For busy working women, the suit is often the easiest outfit to throw on in the morning. In general, this feature is not about interview suits for women, which should be as classic and basic as you get — instead, this feature is about the slightly different suit that is fashionable, yet professional.
What an unusual suit — and I really like it! This suit comes in both pale pink and pale blue, and features a long tie waist that wraps around the bodice a bit like an obi tie would, but a bit differently, also, in that it's meant to be wrapped around the bust as well. It looks a bit confusing on the site, but the Instagram feed at the bottom showcases real people wearing it and they all look great.
(I'd suggest wearing pants with it as it looks a bit short for a coatdress, but what do I know?!)
I also like that the blazer is machine washable.
The blazer is $150 and available in sizes 14-28, and the pants are $80; I believe there's a 40% off code that works on both today.
There is no great substitute for this in straight sizes, but this blue chambray dress and blazer from Banana Republic Factory has an interesting wrap effect on the dress and is a similar color. (We found it in our recently updated Hunt for suits with dresses instead of skirts!)

Me too – I think it’s super chic

Or old-man pajamas.
Coach Laura
I think this model needs better posture and a good br@ and that the outfit doesn’t necessarily flatter her, none of which is related to the plus size of the outfit. The model in pink wears it better. But I would never wear this in blue or pink. Black or a deep blue or even a brown would be better.
Ellen
This MUST be for others who do not have leches like Frank, as I could not wear this b/c Frank would be pulling on my belt in the hope he could dislodge it. The model does look like she is slouching, but then again, it could just be that she does NOT want to flaunt her boobies, as I too have this issue when I stand straight up in court, but I then have a support bra to keep things where they belong.

The unwrappable-ness and how it seems robe-adjacent make me feel that it is what a soap opera office vixen wears before seducing someone on the boardroom table. Can you not see Alexis Morrel Carrington Colby Dexter wearing it?
gouda
I think it’s the color – pale pink and blue really read PJs to me. I would probably love this in navy.

Agree. This in black with a great animal print shoe is very chic. In blue it totally looks like scrubs.

Yes, I would totally wear it in black. #karateuniformisafeaturenotabug

Has anyone purchased the Everlane Day Glove shoes and if so, what do you think of them? Are they too casual for a business casual work environment?
Anon
Yes– they were not for me. The leather is very thin, and my big toe turns up and was very visible. I had this same issue with Tieks. I think they are about the same formality as Tieks, but more practical– they don’t have the neon sole, etc. that screams “Tieks.”
Anonymous
Yes and it was so tight and deeply uncomfortable I immediately returned it.
no show socks
Anybody have any no show socks they like? The kind that are cut really low on the foot (they look kind of like sock ballet flats). Are bombas worth the hype?
Cat
Not sure if they’re no-show enough for you as they do come to mid-foot, but I like the Zella no show’s with sneakers.
Editrix
I wear a 10 shoe and Zella socks are way, way too small. For my feet, Bombas are great! I like the heavier weight no-show socks because they last a long time but the lightweight ones are nice too.
Anon
+1. I even bought the large Zella socks and they are teeny tiny.

I’ve been fine with my cheapies from Target. Get the ones with the gel-like grip on the heel to prevent slippage.

If you want super low cut, the Hue ones are pretty good but don’t feel as substantial as a sock. My favorite sock-like ones are actually from Muji if you have one of those stores near you.

thank you! Looks like I’ll be ordering a bunch to try – I love my other smartwool socks, so they in particular sound promising!

Late to this but YES, Bombas tiniest no shows are literally the only sock that is actually no show on every pair of shoes I have. Absolutely worth it. (The smallest Smartwools show in all my flats, and I stan for Smartwool in every other occasion, which is why I tried them first.)

