I gave little kits like this for Christmas last year (the best of beauty one to my SIL and for a secret Santa, and the lipsticks one to my work friends), and they were a huge hit. I will be doing something like that again this year.

Along the lines of travel sizes – one of the things that I just haven’t been able to find a product I like in a travel size is hairspray. I probably could have gotten away with not checking a bag this past weekend except that I couldn’t get my toiletries together. Just ridiculous. Anybody know of a great hairspray that comes in travel size?

I always find elnett in travel size at most pharmacies (cvs, walgreens, etc.)
Sydney Bristow
This is what I use. Look for the gold can.

I don’t have a particular brand rec, but Bed Bath and Beyond has the largest selection of travel-sized toiletries of anywhere I’ve ever seen – if you can’t find something there, not sure it exists!

Kerastase and Oribe both come in travel sizes
Anonymous
I use the Oribe hairspray and the product itself is fantastic, so highly recommend if that size works for you. My beef though, is that even though it’s “travel size” in the sense that it is TSA-compliant, it is still huge, as are so many other “travel size” products. I don’t need two month’s worth of product, I need a week max. When every “travel size” container is 3oz, I can’t fit everything I need into the 1qt bag.
Anonymous
I personally don’t feel that 3 oz containers are huge, just that TSA rules are way too restrictive but otherwise I agree

Also, I don’t want to sound negative but… A quick Sephora search confirms that pretty much every hairspray comes in a travel size.

The hairspray I use doesn’t come in travel size. It’s not one you could buy at Sephora. But thanks, really, for the sn@rk.
Anonymous
How was that snarky? But sure, you are welcome.
Wildkitten
I don’t think that’s snark, I think she’s just saying you might have to order it online from Sephora. I don’t think they carry all their travel sizes in the brick and mortar stores. But since your brand isn’t available and most brands, you can also just ask people what hairspray they like and probably find it in travel on the Sephora website.

I love the dry bar hairsprays and they come in travel size at sephora. I am personally partial to triple sec and less frequent hair washing lol.
NOLA
I saw a couple possibilities on the Sephora website so I guess I should try that rather than Target. The dry bar looked like a possibility. Unfortunately, because I work out so much, I generally wash my hair twice a day, so it’s like my scalp has come to expect more frequent washing. I also have thin, fine hair that won’t look good with less frequent hair washing.

Both of Aveda’s hair sprays come in travel size. I prefer the light hold but they have a strong hold, too.

Why are there so few comments these days?
I have a funny little question for the lawyers here. Do you refer to yourself as a lawyer or as an attorney? What about most of the people around you? What do you think about the two terms?
This is totally just for fun, but I am interested in people’s answers!
anon
I can’t really articulate why I do it this way (and didn’t realize the difference until I just thought about it now), but when someone asks what I do I say I am a lawyer. However, when making phone calls etc., I say “this is Anon, an attorney with COMPANY”
lawyer/atty
I do the same thing. Socially, I say “lawyer” because it seems less stiff. In business situations, though, I’ll say “attorney.”
Ellen
Yay! Coffee Break! I love coffee break and this p’oll! Actually, I refer to myself not as an attorney or a lawyer, per se, but as “an attorney at law”. YAY!!! I am an attorney at law, duly admitted to the court’s of the State of New York, includeing the Federal District court for the Southern District of New York and the US Court of Appeal’s for the Second Circuit. I have NOT argued any cases in Federal Court, yet, but hope to soon. The manageing partner asked me if I would like to be admitted to the US Supreme Court bar, but it costs a lot of money and he would have to move to admit me. He says he has never argued a case there, so I do NOT think I would either, unless I move to a BIG firm where they need femeale litiegation partner’s. YAY!!!!

A lawyer went to law school, an attorney is licensed and in practice. I’m a lawyer, but I wouldn’t call myself an attorney (I don’t have a practice where I represent clients).
anon
At least in my area, if you just went to law school but did not pass a bar and get sworn in, you would not call yourself a lawyer. Here, people who are not licensed but graduated law school just use J.D after their name.
Anonymous
I don’t disagree – just that “attorney” has more of emphasis on whether you are actually licensed to practice, as opposed to just having studied. Which may fall inline with the use of “lawyer” in social conversation vs “attorney” in business conversations. Lawyer indicates you’ve been to law school (and may or may not have passed the bar somewhere), but attorney indicates you are actively in practice, accepting clients and licensed to do the work of a legal practitioner.
For example, I went to law school, passed the bar, am current on my licensing fees, but don’t practice. So, I would tend to call myself a lawyer, but not an attorney.
Anonymous
When I was a certified law student working for the DA, a defense attorney told me that I could call myself an attorney since I was representing the state. Now, none of us students actually called ourselves attorneys for real, but I agree that attorney implies practice and representation.
Traditionalist
I say I’m an attorney because I’m from the South and people routinely make fun of the way I say lawyer.
Anon
laaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwww-yer :)

