I don't really know how I feel about hoop earrings anymore, because I now strongly associate them with those NRA ads with Dana Loesch — but these black gold hoops with black diamonds are significantly different, and I do like them. They're a thread-through style — meaning no posts poking into your neck when you wear them — and they're less than an inch in diameter (0.71″, to be exact), which is a pretty small, cute size. I like these as very easy, everyday earrings that are a little bit blingy, but also check out the brand's whole line, because the're all very minimalist but also very cool. I think these would be great for someone's gift list, too! They're $700 at Neiman Marcus. Reckless Mini “Hooked on Hoops” 14K Black Gold Earrings with Black Diamonds Two more affordable options ($146, $199) are both available at Etsy. I was like, hmm, these would be a cute gift for my daughter.
Then I saw the price.

Same. I’m sure it is quality jewelry, but to most eyes it’s going to look like plastic due to the unusual nature of the coloring and the lack of sparkle. Also, I’m going to say it if no one else will. Black and brown diamonds are trash and the result of marketing. Granted so are real diamonds, but at least they are pretty and have 100s of yrs of jewelry making value add. – I cringe when I see “chocolate diamonds” advertised that unpolished should go on a drill bit.

Gorgeous.

Am I the only one who finds it really hard to visualize earrings without a picture of them on an ear? I know Kat is working with what’s available on the Neiman Marcus site, but I wish they had put up another picture.
In-House in Houston
100%! I wish they had a photo of a model wearing them!!

Not only you! I can’t really imagine what they look like on!
Cat
Am I the only one who can’t wear this style of earring at all? They inevitably worm their way “backwards” which is self perpetuating — the more they’re out of balance, the more they try to extract themselves! Using those little rubber stoppers SHOULD work but it’s such a PITA to work them all the way up to the top of the earring, not to mention off again, that I can’t be bothered….

IDK but I am team studs all the way. In theory I’m not, but it’s just more practical.
Pompom
Try making a vertical slice all the way through the rubber cylinder-y-thingy, so it’s not actually a closed circle. It will probably retain its shape and grip onto the earring, but you can put it on at any height like it is a cuff.

GENIUS

such a good idea!!! Now to track down the rubber thingies….

I posted before about starting an IVF cycle. Now it looks like it might be delayed because my estrogen is too high (I’m guessing because of the birth control I was on). I’m having a really hard time dealing with the uncertainty of this. I was so mentally ready to get started even though I’m also really anxious about it. Anyone have any words of advice ?

I was so unprepared to deal with the stress of infertility. I could not control the process by working harder, studying more nor could I anticipate and avoid the many things that could go wrong. What helped me was to accept that going through infertility treatments is sort of like going through the stages of grief or a breakup. All I could do was let time pass because there was nothing constructive I could do to improve the outcomes or speed up the process. Also, a counselor promised me that EVERY single person she knew from her old NYC infertility support group (including Connie Chung) felt better on the other side. Having that woman emphatically tell me I would recover emotionally was very powerful because I truly wondered. Hang in there and good luck to you.

I understand the disappointment. I had an ectopic pregnancy with my last and final IUI cycle. I was mentally prepared to start IVF and had to wait 3 months before I could start. The break ended up being a blessing, my husband and I went away for a long, blissful weekend and overindulged. I also feel recharged from not overanalyzing everything going on in my body.
I just started IVF this month and I think it’s important to TRY and put positive spins on things. Maybe the delay means you can enjoy holiday merriment a bit more? I know people being overly positive can be annoying but I would try to find a bright side. IVF is a significant investment for your body, time and wallet. You want conditions to be perfect.
Sending you fertile vibes.
Job Change
I will be going to a very small and new litigation boutique from biglaw after five years. Are there anything I can do to prepare for the change? I’m quite nervous about it and would appreciate any advice you have.
January
I moved to a tiny boutique after five years in biglaw (approximately same practice area). It’s been an adjustment. After six months, I am comfortable saying that it’s not better or worse, just different. Big firms have more resources — in-house copy center, paralegals, more staff — and you will probably find it disorienting at first not to have these resources at your fingertips. I’m not sure that there’s much you can do to prepare for that, per se, but I was thrown by this when I changed jobs. Also, if you have materials that you created (e.g., outlines related to specific areas of the law but not to a specific case), try to take those with you.
Ellen
I never worked in BigLaw, so can’t compare, but I can tell you that, as a partner in a small boutique firm like January, we do many things ourself. For example, I do all of my own typing, and copying, and the onley thing I have my secretary, Lynn do is to assemble and send out express mail and courier packages, b/c I do not like to deal with the guys who come to pick them up for delivery. She is much more forceful then me, and they do not stare at her the way they did at me when I had to deal with them. I also got tired of being asked out by those guys. Anyway, there are good things about boutiques that you should know about. First, you have less people telling you what to do — I only listen to the manageing partner, and also you have more autonomy to make decisions and run with them, like I do. Finally, I bill whatever I want, and the manageing partner does NOT reduce my billing, but justs adds an uplift for reviewing them. All that helps me meet my monthly quota and assure’s my bonus at the end of the year! So I hope you enjoy your boutique like I do mine, and feel free to ask if you have any other questions. We here at the HIVE are here for each other!!!!! YAY!!!!

I also moved to a small boutique after 3 years in Biglaw (same practice area as well). I’m three years in now, and it was an adjustment for the first year or so, but now I love it. Agree with January about the fewer resources and trying to take some of your resources with you. You should also be prepared for much less structure regarding admin issues. I didn’t learn until like a year in that my firm would pay my bar dues because, well, everyone who worked there already knew that and they didn’t think to communicate it to new people!
On the plus side, I learned how to be more involved in the business side of the firm, and I love it. For the first time was expected to do things like give price estimates for a project, decide how to scope/structure/pitch projects, and put together an engagement letter. There was a learning curve to that, and I’m not sure how you’d prepare for it, but I caught on pretty quick. Not sure if this is universally true, but I now have a strong say in new hiring decisions (along with everyone else here) and decisions about things like what charities we decide to support, what subscriptions and technology we have, etc. I also have more direct interaction with clients than I ever did at a big firm, which is great too.
Immigration
Is there a wiki somewhere on immigration and immigrant visas vs other visas? Not looking for politics, just trying to understand.
Among my friends’ parents are a lot of people grew up near military bases and married a US person (often military but sometimes a DOD employee) and came to the US that way. Their parents come and go (and have not wanted to stay permanently). Kids (my friends) are all citizens. One parent became a citizen in case something happened to the dad and then immediately got put on a grand jury (surprise!).
In my city, most Latinos are Puerto Rican, so already citizens (and most people know that). And many local industries would break down without legal and illegal migrants.
Finally, it annoys me to no end as a parent how hard it is to hire child care helpers on the books (and carry workers comp on them) not b/c they are in the country illegally but b/c no one wants to pay taxes. The minute I say I HAVE to pay them on the books, no one is interested. (And this if for $20/hour).

Cheap sedentary reminder?
I’m looking for a simple, cheap, silent timer with a flashing or glowing light, to use as a sedentary reminder. I’m in a cube so it must be quiet- and I like my Skagen watch, and only need the reminder at my desk, so I’m not looking for a Fitbit or watch- ideally something less than 20$. Ideas?

StrongerU or Nutritionist? Any sales?
Does StrongerU ever go on sale? I found older threads where people were talking nutritionist and/or StrongerU. Curious how people followed it up — I feel like learning about macros has totally confused me, especially since MFP sets carbs at 50% by default.
