Our daily TPS reports suggest one piece of work-appropriate attire in a range of prices. We haven't featured a designer shoe for a while here, and this Choo is definitely splurge-worthy. We like that the cutouts give it interest and, let's face it, a bit of sex appeal, while also raising the vamp and making the shoe easier to walk in. We like the mix of leather finishes — the patent on the shoe and heel, and the snake print on the top. As always, we love the walkable 2.5″ heel. Lovely. They are a splurge, however: $665 at Saks, available for pre-order in sizes 5.5 through 11. If you've recently seen a great work piece you'd like to recommend to the readers, please e-mail editor@corporette.com with “TPS” in the subject line. Oh if only I could splurge!

Beautiful! But today I wince just to look at them. How do others handle the following? Last week I wore a new pair of shoes (no hose – here in Texas it was still 80 degrees) and at the end of the day had giant bloody holes rubbed on the inside of each heel. (Bandaids just don’t stay in place and I had a lot of walking to do that day.) I took the shoes to the Shoe Hospital and the man recommended these oblong cushioned pads that stick inside the heel of the shoe. He also just mashed down the heel counter in a way that I’d have been afraid to do and that definitely made the back more rounded. But with my currently scabbed heels, I can’t tell if this has solved the problem.
Does this happen to anyone else? What do you do? Do those pads work? And, are there any early warning signs that would keep me from buying shoes that will wound me? It’s not every shoe that has this problem, and these were good ones – $150 Calvin Kleins.

I swear by new skin- every time I wear a new pair of shoes, I brush it all over my heels and edges of toes, where ever they might possibly rub.
Also, don’t wear a new pair of shoes without hose on an 80 degree day when you have a lot of walking to do! That’s setting yourself up for blisters. Try a new pair on a day when you’ll be mostly sitting, so you can deal with hot spots before they become giant bloody holes.

If you don’t like wearing stockings or tights with your shoes generally, I recommend at least breaking them in this way. Put on stockings or tights and then just spend a few hours walking around your house doing chores or running some errands – it’ll help to break them in and soften the insides and the stockings will protect your feet.
J
Liquid bandage products are absolutely amazing for this purpose. It provides extra protection and stays put.
Kate
My thoughts – yes, the heel pads work but make sure you position them so they don’t relocate the problem. The other thing you can try is body glide – a silicon based lubricant that comes in an anti-perspirant type container. Runners/Triathletes use it for hot spots on feet/legs/etc when exercising. It holds up well under sweaty conditions. Your local running store will definitely have it and a large chain sporting goods store might have it.
SPS
If an emergency requires the use of band aids, get the old school, fabric kind. They stay in place much, much better (as in, they actually stay in place).
DLS
I like to use body glide on my feet when I am breaking in a new pair of shoes…it sounds weird, but since I started using it, I never get blisters. You can pick it up at most sporting goods stores as it is what long distance runners use to prevent chafing.
KZ
I use the heel pads in basically every pair of shoes I own (I apparently have strange shaped feet that will rub in everything); they work pretty well, though some brands are much better at staying in place than others–avoid the cheap drugstore brands.
Also, I’ve use moleskin before when breaking in new shoes–just stick it on when you notice a spot starting to rub.

Nearly all my shoes hit me in a bad spot on the back of the heel, resulting in horrid blisters for a very long time (until the shoe is VERY well broken in). I’ve found that my best bet is to add heel lifts to my shoes. They are unfortunately very hard to find (at least for me) but I’ve got a pair of cork lifts that give me just about a 1/4 inch in the heel. It raises my heel just enough to avoid the blister from hell while not impacting my balance or the comfort in the shoe. The pair I have were from a podiatrist. I also have a pair of Dr. Scholls gel heel do-hickey things that work similarly that I use in some shoes.
t
I put Foot Petals heel cushions in every new pair of heels ( http://www.footpetals.com/Heavenly%20Heelz.html ). I swear by them! Also, Avon used to have an anti-blister balm that worked really well, although I’m not sure if they still sell it.
If I do still end up with a blister (usually because I forgot to add the cushions), I have a pair of back-less slip-on shoes that I wear until the blister is healed. They’re like a cross between a mule and a high-heeled-loafer. Not my favorite pair of shoes, but better than aggravating the blister even further.

I had Nine West pumps almost exactly like these (in both black patent and ivory) in 1985. Back then, I would have worn the ivory pumps with ivory hose for the full 1980s effect!
In fact, I still have the shoes, but I went from a size 5 1/2 shoe to a size 6 or 6 1/2 shoe in law school some years ago . . . wonder if my shoemaker can stretch them!
L
Pretty! Do others with big feet find it hard to wear pointy shoes? I try them on, but every pair I try (my feet are a 9 or 9.5) make me look like the wicked witch of the west.
Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
I have the same problem (I wear a 10-11 depending on the shoe), but it’s usually not as bad with a higher heel (read: sit and look pretty shoes).
eplawyer
It’s not your shoe size. I only wear a 6/6.5. I still feel like my feet look like boats when I wear pointy shoes. Go with a friend you trust. If she says they look fine on you, then they do.
C. Z.
I wear a 10, and it really depends on how elongated the point is. I have the Cole Haan Fiona nike air heels (amazing!!) and even though I sized up to an 11, the point is totally proportional. It’s when the shoe makers go way too far beyond the toes that the points look witchlike, rather than elongating.
L
Maybe my whole problem is with the elongating – I don’t want my feet to look any bigger than they are!