I wanted to love the Bombas but they do not stay on my feet
Zoo question
So per the conversation yesterday, Houston has now cancelled the rodeo, which is a shame but seems smart (sad to miss Lizzo but also a lot of kids work hard all year for this, lots of jobs affected, its a giant scholarship program).
Now my question is, how soon do we think zoos will close? I promised my son I’d take him to see the dragons exhibit here and now I’m worried it will close before we get there. I feel like community transmission risk is much lower at the zoo than, say, the children’s museum.
Anon
fellow Houstonian here. I do not know. with next week being spring break for many schools, i would think that the zoo will be a total mob. i also think that since generally (and not just in Houston) the communication around how this virus spreads has been terrible, that most people will be out and about with their kids and are not necessarily canceling travel plans. people do not seem to get that there are likely many many people walking around with the virus, but we just don’t know yet that they have it
anon
Another Houstonian who is so, so sad about the rodeo (even though I had no plans to go).
anon
In our infested area, our smallish zoo is capping attendance at 900 people. Go early?
Wendy
Honestly, I wouldn’t go to the zoo. How old is your son? Would watching a cool dragon themed movie at home or buying home a dragon themed toy be a viable substitute? Or, just explaining to him that because lots of people are getting sick, we can’t go to the zoo this week, and letting weathering a disappointment be a life lesson? I dono. I say this as I plan to go ahead w/ my daughter’s birthday party so don’t exactly have the moral high ground…
OP
Fair! He’s 3 so old enough to care and young enough to not get the rationale! We just had the first reported case of community transmission in an area outside of Houston today, so my thought was to go before it reaches us where we are. I may actually run home and take him today!
anon
I would assume it has already reached where you are, but cases just haven’t been confirmed yet.
Anon
This. I don’t think you can outrun a virus.
Dealtwiththis
As of now, the Zoo is staying open. Also, dragons is here through September 7th so you have some time!

Can anyone in higher ed explain this.
I attended a college years ago and got married in the meantime. Just took a job with said college, provided all the paperwork, and yet my email, benefits, hr, all is in my maiden name. They went ahead with all of it although they had my name.
Anon
Is it the same email address you had in undergrad? Some systems will save that info indefinitely so if they reactivate your old email address, all the old info will be linked to it. They should be willing and able to change it when you point it out though.
Anon
same thing happened to me when i began working at my alma mater.
Anon
The key is either your employee ID or a unique user ID (my university keys off both, which can be maddening when things break), not your SSN. When you give you social security card to HR, it crosswalks to one of these other fields, which will return all your old information. Additionally, my uni separate profiles (but occasionally share random tables) for students and faculty/staff.
Don’t poke under the hood of a large university’s database. It’s practically guaranteed to be a hot mess, but that’s an over-simplified version of how it may tie together.
givemyregards
I’ve worked at a few universities who have done it that way, too – usually you can pick what the e-mail address reads (jane.doe@university.edu – at places I’ve worked, I’ve been able to set this up and change it myself through a self-service system, otherwise IT would I’m sure change it), but not what the back end username is (jmaiden47 or whatever). In our systems, you would use jmaiden47 to login and other people could technically e-mail you at jmaid47@email.university.edu but otherwise only you would see it.
Anon
Yep, depending on how your uni has things set up, your student email may become your primary and any staff addresses are really just aliases.
At my uni, they set up two separate emails if you ever had a staff email. It’s then on you to link them up, along with any separate departmental emails, that are also not aliases. Yes, that’s as troubling as it sounds.
Dreams are weird
Random story about a weird dream I had and the factors that I think made it happen. Reminded me of some of the recent comments /questions around missing an ex or people popping up from years ago.
The dream: I’m out in the world and I run into my ex-boyfriend from middle school, his sister, and his parents. Our “oh hey, wow, so surprised to see you” hug lasts a little longer than it should. I tell ex that we should get a drink and catch up, and he should come to my office after work to meet up. I end up completely forgetting about it and take the early train home. I don’t see his texts asking where I am until the next morning, where I reply that I’m SO SORRY, with no mention of rescheduling. I sort of wake up and feel bad about this, until I realize that even my dream self just does not care about this relationship from 20 years ago at all.
The factors: My husband is in a bit of a rough patch and things are stressful between us. We’re not on the same page, we’re getting in stupid little fights, etc. I’m friends with ex’s sister on Facebook, and happened to see a picture of her kid while scrolling through my feed right before bed. I watched the most recent Grey’s Anatomy episode, focused on all sorts of memories and reconnections from the past. My husband snuggles up next to me in the middle of the night and I fit exactly where I belong, even subconsciously.
Dreams are real weird. REAL WEIRD.
Ellen
I think you are longing for simpler times that happened along time ago with your ex boyfriend. Don’t even think twice about it b/c he is now probably bald and fat, so your husband probably looks better then he does at this point. Continue to snuggle with hubby and you will forget all about your ex.
Cool story
Neat.
CountC
Dreams are weird! I had a weird dream involving an ex boyfriend from over 15 years ago last week. We were at a very weird wedding (won’t go into details) and were being very intimate throughout. I am not on FB nor am I connected with him in any way other than LinkedIn where we never interact and he never ever shows up in my stories. So effing bizarre!
Dreams are weird
Right!?! Where do our brains come up with this madness?
Maudie Atkinson
I need some shopping help, y’all.
I’m looking for a high heel shoe to wear with a formal dress that is (a) actually comfortable and walkable, something I could wear all night without thinking twice; (b) true red–poppy red, not burgundy or maroon or the like. It doesn’t have to be super high, but I don’t want a kitten heel. I could do a sandal or a fancy pump.
My feet aren’t exceptional or fussy–not too wide or narrow, average arch. I’m very comfortable wearing and walking in heels generally. And to be clear, it’s not that there are a shortage of shoes that have the look I like; it’s that I’m uncertain whether they would be truly comfortable. For example, I love the look of the Tamara Mellon Frontline 75, but I don’t want to spend $400+ on something that I cannot actually wear all night.
Can anyone recommend a truly comfortable shoe that comes in the color I’m looking for?
Anonymous
Stuart Weitzman Nudist, on the S.W. website.
Annony
They’re kind of boring but the Nine West Margie pump is a really bright red and very comfortable. I wear them to work and am fine walking to lunch, standing, going between floors, etc. They also have a block heel version (the Cara) that looks like a similar color but block heels are usually even easier for walking around. They’re suede, but it’s a very subtle suede.
Mallory
I usually have good luck with Sam Edelman’s lower heels, maybe these?:

