Dinner ideas
My husband sometimes has to work late and we always try to eat together but its lately more difficult. Looking for ideas for something I can make that would reheat well without a microwave – stuff at room temp or that reheats on stove ideal. We eat everything but tend to be more veggie heavy during the week so recipes without meat/seafood appreciated. No slow cooker.

My husband has been trying to lose some weight and lower his blood pressure, so we’ve been eating more vegetarian dinners lately. One of my favorite tricks is basically stuff in bowls, so we’ll prepare several things that can be combined (in a bowl): quinoa dressed with olive oil, lemon, and chopped herbs; lentils; quick-pickled beets; sauteed greens; avocados; toasted walnuts or pumpkin seeds; sliced radishes; etc. You get the idea. Some things are made in batches and used over a few lunches and dinners, others are made for one meal. It’s easy to pull together into a quick meal, it’s usually stuff that can safely hold at room temp and wouldn’t need reheating, and anything that does need reheating can go on the stove.

Have you considered bento boxes? Those are specifically meant to be eaten at room temperature. Dinner salads are also a good option. One of my favorites is mixed greens (lettuce plus spinach and arugula is nice), chopped red onion, canned corn, canned dark red kidney beans, blue cheese crumbles, and rotisserie chicken with a balsamic vinaigrette (mix 1/2 tbsp Dijon mustard and one small crushed clove of garlic into 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar; sprinkle in kosher salt and fresh ground pepper; whisk in 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil). Buffalo chicken salad is good too (put cooked chicken in a sauce pan; add Pete’s Buffalo sauce just to cover; warm over low heat; toss with romaine lettuce, chopped onion, chopped celery, and chunky blue cheese dressing). Or Greek chicken salad (romaine, chopped pepperoccini, feta, kalamata olives, cucumber, tomatoes, tossed with vinaigrette — use recipe above but replace balsamic vinegar with 1tbsp each of lemon juice and red wine vinegar).

Ugh, wrote a longish reply but it’s disappeared. Short version – -consider looking at bento recipes (meant to be eaten room temperature) and dinner salads.

Would you be open to slow cooker meals?

Any summer playlist recommendations? So far I’m liking:
“I Know There’s Gonna Be Good Times” by Jamie xx
“Gorgeous,” by X Ambassadors
“I’m in Love With My Life” by PHASES
“Better In The Morning” Little Boots
“Lean On” by Major Lazer
century ride
trap queen for life!
Susie
Wow I’m either getting old or am just tragically unhip, I’ve never even heard of a single one of these artists.

Me neither!
espresso bean
I’m not hip, I can assure you. I am also not young! All the credit goes to Spotify. I just listen to their Viral 50 playlist every week and pick the songs I like.
platinomad
Mark my words, “Classic Man” by Jidenna will be the song of summer (2015).

So this morning I woke up feeling nauseous and finally got the nerve to take a pregnancy test. It was positive! I am actually shocked – we have been “trying” for 3 weeks, and my period has always been irregular, so I assumed it would take AWHILE for this. I called my doctor, but the receptionist scheduled me for mid august and said they don’t see people before 8 weeks. Is that normal? I feel like I need to get reassurance that the test is right before that. I plan to take another one tomorrow, but what if I am getting false positives or just doing the test wrong?
Clementine
WOO HOO! False positives are very uncommon, but in my experience- even after a few ultrasounds and doctor’s visits, I’m still not totally sure I believe it.
My doctor also didn’t see people as a rule until after 8 weeks, but I had an issue come up before that mark and was able to call and talk to a nurse about my concerns.
meme
There are no false positive pregnancy tests. Your body is producing HCG for sure. Could turn out eventually to be a blighted ovum or chemical pregnancy but it’s too early now to see anything useful on an ultrasound. Eight weeks for a first OB visit is normal. Congratulations!
Blonde Lawyer
Congrats. I’ve never had a kid but if I ended up pregnant I would need to be seen sooner to adjust medications that I am taking for other medical conditions. I don’t know if I would see my prescribing doc for those meds to make sure they were pregnancy friendly or if I would need to talk to an OB for that. Did you have a pre-trying appointment to go over that kind of stuff? If not, that might be something to follow up about if it applies to you.
AIMS
Totally normal. Same thing happened to me. I was worried that I imagined it up until I saw the sonogram at the first visit. Doctor confirmed that there are false negatives but not false positives (with exceptions for certain fertility drugs). Congrats!
JJ
Wait. Did I miss that you’re pregnant AIMS? Congrats!
Cat
I know! I feel like a real life friend just slyly slipped me the news! Congrats :)
AIMS
Haha, thanks guys! I’m weird about announcements, I guess – it feels so formal! But yes, about halfway along the journey. Very excited and a whole lot nervous :)
TO Lawyer
Congratulations!!
January
Oh my gosh! Yes, congrats!
AEK
Congratulations AIMS! (And OP, of course, just so early there)
Coach Laura
Congratulations AIMS!