Yes, exactly. :)

I say attorney in professional settings or when meeting new people socially. I say lawyer if I’m being self-deprecating, having a bad week, or telling a lawyer joke.
“Attorney” just strikes me as being more formal and more respected by lay people. “Lawyer” makes me think of ambulance chasing and other hi-jinks.
Anonymous
I agree that “attorney” sounds more formal and respected by lay people, and that’s why I use it. I’m 30 but still get mistaken for an undergrad, so I try to go with the more serious sounding one. I’m afraid if I said “lawyer” they might think they misheard and that I said I’m studying to be a lawyer.
CountC
This is exactly what I do and for pretty much the same reasons. I have a little twist because while I am an attorney (licensed and active), I do not work as an attorney for my company. They hire attorneys for my job, but we aren’t part of the legal department. So, perhaps snobbily, I say that I am an attorney and a ______________. I am both!
Must be Tuesday
I usually say attorney.
Plague carrier
Lawyer. Sometimes barrister.
Bonnie
Attorney but more often use my more specific job title.
I think people have been having trouble posting and comments aren’t getting emailed even if you subscribe.
SH
I say attorney, but I work with people who have gone to law school abroad (where it’s an undergrad degree) and aren’t licensed and don’t have the same ethical rules that I do.

Seriously re: the comments. For awhile I thought it was because the s i t e was broken, but now it seems to be working, so I don’t know what the deal is!
Emily
Nothing to talk about anymore?
This
Yes, pretty much this. Even this conversation about lawyer vs attorney has happened at least twice in lengthy detail.

Ha. I think last time my response had something to do with the Star Jones SNL skits – I can’t hear “I’m a lawyer!” without thinking of Tracey Morgan in drag.

Is anyone other than me obsessed with travel-sized beauty products? I’ve subscribed to birchbox for a couple years now. It makes me want to travel more!
Sydney Bristow
I got a Birchbox subscription for a few months as a gift and have barely used any of it. I think I’m too set in my product ways. The only thing that I liked well enough to want to take on vacation instead of my normal stuff was a bodywash sample that I wound up using at home. It never made it to my travel bag.
Emily
I actually dislike them a lot. Unless it’s a sample of a new product that turns out to be awesome. I love my large size products and most travel size aren’t that great unless it’s a sample of something awesome (hello dauphin! hello Estee Lauder small sizes!)
LilyS
I love them! I use travelling as an excuse to buy minis of hair and body products that I can’t justify the cost of normally (Aussie formula haircare, for example).
lsw
I am!!! I love, love LOVE trying out different things, so Birchbox is perfect for me. I really look forward to it every month. Like a mini Christmas.
Snickety
My doctor once gave me a hard time for saying “attorney.” He said only people straight out of law school say they are attorneys (I’m 20+ years out). Lawyer sounds “old boy” to me.
Plague carrier
I anticipate someone will make a law society complaint against me over a file I handled over two years ago. Nothing has happened yet. Any thoughts from anyone who has been through this? Just kinda hard waiting knowing the complaint could come tomorrow or three years from now over a file that I believe I acted appropriately on and I appeared on so long ago.
padi
I have no real advice except to say that it is out of your control.
I practice in an area where it is “normal” for attorneys to be accused of unethical behaviors that allegedly occurred 10+ years before. I was in an office where all of the partners and some of the associates were accused of doing bad things as part of the other side’s litigation strategy. The allegations were groundless but it was considered standard operating procedure.
I am approaching the point where being deposed is a matter of when, not if. I know I can’t control it and I know it won’t be fun but I look forward to having a battle story to tell other lawyers.
Deal Alert?
I know there’s been some discussion on this in a past thread, but I can’t seem to find it. Can anyone recommend a website or online service that will notify me when certain items go on sale? I’m currently stalking an Ann Taylor dress for my rehearsal dinner and it would be far more productive if I could get an automated notice when it’s reduced rather than remembering to visit Ann Taylor every day (and the inevitable window browsing that follows….)
AIMS
Try ShoppingNotes. I’m not sure how it works with “extra” discounts though, so for AT I’d also sign up for their promotional emails. You should be able to limit the frequency and this way if they have one of those “50% off all dresses” promos but the item isn’t actually “on sale,” you should still be able to catch it.
Lobbyist
ShopItToMe — you put in your size, the brands you like and how often you want to get emails and you get notifications when those items are on sale.
