kat, I love this Kate Spade bag! I went with Myrna up to Woodbury Common upstate 2 weeks ago and got one somewhat like this one. If anyone in the HIVE lives upstate from Manhattan, I would go to Woodbury Common, which is a mall on the way to Albany, but not that far. Myrna drove, so I was not paying to much attention, but it was about an hour or 2 from Manhattan. Myrna got a lot of designer clothes and accessories, but I limited myself to Leather accessories that the manageing partner does NOT cover. Dad is pleased that I am being fruegal now that L&T has moved out to Weework. FOOEY on Weework! Dad says they are an unconventionally run company, and he is probably right as he has an MBA degree, so he knows.