Anon Employee
Bringing this over to this current thread so it gets more exposure. Those who have spent a lot of time scolding everyone for not working from home, please consider this perspective from “Anon in HR” at the end of the morning thread. Many of us would like to be allowed to work from home to help stop community spreading of COVID-19, but we are not allowed to do so by our employers. I hope she’ll update her attitude and policies soon. She writes:
“I would not insist on working from home. There’s OSHA guidance on this. I work in HR for a large Fortune 100 company and employees who are overreacting and insisting that they be allowed to work from home are being told that unless they have a reasonable concern (someone in their work group has COVID 19 or are under quarantine) they’re required to be at work. Based on OSHA’s guidance, the employee’s concern must be “reasonable” and then the employer should demonstrate the steps they’re taking to alleviate the employee’s “reasonable” concern. You don’t want to be labeled and while employers can’t retaliate, it’ll be hard for them to forget that you were unreasonable.”
Anonymous
I don’t think anyone was scolded, and I don’t think Anon from HR is up to date with that viewpoint in terms of CDC or legal recommendations. Definitely don’t be the person who visibly panics, but requesting reasonable accommodations should not be frowned upon. Frankly, it should be the norm to allow work from home where possible and it will help companies avoid suffering from a lack of workers due to everyone being out sick later and help them avoid discrimination against those who have health problems and are high risk.
Anonymous
What so you get to work from home for 9 months?
Anonymous
People need to start WFH now in order to flatten the curve. Community transmission is occurring – the risk is that everyone gets sick close to the same time like in Italy and hospitals get overwhelmed. We need to create a flu season curve where there’s not a shape sudden spike – WFH helps do that. heck even having half the office WFH and switching up who was in the office and who was home every two weeks would help.
LaurenB
Someone’s jealous!
Ellen
YOU are smart either way. For some, working from home means doing laundry, cooking, watching TV and generally doing as little as you can get away with. For others, like me, it means writing breifs, billeing cleints, preparing litigation memos, scheduling status conferences, and manageing my work productively. I do this daily from 6-10pm when I can, and on days that I do stay home, I do it from 9:30-5. If you get into the mode of knowing you are responsible for billing, you can do work from anywhere. When I walk home, and think about a case, I come home and bill the client for 1 hour. When I watch TV, I have my computer open so that I can multitask, so I can do work and then handle value billing simultaneously. It’s all in your attitude, and your need for billeable hours. It works for me! YAY!!!
Anonymous
What I don’t get is that many of us will be working on a .25 FTE once schools close (2 kids + WFH spouse on video calls all day + my quiet desk work) in 900 sq ft apartment and needing to feed people 3x/day = not a lot of work will get done and that is if everyone is well and no one is having to get taken to the doctor or be in a hospital. I will essentially be able to do the bare minimum (ditto people who have kids in day care and even people with SAH spouses will be stuck at home inside with everyone when schools close down).
“Work” won’t be business as usual.
My scanner doesn’t talk to my work computer and we don’t have e-sign, so I will need to roll in on occasion to wet-sign some documents and scan them in.
Anonymous
Sign and photograph and email yourself the photo.
Anonymous
Ugh. I hate when clients do this. Buy a $50 scanner that talks to your work computer. Or email things from whatever computer the scanner you have does talk to. (Or go in. I’m not panicking yet.)
Anon
There’s also a free app called “Tiny Scanner” that allows you to scan things from your phone. And they look like a scan, not a photograph
Wendy
Scannable is another free app that does this and is really easy to use.
all about eevee
I would love to hear more about her labeling system!
anonshmanon