Thanks all!

Thanks. Its funny how in the movies as soon as anyone gets a positive test she heads straight to the doctors’ office. Not like that in the real world…
anon for this
If you worked for your parents, would you call them by their first name or Mom/Dad? My friend is having this issue right now and comes from a conservative culture where that is absolutely not appropriate.
Anon
I would call them whatever other people in the office called them/what I would call them if we weren’t related. So Susan, or Mr. Smith, or whatever. Not Mom/Dad.
Anonymous
What would you say for a high school kid working at their parents company?
Mpls
I’d say the same. Or, if uncomfortable with a first name, using an honorific (Mr. Smith, Ms. Jones). Professional (vs not social) place should use professional norms, which for anyone else is usually a first name.
WJM-TV
I’ve only worked along side my mother, and I called her Mom. It was a family business, and several sets of parents/children worked along side each other.
Wildkitten
It would be really really hard for me to call my mom anything but mom.
Anon
Right?! Calling your parents by Mr._____ or their first names just because you work for them seems so bizarre.
Snickety
We have a couple of these situations at my office. In each case, the employee refers to the parent by first name when talking to someone else about them, ie “let me check with Jane” not “let me check with my mom.” That seems appropriate to me. I’ve never heard either of them address their mom/dad by first name when talking to them directly. I suspect they avoid using either mom/dad or first name when talking to their parent at the office.
CountC
Shoot, I call them by their first names half the time anyway and I don’t work for them! I wouldn’t have a problem with this. Calling my parents mom/dad in a work situation would be very weird to me, but everyone is different!

I am being redirected to theappstore again ugh. I have lost hope that this will ever be fixed.

Seriously, why not just install Adblock?

It’s on phones that people are having this problem. Can you adblock on phones?
Junior Lawyer
Today I sent a harmless email regarding status of a file to another (male and senior) lawyer and the response suggested he thought I was stupid, lazy and should not be practicing this area of law because I have a kid and should presumably practice some other “easier” area of law. I am very tired of the sexism in this profession which has gotten so much worse since I returned from maternity leave. Anyone have any words of advice?
Anonymous
Did he say explicitly that you should not be in this area because you have a kid? If so that is the kind if thing that is reportable to HR and if you are at a halfway decent firm there will be serious consequences to him. There is systemic unspoken bias in almost all large firms but voicing those things explicitly is no longer allowed. If his response just implied that, can you share more about what he said? It’s hard to answer without knowing what was said and how inappropriate it was. And yes there is a ton of sexism and anti-working mother bias in the legal profession. It stinks.
Plague carrier
He said “you have a kid and should consider whether or not you should be doing this anymore. It’s in an email. And this is a lawyer from another firm.
Gail the Goldfish
Does he have children? If yes, I would totally send the same response back. Some people are just assholes.
ace
Wow, that guy sucks. If you are working with other people on this case, this is something they need to know about.
Wildkitten
You could also send it to HR at his own law firm as a heads up that he is probably engaging in the same discrimination over there. Or you can just be grateful that you’re not as ignorant and bigoted as he is, and prove him wrong.
Lilypad
Haters gonna hate. If he was your boss I would not be so flip, but he’s just some asshole opposing (or co-?) counsel. Don’t let his douchbaggery get to you. I would probably write a mean-spirited response, and then delete without sending. Or if its really bad, send it to AboveTheLaw and let the trolls have at him.
CountC
Bwahaha, I love the ATL suggestion.