Am I alone in finding these shoes revolting?
bellafortuna
I agree with you.
Louise
I don’t hate them. I have more of a “meh” reaction. But then again, I really can’t wear heels at all, so I’ve trained myself not to want them.
However, I really love the variety of shoes and clothes presented on this blog. It is fascinating to me to listen to the conversations about what works and what doesn’t. Variety is the spice of life.
v
I’m nor sure I could be revolted by a pair of shoes that wasn’t made out of like, rotting animal carcasses.
anonymous
i don’t like either.
Karen
I don’t like patent leather or snakeskin. That said, this is about as attractive as a shoe could be with two materials I don’t like. I’d love this shoe if it were just plain old leather with the cutouts.
I’d only admire it on others, though – no pointy heels for me and my bad feed.
Lawgirl
Ugh, 2 1/2 inch Jimmy Choo pumps are SOOOOoo unflattering on everyone (sorry, Michelle Obama).
RF
I have a hard time understanding how people can splurge on shoes. I must be too hard on my shoes but I just don’t understand how I could do it when I know I am going to scuff the toe and damage the heel at some point. Am I just hard on shoes or do people really wear shoes and not damage them, LOL?
SPS
I wonder the same thing! Though I must admit that when I do “splurge” on a pair, I often treat them a bit better than I would otherwise. I think it’s not really a problem for most people, outside of major cities — if you drive to work, your chances of having your shoe stuck in a subway grate diminish significantly!
I’ve found that leaving heels under my desk, most of the time, lets them stay looking new almost forever. Otherwise, between a long walk to the subway & back, and running around during lunch, I am hard pressed to keep a heel from getting scuffed (this is especially frustrating with leather covered heels as the damage is glaring and almost impossible to really fix once done.)
I am much more likely to spend more on wedge heels for this exact reason! Anyone else have tips to let your shoes survive a big city environment?
zee
wow, i thought this was just me – i always put holes in leather-wrapped heels! (sidewalk crack, etc). i was beginning to wonder if i missed out on some “keeping shoes looking ok” gene. drives me nuts. if it happens on black, i just sharpie the exposed plastic, but i’d really rather not damage my shoes so quickly (and obviously it’s not a real fix).
divaliscious11
Its the shoe and the quality. Not crazy about this particular shoe, but I have a Jimmy Choo with a similar heel – put them on at 7:30 this am and wore all day through 3 airports – comfortably…..
jojo
Some shoes pare worth the splurge. A well-made and excellent-fitting shoe, when properly cared for, can last for many years. I decided years ago that I cared too much about my feet to wear cheap, might-as-well-be-disposable shoes.

On the flip side of cost – All Nine West Shoes are $14.95 @ 6pm.com today.

awesome tip, thanks! I just ordered two pairs and am hoping they fit–this is my first online shoe buying experience because i’m always so worried they’ll never fit, but for that price, I had to try.
georgienyc
what about the patent leather? these loub options at the bottom of the page are equally pricey but a little less shiny…..

Loubs are always lovely, but the simple 100s are so high! I have a pair of simple 70s that I love, perfect work height (patent leather :)

I almost bought a pair of Jimmy Choos once, but holy cow where they uncomfortable. For that kind of money, I want to feel like I’m walking on pillows.
georgienyc
agree. i’ve never tried on a pair that i was actually comfortable in. Unless they’re with a very low heel.
michelle
I actually really like these shoes and think they would work great with a power suit, but between my genetic inability to walk in heels and my enormous feet that look awful in pointy toes, they are not for me. but I REALLY like them. Sigh.
Yasmin
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE. Thanks Corporette!! I would buy these in a heartbeat.
But then, I am a shoe person – sounds like others here may not be! To each their own – but for me, if there is 1 thing that I will splurge on, it is shoes. For one thing, my expensive shoes ARE more comfortable than the knock-offs (i.e. Nine West), they are made better and last longer. Granted, I don’t wear them every day – I switch it up with cheaper shoes. Still – I have a pair of navy blue Manolos that have outlasted 5 pairs of Nine West shoes. When I have a big meeting, or a big night out, it is splurge shoes all the way. Nothing makes me feel more confident. I think it is like handbags for some people – I don’t bother with super expensive bags – I don’t want to announce to the world that I am wearing Loubs or Manolos but those who know their stuff will appreciate them. And I have tracked down great shoes at second-hand or consignment shops, I don’t need this season’s latest offerings.
Granted, I don’t live in NYC and I don’t have to take public transportation – when I am in that situation I would switch out walking shoes for getting places. Maybe some cute Ferragamo flats?
Yasmin
PS – I wear a 9 or 9 1/2 and am fine with pointy shoes, I think maybe it is just a matter of getting used to them. I am also on the tall side (5 ft 7) and have no problem with my 5 inch wedge sandals that put me up to 6 feet – even over here in Asia where that puts me at about 10 inches taller than most women. Again, a question of getting used to it, I guess.
A
I think they’re cute, but I have never been able to walk in heels.
For those who can walk in heels, perhaps you could share some tips?
Yasmin
A – practice! Get some that are really high and wear them around the house until you get used to it.
jojo
I can’t believe no one mentioned this yet, but baby powder is great for the sock-averse and blister-prone among us. Sprinkle some into your empty shoe and tap it around to get a fine layer of coverage. It also quiets squeaks.
georgienyc
Unfortunately, don’t think you can ever really buy cheap shoes. They are always to blame for uncomfortable work days. Found a pair of Tahari heels that I adore – plus they are great price point and on sale, here.

Oh, those are GREAT shoes, Corporette. I want! Well done.
I also have to say – remember that Nanette LePore mustard-colored jacket of some time ago, with the asymmetrical ruffle? I saw it in person in a boutique this past weekend, and I completely revised my assessment of it. The picture didn’t do it justice, at all. Much cuter in real life.