OP, what were you thinking to achieve by reposting this? Instead of just reposting this opinion on what the OSHA guidance is, you could have included the link to the new guidance that OSHA just issued on this specific pandemic, which encourages social distancing including telecommuting, and does NOT require reasonable concerns.
https://www.osha.gov/Publications/OSHA3990.pdf
Anonymous
The CDC has guidance, the state has guidance and my county has guidance. The generic HR advise not to rock the boat should be tempered by the fact you can now go to your employer and point to steps they need to take. My County told everyone over 50 to stay home as much as possible and I used that rather than my specific medical issues to explain my request.
Anon
Once employers get us all working from home and realize they don’t have to pay for monitors, rent, heat, AC and toilet paper, you think they’ll be dumb enough to let everyone back? This is a perfect trial of cost-cutting measures many companies have been experimenting with.
Anonymous
My employer has already vocalized that. As someone who hates working from home, it makes me nervous.
Monday
I’ve actually been wondering about that. It’s a huge experiment that nobody asked for, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it changes standard procedures in the long run as employers fine-tune the tradeoff in productivity and face time vs. overhead spent on office space.
Anon
I have thought about that too. This is going to be a really interesting experiment for American workforces, in many ways. Not just WFH but the paltry amounts of sick leave employees get, the weakness of our current health insurance systems, what “social distancing” will mean in practice, etc.
I would rather WFH full-time so I hope my employer embraces it wholeheartedly.
Anonymous
Same with cost-cutting on business travel. We’re all grounded and we’re waiting for our employer to realize how much cheaper it is for us not to visit clients. Unfortunately it’s terrible for long-term client relationships :(
Anon
Yup.
anonshmanon
fine by me.
anon
On the flip side I think a sizable chunk of the population is not really productive at home and employers who are anti-WFH will use the dismal performance during this period as justification to not support WTF programs.
Anon
Folks that eat relatively healthy, what are you buying to stock up for quarantine meals? I’m gluten and dairy free and eat a lot of fresh meats and veggies. I’m thinking of getting Amy’s frozen meals, Daiya mac and cheese, frozen chicken strips, frozen veggies. Maybe frozen fish. What are you all getting?
Anon
Tofu freezes well, as does hummus.
anonanon
Frozen fruits and veggies. Vegan protein powder and almond milk for shakes. I’m buying fresh meat and wrapping them in small portions to freeze. Frozen fish pieces. Rice, pasta, beans, and broth to be able to make soups. Canned tuna and chicken just in case.
Anon
That’s really tricky, and I have been thinking about it. Meat freezes just fine, raw or cooked. Potatoes and sweet potatoes should last for a couple of weeks. Cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower (especially whole) will keep longer than leafy greens in the fridge. Salsa & hummus keep for weeks, canned tomatoes and garbanzo beans keep for even longer. I also grabbed some extra LARA bars, which are my usual breakfast-snack anyway, and I believe meet your criteria. Will be following for more ideas!
anon
about the same as you honestly.
I am keeping shelf stable oat milk in the pantry, as well as canned beans, a few extra bottles of favorite curries or thai sauces, peanut butter, dried fruit, chocolate, and of course mac and cheese. These are things i eat anyway, so having an extra on hand is nice.
Anon.
I am freezing cut vegetables, fruits and herbs. Scrambled egg freezes ok, too. You could also prepare quiches or other things that freeze well. And most fresh meats can be frozen as is (chicken thighs, breasts, lamb chops etc).
Will the food be as tasty made from frozen ingredients? Maybe not. Will it be ok during a time of potential lock-down/reduced store runs? Most definitely yes.
Anonymous
I stocked up on soup, chili, canned beans, frozen fruit and veggies, breakfast grains, dried fruit, and not from concentrate canned juices. And shelf stable milk replacement.
Anonymous
Beans, rice, onions, garlic, potatoes, bacon, spices.
